Barbie Movie Description:
Barbie and Ken are having the time of their lives in the colorful and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land. However, when they get a chance to go to the real world, they soon discover the joys and perils of living among humans.
Barbie is a 2023 American fantasy comedy film directed by Greta Gerwig from a screenplay she wrote with Noah Baumbach. Based on the eponymous fashion dolls by Mattel, it is the first live-action Barbie film after numerous computer-animated films and specials. The film stars Margot Robbie as the titular character and Ryan Gosling as Ken, and follows the pair on a journey of self-discovery following an existential crisis. It features a supporting cast that includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell.
A live-action Barbie film was announced in September 2009 by Universal Pictures with Laurence Mark producing. Development began in April 2014, when Sony Pictures acquired the film rights. Following multiple writer and director changes and the casting of Amy Schumer and later Anne Hathaway as Barbie, the rights were transferred to Warner Bros. Pictures in October 2018. Robbie was cast in 2019, after Gal Gadot turned down the role due to scheduling conflicts, and Gerwig was announced as director and co-writer with Baumbach in 2020. The rest of the cast was announced in early 2022, with principal photography occurring primarily at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, in England and at the Venice Beach Skatepark in Los Angeles from March to July of that year.
Barbie premiered at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on July 9, 2023, and was released in the United States on July 21, by Warner Bros. Pictures. Its simultaneous release with Universal's Oppenheimer led to the "Barbenheimer" cultural phenomenon, which encouraged audiences to see both films as a double feature. The film received critical acclaim and has grossed over $1.404 billion, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2023 as well as the highest-grossing film by a solo female director, the highest-grossing film ever released by Warner Bros., and the 14th highest-grossing film of all time.

No One Said Barbie Owed Ken Anything, All I Said Is He Deserved To Feel Like He Mattered. What's So Hard About Making Someone Feel Important? There Are More Ways To Make Someone Feel Important Than Just Physical Stuff Or Being In A Relationship. And it's a Shame That Alot Of Yall Don't See That, Yall Too Worried About Yall Selves Like Barbie Was In This Movie.
You Also Too Focused On Trying To Connect Your Personal Trauma Of Dealing With Persistent Guys Like You Think Ken Was That You're Too Blinded To See The Real Message. This Movie Was About Everyone deserves to be equally valued, loved, and respected as human beings.
Actually pay attention to the movie, Ken was so happy from someone asking him just a simple mundane question like, "Do you know what time it is?" Like do you see what that really has to say about how the Ken's were treated and how they felt?
The best thing to do is to call it out if you see it and support women who come forward with it. Change happens slowly but sticking up for women encourages other men to do so 🙏

This movie was not made for kids, it’s made for those who played with Barbie when they were kids but are now adults with a lot of stuff to deal with in the real world. One of those being the insane beauty standards that Barbie “helped”create.
The BEST thing about being a grown person is that finally the ART is made by your own peers; I feel that with Greta, that whole thing about Barbie flying off the house because stairs are pointless? I almost cried during the trailer when realizing The Director could SEE ME, cause she WAS me.

Bruh i ain t ever seen a barbie doll in real life nor have i seen many tv shows or sexualised music. And i come from poor eastern europe so most of my peers didnt even have tv or a bathroom inside their house. Nevertheless i m not complaining why i said this is to illustrate how little social indoctrination we ve had by these barbie standards. Even then a tall slim blonde beautiful women would be attractive anywhere in the world. Even hundreds of years before barbie was invented. The fact that people say the standards are created by dolls,music and celebrities is so dumb. I didnt even have tv or a phone in the early 2000s and still that kind of women was and is attractive. There was a moment that very curved girls with big butts were in like Beyoncé and then right after as you can see on shows like the next American top model, a very skinny and sometimes unhealthy body was worshiped. Now is changing again and if you wanna go back to Anytime before Christ, there are a bunch of proof of very heavyweight women that were worshiped and adored because people saw that as a sign of wealth. So you and your peers might not have been influenced by Barbies specifically, but every generation is influenced by some sort of media. You don’t see this kind of comment on women’s body coming from indigenous places where they have no access to any sort of media. There, you’ll see different bodies and no one is analyzing who is healthier based on who is chubbier. All that stuff is created by things like Barbie. Barbie never really treated Ken badly, she just didn’t want to be with him and he REFUSED to take the hint. And she doesn’t have to give up her house or belongings to him just so his feelings won’t be hurt lol

