- Today's episode is near and dear to my heart. My dad was a HUGE fan of our fruit tree adventures, but he passed away before he had a chance to taste any of the fruit from our farm. This tree we're pruning today was planted in memoriam of him and his influence on my life (and this channel). It's also our first time pruning this Weeping Santa Rosa Plum tree.

Our apple trees and quince trees have broken dormancy here in Temecula man , its been warm , R.I.P to your pops man im sure hes proud of what you guys have done with the orchard !
Ah yes, Temecula. Lori and I met in San Diego and lived in San Marcos before moving to Phoenix in the mid-90's. If it wasn't for Lori's family here in Phoenix we would have probably wound up in Temecula ourselves. Similar climate to ours, but a bit cooler in the evenings during the summer which is nice!

Sorry for your loss I know it hurts we just lost our dad. He loved eating fruits, we planted all his favorite varieties on our homestead that we started a year ago and he was so looking forward to when the guavas fruited. I think we’ll plant a apple tree to remember him it was the last thing he was able to eat.
I'm so sorry for your loss and know just how you feel! I say plant that apple tree. Every time I look at that tree it reminds me of him and I smile. I imagine it will be the same for you as well, especially if you have other trees planted on your property. That one will be that much more special.
This video is fabulous! Planted one of these last year and I've been staring at it and scratching my head for weeks not knowing how to handle the weeping nature. Now I've got a game plan.....
Glad to hear it Mason. This is one I've had practice with going all the way back to my childhood. It took us a few years to get it down, but eventually we had a really cool umbrella looking peach tree that you could literally sit under and be completely enveloped by the canopy!

@@EdgeofNowhereFarm Today was my sweet dads birthday & as our siblings texted fav memories of him I shared my Santa Rosa plum story. On Mothersday my daughter & I searched out the house I was raised in & altho much has changed I was able to ID the house b/c of that big plum tree in the backyard. We share a similar sweet memory. 🥰

Thanks for the tips. I'm in the market for a Santa Rosa but I haven't found a pair of plum trees in stock locally yet. I think my neighbor let his freeze down to the almond rootstock back in 2019.
It's hard to beat the Santa Rosa pretty much anywhere in the Southwestern US. We had both a standard and weeping Santa Rosa on the old property and the weeping version fruited younger than the standard tree. Could just be the root stock, but we were pleasantly surprised.
Did you see if anyone has cuttings you can get? Better, start plum seeds, and then graft when they're 1/2-3/4 inch caliper.
@@marschlosser4540 I have had issues before with fig cuttings that were carrying unwanted plant viruses. So I prefer lab-grown/tested plant materials.
@@SlackerU to each their own. I was raised to do it myself. I do like tissue cultured plants. Many carry a virus, but I found zinc is a major healer for any virus. As copper is high here, I'm not worried about bacteria. Research shows even leaving used surgical instruments on a sheet of copper kills off bacteria and fungi.

I've got a Weeping Santa Rosa that I planted as bare root this past spring (2023), and it's very vigorous. I was looking for a good instructional video on how I should prune it; thank you for providing one! Any updates on this tree? How's it looking this year?
Glad this one could give you some ideas on pruning. The tree is doing really well. We just harvested a few dozen fruit from it last weekend. I'll see if I can get an update on it soon.
Wonderful as a remembrance......my neighbor passed yesterday. He often helped me with his tractor. I was in the process of creating an area as our orchard (Hidden Orchard) and we are going to dedicate a tree in it to him.....he had moved from Apple Valley. I am goinmg to plant an Apple Tree to him. Which one do you recommend?
I love this idea for your neighbor Dan. I think the symbolism in a tree as remembrance is hard to beat. Your guys' weather is very similar to ours up there, so I would probably lean towards a Golden Dorsette. They grow very aggressive and fruit really well for us. No need for a pollinator either. If you decide on that, I highly recommend getting one from Reid at RSI Growers if you're ever down this way. His apple trees in particular really thrive in our soil.
How is this tree developing for you? I have one going on it's 3rd summer in Glendale, AZ, and I find the pruning to be challenging with the crazy long, unruly, and weepy branches. I get some fruit, but not too productive fruitwise so far either.
Ours is much the same, but production isn't our primary focus with this one (which is unusual for us). We are pruning back heavy in the Winter and only keeping the highest branches on the tree to try to shape it into a high breaking, weeping tree. After writing this out it's making me realize we need to give an update on this tree and also show how we're pruning it. 🤔
Is there a way to keep a weeping Santa Rosa short?
Yes, but you would want to do a steep cut on the scion upon planting. We purposely kept this one tall, so we can utilize it as a shade tree. Otherwise we would have cut that trunk back by half or so to keep it shorter. Just keep in mind, if it grows aggressively like ours, 4-5 foot of new growth will touch the ground on a 4' tall trunk! With that you'll need to make some Summer pruning cuts which can cause issues if you're in a desert area like ours. Too much stress after pruning during the growing season can kill a tree around here.

What is the white surrounding the bottom of the tree? Is there a reason for that instead of painting it?
Great question Kristin. That was our initial attempt at keeping small rodents/rabbits from munching on the bark of these young trees. Since then, we've found the 3-in-1 Plant Guard from IV Organics affords the same protection with it's natural essential oils. Once these trees are a few years older it won't be a concern and we'll have neither the plastic guard or paint.

That's a great idea, a shady place to sit and contemplate nothing but peace. I do that under the pine in the yard. Lower branches are 'way overhead and on a warm day, the tree smells great. It was planted when the mining company built the houses in the early 50s. But, it's on the southeast side of the front yard (weedy stretch? Wildflowers?). That's the only thing I don't like.
I have to hand it to you Martin, you paint amazing pictures with your writing. As I was reading this I could almost smell a pine forest.

People tell me my writing is reminiscent of Heinlein. :) I can hardly wait for the citrus to bloom. they rival the fountain roses, a sort of competition to see which gets the most attention. But, the best is always the apple...Make sure when the apples bloom, you take chairs out in the evening to sit holding Lori's hand and enjoy the magic.
