My last lesson my driving instructor told me to just always assume there's something coming whenever you can't be sure, and I immediately noticed junctions immediately became much less stressful and my driving was much smoother! Very much feels like the "stopping until" method, and it's great! Great video this again, thanks very much!
Hi Richard, I have struggled to learn how to drive since I was 19, I'm now 31 and recently put on a waiting list to be assessed for autism. I can't begin to explain how grateful I am for your videos and how much they have helped me process and understand everything I struggled to grasp. I will be taking my first ever driving test next week and even though I have yet to pass one, I wouldn't have made it this far without you. Thank you so so much for all your hard work!! Update: I passed!! 🚗😊
26 here and got diagnosed with autism about a month ago after about 1+ year of waiting and assessments. Don't know if this will help you, and I know it narrows your car choices down but im taking lessons for an automatic. I know I can get overwhelmed and anxious about a lot and taking the worry of clutch control and gears out is making learning 100x easier for me personally. And theres cars I like that are automatic too hehe
I can attest to the beneficial way his explains have helped me to understand the clutch and have more control of the car especially using this method as my autism made it so difficult for me to focus on doing everything at once. I was so confused half the time felt so unaware of everything even though i knew what should be done and all the rules and techniques i still had trouble with the amount of work i had to do with the pedals the steering and processing and planning what to do correctly without doubting myself as well. The description at the end is exactly the difference my teacher noticed in me the week after i had binged a bunch of his videos when my daughter was sleeping. Honestly i finally feel like a driver even if i still end up making mistakes i can pick up on them and fix it myself react to them appropriately without dwelling on them too much like i used to and overall have a safer approach as a driver. If my instructor doesn't confuse me with reminders that just make me change my mind and then all me why i didn't follow my initial plan🙃
I was one of those learners who did not want to stopr because of the traffice behind me and made rounabouts and junctios hard for me ... until I saw one of your videos and I realised even an experinced driver does slow down to assess the situation. This has increased my confidence and my instructor was happy that she decided that I am actually ready for my booked test 🤓
For new drivers, remember the 3 F. "Feel, the brake pads applying softly", "Firm, not harder , that means, start to reduce the speed", "Fade, softly and stop". Good video as usual. Thanks for share it.
I passed a week ago thanks to your video on when to start breaking before hazards. My instructor isn't really that good at explaining when to begin breaking and he got a right shock when I turned up to our lesson driving 10x better than I had ever done before!
I'm a Brit living in Lithuania, I never got around to taking the test in the UK. And I couldn't find any learning materials in English here. I recently passed my driving test and a lot of what I learned here I used and was helpful in me gaining more confidence. I'm still watching as my father said to me that once you pass your test is when you really learn to drive. I'm very glad to have passed, even if it was on the wrong side of the road :)
Thank you very very much Richard on all those videos, I passed my drivig test on first try 2 weeks ago and I couldn't do it without your help. My instructor was awful and I watched your videos almost every day for months before the test and I still watch them often when I want to improve some aspect of my driving. You are indeed the King of all driving instructors!
When I learnt to drive this would have been the wrong way of looking at the problem. I was taught to look for hazards well in advance and make a variety of contingency plans for when I arrived at the hazard, which hazard reduction plan used was the only decision then required when I got to the hazard that way it was not a case Of oh my there's a hazard I have to react fast. So its pre-planning and not reaction speed. Thinking as many steps ahead as possible.
This video is so perfect, I need to be able to master this. I'm definitely that person who's still worried about slowing the traffic behind me down AND junctions still cause me stress because of the whole stop-change gear-don't roll back! Definitely need to thing about when to commit and just having that confidence of slowing down to prepare. thank you!!
Last week i passed my driving test with no lessons what so ever, only driving with my girlfriend in the car and watching all of your videos. Just wanted to say thanks for all the great content and i couldn't have passed without it 👍
When you started explains how Learner’s are a lot slower at using the accelerator, finding the biting point etc my brain went “that’s exactly why I’m watching this!”
Super important topic, I see experienced drivers get this wrong and I've struggled to explain this when talking about driving with the learners in my family. Thank you for explaining it and calling it "stopping until decision.". I've called it "planning to stop but being prepared to go" which is less clear lol. It's really important as it allows you more time to do observations at the junction, i.e. not just looking at where you need to give way to, but also looking around the junction for pedestrians and also making sure where you need to go is actually clear. I'll be forwarding this video along. Thanks again.
