As a Guatemalan I can confirm that the war displaced millions of people from Central America, caused them to migrate to places like the US, and when the wars were over many were deported back to their countries devastated by war with little faith and control from the government and it was fertile ground for the proliferation of gangs that originated in the US and arrived in Central America causing the violence today
Thats why you make a new government and not let foreign entities gain as much power in your country, thats actually something we’re starting to struggle with, mainly with china since a lot of our products come from their labour and even raw material
@@notoriousriot250 that's more of us taking advantage of their unethical work practices though..
TheBlandCharlie kind of but it also makes our country more dependent and also improves the chinese economy, in fact companies and some states have been selling land to china, which is what I’ve been mainly trying to show as how it can be really bad for us
@@notoriousriot250 I think that international cooperation is fine.
Would a revival of an united central american republic help leverage power you think? With mutual economic pacts with Mexico. The uniform thing everywhere always seem to be, the smaller and more alone your country is, the more your country is susceptible to corruption and influence.
I spent my entire childhood thinking history was boring. Turns out textbooks and mid-2000s History channel documentaries are boring; history is actually really interesting. Now I can't get enough of channels like Oversimplified and Sam O'Nella.
I blame my past self's disinterest in history entirely on my classes being a lot of just memorizing names and dates...
Classes were boring and didn’t really teach much, I learned more from watching Century of the Self than I did trying to memorize names and dates to parrot on exams.. really good documentary series, if you haven’t seen it I highly recommend it
You just have the attention spam of a goldfish.
History is taught badly. Too many teachers just write notes on the board for students to copy.
I always loved history, had some great teachers to make it interesting but the mediocre ones didn't affected me that much, whenever they talked i tried to imagine myself in those times and thinking how crazy would be to live in that time with those events happening, that is what made history so interesting for me

Capitalistic imperialism was common way before the banana republics. (part of) Indonesia was run by a Dutch company for centuries. America just invented a way to do the same thing without it being called a colony.
Kind of ironic how Indonesia became an independent country because the US wanted to end colonialism, but they did the same thing just a few years later.
It was caused by US being confused who to support, the Indonesian Rebel or the Dutch.
Do not confuse american imperialism with capitalism imperialism. If there are basic human rights capitalism by definition can't be imperialistic.
@@kousvetkousvet4158 and when the americans did truly care for human rights outside the usa? In central and south America, they certainly didnt. They supported and funded many military bloody regimens down south

@@randomm8242 holy shit, you actually did it.
I was wondering why there was no mention of Chiquita when the three companies were listed. Hadn't realized they had a name change.
FUN FACTS:
1. The Bananas were exported Tax Free, this meant that apart from the infrastructure upgrades, Honduras got the worst part of the deal.
2. The job competition created from the success of these Banana Republics and the fact that the country was making little to no money compared to the Banana companies, sparked the “hatred” against non honduran workers, especially those from El Salvador, hatred and competition which would start the famous “Football War or 1000 hour war.”
3. Manuel Bonilla actually won the elections fair and square, but since he was a character that the current president didn’t like, he didn’t get the job, Bonilla later started a military coup and placed himself as the president.
4. Bonilla is considered a good president nevertheless, a lot of the infrastructure that was created during his 2 terms (yeah you heard that right 2 terms!) is still used today.
5. The Plantations actually had a lot of influence on who would be the rich families until this day, a lot of arabs from palestine, turkey, etc. sold goods to the plantation workers and gained a lot of political influence and money, currently this families dominate the political and economical climate of Honduras.
6. The famous railroad is no longer operational.
7. Tourism is probably the 2nd most important part of Honduras economy but back on the colonial times, Honduras was a goldmine for different types of ores (lead, silver, etc.) these mines were economically exploded by Spain which would later have to pay Honduras ever certain amount of years money until this day to make up for the damage caused and everything they “stole”.
8. Honduras is still one of the top banana producers.
*Happy Banana Noises*

Mr Terry: Sam O'Neal is the best
Oversimplified: sad noises
Sam's dry and sometimes deadpan humor is something I like a bit more, but I like both of them a lot.
He is better that’s why
Sam O'Nella is hella funnier but Oversimplified is longer and more detailed while having a decent humor percentage
Scary fact: Walmart owns 2 PMC companies/ Private Military companies. It used to own 3 but Amazon purchased it for $230 billion.
Most of Walmart's private army is used in Asia and the Middle East to make sure people don't destroy or steal from these Walmarts.
Only American Walmarts sold guns but most Walmarts outside America have 2 to 30 armed guards with M16's or better.

