I shoot tons of 4k60p in often very hot environments and have never had any overheating issues, apart from the camera getting so hot it's a bit uncomfortable to hold. I can trust my A7IV.
So you do get overheating issues. Maybe not with the system internals but a camera too hot to hold it's a problem. A7III heating challenges caused several issues on the sensor causing burned pixels due to the heat exposure, reflecting this afterwards on the images taken by the camera.
@@rodrigomartin-hidalgo1592 I don't see it as a problem. It only happend like two times, when i shot 4k60p for several hours in a row, with the screen closed .
@@rodrigomartin-hidalgo1592 I’ve run my a7iii 4K/24 for 5 continuous hours. 8 hour shoot day. Just sold it for the a74. It better not overheat. I’ll shoot 4K/24 with some 60 but I have fx3 for that. I hope it will be a good bcam.
I've used the a74 multiple times recently for long periods of time in a professional setting and haven't had any overheating issues. I wonder if there is a bad batch out there. Side note, I shot in 4k 60p and 24p in the highest quality the camera allows.
Collaborating with other creators to talk about Sony A7IV is a great idea. I hope Sony is listening and will do something about it. I got mine last week and have been setting up, doing some tests. So far so good. I have had it running for more than 30 mins and no overheating. This is my first full-frame Sony camera. I chose this over A7Siii because of its price, photo capabilities, and video image quality.
@@cristos82 that is sad to hear, seriously. I thought about buying this but missed out and it’s out of stock, maybe for good reason now looking back in hindsight. I truly like the camera and would love to buy it but I can’t trust that it won’t overheat on me, and it’s not something i should have to deal with when paying for a top spec product.
Once the overheating setting is changed to high you shouldn't have any issues. I've shot full weddings at 4k 60 and no issues whatsoever. This included over 1 hour continuous on a tripod. The crop I can take as a complaint but having used this extensively I don't accept overheating as a real concern at all.
I've had it overheat twice even with the setting changed to high. I've had the temp warning come up a handful of times as well. I always shoot with the screen out and just blow on the back of the camera for about 20 seconds and the warning goes away
I have never had any overheating.I feel like everyone is hyping up this overheating issue when they haven’t even experienced it themselves. I don’t doubt some people have had issues here and there, but it sounds like most shooters will be just fine. Unless you record nonstop for hours, you’ll be fine. Most people record a few mins at a time
Great video Jason! Thanks for including me here. Just wanted to let people know in the comments here that I've had additional overheating problems since I recorded this. I LOVE the A7IV, but it's been hard for me to use it for video over the FX3 lately.
Hi Jason, Josh, Chris, Good to see you all in one video and keeping it real! Am using both Canon and Sony as I’ve been trying to find a hybrid one body cam. I can share my experience using the Canon R5 and here’s how I’ve been dealing with it: 1) firstly, Canon put 3 barriers, most likely to protect their cinema line. 1 is legitimate, the other 2 are crippling: - Legit: camera is shooting at high frame rates and for a long time and so to protect the longevity and other components, it shuts down. This is good for longevity but not reliable for professional paid work; - Non-legit 1: 30min limit recording time. As a one person operator, this is another long list to worry about. The excuse of Euro tax went away awhile ago and Sony and Pana has had unlimited recording for past 2-3yrs+ (2+ for Sony and 3+ for Pana); - Non-legit 2: artificial timer which through several firmware updates, have improved it but still there even when it is not hot enough to warrant shutting down. Their response is being conservative like the speed limit when cars can go faster but most components are made to commercial and industrial temperatures so I don’t buy this one bit Having said that, I would break it up to short and long form recordings and the workarounds that I think will apply to Sony or any cameras that overheat as we cannot overcome thermal physics. Make a body that is small and water or weather proof, heat will be trapped and cannot escape so overheating will occur. For short form, you can: - No modification required: Use Tilta fan that is quite clever and it will cool down the backside where the LCD is located and in R5, the sensor where a lot of heat is generated. Also as Jason mentioned, the other two heat generated are the battery which I use dummy battery with external power. The other one is the memory cards (writing data to card); - Modification to body with passive cooling: Kolari Vision can make a mod to R5 for under $500 that doubles the recording times but removes your warranty. I haven’t had time to stop and send this in but planning to do it when I can spare some down time; - I haven’t tried using a battery grip to see if there is more surface area to alleviate heat to release; - I do make it a habit to turn on and off the R5 when not recording to give it time to cool down - Net/net: I get more than double the recording time published by Canon for the R5. Plenty for run and gun short form Long form recording: - Use an external recorder like the Ninja 5/5+ or other ones to bypass the processing workload required on high frame rate and/or long recording times Alternatively, when it doe overheat as I do forget to keep track of it all, I simply move from 4K HQ (8K oversampled to 4K) modes to 4K standard mode (with no artificial timer but still 30min recording limit), and I can keep recording without shutting down. Just turn up the saturation to try to match colors with 4K HQ mode. Now I have the A74 coming in a couple weeks and will make tests to see the limits and workarounds. Good luck and looking forward to more of your A74 contents!