Society has and can lead people to act in certain ways but they also aren't completely absolved from independent action. They aren't weighted 50/50 and it's a complex issue, but both create a feedback loop.
People who say this movie is about hating men or anti-motherhood either didn't get it or have not seen it. It's a commentary about how women are viewed as less than in the real world. But the message is not that women are superior to men, it's that we're equal and each have a purpose. Barbie doesn't just exist to look good and Ken doesn't just exist to be by Barbie's side. They are both worthy of happiness and love as individuals.
And America Ferrera's character specifically says that it's okay to "just" be a mum. You don't have to have a career or choose between a career and being a mum. Plus the pregnant Barbie was a real Barbie that was discontinued because people thought the idea of it was funny seeing as she didn't have a vagina.
Speaking of, the ending with her going to the gynecologist, now that she has a vagina, is actually genius.
Margot Robbie is fabulous as always but Ryan Gosling just took it to another level!

it's dramatized and condensed for film purposes, but yes.. I've had random men, strangers or people I've known, grab me, touch me, talk to me inappropriately, I've been catcalled, etc.. this is real and happening now, to many women. On a regular, daily basis, through many forms and avenues. And the worst part is, it was worse when I was a teenager. A literal child. It still happens as an adult - I just don't go outside as much anymore.
You don't see it and assume its a thing of the past because you're not the person on the receiving end. You're not the intended audience.

for me, it started when i was 11. my dad would send me into the gas station after church to buy us sodas and pay, and the men in line behind me would stare at me and comment on my body. it got to the point i had to ask my mom to tell him to either go in with me or stop sending me in entirely. and that's not even to include the weirdo comments family "friends" would make when i was even younger about my body and boyfriends. i was about 13 when i learned to get these grown ass men (40s-60s) to not belittle me was to "flirt" (aka bite back but with the guise of a sweet smile and banter). it makes my skin crawl thinking about it all now.

Forreal. I grew up fat and tomboy ish in Asia, which is considered a death sentence as far as any boys liking me in school, but even I got harrassed as a kid. One time walking home, this random guy comes up starts asking me my name, asking me to be friends, asking me to go home with him. I was 13. Another time I was in 7-11, this random man came up put his arm around my shoulder, said you ready to go? Let's go. Kept stroking up and down my arm. I was so scared I was death staring the 7-11 cashier to help, he didn't know wtf was going on. I just kept saying no sorry I have class then ran out.
Yeah, it’s crazy how many people don’t think it still happens. Not necessarily catcalled, but I was followed for several blocks the other day. He walked shoulder to shoulder with me and wouldn’t back off. I had to go into a store and he literally stood right outside the door waiting around for me. The majority of men would never act like that but they need to be aware that just because they’re not out there harassing women doesn’t mean it’s not happening and it’s scary for women when it does happen. I had a guy dump a carton of milk on me when I was younger because I told him to f**k off after he refused to leave me alone. It’s a scary situation because you never know how they’ll react, getting a carton of milk dumped on you is probably one of the less violent reactions that women can see from these type of people.

