- On one of At The Bench's last videos someone asked how to make ear rings posts.
In this video Andrew shows you several techniques for successfully making your own ear ring posts and how to solder them onto the ear ring.
Andrew shows you many hints and tips that he has gained from his 30 years experience as a professional goldsmith.
Andrew Berry, a professional jeweller for 30 years, is the training director of www.AtTheBench.com, an award winning on line jewellery training website.
That's much easier than I thought! You're a great teacher and very generous to share your knowledge. ty!
Thanks, Andrew for this tutorial, it was brilliant. I've never learnt this from my late uncle, who was a jeweler for many years, but you.
The saying is " tutorials are better than watching a movie."
Ps. I'm 68 yrs old.
Excellent.
Thank you for sharing this, brilliant way how to make an earring post❤
Thank you! Best way of soldering an earring post that I've seen so far!
Andrew, your videos have been indispensable to my self-driven learning process. This video is AMAZING!!! Thank you SO much for your time and service to the craft and others like me.
Yes yes YESSSSSSSSSSS no more nine to five . Andrew berry changed my family's life and our time together. PRICELESS 💕
I always wondered how people will get that grove at the back ear post. Thank you so much Berry.
Andrew, you know how to teach, thank you for explaining all steps!
This is absolutely the best video for making post earrings out there. Balling the end of the wire and using the round nose pliers to put the dent in the finished earring are just genius. Thank you, Sir, for upping my game.
Really helpful video. Thankyou. Is it possible to see a video of forging silver wire (to make say a Celtic style pendant) and shaping sharp points in wire leaf shapes.
Thanks Andrew.
You are truely a great teacher.
Great video as always Andrew, I have learned a lot from you sir. Thank you for teaching an old dog new tricks.
Thank you for your videos. They are awesome with your tips on the best way to do things. I would like to see one on how to hold a shoulder adornment on a solitaire diamond ring to solder it on.
Brilliant techniques, I use them every time bill I make earring posts. Thank you Andrew 😊
Thank you for sharing this video. I have been avoiding ear posts, but knew I couldn't forever. The last time I tried them did not go well. You have so many good tips and present the information in your videos so well. I always feel like you have given plenty of information so that I can try any of the techniques on my own. I see below that someone asked for a video on texturing with a hammer. That would be great. I have a lot to learn and your videos are so helpful.
Thank you so very much, I have so many earrings that have lost their posts. I'm just getting started and this is what I'm going to tackle first.
Thank you so much for being so generous with your big brain and your time! You are a great instructor.
Thank you very much for all the videos you post. I have learned so much from you!
Excellent video. You got me over my apprehension about soldering earring posts
Regarding my comment below, I WAS able to find sterling silver butterfly earring backs and they are not expensive. I suppose that's easier than making my own. Thanks again for all your amazing videos. I have so much to learn.
Thanks Andrew, I love learning how to do a post earring.
Thank you Andrew, another excellent tutorial 👍
I do appreciate your tips. I have used my side cutters to make the groove at the end. I think I am going to like the round pliers a lot more. :)
Thanks again Andrew, I learned a couple of great things. I do appreciate your videos
Great tips on hardening the post! Thank you do much! ❤
Thank you for making this look easy. I’m ready to try it now.
Hi Andrew thankyou for your videos. I’m just starting out but I’m a little confused as our tutor taught us to solder the post on in a different technique.
@Andrew Berry
I couldn't remember how to make the indentation near the end of the post so this was very helpful, thanks! 👍 Btw, what brand is your butane torch?
I saw this a few years ago and now that I'm making post earrings (as opposed to french wire dangles) I needed to refresh my memory. Thanks for leaving many of your tutorials open to the public. They're an invaluable tool that gave me confidence to make bench jewelry. Cheers! 😊
Just been texting the new micro torch from durston. Totally recommend it. See latest video
Thank you! Your videos are always spot on!
Brilliant as usual. Could you do a video on hammering techniques and effects please?
Cool you make soldering so easy
Brilliant little lesson, Thank you for sharing 👍👍
Thank you Mr Berry for sharing this video. I have learned a lot with you,. You are a very good Teacher 👍👍😊.
Thank you so much. That was a very simple detailed method of attaching and finishing an earring with post.
I really like your new thumbnails and how they are colour coded, very professional looking and organised. Keep up the good work ,👍🏼
Thanks SO much for sharing your expertise Andrew. I've learned so much already! I watched your delft clay /cuttlefish casting films and you mentioned that you might make a film demonstrating how to cast using a seashell. Is it possible to do this please? Thanks again. Steph
Great video, thank you. You answered all of the questions I had about this process and did it in a really succinct manner.
Excellent tutorial! You’ve covered everything I wanted/needed to know! I’ll follow this technique to the T! Thank you so much, Andrew!
