Totally agree. I didn’t see any progress in my hair until I started using oils. I introduced oil to my hair routine in the past months, and it was the game changer. I use coconut oil twice a week and castor oil and sweet almond oil + vitamin E in my LOC and I use castor oil as a pre poo before my washing routine and it definitely protect my strands.

This title made my heart stop for a second! Our grandmothers, tias and mamas knew what they were doing. Omgosh lol....I remember all of these hair greases. Dax tar smelled so bad. I loved Indian hemp, specifically the one by Dax. Yea I had no issues when I used hair grease. My hair was healthy and flourishing. Sigh
I've noticed this trend recently of stylists saying "no oil" . Its usually from those that have or endorse a product line. Their hair usually looks dry too imho. EVOO is my holy grail
They usually say it because natural girls use products that have a lot of oils and then add more, so they end up with oily hair that will remain dry, because on top of using tons of oils they don't shampoo often and don't remove that oily layer from the hair.
Yeaaa my salon does the same, now I have to tell all my clients that which I don't particularly like. Planning on leaving soon but gathering all the techniques first so I can tweak to my preference. The owner doesn't even want products with oils in it like mielle, curls, and doesn't use a leave-in at all. We do use sulfates so that's a plus. Oh and we also cannot promote or do any other styles besides the wash and go. (Clients and stylists!!) Been wanting some box braids but she'll tell me to take em out. I won't be there long.
I’m so happy for this video as I’d recently come across a hair detox challenge by some cosmetologists and wanted to get your take as the challenge was eschewing oils and butters particularly coconut, castor and Shea butter and they claimed from a scientific perspective it wasn’t beneficial to the hair and blocked moisture. Glad to know I don’t have to chuck my oils!
I have been seeing those 30 day hair detox challenge videos too. I would love for her to make a video with her scientific take on why the method is good or not 🤔
I was starting to second guess myself because I love using oils in my twist but I’ve been seeing lots of videos saying oils are bad and cause dryness. I’m glad you explained everything so well!
Jamaican Black Castor Oil...... I love how you broke this down because it’s some cosmologist that are online saying oils and butters are bad unless they are with in a product. That penetrating oils block your hair from getting water in etc. I tried to wash and only have the oils from my leave in and moisturizer my hair was like no sis you know better. At the end of the day it’s like you said balance, it’s about how much you are using of anything. Just like too much water can be bad for your hair , having a lot of build up from oils and butters can be bad as well. I have learned in my almost 50 yrs and been natural for more than most of it, listen to your hair and do what our hair responds well too. Make sure to clean you scalp appropriately and to clarify at least once a month depending on what products you are using. Not everyone can do wash and goes ie my hair hates gels of all kinds and I have 4 clearly different textures in my hair so I don’t have a unified curl pattern to work with. But I can rock twist outs and braid outs with no issue or just a puff. Loved loved this video thank you ☺️
reikun86 it’s important to get quality so check the bottle and make sure there is NOTHING ELSE IN IT. I go with Sunny Isle I can trust they aren’t putting things in to cut it ie other oils like safflower oil things like that. Even if they are good oils they shouldn’t be the main ingredient over the Jamaican Black Castor oil that’s when you lose the effectiveness . It’s all about the amounts to get the desired results 💙
Well I have been using oils and it has been working for me. My hair has been growing especially when I used to take Medformen as medication and it's true, it does take your hair out among other things. I took myself off of it. Started using oils to grease my hair, and my hair has been growing since. I've used jbc, coconut, tea tree, peppermint, lavender, rosemary. They've worked for me. When I was a child, my mom used bergamont, sulfur 8, and the blue one, I can't think of it right now, the company that makes the grease also makes a perm kit, but it wasn't blue magic. My hair green and it was long. You don't have to grease your hair every day, but for us naturals you got to have something on your scalp. Our hair gets dry. I spray aloe vera juice, or water on my hair. Works well for me.
Just purchased your book! I'm so excited to learn about curly hair. I have the complete opposite and I'm so excited to educate myself for my clients while I'm on set for filming! Thank you so much!!
Brown Beauty I don’t trust any castor oil anymore. Once it interacts with your body chemistry, it’s a different story.. Smellsgood in the bottle. But once it’s on your hair/scalp for a few days, then it smells different.
Brittany S Ok. That’ll work and is good for your hair. As long as you wash it out after it has time to penetrate as a hot oil treatment, I think that’ll be fine. I just think that using castor oil or other stinky oils /greases on the scalp/hair and allowing them to remain on daily basis doesn’t smell good and leads to buildup.