Yes! I've seen so many commentaries to this movie that happened to have all been posted by men, and they all (that I've seen) think this line is so weird. To me it's SO important because when I was growing up we had all of these gorgeous, skinny actresses in movies or TV shows where they were supposed to be nerdy / ugly/overweight / whatever. And dude, it's so damaging to go back and watch America Ferrera portrayed as the fat girl in Sisterhood of the Traveling pants or Ugly Betty, or see Anne Hathaway constantly get made fun of for her weight and The Devil Wears Prada. I was a young girl absorbing that and believing that people of that body size were overweight! I really appreciated this movie for making sure that they could get their point about everyone feeling unattractive across without accidentally making young girls feel like that's what an unattractive person looks like.
@@briarrose2542I do think it undermined the message of the movie a bit. the whole idea is that Barbie is a doll of a woman, not a real woman, and even she didn’t think she was beautiful after just a few interactions with the real world. that’s what begins the whole conversation about how difficult it is to be a woman, because even an inanimate object in the shape of a woman doesn’t feel good enough.
Greta wrote the script with Margot in her mind as the lead. Her being so “perfect” and saying ‘I’m not stereotypical Barbie pretty anymore” wasn’t supposed to make sense. You weren’t supposed to look at Barbie and relate to her situation, you’re supposed to relate to the insecure feeling she has.
I understand why they would want some fluff line right after she says that, but Margot’s appearance still being stunning was an important part to the scene. I get not wanting to see another perfect blond be like ‘ew I’m so ugly’, but Stereotypical Barbie is a doll, she’s never felt like this before. She didn’t even know it was possible to not look perfect, and even tho her appearance hasn’t changed, the way she feels about herself has and it’s only after ONE day living what we do everyday.
I love that line because is what everyone is thinking and made everyone laugh. At the same time I think she is perfect for the role for this too, there is a heartbreaking interview with her were they ask if she feels beautiful and sexy and her answer is that she feels only when she is playing women that are, when she is being herself she doesn't. If a freaking godness like Margot Robbie can't feel secure and pretty in this world, there is something really wrong about it. Meanwhile there is a viral twitter of a man that look like a thumb saying "she's a six" in this movie because this and that and bla bla bla.
I actually hated that line because The movie could have shown that even the most Beautiful Women can feel like they aren't pretty enough, but they just turned it into a joke of "She's too pretty to feel ugly."
@@katielee7364 Of course you're entitled to your opinion, but I didn't see it that way at all! She still felt ugly, and she was still nervous about getting ready for Ken later. The movie was just telling us that even though she FELT ugly, she wasn't.
The "anti-woke" crowd tried to paint this movie as some sort of feminist propaganda, which is sad since this movie wasn't just about or for women, it was great for men too. It touches on so many topics men go through and how alike we all are. The speech at the end that breaks the spell women are in are exactly how men feel too. Instead of the movie just speaking about toxic masculinity and how it's bad, it showed how it's bad for us men too and the unfairness of what we go through. It's a great movie!
Also, when this movie came out, I took my Mom to go see both "Oppenheimer" and "Barbie", which we both loved and saw the message that many people miss out on.
Yea that made no sense.. the message of Ken was “don’t let a woman or relationship define you” and essentially “don’t be a simp” which is no different from what half the “Sigma Male” crowd is saying half the time.. I think the movie did a great job of balancing both viewpoints.
Read FULL FRONTAL FEMINISM some time, if you can. It's a really great primer on 21st century feminism, and one of the chapters talks about how feminism can benefit men because it helps remove the burden of toxic masculinity.
One portion had the author interviewing a psychiatrist who ran a men's group, and how all the men say that the hardship in their lives "Made them tough."
It was a coping mechanism for pointless cruelty they couldn't avoid.

The girl being called Sasha is a tribute to Bratz! Her friends at the lunch table are also representing the other Bratz dolls. Also, When Sasha gets in the car after school her mom refers to her as Bunny Boo Boo. Sasha's nickname in Bratz is Bunny Boo, which is also the name of her pet rabbit.

@@MonsterRat1000 well they probably won’t claim it out right if Bratz is owned by a different company, but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s true. ( I played with bratz myself, watched the movies, played the video games etc.) you can look up the bratz franchise too if you want more info on them. I kind of hoped they would reference other dolls too like Polly pocket but the more I thought about it, the Bratz were their biggest competitor at the time

An interesting point that I didn't see people talking about is how a man can be dangerous so fast and out of proportion because of some inconvenience they face.
Like, in the movie Barbie didn't see Ken as important or his self person, but that's how she was created too, in real life we see that no one in Mattel gives a fuck about him. The same way all of ken's world IS Barbie cause this is the way he was created. It's not /their/ fault it's Mattel's fault.
But then Ken did all those destructive things, and almost ruined all of their world JUST to get back at Barbie, he did those things TO HURT Barbie on propose. Meanwhile when Barbie hurt him she didn't realize she was hurting him, that's just how things were.
It's really scary that this is a reality too. Women die everyday because they "did something" that pissed off some men. Some "didn't give enough attention" to them, or didn't want to have sex with them, and the list on awfully long...

