    That yellowish rust that was on the shears after you got the rust off is due to the acid causing further corrosion. It needs to be neutralized to stop that from happening. And make sure you never leave an open container in your garage with strong acid or even a tray with an acid solution. The vapors that come off the solution will cause everything around it to rust. Don't ask how i know... lol.

    What container do you put the acid in that would be safe? When you had the rusty shears sitting in there overnight

    It's called flash rust. It happens when you let it sit for a day or so.