I would take a spray bottle with water and drops of black castor oil. And spray my scalp and locs when needed. Thanks for the confirmation that I’m doing what right for my scalp and hair💕😊
I’d say either castor oil , black seed oil or Shea butter . I grew up to coconut oil but These aforementioned oils have saved my hair. Shea butter literally gave my Curls life . I saw a major improvement in how lifted and moisturized my curls looked after using Shea butter and castor oil and ghee in a hot oil treatment for six months.
@@xenabbb I havent used black seed oil alone , its always Been in combination with other oils so I can’t definitively answer your question . Something I have used alone is vitamin e oil and that oil has actually created new hair growth (around my edges where was little hair due to stress , breakage , etc) after about two months you start seeing this growth . If you have coarser and thick hair like from 3 to 4c hair (or combination hair ) , coating your edges and ends with castor oil will definitely protect your hair from breakage etc . And by the way , Castor oil has saved my Caucasian friend’s hair (thick Straight hair ) that had some breakage /hair loss during cold winter season so all around that’s a good one to start with . Hope this helps !
I think there might be a misunderstanding. The notion, from my understanding, is not to use raw oils on the hair. Products formulated with oils are fine if you are using a strong enough shampoo to remove it. Products with oils can also work to lubricate the strand. Using oils and butters and then only co-washing or using very mild surfactants can cause dehydrated hair.
@Florence Girrrrrrrl you just reminded me of a time me and Bae oiled up with Coconut Oil on our vacation trip to Anguilla, we got COOKED so you right!!!! 😂😂😂😂
Coconut oil is not a good oil to be used on your face, it can cause acne, it's highly comedogenic, but it's okay if you use it on other parts of your body
I've tried a lot of different oils like coconut, shea nut, (black) castor, avocado, almond, olive, Amla, argan, hemp, but what works the best for my hair and scalp seems to be vitamine E. And it works wonders for your skin and nails to without leaving an oily shiny residu. I always use a very small amount with some water when applying it on the skin
I'm 56 years old and I truly think hair products and food had better ingredients back in the day. Hair was natural, had shampoo/hotcomb once a month. No hair dryers. Playing outside all day made us crave more water. Better food, less heat and more water enhanced hair growth.
THANK YOU for recommending an oil that's equivalent to coconut oil! I know coconut oil has so many beneficial qualities, but my hair hates it! I've tried it every which way, too. By itself, in a blend with other oils, in leave ins/ creams....but nope. Any product with coconut oil disagrees with my hair. My hair responds well to argan oil though, & I've been wanting to try others
@@geetika6540 It took me a long time to realize coconut oil was a problem. I'm a hair product junkie and have tried a lot of products - literally zero leave ins, stylers, or oils/ oil blends that contain coconut oil work for my hair. But, like I mentioned on my original comment, I've tried it as just the oil - which was awful. But I know sometimes your hair only does well with certain oils used in certain ways. So, also like I mentioned, besides using it alone & hating it, I've used it in more than one blend of oils, as well as many, many stylers, and all of them gave my hair the same awful feeling. I'm also a total hair product junkie, and since I always read the ingredients list, over time, I began to get an excellent grasp of what works for my hair and what doesn't work. For example, Certain ingredients are only good for my hair if they are only towards the bottom of the list, others my hair loves no matter what. I actually just recently caved and bought Camille Rose curl maker, despite coconut oil being the 2nd ingredient after water. People with similar textures, density, and porosity as myself were getting such amazing results, so when I saw a travel size curl maker while at Wal-Mart, I decided to buy it. At 1st it seemed great! My curls actually felt ok at 1st, and looked nice. But, within less than 24 hours, that ick feeling in my hair again, and I had used it pretty sparingly.
I damaged my hair very badly....colouring, used different kinds of shampoo. etc. now! back to basic that they are using for a thousand years like natural shampoo and of course oil. Cheers for sharing, keep safe.
I think it's typically because fine hair usually tends to get weighed down by most products on the market today, so I think a foam or styling/shaping cream would work best after the initial blowout.. I agree that there is not quite as many products out there for fine hair as there is for every other type of hair..
nahhh my indian mum used to slather coconut oil on my hair all the time when I was a hair, and I used to have really thick long and soft hair, but since I started doing my own hair and avoiding oil, it has gotten so thin and brittle😩😩😩
Gday luv Jamaican Black Castor Oil is Amazing But I would take Virgin olive oil Sneak Sulfur8 and Doo Gro combo AMAZING Just bought lavender peppermint sweet almond and argon oils I like combo already have Grapeseed Coconut Extra Virgin olive oil and basil oils
Oils, butters, grease, all help to hold moisture in. That’s what they’re for. They’re not bad for your hair if you know what you’re doing when using them.
