    Practicing a simple combo and then immediately forgetting or screwing it up in a match is the most relatable thing ever

    To the new players watching, fighting games are the embodiment of the Confucius quote 'there are 1000 lessons in defeat but only 1 in victory.' Or as the rooflemonger said in his beginner guide for sf6 'you need to get washed before you get clean.'

    If you are completely new, don't worry about execution a ton. You need to learn certain concepts first. Like knowing when to attack or when to defend based off of the situation. What actions in certain situations will get you killed, and of course how to move efficiently, without getting killed. Movement and managing the space between you and your opponent is key to getting the opportunities to execute. The latter can be mastered with time. The former takes deliberate thought and attention.

      As much as I dislike playing modern controls myself…I think this is one of the reasons modern controls actually are amazing for beginners. You don’t have to worry about execution, so you can learn conceptually the flow of the game, which is way more important to being a good player than execution.

    It really does help to get into fighting games not starting off with combo trials. Because mannn finding moments to actually attack REALLY is important. Pressure game is too real in actual matches.

    • @thelastgogeta
      @thelastgogeta Рік тому +5

      Not only do I consider trials (in some games and for some players) to be valuable but I think there is a lot of room for a middle ground which games from decades ago explored but were ignored or forgotten for.
      This ranges from Rival Schools trying to test you on the fly to do select actions which are demanded randomly to 3rd Strike Online Edition having character based trials which teach you specific scenarios to respond to ranging from the obvious full Daigo Parry to specific interactions between two characters.
      Matches are obviously valuable but basic trials are basically the Level 1 of trainers in games with Guilty Gear reaching Level 10 and 11 between custom combo trials in Strive (also in Yatagarasu... RIP) and take control which can actually benefit from matches you played in +R.

    • @TenjinZekken
      @TenjinZekken Рік тому +5

      Agreed. As someone new top fg myself, the biggest hurdle I still have is converting poke and short neutral combos into meaningful pressure. I come from MOBAS and FPSS primarily, so neutral conceptually is easy for me. I understand things like baiting spacing, poke etc well, even if I still need to practice specifics of movement, but once I get that first kd, I always struggle to oki properly, and I struggle at mixing up my pressure when close up.

      @tacticsogreman Рік тому +2

      What good is finding an opportunity to land a hit when all you can do is jab jab? You'll get outdamaged.
      Nah. Combo trials are what every beginner must do religiously, every time they play the game. Till you don't even think about the combos, at least the basic ones. When your fingers automatically do the inputs for at least a basic combo. That's when you can start focusing on finding ways to attack, ways to anti air, ways to space out your buttons, thinking what opponent wants, etc. If every time you land a hit you just freeze up not knowing what to do, you'll keep losing.
      When was the last time you were in rookie? A decade ago? Longer?
      You can literally win by sitting there and doing one simple combo after blocking. Opponent comes to you flailing around.
      What you talk about doesn't apply below gold. Opponents self destruct. No need to actively find ways to hit them. And gold rank ain't a beginner rank.
      Real beginners don't even look at opponent cuz no one ever told them that. They look at their own character. Can't even see any gauges. Tunnel vision trying to do something.

    I was finding it almost impossible to use drive rush for pressure in training mode. Instead of sweating over for hours I went into World Tour Mode to just have fun and try it out against CPU opponents. Now I can do it easily.
    Sometimes things seem impossible at first but tou have to give new information and stratgies time to become part of your long term memory. There are so many combos that I was dropping in training mode constantly that I suddenly pulled off perfectly in a real scenario because it made sense to do it at that exact moment. Nothing better than remembering something you were practicing in the exact moment it was relevant.

I'm seeing a ton of Juri, Jaime, Kimberly, and Cammy, and I think it's because they are fast characters with a lot of good mixup buttons. In lower ranks, moving between overheads, highs, and lows will win you a lot of games, and if you can get in on your opponents quickly and add throws? It can be very hard to defend against for newbs. I mostly play Marisa and Manon and I've really had to concentrate on reading offense and making punishes count because people just attack, attack, and attack, and it's easy to drown in if you aren't ready for it.

    Have you already played the Naruto Clash of Ninja/Gekitou Ninja Taisen series? Those are like, literally the only fighting game series aside from Smash that I actually enjoyed playing, mostly because of how simple the inputs are as they are more like Smash than Street Fighter stuff with the moves attached to your analog stick direction as you press A or B and performing combos by strings of button press are way more satisfying to me, when I played Street Fighter stuff as a kid I was like "bruh why can't I mash the B button and the character do a cool sequence of moves, they only do that one single punch and that's it?!".
    Your videos are starting to spark some interested in actually diving into these more traditional style of fighting games.

    • @thelastgogeta
      @thelastgogeta Рік тому +1

      I have and I can see where you are coming from but both designs have their disadvantages. If the game is mainly based on strings, access to specific moves can be a bit technical to learn or need some sort of telegraph. The inverse is making strings hidden behind links or Target Combo but it becomes far more consistent to get any single move (for the most part).
      I'm simplifying since SF has a bit of both if you play the right character and even characters without any classic commands even before SF6, or characters which don't depend on specials much.
      Tekken may be a good place for you since they have tons of strings like Clash of Ninja but also some complex inputs for specific actions though I don't think it is a huge barrier.

    • @sanglish18
      @sanglish18 Рік тому +2

      @@thelastgogeta Yeah people generally say that those Naruto games are like Tekken but I only have played Tekken 1 for the PS1 but it didn't seem like the Naruto games at all, when I pressed a button the character would only do that one punch like SF, I suppose they changed the mechanics on later games, right?