Gloria’s speech is 100% my favorite part of the movie, we as women have to get up to so many people expectations, and even if we reach them, you’re still not good enough. It’s like people think of us as a Barbie doll and not a human being.
When I went to, I didn’t think it was a 10 out of 10 as most people were saying, but when I left the movie theater I couldn’t give it a lower rating than what people were saying. This movie was amazing

That's not what she was ashamed of. She was ashamed of being a bad friend. She never hung out with him or asked about his life and desires. When she said, "This is my house" I immediately asked myself... "Where do the Kens stay. Does Ken even have a house?" Barbie doesn't think to ask and she's known him for a long while. Of course, it never occurs to ask for her because she's a Barbie and Ken was literally created as an accessory to her. Of course Ken is obsessed with getting her validation, because his purpose is to be an accessory to Barbie. They both learn and grow through the movie.
Basically, Barbie's original "sin" was that she didn't want to be Ken's girlfriend and always wanted to hang out with other Barbies. But she did not intentionally degrade him. Ken (and any other man) is not entitled to be anybody boyfriend.

This movie is a satire. It took punches at male and female toxicity. It took punches at corporate boards, designated traditional gender roles imposed on men and women by society. No one was spared. The movie actually had a great message of finding what makes you happy and authentic. Trying to live up to societies expectations can be destructive and detrimental to finding your life path. Do you. Be authentic.
Ken was also my favorite character. Ryan Gosling was brilliant in this role.
Another fun fact is that Barbie Land was flipped from the real world. So Kens were portraying women in real life and the Barbies men.

Ryan Gosling has rightfully been getting a lot of acclaim here, but this is Margot Robbie’s best performance to date in my opinion. She’s absolutely incredible and I hope she’s in the awards conversation this year. Greta Gerwig is really such an incredible talent.

For Alan & Magic Earring Ken, they are more obscure dolls because they hinted at Ken being gay. Alan was Ken's "best friend" & could wear all of Ken's clothes. Magic Earring Ken had an earring in the left ear, which was seen as code for at the time it came out that someone was gay.
Just to clarify Barbie at least Margot Robbie’s Barbie didn’t have any romantic feelings for Ken. There was assumptions that they were a “couple”, but again it was more one-sided love and it was Ken who had the romantic feelings and never took the hint that SHE ONLY SAW HIM AS A FRIEND. She did say things like “that is Barbie’s dream house not Ken’s dream house”… that does make Ken feel insignificant at times. So I understand Ken’s frustrations and one-sided love and tbh all he knew was that Ken is always linked to Barbie. BUT STILL..it was obvious that Barbie doesn’t see him in any romantic way. Which is why the dialogue in the end was so important to Ken. He needs to figure out who he is outside of just being beach or being linked to Barbie. I've heard a lot of men and women came out of this movie enjoying the different messages. Some people cried. I enjoyed myself. Casting was good. Not everyone thought Ryan was a good cast but he proved them wrong. I don't think this was "woke" or "anti men".
Cat calling and outright groping does still happened although maybe not at the beach like that. When I was younger and went bar hopping downtown, a guy outright grabbed my butt as I passed by on the sidewalk. I was in a group of both girls and guys. Was too stunned to make a big deal and kept walking. I think it’s more pronounced in this movie to make a point and show Barbie how different her world and our world is.

When The hotel I worked at was under construction we were not allowed to go anywhere alone (Per Our General Managers rules) Due to the fact the Construction workers were harassing the Women workers.
Our Boss who was also a man was so worried for our safety when those men were around.
As a guy what I got from it was that both men and women need to treat each other equally and with kindness. We also need to realize that society should not be 100% for women or 100% for men because it causes feelings of resentment from whichever side is being less respected/represented. Thats on top of obviously all the themes that are straight in your face. Just my two cents anyway.

yeah as far as the age rating goes, people just assumed that the movie being about a kids toy meant that it was a childrens movie and didnt ever bother to actually look up anything about the movie-but its pg-13, which was a huge hint that it had a different audience, and the cast and director were another big hint. i like that it aimed instead for adults who played with barbie when they were kids and when the barbie brand was at its peak, its been a while since there was a pop culture moment that so many adult women got to shamelessly enjoy together-i loved seeing so many girls and women dressed in pink at the theaters!

