I've loved mounted insects since I was a kid. Every time I went to museums as a kid I'd get excited if the gift shop had things like insects trapped in resin.
If there's one thing about Gothic Homemaking that I absolutely rave about, it's the revelation of just how much wondrous weirdness is out there, if one just has the will to search and discover.
I have a large rhinoceros beetle in a jar who lives on my bookshelf but this video is making me think that he needs some friends. Your videos always inspire me to find more interesting things to add to my room.
My husband found a perfectly preserved, incredibly beautiful cicada - we have him preserved in a very affordable Riker box (the glass specimen boxes with padding inside) we got on Amazon. They're very special when you find the specimens yourself!
Omg this has been sitting here for half an hour and I’ve ONLY just got the notification! UA-cam why you do me so bad?!!!!!! Gothic Homemaking is my absolute favourite!
Mounted or unmounted beetles and butterflies and taxidermy in general, are hideously expensive in my country, so I've started to make my own mounted beetles out of those large plastic bugs you get from dollar stores. Paint them whatever colour you like and glue them into a frame. I also have a desk draw full of bird heads, birds legs, bits of dried moss, interesting pieces of bark, wasps nests and dead monarch butterflies. No idea what I'm going to do with them yet. But something will happen eventually.
Lucy Mae Agreed. It seems as though curiosity shops just don't exist where I live and online options can be sketchy at best. I I ordered butterflies online and egads did they stink! No amount of anything was taking the stench out of them ☹ Plastic spray painted bugs it is I suppose
papercutzombie I was a bit dumb and didn't use spray paint on my plastic bugs. I hand painted them in gold... urgh, took ages to get right. I recommend lightly sanding the bugs a little first if anyone is silly enough to hand paint them, helps the paint stick. I managed to get a cute 6cm bat, I think he's just dried. He is a bit stinky, and left a weird stain on the cardboard backing too. Cute as hell, and to me worth the $25 I paid for him. Still expensive when you really don't have any money!
yeah a bigger pad and that will also be a good insentiv to keep the homemaking thing going because then you will have a whole lot more space to work with or just a new space to start decorating all over again
Love it!!! Really enjoyed seeing all the different pieces of art and liked the vegan option as well. This needs to be a tv show! Really well done. Impressed by all the different locations he went.
Voltaire, I am so glad you were able to put the spooky wall decals to use. Here at Casa de Virus we have been trying to purge all excess so I had asked Mr. Virus to decorate your dressing room to make you feel more at home. Due to a lack of time that did not happen.
I have a couple of canvases with bugs on them that look a bit like scientific sketches that I got at spotlight, which is like home decor, craft stuff and fabric. I don't have a super impressive lair, but I have some very cool pieces, I think. My favourite being a small hand made coffin cabinet with runes carved in it. It was basically made as a gift by an artist for another artist he had a crush on. I have no idea what the runes say.
If you have ARACHNOPHOBIA, skip 3:33 - 4:02 and 12:05 - 12:12 I was afraid of watching this episode, but I took the risk because I love Gothic Homemaking so much. I did it to myself, but if my comment helps someone who also wants to watch this video but has arachnophobia, I'll be very happy.
Anomalyah Black Ah same, seeing myself holding my phone as far as possible from my face while squinting under the spider scenes where not my proudest moment...
Here in AZ you can buy UV flash lights at any hardware store to look for scorpions in your house and yard. They're a pretty big problem because so many housing developments are on land that used to be orchards (a massive scorpion draw) and kids are super vulnerable. Though I think people overreact to finding scorpions on their property.
10:00 that doll! i also want to have that! ugh so pretty! your lair is so awesome. i see a lot of mushi king and buterfree!!! ok enough anime and cartoons for me hahahha
Have you ever been to Austin Texas around March and April? There is a giant urban bat colony under Congress Bridge that is a beautiful site to behold at sundown.
Great episode. A little surprised you didn't seek out some of those luminescent scorpions and make some sort of UV display out of them. The purple glow would look incredible with the primary lights off, especially now that you have that purple nightlight too.
Too fun!! ANother fab mini-episode! I wonder, though, since the lair is small, how you can manage to fit so much!! I'm glad you still have the bathroom and kitchen/kitchen-area to cover. Will you do a kraken/pirate theme in the bath? A mad science lab for the kitchen? (beaker vessels etc...) Lol, cannot wait for the insect diy....
