If you want to see more of these armor cancels in action, Desk has a bunch of old SSFIV videos showing these off "No Red Focus [FADC Pt 3]" and "Parry! [FADC Pt 4]" Really cool to pull up old videos exploring the rabbit hole of fighting game execution, appreciate the work here
A quick note on armour breaking moves in SF4. Any move done as a reversal (as in, done in the reversal window so the little message appears on screen that says “reversal”) gains armour breaking properties. For example if you block a full screen fireball and as a reverse do your own fireball it will break your opponent’s focus attack if they try to absorb it. Armour breaking moves also beat counters like what Gouken and Juri have. The only exception is Dudley’s cross counter which is the only move in the game that can’t be armour broken by reversals (by design). It can be broken by moves that natively have the armour break property though.

@@voidkirb5477 4 is a really cool iteration of street fighter, but for all the cool tech there's all kinds of problems holding it back. Tight links and delay based netcode don't fit together well.
Great video! As a Gouken, the Armour Cancelled Ultra is cool, but if I remember correctly, the Ultra 1 is 13frame start-up. That's long enough to be blockable easily. Though the super was REAL quick, was it 2f? Definitely a contender! God I loved Street Fighter 4!
For people that weren't around to watch competitive SF4 tournament gameplay, even at the highest level very few players could do this reliably on a match. The only player I remember that would do this consistently was Keoma, the brazilian Abel master, who would did kara rekka (which has armor) into command roll
Dude, thank you!! I remember seeing a video of a Japanese Balrog (I think their name was ice0mage or something like that) do an EX armour cancel into ultra 1 and hit the full animation and being floored. I also remember trying to recreate it it in the lab and never being able to. This actually explains why, I never knew about absorbing the hit on the first frame of invuln. Cool video!
I played fighting games only casually during 2016-2022. One random day on september 2023, i got USF4 on steam and it made me absolutely adore fighting games. It was so hard, but so fun captivating. Bought two different fightsticks only for this game lmao. I wish i could play it during its prime, but, i was like 3 years old when this game came out in 2008 lmao. I love SF4, one of my fav games of all time.
later correction: an EX armor cancel to count for Guy should be on frame 1 of EX Run (not on run stop follow up), so below example is not valid in the context of the video, just another cool thing you can do. EX run -> stop with Guy has a 2nd point of armor (on the stop action) that I use to cancel into Ultra2 against meaties (hard to pull off consistently though, but it's super satisfying when you land it). also the neat thing about an armored move on wakeup is that it negates option selects (as the absorbed attack is not considered a wiff).
This analytical approach to fighting games always eluded me. Props to the people that really dig to discover those mechanics. My basic shoto strategy was always fireballs and uppercuts when they jump. lol
I cant believe how much do Gen players need to learn just to master a single character They have to master the 2 stances wich are almost 2 characters by themselves, the 4 supers, all the combos, all the specials, footsies and now shield cancelling
Its not nearly as hard as it sounds. Even without understanding armor cancel tech, once you get Gen in your hands, you get a real good sense of knowing when to switch styles and how to use them to either apply pressure, defend, or mix up. Like finding out that that Gen's crane form charge dive kick, even at its lowest, goes just high enough at the right angle against a wall that you can love tap a charging zangief and laugh off what wouldve been a devastating grapple. Those were fun moments.
Robo-Fortune in Skullgirls has something like this. In 2021, the dash input (PP) was changed to have one frame of leniency, so you could input it as a 1f plink between any two punch buttons instead of a simultaneous press. Robo-Fortune has a frame 1 armoured 5HP normal. Also, in Skullgirls you can do anything out of dash, at any time. I think you can see where this is going. It still happens if nothing hits the armour on that first frame though, which is both good and bad in different ways. Doesn't actually see any competitive use as far as I know, frame-perfect timing of a just-frame plink is too impractical.
Great video! 06:16 the stance cancel can also be used to avoid a particuler nasty setup from Seth. Xian used it against Dashio (favored to win the entire thing) at capcomcup 2015. Highly suggest everyone to watch that match!!
Man some old school tech here I remember desks videos of this happening when I was about 15 lol people hardly ever used this lol yet again theory fighters a g. Met you once in Colchester hope to meet you in the future
I pulled this off on accident once, RBG to beat a safe jump into Ultimate Atomic Buster. It was such a cool moment I still remember it with clarity almost 15 years later.
I am fairly sure that Abel can do EX CoD armour cancel to his regular TT or Falling sky. I remember doing it back in AE2012 as a wake-up option to beat safe jumps.
Yes, EX only limits you from going into non-EX moves with the same input. Normal roll has higher prio than CoD due to kicks having higher prio than punches, but EX CoD has prio over normal roll since two buttons have prio over 1. But DP and HCB have more prio than QCF regardless of buttons.
I really like when fighting games have small quirks like this where it's really hard to execute them, but they're not required to learn to be decent at the game. I love accessibility, but I love much more when I'm watching a set and and a once in a blue moon interaction happens because one of the players decided to go for the risky, hard to pull off, option. I hate to be the old men yelling at the cloud, but I have to admit that we're seeing things like this less and less with each new game in the genre.
I used to do guy ex-run (+stop?) into ultra 2 on wakeup to eat the meaty and get close enough for the grab. I didn't know about this tech, just knew that it worked. I think after some patches, it was multi-hit absorbing, so much more forgiving than the examples in the video.
God i remember learning this as Gen stance switch in 4, if you ever manage to do it in the match it was so hard to finish the game cause you are brimming with hype
Gen's armor cancel was strong back when the game was more vortex/unblockable based. Landing them in matches is much easier when you know the timing of the enemy's unblockable (like ibuki kunai). I stopped going for them after delay tech, much easier way to escape vortex.
Glitches are cool when they're really hard to do, or they need a lot of setup, or you need to make some compromise (a crappy team in MvC2), it makes for hype moments in tournament
Huh I used to occasionally do Guy’s EX Run into Super from time to time when I mained him briefly during original Super SFIV Always found it odd that I was able to do that despite the EX Run using a bar but somehow not? As well as doing the same tactic for cancelling it into Ultra 1 or 2. Now over 13 years later, a video pops up and explains what that was, all this time. ❤
I still really miss kara cancels in Street Fighter. I still do not understand why they started systematically removing them since SFV. Another more relevant application of Guy's EX Run armor cancel is into his EX Flip. It's a solid defensive option in numerous oki scenarios.
I dont think even the hardcoriest of players would be happy to play a bunch of different hitboxes and hurtboxes instead of Ryu or Scorpion, even tho the mechanical takes precedence
...infinites could be patched out too. Such bullshit.. and it all works on Guile...speaking of which, I wouldn't mind reduced charge time... just one frame less on flash and sonic would be fine) +demon voice)
Kind of reminds me of Lucas's attack cancel up smash in smash ultimate. His up smash has frame 1 invincibility, but all ground attacks 2 frames fast or slower can be canceled with jump into a forced rising short hop aerial attack in a technique known as an "attack cancel". Lucas can leverage those two facts by up smashing, using the 1 frame invincibility to eat an attack, and then canceling the up smash into an aerial. With proper execution there's theoretically no risk to always doing but the only super practical application is to power through projectiles with good execution.

Yeah as far as I remember counters are basically "infinite armor" moves so armor breaks break them.