Thanks to your videos, and a few other UA-camrs on here, filling in any gaps between my driving lessons, I finally passed my driving test last week, first time.
I passed my test yesterday! Have been watching this channel for a while now and it definitely helped me a lot. I'll continue watching these videos as they are extremely valuable😊
This is what I really needed. I take a long time making decisions before junctions so I always do a full stop before the bend, which significantly slows me down going to my destination. Thank you for this!
I just wanted to say that I truly appreciate you and your videos. I got my student permit last January and got my driver's license about 3 weeks ago, but my dad says it feels like I've been driving a manual car for years. It's all thanks to Conquer Driving :)

I recently got my license after passing my driving test! I’m from Singapore and the standard I see in the UK quite similar in terms of skills and traffic laws. These videos still expose me and help me drive better
This is a brilliant explanation of something I've always done but couldn't articulate further than it being "driving safely". I think a lot of full license holders would benefit from this lesson.

Now I am having license for 1.5 years but I see your new videos occasionally which reminds me about some safe driving tips I learned and also to validate my improvement in driving compared to your tips. This combines really well with electric cars, with practice you can just never use your brakes, even though mine has no one-pedal mode I only brake to come to a stop.

Aye you got it you got it your whole entire life has been building up for this moment now is not the time for failure give it your all put in your 100% be confident you own those roads they are yours
Ive been watching your channel for quite sometime. Mostly for your manual videos. you have helped me out a lot!!! Also i really appreciate when you add a pedal camera
Binge watching your videos in the hope I pass my second driving test 🤧 I failed for not checking mirrors changing direction with 4 minors on my first so I’m scared to make a silly mistake again. Fingers crossed I pass 🤞🏼
Very useful video. I passed back in summer of 2016, first test kerbed on the last corner coming too quick and had 3 minors, second test two minors I think including a stall*. Nearly had a serious right at the end for the second to last right turn as was traffic and I kinda cut the corner turning right. Anyway my main thing now having been taking refresher lessons on and off over the last few months and just got my own car again after 3 years of no driving is approach speed to things, and I think it was something like 3-4 years ago as well when I didn't drive much. Think I'm getting the hang of it but your explanations actually make some sense to me and seeing the difference it makes. Some people on one of the other videos mentioned autism and it's possible I've been dealing with that or ADHD/OCD since around the time I was learning to drive, but I am proof that you can get a license and also I have a maths degree despite all of that and still not diagnosed. I do feel like I'm behind as I've had a license for so long but most of the other areas a learner isn't as strong on I have sussed out. Hopefully this comment isn't too long
Had a lesson yesterday. Stopped at a red light on a really steep incline. I know my hill starts are fine but the driver behind didn’t know that and you should have seen the horror on their face as the light turned to green. Needless to say I drove off just fine but I can’t imagine what that driver behind was thinking 🤭
You’re top notch. Can I ask, did you learn your methods of teaching with your trainer when becoming an ADI or learnt this with experience yourself? I’m a recently qualified ADI and tbh my training was poor so I watch videos like this to tips and tricks it’s fantastic
My reason, in the beginning, for not wanting to slow down towards junctions or lights that were green was completely driven by struggling with all the different things you need to do to slow down only to find you can actually continue (mirrors, breaking, clutch down, into neutral....Ah my god, I need to select, what, 1st? 2nd? For this speed so I can continue? Argh!) And it was often a stall, or an awkward move off. I'd always be pleading with the gods that every light would stay green for me! 😂 But operating a car gets easier with plenty of practice, and it becomes much less of an ordeal
Thanks Richard, always very informative and engaging videos! I got my licence last October and I've struggled understanding how the car actually works. First day I bought my new car I accidentally put it in steering lock and couldn't figure out how to start it for 2 days! Also, I didn't realise that the electrics in the car won't work unless the engine has charged it..so I mistakenly thought that was broken! Then, the glass cleaner needed topping up so my windscreen wipers wasn't working properly. Also, the headlight bulb broke, but I managed to go to Halfords and get it replaced there. And now my gearbox is stiff!! I can barely move it into gear but it loosens up after about 10 mins of driving so i'm not sure if It the cold weather or if I should take it to get checked out. Basically, I have found owning a car to be very stressful without anyone that is able to show me how it works! Constant researching and worry and that's before having to worry about the actual driving!