One of concept that I've noticed is that when Barbie started noticing that reality was not what she believed, they tried to disregard her questioning and put her in a box.
If you felt that Barbie treated Ken badly, imagine if the roles were reversed. Barbie trying to get Ken's attention, trying to have her own power in government. The comment at the end where the narrator says Ken will have as much power in Barbie's World when women have as much power in the real world.
I think the point is that both realities are not particularly good and changes need to be made to make everyone equal.

I have had large breasts since I was 12, and as a result, I have had a lifetime of men harassing me. It's not like every single day, but at least once a week, I'm catcalled. The other day, I was standing on an intersection waiting in downtown DC, in the tourist part of town, and some dude in a suit rolled down his window and outright propositioned me, using the foulest language imaginable. Outright groping doesn't happen as much in the daytime, but I honestly don't remember the last time I went to a club and escaped without a couple if guys "accidentally" grabbing my boob.
So yes. It's exaggeration slightly for the film, but women really do deal with that pretty much all the time, from the time they are teenagers onward.

I think enough people have covered the "it's not for kids" thing so I won't rehash. I think my favorite moment, which Greta Gerwig had to FIGHT to keep in the movie, was when Barbie was sitting on the bench next to the old woman. You have to remember that Barbie had NEVER seen on old person before, never seen aging, sickness, decay, even the less than perfect "Weird Barbie" was just sort of weird and bent out of shape. Barbie saw an old woman, who was shamelessly showing her age (something our society tell us is The Worst Thing That Can Happen, we have entire industries meant to keep women looking young), and immediately finds her beautiful. And that woman AGREED. She KNEW IT. And yeah. That's beautiful.

I know other commenters have already mentioned that being catcalled and harassment still happens today. The movie wasn’t that far off. I just wanted to share my experience. I remember being 14 (and at that time i had multiple people think I was still in elementary school fyi) in line at a convention and my parents having to put me behind them because some grown man kept trying to look down my shirt. I was just a child. And this kind of occurrence happens to so many other women.

This isnt really a stalwart defense of Barbies actions toward Ken at the beginning, but its something the movie made me think about that I wanted to share:
A lot of times girls (particulary teens or young adults) end up in relationships that they dont want to be in because they feel like they SHOULD want to be in them. Sometimes guys can push girls into relationships sure, but its not even just about that. Other girls, friends, or family can push someone into a relationship they dont want to be in. Its just a weird societal standard we have set.
For example, I remember breaking up with a high school boyfriend and my mom asking me "Why? What did he do?" To which I responded "He didnt do anything, I just wasnt that into him."
I was then told that I shouldve stayed with him anyway, because if he was nice then surely I wouldve developed feelings for him. I remember my friend talking to me one day about a similar experience-- her parents were pushing her to date a guy that she wasnt into simply because she didnt date a lot and they wanted her to date someone.
Thats kind of how I felt when I saw Barbie blowing off Ken. Shes in a relationship she doesnt want to be in but in their world, thats just how it is. Its Barbie and Ken. Barbie going through maturity in the real world and realizing that they were both hurt by that system is something a lot of girls irl also go through as they get older.
Tldr; boys and girls, dont date someone you know you arent interested in because other people told you that you should. It never ends well. 🫡

I feel like a lot of people expected Barbie to be something like Transformers or G.I. Joe, like an easy watch, but with Greta Gerwig directing, and her and Noah Baumbach writing, ( they wrote Lady Bird, Marriage Story, Little Women, Frances Ha respectively), this was never going to be a one-dimensional story.
The production design, film references, casting, attention to detail of the dolls, discontinued or not, and unique humor fire on all cylinders for me.
They ended the movie with her seeing her gyno because it subverts expectations in a brilliant way. We think she’s going to a job interview or to do something powerful, when in fact doing day to day tasks as a women like seeing your gynecologist and just existing as a woman is inherently powerful. She doesn’t have to get a job to “win” or be the best version of herself at the end of the movie. Taking care of yourself, going to the doctor, that’s perfectly good enough.

