For all of you like me who are wondering what PMDD is, here is what Johns Hopkins says: "Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) | Johns Hopkins Medicine
November 19, 2019 - Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a much more severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). It may affect women of childbearing age. It’s a severe and chronic medical condition that needs attention and treatment. Lifestyle changes and sometimes medicines can help manage symptoms."

Hi Molly. I’m normally a silent watcher. I was diagnosed with PMDD 6 weeks ago. My PMDD is due to my non hormonal copper IUD. I have been struggling with PMDD for many years and it’s so refreshing hearing someone talk about it and normalize it. I have been so scared to go on an SSRI for PMDD because I’ve been on them before for seasons of my life that I’ve struggled with depression and anxiety and they make me a zombie but hearing you talk about cycling has given me confidence that I could try that.

It is wild that so little information is known by doctors about periods. All my doctors have been so dismissive on my pains and symptoms.
My gynecologist was the only one to send me for an ultrasound and vaginal ultrasound. Still can't figure out why my side effects symptoms are so bad and why i suffer from basically all the symptoms. I fear my extreme fatigue will cause me to pass out while driving during work if i suddenly get my period earlier than normal or when my cycle is off. Or unable to move due to my nausea and cold sweats.
More information is needed like this out there. Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm sure it will help someone figure it what is affecting them.

I also have PMDD. I was extremely reluctant to switch from the SSRI I had been on daily for 10 years (Cipralex) to Prozac, but it's been 4 months since I finally "gave in" and switched--and holy moly, Prozac has made a HUGE difference. I started my period at age 10 and almost immediately developed PMDD symptoms (officially diagnosed at 30). I started SSRIs around age 19 and man do I wish my doctor had just immediately put me on Prozac. It feels like I spent all that time suffering when the solution was in plain view!
I'm not 100% cured, I still have 3 or 4 days of EXTREMELY intense anxiety and depression right around the time that I ovulate...but 3 or 4 days is a huge improvement over the 3 weeks I used to experience.

Thank you Molly for posting this! I am recently diagnosed with PMDD brought on by stress. I find UA-cam videos like these very relatable and helpful to help me feel ‘sane’ during bad weeks. It’s helpful to remember a solution is very individual, different treatments work for different people to manage symptoms. Finding a regimen that works for me is taking time. My doctor and I are working to find a solution to manage symptoms… for anyone going through the same thing remember you are not crazy. This too shall pass. You are not alone!

Thanks for the disclaimer at the beginning about how people of all genders being able to experience these issues! I am a trans man and, being that I had PMDD for my entire post-pubescent life until I transitioned, I believe that going on HRT actually saved my life. My PMDD was so bad that I became suicidal multiple times in my adolescence, and I had to be hospitalized several times. No more suicidal thoughts since taking T!

I have PMDD that started right when I got my period and was forever labeled a tough case of depression/anxiety/ideation bc I couldn't help but want to commit for 1/2 the month and it would go away like a light switch when I started bleeding. I really identify with the notion that I knew those thoughts weren't of me and 95% of the time I could manage it, but that other 5% was really really dangerous. For me Testosterone was the saviour, if you're able to do tests at different points in your cycle + a 48hr Testosterone test it might give you more accurate info. So glad you shared 💛

Hi Molly, I'm a relatively new watcher, I found you from the try guys collab and I'm a huge dog lover so I love your guide dog videos. I have pmdd and I can't tell you how important this video is - thank you. Hearing you explain your feelings of being two different people is exactly how I felt, which is something that very few people can understand.
I hope that this video really helps women who are struggling with this understand that there is a name for it and there are solutions they can try and that they need to get to a medical professional who trusts and believes them. This can literally be life-saving. You didn't mention this in your video but my depression and despair during the luteal phase would literally lead me to suicide ideation.
I truly feel like getting diagnosed, and going on Yaz, the only birth control pill approved by the FDA to treat pmdd along with staying on my usual all the time low dose of Zoloft has saved my life. I also made several lifestyle interventions including exercise, nutrition, and giving up alcohol entirely.
Today, I still have about 4 days a month where I feel some mild emotional symptoms and a little bit of brain fog and trouble focusing, but it is nothing like how it used to be and it is sustainable. I try to be gentle with myself and take the rest I need on those days. You made such a good point that all women deal with some level of this even if they don't have a condition like pmdd. Our bodies are not the same every day and it is not fair for others to expect of us or for us to expect from ourselves that we are always the same and always performing at our best. We need to track our cycles, know about an understand our bodies, and be forgiving toward ourselves. Thanks again so much for your vulnerability and sharing, Molly - you are a gift