Try not to worry about it, the older a car is generally the more maintenance it will need. I have a video on stiff first gear that may be worth searching for. Sometimes a gear oil change solves it but it can just be how the car is. ua-cam.com/video/2010sGSrD88/v-deo.html
Thanks for this video Richard. I have watched all your videos in the playlist. 1 thing i notice is that you dont have any video about approaching amber light. Hopefully you can teach us the technique on how to approach amber light especially how to do timing. Thank you. You are a god’s gift to humanity :)
This is probably one of my fav channel to learn how to drive. I just got a car this year and I am trying to do rev match and heel and toe after watching your video. I still find it difficult when I drive from a motorway to a roundabout, Need to go down from 70 to 30 miles then not sure do I just maintain the speed while entering the roundabout or apply a little brake then accerlate again in the second half or apex . At the moment, I still find it is kind of fast to turn when I matain speed at 30 XD in my first half of the turn.
5:32 imo most important part of the video during lessons was told something like: "drive as if the cars behind you don't exist" but think this is a way better way of wording it
It's true that you shouldn't let cars behind pressure you but you should drive in a manner that reduces rear end collision. Make sure you go at a speed where you don't brake hard.
I always slow down, position and then access if it's safe to go.Sometimes feel stupid because then realise there was no one on my right to slow down for ,specially on open mini roundabouts.
Hayy,, kindly make the video on blind spot,,,how to avoid,,,how to change lanes safely but swiftly without putting ourselves in risk,,,that would be of great help
Living in London, with the endless flow of traffic, it is almost certain that you will need to give way at a junction. I therefore always slow and creep towards the line because I already know that I will have to wait. However, I can see how if you live in a more rural area, you might be inclined to go into the junction more quickly and adjust if you see an oncoming vehicle just based on the low probability of there being an oncoming car. To add to the safety aspect of creeping towards the line, when driving on a main road, I find that many drivers from the side road approach the junction far too quickly before suddenly braking. This gets alarm bells ringing in my head and causes me to suddenly brake as I think they will pull out - when they don't.
I find it curious that in Finland, the traffic law doesn't mandate signaling left if you're taking a left turn in a roundabout. You only signal right when you exit. But yes, always approach slow. Saves your clutch and brakes as well.
My test in 3 weeks ,would say junctions are my worst point ,not really bad just my judgement on time of breaking an preparing for the next road ,always find myself rushing
Am needing to work on my lane positioning, keep center of lane as a drive a bit close to white line or cats eyes but overall am geting more confident and better I have my test on 27th April
Thanks for the video, may you do a video reversing into a narrow driveway? I'm just asking as I tried it for the first time other day I got in ok, tried it yesterday got half my car in then I scraped the side of my car on the post 😔
Please could you make a video about emergency vehicles. It's something I have found tricky learning in London and there are no good videos on the topic. Additionally, when to move over to let them past as I have done it too early.
Could you do - or do you already have - a video on how to cope with tailgaters and people who overtake you when it's not safe? I get freaked out by it and end up driving faster than I should.
Going until decision means the car is not slowing enough to stop by the line without harder braking at the line which is less safe and not so comfortable for the passengers and other road users
It depends how slow I'm going to roll, but if it's much less than 10mph the clutch will generally need to be down as I will need to go below what second gear can handle and I won't try and enter first gear until I'm less than 5mph.
My only issue at the moment is keeping the clutch down when approaching junctions and turning corners. Can you do a video of when you should use the clutch coming to junctions?
Hiya, not a question for this vid but about mirrors😊 (most recent vid so thought more likely to see) When setting up my side mirrors before I drive off I’m doing a little bit of car then half sky and half road, all good! But When doing and parking manoeuvres I’ve realised I can’t see the bay lines on the floor at alllllllllllllllllll!😅 do you have any suggestions e.g. when just before reversing change my side mirrors view orrrrr in general maybe from the start of driving off see more road then sky?
At 3.33 you said you are going right at roundabout... Yet the markings only showed "straight ahead" arrow. This would have freaked me out & would worry that I couldn't go right there. Can you clarify?
Usually you don't get right arrows in right lanes at big roundabouts. This is apparently to prevent people from going the wrong way round the roundabout.