Ken's arc is actually a perfect illustration of male adolescence. Obviously Ryan Gosling is a fully grown man Lol but that's what makes his performance so brilliant. He portrays Ken in such a childlike and easily impressionable way. This is why it makes perfect sense why he goes a bit overboard when he first starts to get a sense of his own power and agency. Since a lot of other people have already hit on things I wanted to say, I'll talk about the whole "people want to see action movies/people don't watch those movies" thing. I'm reminded of what Matt Damon said about studios moving away from mid-budget films (like rom-coms, dramas, comedies ie non-blockbusters), and how that has placed such an emphasis on the billion-dollar dollar movie, much to the detriment of lower-budget (creatively interesting) movies. People DO want to see rom-coms, romances, women-focused movies but they aren't being made because they don't make a billion dollars. They CAN make a profit that is relative to the size of the budget but studios aren't interested in that anymore, largely due to the impact that streaming has had on their bottom lines. With people no longer buying physical copies of movies, it limits the amount of ways that studios can make their money back thus making the theatrical release revenue more important. It's not necessarily an issue with audience demand -- in fact I constantly see people asking for more rom-coms like the 90's and 2000's. It's a studio issue more than anything.
Like from a more personal standpoint, I HATE superhero movies, space movies, most sci-fi shit so finding good movies to watch in the past few years has been a STRUGGLE! I wish more mid-budget movies would get made and given the promo they deserve bc ya girl is bored out here!
ETA: I use the phrase "billion-dollar movie" just to indicate movies that make massive amounts of money, not that they are only seeking specifically a billion dollars. I know a lot of you are VERY literal, so fyi I am not saying JUST A BILLION DOLLARS. Ok!

Cat calling is still a thing and not just subjective to construction. I would know cuz it happened to me recently. I was just walking to work and my work is on our Main Street in town. And these men would sit or stand in the same spot 90% of the time and it’s the same group always sitting around on on this little brick wall that surrounds some plants and half of them will be sitting on that and then the other half will be standing up against the shops so they’re on both sides and I have to walk through them. It didn’t matter what I was wearing I could be dressed comfortably or I could be dressed up they’d alway try to get my attention with saying inappropriate things and all of them just staring at me the whole time creeped me the fuck out so glad I’m not working there anymore having to deal with that practically everyday I should be so thankful none of them ever tried to touch me while walking by but that’s probably bcuz of other bystanders being around. Thankfully. And the fact that it happens in public and they have no shame doing it either is even more disgusting. Now this one is not cat calling but i still wanted to mention it so another thing that has happened to me was when I was shopping with my dad at this mini super market in town and I was helping him put groceries in the car and then out of nowhere my dad raised his voice and spoke with a very hard tone and said to a guy walking by “What are you staring at my daughters ass for!” It startled me and I was too embarrass to turn around and look at the guy who had been checking me out. My dad told me that the guy smirked at him in response and the only reason my dad didn’t chase after him and try to mess him up is only bcuz he physically wasn’t in the best shape. My dad had trouble breathing. I just remember wanting to hide and hide my body with a huge paper bag or something. It made me feel very self-conscious. I think I might’ve been 22 at the time but it’s the fact that I look very young to begin with. I’m 28 now and I still get a lot of people that think I’m in high school still. So you can only imagine how much younger i looked at 22. So the fact that older men are checking you out though you look like a high schooler which means they don’t mind checking out minors. Which is even more unsettling. And I felt so uncomfortable in that store after that I started to wear baggy clothes anytime I’d go over there. Because after that incident I became so self-conscious and starting paying more attention to men’s behaviors and then I started to notice even more men staring at me a lot. And what makes me uncomfortable is that the men that are always staring at me and checking me out are always older men never really men my age. It’s normally men between 50-70 yrs of age. And it makes it even worse when it is married men and they are literally out with their wives but when they notice you they don’t stop staring and make it so freaking obvious. It’s just so disgusting.