I use to not use oil. When I did use it was on dry hair and my hair hated it. It was as if my hair was burned. I then learned I had to put it on wet hair. Every sense that my hair has been happy. I also use the flexible comb. My hair also found the oils that made my hair happy such as. Jamaican black castor oil, rosemary oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, Teatree oil and almond oil. I would then use Shea butter with a protective style big chunky braids and a scarf to cover the hair on the weekends I wear my hair out during the week put my hair back.
I truly appreciate how thorough you were about explaining which oils penetrate vs coat the hair 🙌🏽! The one oil I would take with me is hemp seed oil, it works amazingly for skin + my hair.😆
I used Trader Joe’s tea tree conditioner and I put a hot oil treatment on top, used it overnight, and my hair was so moisturized. (I used a bunch of oils like Olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil...)
It's so refreshing to see science explaining, instead of simple uneducated opinion! Thank you. Would you recommend oils on a thin, frizzy, wavy caucasian hair? I suffer with breakage and frizz.
I would bring the Caivil fusion oil, it's a mixture of many different oils including black castor oil, coconut oil, rosemary oil, peppermint oil, avocado oil, lavender oil, etc. Much love from South Africa
FYI: It makes my hair crunchy, dry, and brittle too. It acts as a protein. Next time you use it, follow it up with a deep moisturizing conditioner. Keep the moisturizing conditioner in as long as you can stand it. Preferably overnight; if not overnight then get under a dryer with a plastic for 30 minutes. You will be pleasantly surprised how your hair with soften up with hydration. Hope that helps.
Excellent. Thank you. I'm going to show this video to my 7th grade English students. I want them to understand how science is used in a real world way. And that knowing how to read well will help in any future career they choose. Thank you again.
Hey Queen! I am LOVING your content. As a lover of new knowledge I enjoy hearing the breakdown of "Why" and "How" products operate in our hair. I appreciate your passion for sharing this info 🤗
I love the education you give about the natural hair journey!! So I can choose and use hemp/grapeseed/ sunflower /saffflower to help detangle and choose avocado/olive/babassu to penetrate when I use LCO/LOC ... I was trying to access the correct application
My absolute favorite oil is Argon Oil, but I don't use it very regularly because it's so expensive. This is the one I would take with me for a 3 month span. Great video! 💕
I'm so glad I came across your video. I've been researching hot oil treatments for my daughter's dry hair and wasn't sure if and what to use. Thanks for breaking it down.
Avocado. The only oil that my hair truly loves ❤️ I stopped using extra oil in my hair years ago because it was causing more problems than solving...but I use products with high oil content of oils that I like. Most hair products are just oil and butters anyways
Olive Oil because I can use it on my skin and hair and they both do well with Olive oil. I have very dry skin so a lot of times in the winter I use olive oil as my facial moisturizer. Yes, my face! Because it keeps my skin moisturized in the cold weather. My skin loves. I have spoken to women from Italy, they use the olive oil on the skin also. And my scalp likes the olive oil.
WAIT! Let me grab a pencil. I didn't know we were about to have class. 😂 Thanks for the explanation!! Also, to answer your question: Olive Oil!! I use olive oil for everything (cooking, haircare, and skincare).
Please can you do a video on when to use these different oils and butters on your hair? For example do a video on the steps to take or when to use oils, moisture, butters, conditioner ect. Thank you 😊 💚💚
Coconut oil breaks my hair off and when wearing my hair blow dried, oil in my hair makes my hair go flat and I can't hold curls. A drop of argan oil after blow dry does well for me. Now I am doing more wet sets and braid outs my hair needs more moisture. I am going to dry a few oils.
Some people don’t like coconut oil because it has a lot of protein, so it may not be a moisturising, more strengthening. My low porosity hair doesn’t like coconut oil .
Good video. Made a lot of sense. I’m a stylist who just cut all my hair off due to damage and bored during the “stay” home. I wanna grow my hair tailbone length. I would be soooo happy. I’ll learn the other ways to follow you too. Thanks!
