Andrew shows you many hints and tips that he has gained from his experience as a professional goldsmith.
Andrew Berry, a professional jeweller for 30 years, is the training director of www.AtTheBench.com, an award winning on line jewellery training website.
I love the way you simplify all your teachings , thorough ly explaining the whys and wherefores. Your hints and tips can make sensew to anyone any age. I have relocated to another town in Oregon-from Medford to Ashland and am going back over to the very first and most basic lessons-I will be setting up my workspace in he coming weeks and I must tell you I am extremely grateful for your UA-cam videos-you are a fine professional jeweler and an excellent instructor. Thank you, Andrew Berry. I am going to take your advice and PRACTICE on some affordable brass and copper sheet metal to hone my piercing skills-a neighbor down the hall also loves jewelry making -but he wants to buy pre-fabricated components and only have to solder them together, which is fine and saves time, however, I prefer to practice with my jeweler's saw and manufacture my own components and in the long run will become a more skillful jeweler than if I buy ready made components. I have seen your other videos where you demonstrate basket settings and prongs, seasoning a crucible, etc etc and I will watch them again and again as I restart my jewelry making. I am transitioning from simple beadwork and spoon rings to real custom made items and with careful attention and PATIENCE it should be a great journey! Thanks again!
Thank you so much for posting this video!! It has helped me so much! I got a stool that was lower, flipped my bench pin so it would be flat instead of sloped, kept my saw blade at a 90 degree angle, and BAM! I actually sawed something beautiful!!! Please keep the tutorials coming!!
Andrew , no exaggeration, every single time I watch you , I learned something. Thanks 👍
This is the best learning channel :-) Love your way of making it completely understandable why/why not to do things a certain way. It does inspire to make something myself with enough confidence to believe even a first attempt on a simple piece might come out acceptable to amatures.
What a wonderful instruction on scroll type cutting for a beginner like my self. I've got every single piece of equipment I need for smithing but I'm going through every video and some a few times before I even start. I've been cutting opal for years and tired of sending my stones out to be set. This is a natural progression
This is a long video but every tip he gives is golden! Seeing him encounter a problem--even a broken blade and the need to fit the new blade into the middle of the project--and solve it was great.
Best Teacher ever. Learning in an underdeveloped country, a lot of the techniques I know are outdated. But listening to you gives me a different perspective on the knowledge given to me by my mentor.
I struggled today with curves. Glad I found this video. Tomorrow I will flip my bench pin. Also I need to use my whole blade while cutting. Great job teaching! Thank you
... you said (in your previous video) to never throw away the snapped blades: what are they still good for, I wonder?
Thank you for all the things I learn from you, such a great teacher you are, Sir
I just love your videos and always recommend them to anyone who really wants to learn jewelry making.
Andrew, I am so grateful for your entertaining and informative videos. You are so straightforward and easy to listen to-no silly stuff! Just the right stuff.❤❤❤❤❤
You are simply an amazing teacher. Thank you!
Thank you Andrew for your detailed teaching, I learned a lot from you … tips that were not learned from our jewelry classes 😀
You never fail to make me laugh while teaching me so much I throughly enjoy your channel/tutorials. :D Thank you for all your time, effort and expertise.
Thank you, Andrew! I can't wait for tomorrow to try out all your tips. I've shied away from curves because it seemed so hard. I really liked that your blade broke once. It's great seeing a teacher run into a problem and then show how to correct and explain why it happened. When the instructor does everything perfectly, I am discouraged because I know it will not go that smoothly for me. Now i know blades break even when a expert is sawing. I will curse less the next time i break a blade. Your calm demeanor has taught me to stress less
Great tutorial on something so obvious like sawing, many thanks
I absolutely LOVE your videos and learn so much..! Thanks for being the best jewelry teacher on UA-cam.. 👍💞
Yep,u have the best videos on UA-cam,you have taught me all that I know about soldering, just a beginner.. thanks
WOW ! Impressed with that cut. Plan do do that practice. Have to stand though, work at a lab, not my place.
You are a great teacher!
I'm not sure how you get thumbs down on these videos the great advice from obviously a very experienced metal Smith and bio leaven people who did that obviously have no clue why you do the things the way you do
Great tips sir, thank you Andrew
Thankyou so much for all your teaching. This one was something I had never been told before in jewellery classes so it was very useful.
Great video, Andrew. Thanks for all the tips! Love your videos.
Thanks Andrew, makes a difference.
Andrew thanks you for making another clear and informative video. Keep up the good work 👍🏿
Thanks for sharing this with us. Outstanding.
You are so clear and concise. Thank you so much for your time and knowledge. Also it's great to see some tips in the comments. I love to learn but I am a visual learner and my left brain is super slow..
best teacher!
Thank you so much for this. It has helped me so much!
So helpful, thank you!
very nice!!....thank you for sharing these tips.
Instead of "waxing" the top of the piece you are cutting, since the shavings will stick to it, wax the underside of the metal. You'll still lubricate and be able to see your lines.
Good tip but I feel that the shavings/lemel would get stuck to the underside and scratch the metal
Thank you Andrew
Hi Andrew. Thank you very much for this video it's helpful with the good tips and I learned how to use the piercing saw.