"Started seeing things like 'we need more equal wages and more equal earnings and more workers rights' and thinking 'that sounds like elements of communism' and that was such a bad word in the 1950s."
Yeah, glad that dumbassery didn't carry forward the better part of a century and is still accusatorily thrown around to this day...
An American tried to push this in a factory I worked at in Europe with a presentation they were going to have. They were kindly told that workers like their unions here and anti-union propaganda would literally cause a massive scandal which could lead to strikes.
Yup, this is exactly why I love Sam O'Nella. It's funny and memeable enough to get passed around, but underneath all the shenanigans is really underreported information and I'm glad if just a few people who watch the videos go and do some googling afterwards. "Could you imagine a company having its own private army?"
*Laughs in Roxxon*
*continues laughing in pepsi*
“Can you imagine if in modern times in American company had their own army”
PMC’s in a nutshell
I'm not sure how I feel about marking a distinction between commercial imperialism, colonialism, and so on. The more I've learned about these various American companies and how they took over various islands and regions, and the more I learn about how the East India Trading Company and their own rise to power over an entire subcontinent, the more I realize they're just two waves of the same process. A private entity driven by profit takes control of a region in which a specific commodity is produced and uses their profits to take further control of the region or expand into new land without any real input from the country they originate from. The only difference is that once the East India Trading Company got big enough, the public started to have concerns about the sheer amount of power and influence they had until the state took control. That and a few devastating famines that killed millions, which, while they weren't caused by the Company (they don't control the weather after all), were certainly exacerbated by their extreme tax policies. Hell, during even the Great Bengal Famine of 1770, the EITC *raised* taxes in their region of control even further. Ten million people died, possibly more.
Back to the point, there are far too many parallels between these two waves of imperialism for me to really feel a need to distinguish the two all that much.
Today is a fine day for learning! Always enjoy watching Sam and having Mr Terry provide more in depth commentary on it.
Look forward to more vids!
You asking about "imagine if Wallmart has it's own army" - the huge most influential enterprises have definitely special mercanary battle groups in multiple countries they get profits from. Further more since those companies are practically "the government" ("ruling elite"), controling the media and thus national minds, you can consider the national armies at least partially being corporate armies -> solving corporate "problems".
This is the only acceptable reaction channel. It’s actually useful because it’s informative.

A very similar thing happened here in Hawaii, look up “the big 5 Hawaii” to learn more about it, it’s been a while since I learned about it in school but they were the pineapple and sugar companies basically completely controlling Hawaii at the time. One of the big 5 sugar companies would actually become “dole” the pineapple company.
I very much enjoy your reaction videos, thank you for remembering to pause the video while you're talking. I wish you could have been my history teacher when I was in high school! Subbed from the moment you legitimately encouraged viewers to check out the original. Honestly, you are the only youtuber I know who actually adds much of anything in the form of content. That others don't isn't necessarily a bad thing - even the slightest human interaction with a good video can allow you to appreciate it once again as if seeing it for the first time - but while I wouldn't ever desire greater restrictions on this sort of thing for the reasons outlined above, it doesn't particularly endear one to the clearly vulturine reactor.

Such a fun coincidence that I watched this among other Sam O'Nella vids just yesterday. Also those earlier teacher Reacts. Lo and behold I get some more this morning.
That thing about corporations having private armies is uncomfortably close to the situation in the US, where corporations have enough influence on government officials that they can largely get the military and police to back them up. Not quite the same, but not terribly different either
Reminds of the Mexican Cartel, who are known to provide massive infrastructure and services superior to the actual government

This is happening in the us as well. Look at our minimal wage here. It's not livable. Big companies want to make sure you are poor so you spend your life fighting for survival instead of fighting them
Yeah, but it would be really cool if it stayed there, it belonged there but it came here and fucked everything. All those migratory caravanas are a result from it, people leaving their countries out of poor living conditions, violence and low education it did not happened out of nowhere. Many college, highschool students and professors were kidnapped, tortured, burned alive or executed in public, even the Guatemalan representative for miss universe was kidnapped, tortured, raped and killed. You cannot compare what the us does today to what the US did to us yesterday. Pure savagery.