As an aromatherapist, I use a treatment mixture of pure Rosemary and Peppermint essential oils with distilled water on my scalp to control dry scalp, itching, and dandruff. My scalp is always clean now. I no longer have those issues. Now that my scalp is healthier, my hair is also healthier and growing longer and thicker. I'm using Design Essentials Herbal Complex for hair and scalp treatment. It keeps my hair moisturized; not greasy. I usually order it from Sally's online.
After going natural a hair stylist once asked me “why don’t you use oils in your hair?”. I didn’t understand what he meant when he asked me; and I was not using oils in my hair at the time; but after watching Curly Chemistry videos NOW I KNOW the great benefits of using OILS in the hair.

I never subscribed so fast in my life. This science is giving me life!!
Awww thank you!! :-)
SAME! 🤩
Same
Same 😁
I've noticed this trend recently of stylists saying "no oil" . Its usually from those that have or endorse a product line. Their hair usually looks dry too imho. EVOO is my holy grail
@My 2 Cents Give thanks for a great stylist!. Yep it's usually the ones with a product to sell...
They usually say it because natural girls use products that have a lot of oils and then add more, so they end up with oily hair that will remain dry, because on top of using tons of oils they don't shampoo often and don't remove that oily layer from the hair.
So it’s a new trend because I have never heard any natural say that dumb
It probably depends on how much oil your hair naturally produces.
I would love for her to make a video with her scientific take on why the method is good or not 🤔
Yes to the education!
Thank you!! :-)
Late to the party but JOJOBA OIL good for my hair, lips, skin, heals cuts an bruises
Bu is it a penetrating oil or a coating oil??
I searched later and is a coating oil
Thank you! I was wondering this!
Jojoba Oil is supposed to be the closest oil to our natural hair oil secretion (sebum).
Argan oil is also so hydrating
I was starting to second guess myself because I love using oils in my twist but I’ve been seeing lots of videos saying oils are bad and cause dryness. I’m glad you explained everything so well!
Too much oils base products yes could cause dryness but oils are great Gor your hair...use it in moderation
Loved loved this video thank you ☺️
Dana Fisher I just bought some Jamaican Black castor oil. I haven’t used it yet, but I hear good things.
reikun86 it’s important to get quality so check the bottle and make sure there is NOTHING ELSE IN IT.
If I could only use one oil for the next 3 months than I would choose Jamaican black castor oil.
YESS
As someone with high porosity hair, same.
Yes I was looking for this.....
Oh, I remember now.
It was Ultra Sheen hair grease
Just purchased your book! I'm so excited to learn about curly hair. I have the complete opposite and I'm so excited to educate myself for my clients while I'm on set for filming! Thank you so much!!
On a desert island i would take castor oil even though i can't stand the smell, it's worth it for stronger healthy looking hair.
Gem Thomson Smells like machine oil.😩
Castor oil doesnt penetrate my strands but it helps my scalp
They sell the scented ones I usually get the coconut one.. smells so good
Brown Beauty I don’t trust any castor oil anymore.
I primarily come here to hear you talk. I could listen to you talk about chemistry all day long. #blacknerdsunite
I saw a major improvement in how lifted and moisturized my curls looked after using Shea butter and castor oil and ghee in a hot oil treatment for six months.
do you black seed oil on your scalp or the lengths of your hair? how has it helped?
@@xenabbb I havent used black seed oil alone , its always Been in combination with other oils so I can’t definitively answer your question . Something I have used alone is vitamin e oil and that oil has actually created new hair growth (around my edges where was little hair due to stress , breakage , etc) after about two months you start seeing this growth . If you have coarser and thick hair like from 3 to 4c hair (or combination hair ) , coating your edges and ends with castor oil will definitely protect your hair from breakage etc . And by the way , Castor oil has saved my Caucasian friend’s hair (thick
Straight hair ) that had some breakage /hair loss during cold winter season so all around that’s a good one to start with .
There's absolutely nothing wrong with raw oils.
I would bring Coconut Oil with me on the island, it’s good for hair and skin and you can cook with it 👍🏽
@Florence Girrrrrrrl you just reminded me of a time me and Bae oiled up with Coconut Oil on our vacation trip to Anguilla, we got COOKED so you right!!!! 😂😂😂😂
Coconut oil, gave me more black heads on my face.
@@NellyWelly16 yea she they are not good for hair or skin
Coconut oil is not a good oil to be used on your face, it can cause acne, it's highly comedogenic, but it's okay if you use it on other parts of your body
@@jktm7785 Coconut oil agree with some of us very well....what works for you might not work for some one else...