Great tips, thanks Andrew. You mention keeping broken blades. Do you have a tip for using them ?
Thanks for the tips.
please can you do a video on creating bezels for a cabochon with an open back..
@andrewberry I know this is 5yrs ago, but man these are great videos. So helpful. You make it look easy, but also show how to work through issues.
Perfect thank you
Can you please do a video of all the tools you need to start making jewelry at least for piercings?
Btw love your videos
Brilliant just what I needed. Thank you
Cool thanks for the useful tips! :) The burn.
Totally loving your vids - thanks for sharing
Great tutorial 😊thank you
Andrew this was invaluable thank you so so much 🤗
Thank you for this Tutorial super
thank you andrew a master class .
I really, really enjoy your teachings. I wish you would position your camera showing from above of the work so that we can "see" everything you are doing and not just listen to your explanation and then see the final project. Thanks soo much.
WOW! That was impressive!
What do you think of spiral blades? Thank you Andrew.
Andrew, when you say the "teeth will cut in a downward stroke ..'in theory'," does that mean it doesn't always? I find it drags a neutral (doing nothing) on the way up and cuts on the way down- always. When you say, "in theory", does that mean it is not consistent? Or is that an expression? Thans so much for all your amazingly generous and spot on videos!
You’re my hero.
great video very informative, How many years of practice to be that quick and that accurate?
Thank you
Thank you sir.
I understand the need to cut on the waste side but do you have a video explaining exactly how you file down the metal to the sketch line? What I'm interested in is what brand and type of file you use for fine work? My files get clogged continually when filing soft metal- brass, silver etc. so perhaps I'm using the wrong type of file. Any help you may offer will be appreciated.
Very usefull video again...thank you very much. Every time I see you sawing..I wonder how can you saw so quickly.... ? what kind of sawblades you have in the saw. I have the same concept saw but it takes always a long time to saw something...I live in France abd buy often my stuf in Holland. Thank you for your answer..
So if you add another sheet of metal to make two shapes of the same size, would you use the same size saw or would you change it for the doubled metal thickness?
Love you andrew you are a great personality. Nice
Wao beutyfull thank u for this video.
Andrew, I read on one of those jewelry blogs that annealing your metal would make it easier to saw. Does annealing the metal make it any easier for a beginning to learn how to saw or is there no reason to do this? Thanks for all your great videos.
Hi, I would have thought it would make no difference as annealing only affects how the metal bends and moves and has nothing to do with sawing. First thing I have heard about it.
My Tutor also said the metal is easier to pierce when annealed
Annealed metal is easier to saw, try it and you will see for yourself.
Hello! Very interesting video! Can you please tell me if there is any e shop where I can find the aluminium blade that you said it is your favorite?
Thank you in advance!
I use 3/0 blades but If I use the glueing metal together method for say making earrings do I need a different blade as I would be making my metal temporarily twice as thick
Andrew Berry,
Wouldn't an electric jig saw with a fine blade be good for curved or odd lines?
Great lots of tips for my memory bank. Cheers. Can I ask why do u turn your bench hook back around at an angle, after u finished cutting flat pieces Andrew? Sorry it's prob a basic answer but I'm just starting out trying To learn myself to work with some metals like copper and silver and also coins. I started making wood rings but I want to broaden my horizons so to speak. Love your channel, it's so helpful to me and many others.. Merry Christmas from Ireland, do I hint a Welsh accent there? Or somewhere close?
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge I have learned so many great tips. In you last video regarding sawing straight lines you mentioned if you saw blade breaks keep them never through them away. What can I do with the broken blade so I'm not being wasteful. Thanks again.
Christie Minalga I should have added that you keep them if you are using precious metals and add them to your sweeps bag. Check out one of my previous videos on Reclamation
Thank you, just watched that video very helpful.
Thanks Again
Thanks Andrew :-)
Did you roll you pattern? It looks much easier than paper and tape or glue. Love your piercing, btw, & your videos!
I think he scribed it.
when you 'drew' the shape on the sheet metal I suspect you used a scribe not a pen is that right?
Yes, I used a scribe as the line is a lot finer but don't mark the meal too deep.
oops just read description !!! -around 30years then!
What kind of pen did
you use on the metal?
I think that was a scribe.
Where did you buy your piercing saw?
I bought it many years ago but you can follow the links below and buy the same one
even the best can screw up sometimes and you blamed yourself not the tools, very nice to see great stuff, like the videos very informative very helpful, how is the engraving going ?
albert partridge Thanks Albert. Engraving? Very slowly at the moment. Not getting much practice in at all.
Mad people are the most creative
What if I don't have a peg...🤷🏻♂️
I love all of tips - it is obvious you know your stuff - but maybe less chatter HAHAHA j/k
Hey! Where'd you get that saw frame? Damn! Regarding your seat, buy a cheap wooden stool and adjust the legs with a saw. Haha. Hahaha. Adjust the legs with a saw. Haha. Ha. Not funny, eh? No. Sorry.
Wow! You only broke one blade! Intentional? 😜
That would have taken me 2 hours to cut 🤣
