  • What can we learn from the power-grab by NFL prodigy Caleb Williams and his stage dad? Why does Pablo always feel so bad about saying "no"? And how does one begin to argue better? Plus: Uncle Dennis, giant babies and literally sticking to sports.

    Surely Mina, Pablo and Dan know that the draft was the result of a negotiation between the NFL and the Players Union. The currently employed players have an incentive to keep rookies from making too much money so they won't suffer the wage compression that one sees in other industries. The other players are as much to blame as are the owners. Yet they don't seem to acknowledge this at all.

    Disagree with Mina that players/QBs should get equity - players are temporary employees and only expected to be with teams a relatively short time. They are basically 1099 contractors, you’d never give equity to such a worker. They bring no IP that the company relies on for their entire future.

    These conversations should at least discuss the real issue: Salary caps, drafts and rookie pay scales are mechanisms to make sure smaller market teams can compete. Without small market teams, you don't have a league.
    In association football in the UK - where teams sign players as young kids, but can then buy players - 5 teams have won 26 of the last 30 FA Cups. The 95 pro teams share the other 4. North American pro sports leagues would not exist with 30 teams given that little competition.
    There's much more money to go around - including for the players - because players negotiate for a share of total revenue, then agree to a system for how that money gets divided up that acknowledges star players need teammates and opponents to play with or against. Those other non-superstar players have leverage and they are using it.

    • @EllisCarver
      @EllisCarver 4 місяці тому +1

      The premier league works just fine without prioritizing the needs of small market teams. The sacrifice of not doing so ensures the teams at the top are greater. Y'know, the teams that generate the most revenue.

    As a layperson, I can tell you that Caleb and his father do come off as entitled "quacks" who think they're smarter than the rest of us.
    NFL franchises are not public companies to own equity in. Maybe the Packers have a different set-up but their demands make no sense. How does one own equity in this context? Mina, you're the finance person so explain. Also, the players have a union that bargains on their behalf. Is Caleb above it all, including the NFLPA?
    This inclination of Dan and others to find injustice in every aspect of life is an exhausting way to interact with life. The rest of us don't care about disputes between billionaires and millionaires. We just want our sports teams to do well and bring us joy.
    Also Caleb represents the 1% of players. Who's looking out for the middle class of players and players on the margins?
    P.S. Pablo and Dan, there's a healthy middle in loving rltshps. Redpill and trad men are over-the-top and cringe but you don't have to acquiesce all the time to your significant other either. That is also cringe. If you can extend empathy to your partner and understand her perspective, it's not unreasonable to ask for the same.

    Dan, your ignorance of the pay scale is the US is shocking. I work in an industry that supports talent management on a global scale. Most countries have a reasonably well established pay scale based on scarcity of talent, impact of roles on the bottom line, and job level within the organization. The U.S. is clearly a leader in this area. It might be the most American of things. God bless anyone who successfully bucks the system. I applaud them, but let’s not pretend managing the cost of talent is anything other than smart business.

Ask yourself this: Would David Tepper, the worst and most desperate owner in sports, give Patrick Mahomes a piece of future revenues now until Judgement Day to play for the Panthers? The answer is no. There's no way Caleb Williams is getting a piece of the pie when the bust/underperform rate is over 50% for 1/1 in the NFL Draft...even if he was an unrestricted free agent.

    It's interesting how Mina uses Russell Wilson as the example of why QBs should get equity. Y'know, the guy who got paid 9 figures only to be jettisoned 2 years later. Yeah, that guy should get a stake in the "long term success" of the Broncos. And how would that have worked for Aaron Rodgers? He would get equity for the 4 snaps he played? This is nonsensical. And this is just for QBs? Like let's recreate the corporate model in the locker room. Give QBs the corner office on the 120th floor where they don't have to mingle with the rank and file. QBs already get paid disproportionately more than any other position, destroying markets for less valued players (like, say RBs, who everybody was weeping on the shore over last offseason) since the salary cap is a zero sum game. QBs are going to be fine. Even the moderately successful ones will earn generational wealth.
    And Dan? You're right. In all other industries outside of sports, the parents of college graduates have a platform to lobby for how well their special child should be paid and what they will and won't be subjected to based ENTIRELY on potential and not actual job performance. And that has definitely translated to 20-somethings livin' large and earning more than the folks who have been doing that job for 15-20 years.
    Can we stop with these comparisons to work outside of the unique world of professional sports? They are horrible takes.
