thank you for the kind, words. i almost gave up on nursing, i felt humiliated by teachers and preceptor even students, it was the worst nightmare of my life. although i finally graduated, i am always kind and understanding to students who come to me for help, i have been there and i know how it feels.

Thank you for this video :) I just started my first RN position on a surgical floor 3 weeks ago and have been feeling really incompetent lately. I feel like I do things too slowly and that I'm slowing my preceptor down. My preceptor is extremely patient with me and supportive, but at the end of every shift I drive home and just feel like crying. Everything is so overwhelming (the charting, the medications, assessments, infusion pumps, calling doctors, etc) and I'm worried that I'm gonna screw up really badly when I'm caring for patients on my own 😔 this video was very helpful in that it made me realize every new grad probably feels like this at the beginning. Thank you EmpoweRN :)

An instructor told me about your videos back in nursing school and your tips are so helpful. I'm a new nurse in the ICU and really struggling with confidence issues due to unkind coworkers. Thank you for what you do!

      Just a word of encouragement:
Remember that Jesus loves you and He's coming soon.
If you have not made a decision to follow Him, don't wait because tomorrow is
      promised to no one.
Satan wants us to believe we have all the time in the world, when we actually don't.
Even he knows his time is short (Revelation 12:12)
Lastly, the National Sunday Law is about to be enforced upon us. It involves the Mark of the Beast. The Beast is a religious & political system, which includes the Pope and his followers. Their sign of authority or seal is Sunday worship because they claim to have authority over the Bible and they admit that Sunday worship is their doing. (Revelation 13:6). They will enforce worship on all. (See Revelation 13). IT is their plan to force all to worship on the 1st day of the week (Sunday) and have that as the ONLY DAY of worship. They want everyone to forsake God's law which includes keeping the Sabbath, and accept man's tradition.
When it is enforced, and people accept Sunday worship INSTEAD of accepting the Seventh Day Sabbath (Saturday) as the Lord's Day and only true day of worship, they will get the mark of the Beast.
      The system promotes false worship.
So, it's our duty to keep God's commandments, including the 4th which talks about the Sabbath because in the end, we have to chose 1 side.
So, lastly, I'm inviting you to the Seventh Day Adventist church that is NEAREST to you and make it your #1 priority be ready by God's grace to face the time that is just before us.

Thank you so much for this video!!!! I was posted the same day of my first and worst clinical day!! I was made to feel so inadequate from my clinical instructor. Shooting nonstop questions of care. I felt like a deer in headlights!! Then I questioned everything I did that day. There is so much knowledge in my brain that I am not able to pull the information out as fast as I'd like. I believe that some instructor are quick to forget that we are still learning and that we have not mastered being a great nurse yet. It takes lots time and more nurturing than you can imagine. Your video is a blessing!! Thanks so much!

Thanks for another uplifting video. Even as a nurse with experience i just started a new job in cardiac, a field I have so much to learn about. It can make you feel inadequate starting something new. What helps me is looking up things I don't know and looking for resources that i can study up on. I know a preceptor won't teach me every thing I need to know, it's up to me to go out and learn as much as i can even if that means doing some "homework."

I just have to remember that you can't know everything and like you said to rephrase questions and know that I'm worth it and I have come so far when many have dropped out! Thank you again it is very much appreciated !

I think ive watched this before, but i had to watch again and i thank you. I have been having big time thoughts of quitting because i am really struggling in nursing school, my sim lab basically exists to let everyone sit around the table and all your peers criticize you , pointing out every last mistake you made during your scenario and its a joke. I really wanted school to be a positive experience, but i have only made it to med surg 1. In 8 months i could graduate if i could pull it together , but at my school you get very little teaching and lots of testing to see if you know it. I saw how to start an IV one time by my instructor then I had to do it yesterday in Simulation lab and guess what, i made a couple mistakes and was then raked over the coals. Thats just one of many many examples. Im so discouraged and need help so i appreciate your videos. Ive got to figure out how to be an awesome nurse by watching youtube cause I wont get it at school.

Thank you for addressing this! I brought up some of my concerns to a preceptor about feeling "inadequate." She essentially said the same thing, "You will graduate a novice. Nursing school is teaching you how to not to kill someone and making you a generalist in all areas. You will learn to be a real nurse in the real world." Nobody knows how grateful I am for the nurses that I can be transparent with and have sincere and encouraging conversations with.