The reaction was great! My only comment is about the catcalling. I found it ironic that you later said in the movie that you’re to scared ti trust poeple and accepts drink, but yet you thought catcalling and the harassment were a bit too much 😅😂
It's really frustrating, because I think there's a really great message for women AND MEN in this movie, but it's so cluttered sometimes that you can miss the parts that matter and be stuck on the parts that don't. When I first watched the movie I thought 'Kenough' and all the Ken's arcs was a joke at men, simply because they treated it so lightly, and all the context around men hiding insecure feelings and the need to accept yourself are like... really small parts of it. But now that I've rewatched it everything makes a lot more sense... and it's really fun! Still don't like the pacing, and man if you have something to say make sure you say it clearly, but I had a lot of fun regardless.
Some men are too blinded by their dislike of women that they can’t see the message of “hey you can be your own person and not have to put down women for male validation bc you should do you king”
It's a comedy. They made jokes about everyone's roles, personalities, and emotional needs/breakdowns - but some people only get stuck on it when it's the Kens
I think the reason why the men’s actions are “dramatized” Is because Barbie is experiencing it all at once for the first time.
Unfortunately so many of us experience these things (all or some) constantly.
At work, school, the gym, stores, bars, going on walks or anything else. It’s definitely exhausting which is why so many resonated with the film . At some point something Barbie feels or experiences hit hard with the female audience. (Cat calling, assault, objectification, self image issues, contradictory expectations etc).
Yup! My sisters first job when she was 16 it was just her and the Manager which was a guy and she came home crying one day because he was making her uncomfortable, so My dad called and quit for her (Also said some pretty colorful words.) then When I worked as a hostess I was about 18 and one of the older managers (45) Would constantly put his hands on the younger girls (16 To 18) lower backs making them uncomfortable but we were too scared to say anything. it happens way too much and right under a lot of peoples noses.
Also Now as an Adult I went to a bar with some friends and a man wouldn't leave me alone even after I told him I was married and was only interested in hanging out with my friends and He ONLY left when my Guy friend shooed him off.

He was standing at the end of the aisle, while I stared him down, since my parents weren’t around. My sister was incredibly uncomfortable, but I literally had to have a stare down with a 50-year-old man because he kept on ogling my 10-year-old sister. It’s like every day it is something new… and no matter how we react (polite or not) there’s always a negative response.

It's has a sweet naive character that has fish out of water adventures and shines a light on society and has a lot of laughs along the way.
I got cat-called by a boy no older than 10 yesterday, standing in line at the pharmacy.
I'm 4'9", long haired, and my hoodie was covering my face partially.
The waiting line was long, so I kinda blocked the main aisle.
Suddenly I heard two boys running before I saw them.
One boy flicked my hair (which pulled my head fast) with his hand running past me saying, "He thinks your cute."
I muttered out loud to myself,
" 'm 43.. f*ckin staranger thinking its okay to touch me.."
Dad did nothing except for yelling for the boys to ve back to him like they were 2 dogs in the yard.

i adore this movie and the message .. my fav barbie’s were the “Fashionista” Barbie’s mostly because they had moveable elbows, hands and knees lol
to be fair I think the reminder about the house, brainwashing friends thing and taking over the government and planning tomake it so not one can change it back is that YES ken was hurt and reacting in a way to over compensate but you cant hesitate on stopping him just because his feelings were hurt...they could talk about it later...and barbie still worried about ken and disliking how she hurt him did show she cared...
Being a 6 foot tall, overweight, broad shouldered woman, the things Gloria says in her speach about how difficult it is to be a woman in this world, hit home for me. I know men go through similar experiences. And i think that is getting worse for men, especially younger men, but still not to the extent women do. Also women are inundated with these attitudes there whole live. Women are told it isn't ok to have wrinkles and grey hair. But men are sexier when they get grey and have wrinkles. When I saw this in the theater some young men were being confused why people were laughing at the end. I turned and sad "She's a real girl now, with all the real girl parts, so she needs to see a gyno." I really enjoyed your post movie analysis.
Another topic that can be brought up that isn't a lot, the relationship between Ken and barbie. Like a boy and girl who grew up together. Once you hit a certain age the sweet friendly boy you once played with has turned into a stranger that believes you owe them something.
Something im noticing is this movie is simply calling out what its like being a woman, using barbie to explain it deeper. I think thats what angers people and make them think its an anti man movie.
Yup. Nothing of this movie regarding gender is especially mind blowing or unexpected, but for some people this is the first time they've had to notice it and it makes them upset.
They didn’t do women empowerment at all. Instead, they clearly showed us one gender can’t possibly live repressed under the other. There needs to be a balance of power and respect. Neither worlds Barbie land or Kendom were perfect.
And Barbie’s own hypocrisy of thinking her world was fine as long as it benefited her gender.
Truth be told, Ken was created as an accessory to Barbie.
When you’re a kid and playing with dolls, the idea of having a boyfriend or a Prince Charming is just that. An idea. Something to have. You never really put a role to Ken except to entertain Barbie once in a while. You rather she had parties in her doll house and change outfits. So Barbie treating Ken the way she did wasn’t registered as her being rude or bad. It’s just how it was.
Fun fact: Mattel didn’t care about Ken at all. They said do whatever you want with him. They only cared about Barbie.