Then 30 years later an ovarin cyst so we took those too! apparently my appendix went for a walk cause it was stuck behind the right one. Thank you for talking about this. "Dysphoric" is not a word I had in my vocabulary when I begged my mom, sobbing, for birth control, to stop my period, which was the only time I had thoughts that I was very aware were not mine, yet were still in my head, which is a truly terrifying experience I would not wish on anyone. In my case, rather than self-degrading, my thoughts were violent towards my loved ones- let me stress that these thoughts while in my head were not my own, I knew I couldn't wouldn't and didn't want to act on them, which caused horrible dysphoria. It was getting worse with every cycle. I was never properly diagnosed, I've been on birth control ever since, and honestly, I don't think I can handle being OFF of birth control long enough to get a proper diagnosis. Please, if you're reading this and you or someone you know are experiencing something similar to Molly or me which you recognize to be related to your cycle, something I wish I could tell my past self is if you think you can handle holding off a little on treatment, an actual diagnosis will help you a lot in the future, and that these thoughts are not normal and you don't just have to deal with them until they become overwhelming- mine worsened with each period until my breakdown, I could have gotten help sooner if I knew it wasn't normal.

Molly, I dont know if you mention this as I just started the video, but many of your symptoms and also diagnosis CAN go along with Endometriosis. The ONLY way to properly diagnose Endometriosis is through having a Laparoscopy done, but if you have not had it done yet, I really urge you to get checked. I was diagnosed years ago and had many of the same things as you, the PMDD as well as painful periods and ovarian cysts. Is it possible you dont have it? Yes, but should you rule it out? Def, yes.

I don't have PMDD, but I do have a hormone imbalance of too-high androgens and low oestrogen levels, which kicked off in my late teens. It's such a long, frustrating journey to figure out what is causing weird cycles, a range of symptoms, weight loss, etc. I was super fortunate to be put under the care of a lovely Endocrinologist who helped me find the right balance of treatments as well as the right birth control. But it never really ends, and there are always 'blips' that come up, as Molly puts it. I'm in the middle of a blip right now, which I'm trying to work through and trying to see if there's more of a holistic approach that I can take. Thanks for this video Molly, it helps me feel like I'm not alone .

LOVE period talk! its something we need more of in the world because it is worrying, heartbreaking, and shocking to me how hard it is to get help, get diagnosed, get medication/treatments etc. when it comes to issues with periods/the reproductive system. I got my period when I was 9, I've always had MAJOR issues with it. surprise surprise I have endometriosis. lmao it's shocking how little people know and how much misinformation is out there surrounding periods and our reproductive system, anatomy etc. its still taboo for a lot of people which again, is shocking to me. an example of something that shocked me and still does is that the hormonal birth control pill increases the risk of heart issues and heart attacks in women because its a medication that was made by and TESTED ON men/people who are not going to be using it. when it was tested on men/people without periods, it did not cause heart issues but for women/people with periods, it does. this has not changed, the issue has not been fixed. its flabbergasting to me. talking about topics like this and the ones you talked about, makes it easier for peope with periods to get help, advice, and things that we need to be healthy and happy. thank you!

I live with multiple endocrine tumours and cancer so I know exactly how open down hormones can be and how much havoc hormones can play on the body. It is not just spotty skin and cramps hormones I would keep us alive and want to keep our body in a state of homoeostasis. Without them we would not last long and when they are out of balance are the endocrine system isn’t working properly some of us can get extremely extremely sick. Props to you for keeping on top of things.

