- Lots of fancy and pretty hiking sticks out there...but how tough and durable are they really? How many uses should a hiking stick have? I went to my locally owned hardware store. Some guys have 36 easy-to-lose survival gadgets weighing down their stick, while you just used a hoe that can serve many more purposes than you can carry gadgets. The only mods I would do is some non-slip cap for the hook and some groove to turn it into a staff sling.

I am reminded of the fad amongst those who are convinced "only they will survive"; to put a suitcase of "stuff" in an Altoids tin. I only hope those who use, make, or modify staffs do not copy that practice.
I agree, a grip for two purposes. 1: Comfort, if you're holding it for hours a wider handle would be more comfortable. 2: For people to not be intimidated by the "weapon" on the end. Have a friend who made a cane that looked like a rifle, went to visit his father in ICU and had a "visit" from Security as people said he carried in a weapon.
Everyone that I know carries their water in a camelbak any more, so there is also your small pack for basic survival gear. fishing line, hooks, etc, spare camp or filet knife hatchet, machete, some dried rations, compass, a couple of lighters, and some dryer lint for fires - whatever you always want to bring because you aren't going to forget to grab your water. lol
At first, I had some doubts. Then I realized that is a very versatile tool.

Travel around frozen lakes and rivers and be glad you have this type of stick should you go through the ice or need to pull ice away for bank lines . You got me thinking bro . Good advice and perfect walking stick . THX

Greetings from Maryland! Love the idea so much i ran out and made two. I have only bee on a few short hikes and have already gotten several inquiries about my hiking stick! One mod i did add was wrapping and gluing a strip of old bicycle innertube to the exposed metal leaving 1/2 inch exposed at the end for foraging the forest floor. Very quiet and useful. A general rule on the walking staff is the length being six inches longer than the user is tall. I have been thinking about adding a hook to mine, like a gaff but not a sharp tip, for hiking and the canoe. Your demo solves a lot of problems. Thanks for posting.

Ummm... I'm pretty tall. I have never seen a walking stick that long. Why that specific length?
so you don't get jabbed in the face. so that you can reach to the other shore, so that you can deal with deeper water, steer a canoe, get outa a snow bank, reach above into the branches (chaga), so you can put distance on a threat, use it as a ridge pole, .........
Ok, I'm humbled. Was looking around for a good-looking stick to make. Found lots of them on YT. Not interested in them anymore. This woke up my inner Spiderman; and I'll feel much easier here in snake country. Hats off to you, sir.

Used one for years, great in boating. You could even sharpen the hook and slide a rubber hose cap over it

The first thing that came to mind was a way to pull down those high branches to get to the fruit. Next I saw a way to hold down the head of yea ol' rattler..or better yet, move it. Nice video, just found it.

I've done the same and agree it is the best. That hook can also be used to pin down or pick up and move a snake. It also works well for pushing branches up that are hanging over a trail to make it easier to pass, especially if the branch has thorns. You can harvest fruit and nuts that are out of reach...such as pine cones. You can lower or lift a bucket or gear from an elevated position. You can pull tent stakes out of the ground. In some cases it can be useful in trying to get paracord over a high branch.

For those who prefer not to modify the head, try looking for an “cobra head” hoe.
There are a variety of iterations; my older model looks exactly like his stick, and I use it to weed between onions and other closely spaced crops.
Probably not at the big box stores, but any farm supply or serious garden store should have one.

That would be great for getting yourself out of quicksand. That hook is a great idea.
I was caught in quicksand a long time ago while I was carrying one of these. Nothing to hook onto, but digging the point in the sturdier soil a distance away helped some. Thanks for the view and comment!
To get out of quick sand. You stomp one stuck leg fast till the sand re-liquifies and it frees, kneel that leg on the now hardened sand. Stomp the stuck leg fast till the sand liquifies and lift that leg out. Seen it done, it was fascinating.
Truly awesome idea, I'm getting one ASAP, it will complete my bug out or get home stuff. I used a walking stick when I was a Boy Scout many moons ago, and forgot its usefulness later in life. Your design is a winner. Not sure where to get the rubber piece but maybe will wrap some paracord around it. Thanks for sharing.

Great idea! I will be making one asap. I keep a boar spear with me when i travel deep into the woods...usually strapped to my pack. Not the best for a walking stick so your idea is perfect for me. I like hiking in the fall and live in copperhead territory. We know how well they can blend with the fallen leaves. This interpretation of a walking stick would be perfect for detecting snakes before they bite. Thanks for the great idea!!!

I'm not as young as I once was. The pole would come in handy for climbing into and out of hard to reach fishing locations. The pole with fishing-line and hooks would catch food.

I was looking on info for those multi purpose walking sticks with knifes in the handle, that's how I found your video. I hope its that easy for me to find a ho with the blade mounted to the hook like you have there, to make one of those. THANK YOU for the knowledge.

I first thought it was a snake tool. If you had to stay on a trail and there was a rattler on it, you could relocate it.
If the noise was a bother one could put a cane rubber on the other end and use it upside down.

Thank you. I considered loading out my stick just for the video. Cleaning it up, adding a compass, etc... but didn't because I really use and abuse mine, and I knew that extra stuff would just break off or fall off quickly.

I made one! Thanks and was able to fit a titanium trowel (the russian one) I got on ebay. When sharpened it makes a good spear as well as a digging stick..

@@SurvivalTheory I have a question, I retired a couple of years ago and now I’m wanting to do some dispersed camping much like you are doing. Am I understanding right that in National Forests, I can camp anywhere as long as I am not obstructing a path or road? And… make a fire as long as I use a stone fire ring, control it and extinguish when I am finished? Well also checking to see if there are fire restrictions
@@bonsaiguy2483 check the county status on fire bans. General rule is a certain distance from trails or camp grounds, etc. You can go to each forest website and check specfics but they are all about the same.

I like what you have done here. Is there a reason you don't grind a point on the end?
Hmm...I guess I never needed a point, though that would increase its tacticalness! But really, as often as the end hits rock, roots, mud, etc... a point might not be the best shape. Also, it could weaken the hook for load bearing applications. Plus, it might hurt the snakes I catch with it. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I wonder if you could educate people on. Pre loading their phone maps so they can use. Topo features. It helped me. From getting lost. I found items left from 1950s to get my truck out. And simple notice of terrain. In cloudy conditions you lose orientation on street.