Most women don’t see the cat calling and harassment portrayed as far fetched. As a man you probably don’t see it being as extreme, but it actually is.

I did like that the actual creator of barbie was the old woman on the bench. Mattel finally put respect on her name with having her character and then her actually in it at the bench scene. That look she gave Barbie was a real moment of her seeing where barbie is now and her legacy.
I don't think she's the actual creator, I read that that lady is a costume designer, but I can't remember why they brought her in. the creator lady, Ruth passed away not even recently

I'm the opposite personally, I adored the second half of the movie, made me tear up like 4 times lol.
But the first half of the movie took me a little while to get into, was a fun first half but I didn't really know what it was doing until the second half (I s'pose is a good way to put it).
I appreciate some of the second half just doesn't land for you due to your personal experiences not being that involved with the subject matter, but it hits hard for me!
Loved this movie, fun humour, good messages, smart writing in places, and killer dance numbers! :D
Side note:
I don't think the harrassment was "over-dramatised", there are horrible horrible men out there who do a lot worse and get away with it because that's the world we live in - not to say all men are like that of course, just there are far too many that are! Count yourself lucky if you've not seen anything like it yourself.

Also I don’t remember how this movie was marketed. I saw the trailers and would see promos on twitter. It is rated PG-13. So knowing that gives you a clue that maybe this isn’t a kids movie and might have some adult themes. (depending on the kid/family). 🤷♀️
Ruth is Ruth Handler the creator of Barbie and the first CEO of Mattel, Barbie and Ken and are named after her kids Barbara and Kenneth. Alan is named after her son in law.
I have to say that, at least where I live, I have seen a lot of unfair treatment to women. As someone who grew up the only male in the house, you hear about it a lot, and see it on occasion.
As an example, we had a window that was broken. My mothsr called around to see how much it would cost to have it replaced, and the lowest offer she got was $500. She then told the guy, "oh, my husband won't be happy to hear that." Which was a lie... no husband around, but the person giving the estimate goes, "oh... well, I suppose we could do it for about $120..." That's quite a difference in prices. But things like that happened a lot of the time.
To think that "all men" are like this would be an incorrect thought (the movie has a limited time to make its message, so yes, exaggeration is necessary), and yes there are women out there that are horrible too (once again to say "all" would also be incorrect), but the message of the movie does point out that selfishness, regardless of what form it takes, (toxic masculinity, willfully ignoring another person's feelings, etc.) is dangerous and can cause problems that we currently have to become exasperated, causing more problems, more trouble, and more pain than it would to actually stop and discuss the problem(s).
Life is already hard enough without adding more difficulties to the pile. Just be nice to one another.

One of your underlying premises is wrong… you criticize the movie’s message being too mature for a movie that was meant for kids.
The PG-13 rating alone shows that this movie was not meant for kids. Ever. A kid’s toy was just the vehicle used to connect to the audience.
(People who took their 4 and 5 year old daughters to see it only because it was about “Barbie” and then complained about the more adult-oriented content obviously didn’t do the advance homework that a parent should do, something as simple as checking a movie’s rating).
Love Barbie I have some of the animated Barbie movies. This is the 1st Barbie movie with more than one Barbie.
Allan is my favorite. And my favorite Barbie was Peaches and Cream Barbie. She had this beautiful peach colored dress. ❤

The anti-woke crowd tried to bury this movie, it was very petty and weak. The movie was a little heavy handed at times, but it drove the point home. I really enjoyed this movie, a lot.