Thank God for period tracking apps! I started when I was 11 too, but it was almost never regular (until the month I asked my doctor and she referred me to a gynecologist after I only had like 7 in a year) And, when I started Zoloft for anxiety and depression, I immediately noticed that it was more regular, less severe, and I bled for fewer days. I'm lucky that my PMS is mild-moderate, but I still say I prefer my period, because I know I'll get relief. And, as soon as I feel my mood start shifting, I check to see what day I'm on to see if it's hormonal or just mental illness yelling at me.

Thanks for sharing this, Molly. It's really important to normalize periods for those who have them, and it's also important to know what isn't normal. I suffer from depression, but had these random moments where I would get extremely emotional and suicidal and hopeless out of nowhere. And I would lash out to people like crazy. Started tracking it and what do you know, it always exactly started 1,5 week before my period started. The day it started or the day after, completely gone again.
Psychiatrist said it was PMDD but that it was treated with antidepressants and I was already on them for my depression, so there was nothing to do about it.
My GP then said he wanted to try putting me on hormonal birthcontrol to see if it would help. He prescribed me the pill and told me to take it continually without a 'stop week'. The idea behind it was that my hormones would remain more stable so that there'd be less changes in hormones to affect my mood.
I'm so grateful my GP did that, because I literally don't have any severe moodswings anymore (yes, the depression is still there, but no sudden suicidal ideation and overwhelm)
Just sharing this, for who it might be helpful. If antidepressants don't help for your PMDD, maybe contraception might.

This is probably the best UA-cam video I’ve ever watched. I’ve never felt more alone in my PMDD diagnosis, as well as just my awareness that I have it. I feel self conscious that I’m a monster two weeks out of month, and have felt that my family doesn’t actually understand or believe me fully that it’s my PMS/PMDD. my doctor prescribed me an anti depressant but I had really negative side effects. So, I went off of it and just gave up 😢. Your sharing of your story and journey has re-inspired me to try a different medication! I shouldn’t have stopped on my first try, but I was afraid of the side effects. In my case, the anti depressant I tried made me more erratic and I had a worse depressive/emotional episode. To be fair though, my friend recommended it to me, because it worked for her, and I think it would have been better to try what they offer me instead of asking for what my friend took. Thank you so much for sharing Molly, it feels incredible to not be alone in this!!
Also, I too am curious what the uptick in PMDD is about in the last 3 years or so, as well!!

Luckily my previous doctor learnt about it when I brought it up to her and we made a good team. Most doctors I see now still have no idea what it is. Sucks that you have it, though. Hope your symptoms continue to improve x

It took me years to figure out that my negative emotions were correlated with my cycle. I think I had signs stemming back to my early teens. However, I was never regular enough to figure it out. Now, even just knowing that the feelings will likely resolve in a few days is an immense help as compared to when I thought the negative emotions were my permanent reality. I really wish this was something taught in school.

Molly! I don’t remember if I mentioned this condition before to you, I know I’ve mentioned it to other people and other things but I can’t remember if it was on your videos also. I’m glad you got answers and found out what was going on. A large part of physical and mental health issues Was related to my hormone and balances. After going through some things, and no longer having to deal with that, it is such a huge difference.

Molly. Once again thank you for your honest sharing. It rang bells of remembering the long past for me
For me a hysterectomy in my early 40's took away the pain, the ,mood swings etc.
    Times sure have changed!
I am now 78 . Don't quite know how that is true but it is!!!

By the way, if you have estrogen dominance during the first half of your cycle, not drinking alcohol may be helping because it helps estrogen dominance by allowing the liver to process estrogen out of your system more efficiently. Taking a liver support supplement like a good milk thistle supplement (80% silymarin) can help a lot with that, as well as with the hormonal acne for the same reason. Adding in herbs considered to be blood cleansing such as burdock or yellow dock also often really help clear hormonal acne. I have recommended them to many women and seen them have a big positive impact.

thank you so much for sharing Molly! I’ve noticed an uptick in hormone imbalance amongst people that are now in their mid to late 20s, including myself and it honestly really scares me. Like you were saying, I really wonder what’s causing this because it seems like a very specific demographic that’s being affected

For one of my Uni projects, I created an Alexa skill that can tell you what phase of your cycle you're in based on the period start date and average length. It also told you what types of food or exercise will benefit you most in that particular phase. It was mostly a proof of concept but so interesting!