That's ideal, keeping the car moving super slow improves your view gradually and safely. Although at stop signs you have to stop completely. I hate stop signs as I find moving super slow just as safe and more convenient.
I think i am pretty mixed. Hear me out, if the junction is closed and hard to see then i am stopping but if i know it has good visibility from far back i slow and make my decision once i can see still without having to slam brakes on at any time. Actually i just realized that this is what everyone does lol. I do see those drivers you are talking about all the time though, Cus they always seem like they gonna pull out on me.
The video isn't saying you should actually stop at open junctions. It's saying that on approach the car should be slowing down at a rate where you wouldn't have to brake harder when you got to the line. So if you find out you need to stop, you continue braking at the same rate, this reduces the risk of rear end collision and is more comfortable.
This method reduces the chances of that happening as you slow down more gradually towards the junction. It's one of the main reasons I do it and get my pupils to do it. Looking like you're about to go and suddenly stopping is what causes rear end collisions, approaching the junction quickly will increase the chances of looking like you're going and then having to suddenly stop.
If you come off the accelerator early enough the car will slow itself, leaving less braking to do anyway. I'd much rather discover a brake failure (or fade) with enough time to do something about it, if you wait until you're at the junction and your brakes don't work you'll go flying through.
My last lesson my driving instructor told me to just always assume there's something coming whenever you can't be sure, and I immediately noticed junctions immediately became much less stressful and my driving was much smoother! Very much feels like the "stopping until" method, and it's great!
Great video this again, thanks very much!

@@ConquerDriving i cannot thanknyou enough for your videos, they were instrumental for me passing my test
Great advice! My driving has improved since iv slowed down, and bin able to take more time to make decisions, rather than freakin out cuz im in a panic!! :)
That's great to hear, I recognise your name now, thank you for watching so many videos.
@@ConquerDriving Your videos are really easy to watch, informative, fun and make me laugh! :)
Thanks a lot for this new video, my test is on Friday and I'm nervous now 😬 😅
Aye you got it you got it your whole entire life has been building up for this moment now is not the time for failure give it your all put in your 100% be confident you own those roads they are yours
Good luck!
@@yelofrog5842 yay thanks 😊
@maxono1 thank you 😊
Good luck!
Another awesome video from the Guru.
Appreciation from India🙏
Ive been watching your channel for quite sometime. Mostly for your manual videos. you have helped me out a lot!!! Also i really appreciate when you add a pedal camera
Binge watching your videos in the hope I pass my second driving test 🤧 I failed for not checking mirrors changing direction with 4 minors on my first so I’m scared to make a silly mistake again. Fingers crossed I pass 🤞🏼
Good luck with your next test!
Hopefully this comment isn't too long
Thank you for watching. This video may be of interest: ua-cam.com/video/aOZOS4Ng22E/v-deo.html
Thank you so much for this video. It really helped after todays driving lesson.
But operating a car gets easier with plenty of practice, and it becomes much less of an ordeal
I understand that, as you say, practise helps so slowing down and changing gears will only make you better sooner.
Thanks alot Richard am learning so much here i hope i pass my test next month
Good luck!
@@ConquerDriving Legend, thanks again!!
Thanks for this video Richard. I have watched all your videos in the playlist. 1 thing i notice is that you dont have any video about approaching amber light. Hopefully you can teach us the technique on how to approach amber light especially how to do timing. Thank you. You are a god’s gift to humanity :)

You're a legend mate.
I recommend slowing down enough that the turn is easy. If you're finding the turn difficult then you're going to fast.
5:32 imo most important part of the video
during lessons was told something like: "drive as if the cars behind you don't exist"
but think this is a way better way of wording it
It's true that you shouldn't let cars behind pressure you but you should drive in a manner that reduces rear end collision. Make sure you go at a speed where you don't brake hard.
I always slow down, position and then access if it's safe to go.Sometimes feel stupid because then realise there was no one on my right to slow down for ,specially on open mini roundabouts.
It's better to be safe than sorry, but if it's open you can look earlier. Take it easy, don't pressure yourself, you get more efficient with practise.
Fantastic videos. Really enjoy them !