The one I would pack would be castor oil. Castor oil is my favorite oil. Thank you so much for this informative video! The peoples need to know!!!
I've heard a lot that topical oils clog pores. Makes sense but I'm looking for facts now. So thanks for posting this!
I'm 56 years old and I truly think hair products and food had better ingredients back in the day. Hair was natural, had shampoo/hotcomb once a month. No hair dryers.
Playing outside all day made us crave more water.
Better food, less heat and more water
enhanced hair growth.
Sure did
The good old days
Youthfulness can attribute to healthy & quick growing hair too. The older u get sometimes u have to work for ur hair/skin.
The food quality has definitely declined...by the time we receive our fruits and veg, many of the nutrients are gone
Very very true
I can’t go without my Argan oil. I love the light feel of this oil
Thanks
Love your videos. Thank you.
The oil I’m bring along with me is Sweet Almond oil I just discovered that my hair loves it.
That's cool, I ended up with a bulk leftover bottle from trying to make body wash, a failed project. I'll try putting it in my hair!
I swear by olive oil!
My 4vc hair enjoys almond oil too
Just started using almond oil myself! ♡♡♡
I love Almond oil too I swear people sleep on it. It’s the only oil that softens for me
THANK YOU for recommending an oil that's equivalent to coconut oil!
How do you tell if coconut oil is the one causing issues in your hair?
Thank for you commenting this! My hair hates it too
@@geetika6540 Use it by itself for maybe two weeks and ses
I damaged my hair very badly....colouring, used different kinds of shampoo. etc. now! back to basic that they are using for a thousand years like natural shampoo and of course oil. Cheers for sharing, keep safe.
Definitely olive oil. I use it on my skin, my hair, in my food, everything!
Love the science. My curly hair needs some serious rehab. Knowing the chemistry helps. Thanks.
Grapeseed oil. Great for my skin and makes my hair shiny.
One of the best natural haircare videos I have seen in years
Thank you for taking the time to educate us : )
I’m so glad you mentioned it... I saw where a hairdresser(s) mentioned not to use a oils too I was like 🤔 nahhh not listening to that one!
If you did, you would see your broken off ends I'm the sink.
Think about specializing hair care for fine, coily, high porosity hair. Everyone neglects the fine hair women. Thank you for your channel.
Yes same here 😂 Harshita 👍
Same here too I'm going to start sludering oils on my hairs again
That's exactly me

When you were a hair😂😂😂 I'm sorry
I never stopped using hair grease ever, I still use it in me & my youngest daughter hair!!!!
Gday luv
Jamaican Black Castor Oil is
Amazing
But I would take Virgin olive oil
Sneak Sulfur8 and Doo Gro combo
AMAZING
Just bought lavender peppermint sweet almond and argon oils
I like combo already have Grapeseed Coconut Extra Virgin olive oil and basil oils
Castor oil I love the thickness and it's great moisture retaining abilities
Oils mixed with butters..WINNER FOR ME!! Oils on their own.. EPIC FAIL!! Great video as always!!

Much love from South Africa
Lerato Moshoeshoe that sounds like a bomb oil! 😆 Thank you for watching! 🤗
That sounds amazing!!
All I know is coconut oil makes my hair crunchy.
Same here! Can't take it!
There are Black-owned brands that are coconut-oil free, like Product Junkie Naturals.

Avocado. The only oil that my hair truly loves ❤️
I stopped using extra oil in my hair years ago because it was causing more problems than solving...but I use products with high oil content of oils that I like. Most hair products are just oil and butters anyways
Does it make your hair grow?
Olive Oil because I can use it on my skin and hair and they both do well with Olive oil. I have very dry skin so a lot of times in the winter I use olive oil as my facial moisturizer. Yes, my face! Because it keeps my skin moisturized in the cold weather. My skin loves. I have spoken to women from Italy, they use the olive oil on the skin also. And my scalp likes the olive oil.

What a wonderful lady. Love her to bits. I have straight Caucasian hair and having horrid haircut and I am learning heaps. God Bless. Xx
Coconut oil breaks my hair off and when wearing my hair blow dried, oil in my hair makes my hair go flat and I can't hold curls. A drop of argan oil after blow dry does well for me. Now I am doing more wet sets and braid outs my hair needs more moisture. I am going to dry a few oils.
coconut is drying for a big % of people.
For me avocado and argon oils are the ones for meeee
Some people don’t like coconut oil because it has a lot of protein, so it may not be a moisturising, more strengthening. My low porosity hair doesn’t like coconut oil .