I'm glad you have something that is kind of working at the moment for the symptoms, though possibly not addressing the root cause. Though for many people its not, for some people it is caused by hormone imbalance. Given you know you have hormone imbalance, which may be causing it, it seems to make more sense to treat it hormonally if it can be done. Checking if you have Estrogen Dominance during the first half of your cycle and if so there are medications you can take to lessen your estrogen production like Letrozole. As well as natural approaches. I hope you continue to get good care until you can get to the root of it and find a way to balance those hormones instead of having to compensate.
Taking tetracycline that long can really impact your microbiome (digestion, immunity) negatively.

I often recognise thoughts like "Why are you doing this anyway? You know you will never get that life you want, you aren't fit for that" and then look up what phase in my cycle I'm in and it will be the days leading up to my period. I don't have the good half of the month though, I will get different psychological symptoms during ovulation, during my period itself, etc. I also remember a time where my body was "trying out" new mental health issues during my luteal phases and I recognised thought patterns I had never had before like paranoia in public that were there once and then never again. It's interesting to realise that these things are really just chemical often and that you cannot trust your own thoughts sometimes. I do not have the clear distinction/awareness Molly has where I know those thoughts aren't what I actually believe, but checking what phase I'm actually in when I recognise the thoughts is already a big step forward. I currently don't have an Obgyn, psychologist or endocrinologist, but maybe I'll get there soon if I gather more information and encouragement like this.

I reactivated my facebook and the algorithm quickly fed me clips of Law & Order: SVU episodes. One of them featured Danielle Panabaker, whose character is revealed to have PMDD *in 2005!* It seems that more widespread awareness is popping up in recent years. What a shame that research and awareness is always lagging when it comes to uterine reproductive issues.
Many thanks for sharing your journey 💜

5HTP is such an important one to keep track of! Most people don't know about that one, but it's the precursor to the body generating serotonin. I've always supplemented 5HTP any time I've been on SSRIs and needed to wean off.

I got mine four weeks before age 10. But bra was 12/13 and started menopause at 55. I'm 64 now...I do not miss periods...barely get hot flushes , so not so bad. In fact better, because i was always colder than anyone else. I don't take anything. So while this is fun there is more to come...best start looking into now so you can prepare.

Thankfully I’ve not ever really had PMS symptoms but I Alcoa’s get REALLY bad cramps. I had to go home from school a few times because of cramps (I usually got cramps on weekends so it wasn’t that often at school)
I was sick a few times of would be retching with nothing coming up it hurt that much and I couldn’t bare the thought of standing up or doing anything. Not even ibuprofen would help if I took it too late or too early and if it did help it didn’t help much. I ended up going on the DEPO injection which stopped my periods all together and it’s been a life saver 🙏 I know you said you can’t do hormonal birth control but I was just sharing my experience

I have PMDD and PCOS and I only get two good weeks out of a month. I got my first period at 13 and I’ve never been regular. I started having problems at 25 and I’m now 36 and I finally got my PCOS diagnosis at 35. I’m estrogen dominance, hight testosterone and excess androgens. I too did the Dutch test. I’m current on HRT but just take progesterone.

I think there could be a few reasons why pmdd is being diagnosed more frequently. Disclaimer: I am not a doctor or researcher, I'm still working on my Anthropology degree.
    1. As a society we are more open about discussing our periods. We're able to discuss periods with friends, coworkers, acquaintances, and social media. So we're able to identify if something is not working normally. (Ex. I thought "coughing attacks" after exercise was normal, I got diagnosed with asthma at 25).
    2. Something in our environment could be causing/ worsening symptoms. Medicine is severely behind for people with uteruses. We've been excluded from so many studies, or just ignored completely. Once the increase from my #1 idea levels out hopefully this reason can be researched properly. (It better be researched properly, we deserve great medical care too.)