So simple. Thank you for sharing.
Fabulously clear, to-the-point instruction. Thank you, Andrew :-)
Your videos are always excellent and loaded with extremely useful information. Thanks for making them.
Thank you so much learning much from your Tutorials.
I simply love your lessons. Greetings from Poland :-)
Amazing! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for your fantastic demos and tips
For years I've been missing my other star-shaped rainbow gem earring, I thought I would never see it again. I couldn't bear to get rid of this earring. But I just found the missing earring at the bottom of a box that's been in storage for 10 years! The post is broken off, so I found your video in hopes that I can fix it. 😁🤩❤
Very helpful. I wondered how to get a better joint.
Thank you so much for this, Andrew. Just wondering if this would be possible if, say, I was to repair the broken off back post of an earring with settings in it by attaching a new back post? What could I do to ensure the settings are protected while I solder a back post on?
Thanks for all the videos and just how informative you make them.
Brilliant instruction! Thank you again!
Thank you for your tips! Could you please do a video on making facet stud earrings
I also use the cup bur on the side of the post which connects to the earring. indent with a ball bur, and rounded post which fits exactly. much bigger surface area and very little solder needed.
Superb. I have been buying posts but now will make my own
Thank you so much for thar tutorial, great advice and tips. If I wanted to stamp the metal first to decorate what thickness of metal sheet would be best? Thank you so much 😊
This was absolutely awesome thank you!
Really informative - excellent lesson. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you fore your much work from Tutorial i love it ilearning so much. Thank you Andrew Berry
Thank you so much 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Wow amazing thank you so much this is exactly what I've been looking for a way to create earring backs simple and easy,As you are a great teacher!
Great tips. Thanks.
you are a godsend. thank you. i will make you proud
another great video. Question - Can you use paste solder here?
Best video on making Earring Post!! Could you tell me what gauge of wire you used?? I couldn't hear what you said. Was it 20 ga. 21ga. or 22ga.?????
Did you ever get an answer to this? I was wondering the same thing. What gauge?
@@LinseyGirl I looked it up, it was about 21 Guage.
I looked it up, it was about 21 Guage.
Thanks for the reply! 👍
Thanks again, Andrew, for another awesome video. Question: Do you make your own "butterfly" backs, or do you purchase them? (Are stainless steel butterfly backs the usual on silver earrings, because I couldn't find the silver ones in any online store in the USA, only stainless steel.) If you DO make your own, maybe you could make a video on how to do that.
You are so helpful. Thanks for the post
Very good tips Andrew. Thank you very much! ☺
Thank you! Perfect!
Thank you so much! Very helpful!
Brilliant. Thank you!
being watching your videos for a while, keep it up!
Greetings from New York.👌👌👌
Thank you. This is a great video, so helpful. If I’m just starting and can not afford sterling wire for practice, what kind of wire should I get?
Silver wire is very cheap and if you do mess up and melt it, then you can use it as embellishments on your jewellery
Thank you , thats just the information i was looking for 🤗.
Love your channel. Can you do a video in prong soldering with basic tool
thanks so much
Das ist wie immer ein tolles Tutorial danke
Fantastic thank you
Excellent teacher. I’m a beginner. Can you recap the solutions you dip in after soldering?
Thanks for your tips. Do you have any video on how to make solders?
Thanks master😊
is there a jeweler tool kit you would suggest? i got one with my student study but some things I did not...
Hi, great video!
I'd like to see how to scribe onto silver using tools.
What about the butterfly piece that goes on the post to keep it from falling out of your ear
Love your tips! Thanks :)
What company sells the white nylon brush. We dont have them in N.Z. Thank you for all your wonderful lessons.
Helped so much in Lockdown.
Ooooh cup bur trick!!! Thanks 🙏
What is the name of the domed Dremel bit? I’ve been searching and can’t find it online. Thanks very much
Muchas gracias por compartir
Thank you. Is it possible to back the scroll backs also?
Great! Thanks!
Thank you for another excellent tip. I notice you always solder with the small self contained torch. I have the Little Torch with oxy/propane. Would I be better off with the type of torch like you are using.
A small torch like his would mainly direct the heat to the area you are working with instead of the whole thing
Did you mention the starting gauge of wire you used?
Thank you so much.
What about if you have a chunkier earring? Would a 21 gauge still hold it in well?
What acid do you use after soldering
Thank you Andrew
Hi Andrew ! I don’t know what to do. I am trying to solder a back of earing onto some thin round wire. It did worked at some point but only one time i don’t know how. It is so hard. Do you have any tip for it ?
What do you call and where do you buy those glasses?
Great
Hi Andrew! Have a nice day! Can you show how to do "lock" for this type of earnings?
Love this video!
Thank you for the great tips!
