Struggling on a Carb issue for a 74 Ford with a 460 - Part 2

  • Watch me learn the hard way…. I’m not a carb specialist and I’m actually more of a fuel injected person, but this truck hasn’t been on the road in maybe 15 years. It’s also for a family member that isn’t really known for paying for than he has to, so you’ll notice I fabricated parts like the kick down instead of buying a carb with it already. The carb adapter is also not meant for this engine but using it backwards and switching the porting around it fits and holes line up in the porting just fine. If this wasn’t a family member’s, you’d probably see me ordering the correct part but he also wanted this truck back ASAP, so there was a few 3am work nights on it. We also didn’t put a vacuum gauge on it for fine tuning, which I hope to do later.
Feel free to leave a comment and any advice if you’ve seen a Holley 7002-1 with a weird idle. I suspect something like a clogged jet in the idle circuit and it may need to be opened up if it doesn’t clear up.

OK first off get yourself a vacuum gauge to properly tune it or at least a tach or both. You're going to want to monitor idle rpms and idle vacuum. And the mixture screws are 1 1/4 for a starting point. And on holley carbs you want your idle down lower because of the idle transfer slots. You'll see them in the front of the primary butterflies when you flip the carb upside-down those slots dump in fuel for your idle and turning the idle up moves the butterflies more open and exposing more of the transfer slot and dumping in more fuel which can cause I rich condition at idle or even make the engine stall. You may even want to throw a timing light on there and set your timing because advancing the timing can speed up the idle and retarding it slows it down as well. You may want to check out
Unity motor sports channel or uncle Tony's garage channel here on UA-cam where they have detailed videos on tuning holley carburetors.
