As a former runner I know this is hard. About 6 years ago in my mid 40s where I was running a 5K three times a week I had a goal to do a single 6 minute mile. Tried it a few dozen times but fell short with the best at 6 min and 28 seconds. I have since switched to inline skating as it's quite a bit easier on my aging knees. In that sport a marathon is doable for me in under 3 hours.

Barring the pros almost everyone is happy to talk for at least the first half of the marathon. Which feels like the first 20 miles.
Honestly the first 1/2 to 3/4 feels just like just another weekly long run, like you've been doing for months, except you're super hyped, well rested, and fed for it! You usually get about 20 miles of that "oh, we're killing this workout!" feeling before your body realizes what's happening and hates you.

    • @Esteapen

This actually helps a lot, diverting the pain and exhaustion. Not a pro but I noticed when I run alone, 5km is already exhausting, but when I'm with someone I don't even realize I already ran 20+km