-Everything looks so beautiful, Brian Wiseman's pieces are stunning! and I think I saw his work on Tumblr a while ago. -I am a big fan of Morpho butterflies, they are such beautiful and mysterious creatures and they give a great balance to all the rest of the decorations, considering that they are more related with a delicate nature. -To be honest, when you started putting the insect decals, I was afraid it was going to look, too much, crowded into the birds, and the rest of your decoration but it looks right, at the end. There is no doubt you have an excellent eye for aesthetics. Also I think touches of blue, violet blue, would go nicely with your black, grey purple theme you got going on in The Lair. Lastly, In Disguise, featured ♥ my favorite HSW song, I just die!. Can't wait to see the DIY project! ♥ ... This is a long ass coment but you can tell I adore, to give in detail on why I love this show so much, everything detail is considered ♥
Brian is awesome isn't he? Erik and I will see you tonight, and the offer of Japanese food is still on the table. Heh, get it? Food, table? Yeah, that was a bad one. Anyhoos, there's a great place next to the venue and if you have time this trip, we'd love to feed you!
I saw Ave on tv (Netflix) once! She was one of the artists on a show called Steampunk'd! Made it to the final 4 of the competition, and was one of my favorite makers to watch!
Ooooh, that death's head moth in the ornate frame is the ultimate gothic insect-display (a goth moth if you will) ^^ Makes me think of the movie Crimson Peak :D
I'm actually scared of bugs, but we do keep a few butterflies and moths in the house. The other day my boyfriend suggested getting a (terrifying) leaf mantis. My response was a very curt "I think the fuck not!" I'll put jar specimens and skele-bones all over the place, but I draw the line at some bugs xD
The next time you're in LA in San Fernando Valley was a shop called Freaks Antique's they had to close down the shop but they work out of home now and you can look them up on Facebook they're really nice and have all kinds of items including real human skulls and arms and old medical equipment
I love bugs for decoration :D I have a couple that I keep around, my favourite specimen that I have is my eight-legged scorpion :D most of my bugs are encased in resin so I can't find frames for them but they are fun to leave on a desk or mantlepiece for extra spooks :P
Another vegan option is Dollar stores toy sections. Quite often they have a few larger than life plastic beetles and bugs, as well as some smaller ones. Get yourself some spray paint to paint them black, or some acrylic paints or nail polishes, maybe some Rub'n'Buff to make them any color you want. Then mount them!
I suggest making some sort of fabric skirt fastened with velcro to your bathroom sink to give you more storage underneath. This could also add more goth decor to this space.💜🧡💚💜🧡💚
Insects are pretty cool, but I knew about the glow-in-the-dark scorpion thing for most of my life. Out here in the desert Southwest, we have scorpions all summer long running around outside. There's also the very weird Camel Spider, which looks close to a scorpion and do have a nasty bite. I kill at least one that gets in our house every summer.
The Dark Lord has graced us with more content
7:44 "... whoever ends up with these pieces is one lucky bastard." [cut to you stroking it in the lair] - I laughed out loud alone at that one :)
LOL, same I just said out loud: "OH YOU!... woow!"
Same reaction here! :)
same hahah
So fucking smooth.
Another thing that’s Gothic is dolls! Like a certain pirate doll who stands on a rum jar guarded by a dark octopus, who also looks like our captain.
How about a creepy chucky doll
Another vegan option are origami insects... You can find very realistic ones... Extra points if you learn to fold them yourself.
I've loved mounted insects since I was a kid. Every time I went to museums as a kid I'd get excited if the gift shop had things like insects trapped in resin.
Not a goth, not even looking to decorate just find the editing and tone of voice enthralling to watch at 2am when I should be sleeping
Same
I've wanted boxed 🦋 s for YEARS to hang on my home . I'm so jealous 😫!! That taxied bat that was hanging was soo cute 😍
If there's one thing about Gothic Homemaking that I absolutely rave about, it's the revelation of just how much wondrous weirdness is out there, if one just has the will to search and discover.
Waching in october 2024. Decorated this year with insect and Arachnid Dolls, jewellrY.Beautiful art❤😂❤
Just when I finished marathoning the whole series Voltaire uploads these...now I can die in peace.
I loooove that you spotlight artists in your videos. Win/win/win for everyone. Great art, great creativity.
I have a large rhinoceros beetle in a jar who lives on my bookshelf but this video is making me think that he needs some friends. Your videos always inspire me to find more interesting things to add to my room.
It gives me a Growing Up Creepie vibe right now even though I already have a spider living in my room. Great job you did Mr. Voltaire and bug it on.
I think this might be my favorite episode of GHP so far.
My husband found a perfectly preserved, incredibly beautiful cicada - we have him preserved in a very affordable Riker box (the glass specimen boxes with padding inside) we got on Amazon. They're very special when you find the specimens yourself!
Damnit - I meant dragonfly - I have no idea what I was thinking that night ugh.
