The REAL Reason You Can’t Find Your Hair Type | LOIS Hair Typing System (Pictures and Video)

  • The LOIS Hair Typing System with Pictures and Video. This video has a deep exploration of cottony vs spongy texture.
Hair typing systems are usually flawed because they don't show the full story of your hair. It can be very frustrating to figure out your hair type because hair texture plays such a huge part in what we see. The Andre Walker Hair Typing system only mentions hair strand pattern, but that's only a portion of what it takes to begin to understand your hair. This is where the LOIS Hair Typing System comes into play. This system prompts you to explore hair strand pattern, strand thickness, and hair texture.
The 5 main textures are thready, wiry, cottony, spongy, and silky. This video will go deep into exploring cottony versus spongy textured hair as I take multiple steps to distinguish my own.

I love how much effort you put into your hair experiments. It's so informative and helpful. ❤️ I used to think I was 4C, but it was perptually dry and high porosity after coloring last summer. Now that I take care of my hair, it went back to low porosity with a noticable curl pattern. I gave up trying to figure out my hair type. As long as it's healthy and growing, I'm happy with whatever I have.

I'm the same. I thought I was 4a/b with a little 3c and 4c to keep it interesting. After getting it properly moisturized, it looks like I'm 3a/b with a little 2c and 4c to keep it interesting. Now I'm just trying to figure out a way to keep it healthy with the least amount of effort, no matter the curl type.

😳 This topic was such a challenge to research! The LOIS Hair Typing System isn't widely talked about and there aren't any visual aids and examples to look at. Most of the haircare forums that were around years ago are outdated and the data can no longer be accessed.
So, of course, in true Toya fashion 🤓 I decided to nerd out and create a new and updated resource to help you out. I even have a PDF download for you to compare and test your own hair texture. I love what I do, and more importantly, I love helping you. 🥰

Girl, this was legit research, much appreciated 😊 I don't usually recommend other ytubers but if you check out Greenbeauty's channel ( she is natural 4c sista as well) she did a similar thing to you and broke down the differences on the systems and if they are helpful and also agrees that the LOIS and Andre system are incomplete own their own. But I really like your video b/c you really explained everything in an easy to digest way and provided clear examples, made much easier to see the differences.

THIS HELPED ME SO MUCH. I have never been able to find my hair type because it is more typical for type 3 hair to have 'o' curls whereas I have mostly, if not completely 's' curls. Also I would have never referred to my hair as silky because it has some frizz but now I know it can be silky and frizzy. Honestly, life saver! Thank you

    What I learned:
My hair's 4A/B with a patch of 3C in the back. My 4A hair is almost completely S shaped with the rare I or kinky straight strand, my 4B hair is O, S, or L depending on which part of my head it's from, and my 3C hair is S shaped too (sometimes it can almost confused it for 2A at some points). I'm torn between whether I have a cotton or spongy texture (learned somewhere that brown natural hair has a tendency to be drier and have less natural sheen than black or darker natural hair irregardless of how well moisturized it is, which for me is true, so it's hard to tell). Very little sheen or shine without oil both stretched and flat ironed. My hair strands are a mixture of course and fine. I have medium to high density (mostly medium).

My hair hates coconut oil, gel and responds to simple water and a light leave in moisturizer. The back is curly, the top is wavy and wont curl, the sides are perfect coils and the very front is straight. I'm growing out a mohawk and hope to have a full on 70s fro by December.

I've found through my daughters hair that different part of their heads - like the front - have looser coils or waves then say the middle or back part. Also the length of their hair is a factor too. I’m transitioning and I’ve been relaxing for about the last 10 or 11 years of my life, it’s been 6 months since I decided to put the chemical down and I’ve been really nervous about getting to know my natural hair, the only thing I know is that I’m 4c, low porosity so this will really help me, I’m soo so soooooo happy you did this, thank you!

Absolutely love this, thanks for all the time, research and effort you put in for this video. It’s so hard to determine exactly which box you fit in. You are soooo right and I think it’s safe to say that you may have more than one characteristic and go with the most dominant! I’m 4 years natural and still have ?’s and trying to figure things out!😩🤦🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️

Grest job as usual! Most important take away: No one, not even twins have the same hair type. The hair allover your head is your unique gift. Love it because it is your crown! Stay Golden Queen!

Great vid! I know I have mostly S with some O. My hair is medium porosity. My hair has high shine when its flat ironed professionally, and high sheen when it's curly with gels or pomades added. The sheen is low when its product free. Guess I have to study your chart to figure out my texture.

Thanks for this video the LOIS system is the missing piece that makes hair type less confusing. My hair seems to be the complete opposite of yours. I have s shaped, wiry, cotton hair. Your son's hair looks like my grandmothers texture and type, she had noticeable coils in her hair and it was very soft and fine. This is very interesting for the nerd in me🤓

Thanks for this. I think this may free some naturals from the stigmas and negativity that has arisen within the Andre Walker system.
My hair has os and s’s and I think it’s probably medium sized strands with some frizz. I’m not sure about the texture though. It’s definitely not silky but I’m not sure if it’s cottony, spongy or what. It does kinda shine but I have trouble with the whole sheen/shine. I may have to get one of my daughters to help me out. I did enjoy the video though. Thanks again!

Haha, i have l.o.s, fine hair, and spongey texture, my grandmother, who is a hairstylist, told me I have 3 different kinds of hair and 5 layers of it, so this helped know what the heck was going on up there!

I love this video. I think that I’m a combo of mostly O with a few L’s & S’s . Wow I actually have fine strands, I always thought I had coarse hair. I’m probably thready because when I was relaxed that mess had to be rinsed fast, and whenever I got it colored it would take color and bleach well. I think I have a little bit of cottoney too. 😂
    You are a trooper.
Side note a while ago you did a video we’re you mentioned clip ins helped your hair. I just wanted to say that I finally bought some clip ins thanks to you. I like how one bundle looks but I’m definitely buying another bundle.

Heeeyy!! 👋🏾 This typing thing is so interesting, right? I love how you’re identifying your hair right away...Yes! Clip in are actually my favorite protective style outside of twists in a bun. I’ve only worked with one clip in company and I still have the clip ins. Great when I want to give my hair a break. I hope you enjoy them!