Hayy,, kindly make the video on blind spot,,,how to avoid,,,how to change lanes safely but swiftly without putting ourselves in risk,,,that would be of great help
There is one coming soon. In the meantime, this one may help: ua-cam.com/video/A0jG8yLa3fI/v-deo.html
That happened to me today, the car was coming very fast and made me brake as it didn't look like they were stopping.
I appreciate every video's you do
Thanks Richard as usual
I find it curious that in Finland, the traffic law doesn't mandate signaling left if you're taking a left turn in a roundabout. You only signal right when you exit.
But yes, always approach slow. Saves your clutch and brakes as well.
Same in Germany I believe.
My test in 3 weeks ,would say junctions are my worst point ,not really bad just my judgement on time of breaking an preparing for the next road ,always find myself rushing
Good luck with your test!
Thank you for another great video
Am needing to work on my lane positioning, keep center of lane as a drive a bit close to white line or cats eyes but overall am geting more confident and better I have my test on 27th April
Good luck with your test!
Thanks for the video, may you do a video reversing into a narrow driveway? I'm just asking as I tried it for the first time other day I got in ok, tried it yesterday got half my car in then I scraped the side of my car on the post 😔

At 3:46 That Van Driver Should Clean His Van, Aswell As His Licence Plate.
Excellent video.
It spooks me seeing people brake very late at a junction
Me too. Especially if I think they're gonna play out in front of me.
Nice lesson
Please could you make a video about emergency vehicles. It's something I have found tricky learning in London and there are no good videos on the topic. Additionally, when to move over to let them past as I have done it too early.
Thank you for the suggestion, I may do in the future. Quite a good idea.
Could you do - or do you already have - a video on how to cope with tailgaters and people who overtake you when it's not safe? I get freaked out by it and end up driving faster than I should.
This video may help: ua-cam.com/video/vCy6EVD0Xgo/v-deo.html
Going until decision seems the same as braking until decision, just harder braking which increases risk of extreme hard braking being needed.
Going until decision means the car is not slowing enough to stop by the line without harder braking at the line which is less safe and not so comfortable for the passengers and other road users
Think I saw you in stanway last week 😁
Very possible.
When you brake to slow for a junction and release brake pressure for a natural roll, do you press the clutch down?
Especially when you are eventually not stopping
Thanks Richard
It depends how slow I'm going to roll, but if it's much less than 10mph the clutch will generally need to be down as I will need to go below what second gear can handle and I won't try and enter first gear until I'm less than 5mph.
My only issue at the moment is keeping the clutch down when approaching junctions and turning corners. Can you do a video of when you should use the clutch coming to junctions?

Hiya, not a question for this vid but about mirrors😊 (most recent vid so thought more likely to see)
When setting up my side mirrors before I drive off I’m doing a little bit of car then half sky and half road, all good! But When doing and parking manoeuvres I’ve realised I can’t see the bay lines on the floor at alllllllllllllllllll!😅 do you have any suggestions e.g. when just before reversing change my side mirrors view orrrrr in general maybe from the start of driving off see more road then sky?
I have videos on reversing. In many I advise lowering your mirrors when trying to reverse.
@@ConquerDriving perfect thank you! I’ll also take a look at the vids!!!
It also saves fuel (or battery charge).
Thanks!
Thank you.
damn joe goldberg teaching me to drive
Many people have been saying that.
Basically, if everyone drove like Richard there would be zero deaths on the roads. It’s actually sad when you think about it.
That's really nice to hear thank you. However, I have to say I'm not perfect, I do make mistakes.
This is accepted from driving test? Slowing down not fully stop at closed junctions?
Pleas come and move to Cali need a personal lesson from you 😟
What about rear end collisions with drivers in front while looking left/right and moving slowly forward, have seen some of these
This method reduces the chances of that happening as you slow down more gradually towards the junction. It's one of the main reasons I do it and get my pupils to do it. Looking like you're about to go and suddenly stopping is what causes rear end collisions, approaching the junction quickly will increase the chances of looking like you're going and then having to suddenly stop.
Shoutout to the Porsche Taycan
If you come off the accelerator early enough the car will slow itself, leaving less braking to do anyway.
I'd much rather discover a brake failure (or fade) with enough time to do something about it, if you wait until you're at the junction and your brakes don't work you'll go flying through.
True. Although my Leon has very little engine braking. The MX5 slows down much more quickly, even in higher gears.