Wow, it's crazy how life works. I started working at a hospital in the pediatric Emergency department 3 months ago and just finished my orientation with my preceptor. She was great and my orientation was during a slow season (summer) so I did not see as much as I am now that flu season is starting. Not just that but coming in as a new grad to a very fast paced workplace is challenging.. You mentioned the feeling of inadequacy, and is exactly how I've felt lately. I feel so incompetent sometimes.. It's tough. But thank you for this video I'm glad I saw it . It's like God said this is for you Hhahaha . No seriously thank you!!

Thank you so much for this video! Last month I took my NCLEX for the first time and failed. It has made me feel so unmotivated and inadequate.. All my nursing friends keep saying "oh you're so smart, you'll pass it the second time around", but those words aren't helping my feeling of inadequacy and not being good enough. Although this video is pertaining to feeling inadequate as a new nurse (which I will definitely feel whenever that happens), what you have said in this video is really helping me right now. Thank you so so much, your kindness and positivity is much appreciated!!

    Hi Caroline,
I am a new grad RN who had just recently started working at a SNF. What is your opinion about new grad RN starting out at this type of setting? I have no prior experience besides clinical experience and I am wondering if I can use this to put on my resume in hopes of landing a job at a hospital or any acute setting. I heard that some hospitals won't consider hiring RNs who worked in LTC/SNF/rehab, which kinda worries me...
    Thank you

In second year nursing and recently started on a icu ward overall i find it really interesting & the majority of the staff are lovely and very approachable, but today I had a nurse who just made me feel so inadequate at the beginning of the day she bombarded me with q's and when I was unable to answer one of them she kind of based that as an overall opinion of my nursing capabilities saying it's something I should know although i've had no previous experience i just felt I couldn't ask her anything from then on without hearing "basics you should have covered prior to here" and because of that the rest of the day I found I was unable to complete even simple tasks as I hated feeling so incompetent and dumb.I am interested in learning new skills & knowledge I really want to be a good nurse I thought my questions were reasonable to ask as I'm there to learn but after today I'm thinking I can't even do anything or know anything and it's shit :( Thanks for your video; I'm trying my best not to let it affect me although I have a hunch she may have spoken badly about me to my inspector (CPC). :(((((((

My kid is RN and is in her last semester of BSN with a extremely rude preceptor.
Today the preceptor at UCI (Irvine) made comment about 'How I passed nursing school'.
Talked to her professor but no support neither. She really hated here CSULB nursing right now .
I told her to say calm, don't take insults personally/ignore, and see if you can have a heart to heart meeting at lunch with her preceptor
to see how she can improve thing. I think it is too late or not possible to change a preceptor at this time.
She does write down and log everything on her preceptor and clinical.
Should she talk to a nurse manager? Nursing department dean? Or it will make it worst?
    Any advise?

Hello Carolyn. Great video. It sounds like there are a lot of toxic types (or just plain assholes) throughout the profession (much like anywhere else, I suppose). It's no wonder that nursing is high on the list for burnout, addiction, suicide, etc.
Is an agency position something we aspiring nurses should aim for immediately upon graduation?

    • @empowern

      Hey,
Honestly it's not that bad once you learn how to shrug things off :)
You have to have experience in your specialty prior to working as an agency nurse.
I love it, but it's not for everyone, I created a video about that to give you some more insight:

I hope it helps you make the decision that is right for you.

I'm in school for my BSN right now but years ago I started working at a hospital as a CNA and my preceptor was literally my worst nightmare. Dare I say, a bit of a bitch. The first day I walked in she was standing at the nurses station and said to a coworker "remember how the last girl only lasted two weeks" then she laughed. I knew it was going to be a lonnnnng haul lol I went home and cried that day. I really tried to get her to warm up to me, I asked about her kids, the vacation she went on & I always got one word answers. Long story short, about two months later I walked into work and was told I was being fired. I cried my eyes out. Two of the reasons why they fired me were complete lies from my preceptor (saying I went into a no contact room without gloves on a day I didn't even work). I was so upset but I learned many lessons. I wasn't the best nurse I could have been back then, I did make mistakes, and I should have just followed her around constantly even when she was rude. I defeated myself. Thank you for these videos. I wish all nurses had your compassion and willingness to teach. I know I'll be treating new grads with the respect and care I wish I would have gotten.