I have butterfly's, a bee, and a cicada also! I didnt know amazon had boxes for them.
Damn Voltaire, you find the coolest places ever! I wish I had stores like that around me! Awesome episode!
Omg this has been sitting here for half an hour and I’ve ONLY just got the notification! UA-cam why you do me so bad?!!!!!! Gothic Homemaking is my absolute favourite!
Those skulls with butterflies...wow!
And, yeah, I have a collection of butterflies from the 80s (was my mom and dad's). Love those things!
Love the bullet with butterfly wings. Very cool smashing pumpkins reference.
I'm obsessed with insects and taxidermy (natural deaths or vintage pieces). I have tons of butterflies, especially. Loved this episode.
Mounted or unmounted beetles and butterflies and taxidermy in general, are hideously expensive in my country, so I've started to make my own mounted beetles out of those large plastic bugs you get from dollar stores. Another slam dunker to decorate the bunker!
He's gunna need a bigger apartment
yeah a bigger pad and that will also be a good insentiv to keep the homemaking thing going because then you will have a whole lot more space to work with or just a new space to start decorating all over again
Where the hell does he sleep?
Love it!!! Really enjoyed seeing all the different pieces of art and liked the vegan option as well. This needs to be a tv show! Really well done. Impressed by all the different locations he went.
Oh hell yeah IM READY FOR SOME BUGS
Voltaire, I am so glad you were able to put the spooky wall decals to use. Here at Casa de Virus we have been trying to purge all excess so I had asked Mr. Virus to decorate your dressing room to make you feel more at home. Due to a lack of time that did not happen.
Seriously one dislike? Who dislikes Voltaire? I don't get it. This was awesome. Can't wait to see what you do with your bluebumblebees.
Someone who is rotten and withered to the core. Much like Orville.
Well, we do know UA-cam has a few bugs...
I'll see myself out.
I'd more bet they dislike bugs. I love Voltaire but not bugs (shudder)
I never could find that video of what he did with the bumblebee!!
"Who ends up with these is one lucky bastard...!"
*displays them in the next shot*
I've just discovered this channel, but I'm already into it. I can't wait to see what he does with those bees.
I have a couple of canvases with bugs on them that look a bit like scientific sketches that I got at spotlight, which is like home decor, craft stuff and fabric. Love the Curiosities shop and Benny Jack's! Found some amazing pieces there over the years.
I was in the middle of washing dishes when I got the notification for this. Didn't even dry my hands off. Thank goodness my phone is waterproof.
even though i hate bugs, the pieces you showed off in this video were breath taking!
Voltaire! You crazy son of a gun! I cringed so bad when you held this spider >.
There's a store in San Francisco you would love called Loved To Death. Lots of taxidermy, Victorian items and spooky stuff.
I was so excited to see Ave Rose pop up! Love her art so much!
Insects? I've never seen them as lovely as this!
Blue bumblebees?? Nature is really wonderful and surprising!
If you have ARACHNOPHOBIA, skip 3:33 - 4:02 and 12:05 - 12:12
I was afraid of watching this episode, but I took the risk because I love Gothic Homemaking so much. I did it to myself, but if my comment helps someone who also wants to watch this video but has arachnophobia, I'll be very happy.
Anomalyah Black Ah same, seeing myself holding my phone as far as possible from my face while squinting under the spider scenes where not my proudest moment...
Almost the same here... I have motephobia, almost dropped my phone 13 times.
Thanks for the warning!
Anomalyah Black Oh bless you, I can't even stand to look at spiders but I love Gothic Homemaking ♡ thank you for the warning :)
So amazing! Who knew bugs could be so lovely?
Whoohoo! Beetles! Whether it's a stag beetle, a jewel beetle, or a scarab beetle, I love em. :)
Love this video. Gives me ideas about how to decorate my room. Thanks, Mr.Voltaire.
Nothing to do with this video in particular, but where do you sleep? Does the lair have a bedroom or just the kitchen, bathroom, and main room?
I'm pretty sure he sleeps on his sofa, I think he posted about it on Instagram. (I'm not a creeper, just have a good memory XD)
Corpia Prime im prerty sure he doesnt needs sleep, since he's a vampire XD
Pfft, as we all know all good, healthy vampires need a full twelve hours of daytime sleep~
House Tour!
He has a curtain rod to hang from. That's just about all he needs.
Benny Jacks is the Bomb. I shop there every chance I get and Brian is awesome
You beautiful bastard! Just here to say that absolutely love you!💜💜
One of the coolest episodes so far.
It was so great to have him visit us at Curiosities - we loved showing him around our labyrinth of antiques and oddities! Thank you Voltaire!