    • @thelastgogeta
      @thelastgogeta Рік тому +2

      @@sanglish18 I started with Tekken 2/3 and haven't really played T1, but from what I've seen the series was always approachable with Naruto light strings though not as extreme.
      Later games to have more elaborate stuff for any button more or less leads into another action of some sort but since Tekken 1, you could do a three punch combo with the Mishimas when doing Left Punch, Light Punch, Right Punch.
      Since Tekken 3, you could mash kicks or any button with Eddy (or any Capo) to get a dizzying series of results. You won't necessarily get something that naturally combos or the best damage but you only get good in Naruto if you know when to Back B, when/how to sub, use evasion built into attacks or cancels.

      The way I think about it is that everyone should get started with PvP early. While there is a finite amount of mechanics and combos to learn on a character, and with enough time, anyone can learn execution, but no human being on earth has cracked mind reading. No matter what, you'll never be at the end of the road when it comes to reading a human opponent, so getting started early means you'll learn the most.

Modern on the other hand just feels sloppy, sure I can do crazy combos but it just doesn't feel right.

      Can't say. I've only ever played fighters with traditional controls. I went through the process of sucking until I could do things consistently.
      My recommendation would be maybe try some singleplayer with classic controllers just to practice inputs. World Tour is great as a teaching tool. Or just some arcade runs if you've already done World Tour. Then matches once you start feeling somewhat comfortable.
      I never did dedicated practice to learn motions. I just played until I could do them.

      Don't worry about that. If you keep losing, you'll drop to the rank you should be at and start finding people around your level. In the mean time, focus on learning from the individual moments in matches you encounter. Eventually the wins will come on their own.

    I actually learnt fighting from SF4, so that's pretty cool that others are playing SF games to learn.
    I used my experience of utilizing string attacks and used them with Sonic Unleashed. And I believe it's a pretty good game to get other people into games like GoW and DMC.
    What I can say is Street Fighter is definitely the way to go at the beginning. Then you make it to Unleashed as the intermediate level, and them GoW and DMC and FF as the more advanced games. Unless there's an even higher level, which I'd love to hear about from you, Pariah.

    • @thomased22legoyodagaming
      @thomased22legoyodagaming Рік тому +2

      This is a very dubious comment. In fact I think you've got this whole thing almost entirely backwards.
      Unleashed is definitely the most basic and simple out of all of these. It wouldn't be the worst launching pad to teach someone the basic concept of combos. While GoW and DMC would be intermediate as they take that concept and expand upon it. Both in different ways that might teach someone fighting game concepts.
      Meanwhile in street fighter you aren't just hitting buttons. Spacing and movement and the system mechanics make the games infinitely replayable, let alone playing against actual players... I grew up with SF4 myself and I wouldn't throw anyone into that deep end as an introduction. SF4 especially is highly demanding physically and strategically. You have to make multifaceted decisions in seconds at most every time you interact with the opponent. Doing something more complex, faster, is a hallmark of a version of a thing that requires more skill and experience.
      SF as a series also has a reputation amongst casuals for being the "easy beginner fighting game" just because you aren't doing 400000 hit air combos. SF games are among the most competitively depthful amongst traditional 2d fighters though. I wouldn't even throw someone into a game like SF4 or third strike as their first game. I'd hesitate even for SF6, but it has modern controls and world tour, so the game practically does all the work for you.
      I'd still start with a simpler single player game to warm up a person's hands and mind for the concepts they will have to come to grips with in fighting games.

      @@thomased22legoyodagaming That's pretty interesting. To be honest, it has been a while since I've played another combat game, and I'd like to try Final Fantasy at some point. With regards to Unleashed, it is pretty solid with its combat and enemies. If there are any major issues that hold, it would be the Strength Stat and the enemy aggression.
      As someone who's currently beat the game with no upgrades (except combo), you'd be surprised by:
      1. The amounts of bonus points you can get from consecutive hits. My personal best is 300 Hits, which equalled 3000 bonus points.
      2. How deadly enemies can be. They definitely have the abilities to attack, counterattack, and dodge your abilities. But due to the overpowered nature of the Strength stat AND how static and passive enemies are (in the beginning levels), it rendered them way too easy to kill which isn't a very great thing. Heck, I'll list some enemies abilities I found (and credit to Cooliniau):
      a. Medium enemies like Egg Fighters and Nightmares aren't stunned by X attacks. You have to use Y attacks, too. (No brainer)
      b. Medium enemies (ground and aerial) can and *will* guard or dodge your predictable attacks (if you do it too often, they will dodge you). So you must use your Guard Break and Knockback movesets to get them out of a defensive position.
      c. Titans and Big Mothers have very short stun times, so you must use many of your Knockback and Daze attacks to prevent them from hitting you back.
      d. The Masters (Wizard) Enemies are usually unphased by, and dodge regular X and Y attacks. So you must use your special attacks to prevent them from getting up.
      I could go one, but
      3. How useful your combos are without too much strength. Each one is pretty important to survive and traverse the levels, especially from Savannah Citadel and onwards.
      Now that isn't to say there aren't flaws with the gameplay. But it certainly has much good with it. With more polish, refinements, and a few more unique enemies, the Werehog gameplay would be more solid than it is now (which is pretty solid).
      But that's my two cents. Reply or not, have a nice day.
      P.S. Also, that first sentence made me very happy.

    1at mistake : not using training mode enough. Training mode in SF6 is extensive from general mechanics to combos to specific situations and punished an it best place to understand the basics of your character as well as how to counter other characters.
