Struggling on a Carb issue for a 74 Ford with a 460 - Part 1

  • Watch me learn things the hard way. Carb work is not my specialty but with enough time and dedication, I can usually figure things out. It’s a Holley 7002-1 Carb on a Ford 460 Engine from around 1974 or 1973 (not original). It acts like it’s starving for air. I’m sure something isn’t set right, or maybe the carb isn’t compatible.
    Any advice appreciated.

those tiny holes at 3 mins are your transfer slots they should be adjusted to about tiny squares with your idle screw (on throttle) before you install carburetor. Install carburetor. Idle should be close to 800rpm for manual transmission truck and around 1000 rpm for an automatic in park. You adjusted the transfer slots to square with idle screw do not touch this screw again from here you adjust idle by changing the timing on the distributor one way raises idle one way lowers idle. Make sure float levels are set to 1/2 sight glass (adjust if needed). Set all idle mixture screws on carburetor to 1 and a half turns out (bottom mixture screws out then turn screws out) Get a vacuum gauge and port it in to full manifold vacuum take a measurement with engine idling my 460 hangs out around 18inhg. slowly 1 at a time turn mixture screws out in 1/4 turn increments all screws need to be the same amount of turns (vacuum gauge should increase if gauge goes down turn opposite way) the point is to get the highest reading at idle while having the needle on the gauge steady (should not be bouncing around). with all of these in check your carburetor idle circuit is right. You may have to re-jet the carb if its rich or lean if driving but thats a different issue. Now looking at that adapter plate is the adapter holes lined up with the intake holes? If not your reducing flow and may be looking for a spread bore adapter. Google spread bore intakes and square bore intakes. That carburetor is a spread bore so it needs to be on a spread bore intake or adapted to a square bore intake. The above procedure must be followed step by step or it will never be right especially the transfer slots. Alot of people (like you) adjust the idle with that screw but it actually will adjust idle but at the same time the truck will not run properly. Heres a link ua-cam.com/video/xscWLSpB5Go/v-deo.html