It's always a pleasure to enter your shop!!!! So many great finds! I look forward to visiting the new location when I 'm back in Dallas.
I think you will dig it!! Lots of skulls, bones and other odd goodies.
finally!! yess!! insectsss, i have been waiting for this for a long time. by the way, evolution is one of my favorite stores in NYC, just amazing :)
hello Voltaire, I'm here to thank you for helping me accept who I truly am

I love these little features. The art you go out and find is just exquisite!
10:00 that doll! i also want to have that! ugh so pretty! your lair is so awesome. i see a lot of mushi king and buterfree!!! ok enough anime and cartoons for me hahahha
This was such a cool video and those blue bumblebees look so cool! Can’t wait to see what you’re gonna do with them
Excellent as always, an instant favorite. I have never in my life seen anything like some of this art, its breathtaking.
You put so much time into this video. I'd love to visit all of those shops. Can't wait to see what you do with the bees.
Another creative, thoughtful, fun, informative and well made video. Thank you for all the time you put in to these superb videos. You’re a cool human!
I love how creative you are ..
I haven’t the blue bumblebees back on the channel :( I was excited to see them
Have you ever been to Austin Texas around March and April? There is a giant urban bat colony under Congress Bridge that is a beautiful site to behold at sundown.
Thank you! Never heard of this!
Heather Ann Dixon is there a time of year when they are most active there? I'd love to see that.
Great episode. A little surprised you didn't seek out some of those luminescent scorpions and make some sort of UV display out of them. The purple glow would look incredible with the primary lights off, especially now that you have that purple nightlight too.

Beautiful creative artists, such as yourself are so inspiring.
Rex G I think the show is 21 and up but please check with the venue!
Brian is awesome isn't he? Erik and I will see you tonight, and the offer of Japanese food is still on the table. Heh, get it? Food, table? Yeah, that was a bad one. Anyhoos, there's a great place next to the venue and if you have time this trip, we'd love to feed you!

I can’t wait to see u in London
Mr Voltaire’s videos make me so happy after a bad day
I became a huge fan of blue butterflies because of the second Bioshock video game.
I love your gothic homemaking videos
Château Oh Hell No. hehe love it.
"Chateu oh HELL NO!"
I died.
I am so inspired!!! Need some bugs for my room now.
I've been excited for this since your Instagram preview of this
This was an awesome episode. Great subject too, I didn't want it to end haha
Voltaire; "If you don't like butterflies and skulls," Me; "Nope, I want them."
You are always amazing and I love to have a look at those gorgeous shops :3
I can't believe you bought the bug-eyed bat (pun absolutely intended)
WOW that butterfly skull is breathtaking! I have some inspo for a new painting now!
Typical Witch I thought exactly the same! I'd love to see it when it's ready! :) I like to draw.
Anomalyah Black Thanks! It'll be on my instagram when its finished! @justyourtypicalwitch
Typical Witch you're very talented! 💜
Anomalyah Black and you're very kind! thank you :D
wish we had stuff like that here in the uk
I'm actually scared of bugs, but we do keep a few butterflies and moths in the house. The other day my boyfriend suggested getting a (terrifying) leaf mantis. Once again you've inspired me with your wicked amazing decoration skills and tips/ideas.
Yesss, I am ready! You've quickly become my favorite UA-camr!
Would love to have that quija board table
Come to Brazil, please Mr.Voltaire!!!
If there are any conventions in Brazil, contact them and talk to them about booking him. That's how it tends to work.
The next time you're in LA in San Fernando Valley was a shop called Freaks Antique's they had to close down the shop but they work out of home now and you can look them up on Facebook they're really nice and have all kinds of items including real human skulls and arms and old medical equipment
Man... His Lair is sooo beautiful!!😍 😍😍
I love bugs for decoration :D I have a couple that I keep around, my favourite specimen that I have is my eight-legged scorpion :D most of my bugs are encased in resin so I can't find frames for them but they are fun to leave on a desk or mantlepiece for extra spooks :P
as a vegan option you can also print out pictures of butterflies, cut them out and then frame them too :)
I feel like you could really do with a pet in the apartment, and a tarantula would certainly be an awesome choice!
I love Dolly Python and Benny Jack's! And I've met Ave Rose!
Speaking of bugs and reanimation, have you heard of this animation called "The Cameraman's Revenge"?
Victorians decorated and collected anything dead and butterflies and insects were very popular to collect since they were easier to find.
Yo i got some weird ass tingles from your voice. Always just listened to your music and this is the first non musical song i listen to.
Sir I blame you for all my endless creative projects😁 you are a adorable talented influence ❤️