Ive been using the A7Iv for two years shooting wedding videos and can't say anything bad about it without nitpicking. Ive put them through hell and back and have never had any issues. Rain, many hours exposed to very hot temperatures as well as even the cold (Canada). For the price point they are well worth it.
If you turn on the Auto temp something to High in the setting, the A74 is now able to record in a very long time. And I'm talking about even 4K 10bit, but you would need a faster card. For 1080p 4:2:2, you can record until the battery runs out. So I dont see any problem with overheating with the A74.
Ever since setting my A7IV to high temp mode i havent had it over heat on me once. I also live in socal and shoot client work and it gets hot AF over here lol. Probably the best camera you can buy for the money
We have shoot the wedding on 09.07.2022 with two A7M4 and both had overheating issues after half an hour of recording - we shoot 4K 60FPS - it is not good for long recording but the footage is amazing
Never had an overheating issue. The most I've used it was at a 2 1/2 hour stretch, indoors with the flippy screen out shooting at 4K 24, 4.2.2. I trust this camera.
I have two and I’ve never had an issue. I also don’t know why a pro would only have one camera. Seems like the redundancy that would come with being pro , would also cover the overheating(that I’ve never dealt with).
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema Think that overheating problem is also related to the high codec included in a small body as the A74’S one. But with an external recorder like the Ninja V, you can easily avoid the overheating since the processor will be less overcharged to deal with codecs 🙃
@@JasonMorrisphotocinemaYes, two cameras is often a must for most people. But it depends on the type of work. I film with two cameras for interviews, etc. But I also do a lot of social justice work - rallies, picket lines, marches. Outside. All sorts of crazy weather. And one camera. No videographer ever brings two cameras to those, even from the big news outlets - and not often Ninjas or dummy batteries either, because you'll likely have to run (or at least walk extremely quickly) with your setup.
OK, so, having read through a lot of the comments, steps to take to prevent overheating include: 1) open the screen, 2) use a dummy battery, 3) record in All-i mode to reduce in-camera processing. How about using an external monitor, like the Ninja V, to record (maybe in ProRes), instead of recording internally? Does that help prevent overheating when shooting very long takes (e.g. events)?
Instead of the A7S III, it might be better to have two a7 IV bodies, that would solve the overheating issue, and allow a dual lens setup in non-demanding circumstances for faster turnaround. But I think the bigger downsides for me are the crop in 4K 60P, and the absence of 4K 120P. Those are really key features and set the A7S III apart in my opinion. I have a Lumix S1, and the change in focal length and exposure is really annoying when going from Full Frame to Super 35 crop
Great Vid. Got me a A7M4 about a year ago. Almost bought the FX3, but since I'm doing about 80% photography (and only as a hobbyist) the A7 is clearly the winner for me
Nice work Jason ;) I did not have any over heating issues with the A7 IV when I had it, but it is clear at this point that extended recording can cause overheating no matter how you have the camera set-up... Not everybody experiences this, but enough have regularly at this point. So for the true Pro video user I would say no, but for a somebody that doesn't need extended recording, it can certainly do the job extremely well. As far as photography goes, yeah it's a pro grade capable camera for sure I would say. Keep up the great work, Jay
Ive had the A7iv for 4 months now. I haven’t had the camera shut off on me. The camera does get alittle hot, not hot enough that you can’t hold it but definitely does feel hot. Not a deal breaker for me yet. The good of this camera outweighs the bad by far.
honestly I was concerned about overheating as well, i specifically wanted a hybrid camera like the A7iv because i do both photo and am getting more into video. Just the other day (early October in NW Oregon) a friend and i shot a wedding. My friend was A cam since he's using the a7siii and i was B cam, we opted to shoot the whole wedding in 4k 60fps and the highest bitrate our cameras can shoot and mind you it was constant shooting of broll in clips of no more than 2 minutes at a time but it was constant. Screen was flipped out and temp set to high and most of the shooting was done outside in about 75 degrees F in sunny weather (warm but not hot, we were still sweating lol). We were both switching between gimbal and handheld the entire time for just about 7 and a half hours and im surprised to say the a7iv was dependable in my experience and never overheated during the whole day. I did however do a few stress tests on the camera 2 weeks prior to see the limitation in 4k 60 fps and i got about 50-55 minute clips of unlimited recording before it actually did overheat. But with how i shoot and in a real world scenario it wouldnt make sense to shoot 4k 60 in long intervals of time for something like an interview or a whole wedding ceremony. it would be better to stick to 4k 30fps or 24fps fro those longer intervals of recording. But I really do hope sony comes out with a recall or a firmware update to help those who i think have cameras from a bad batch. Cheers
I have two a7IV I shoot mostly weddings but really all types of client work real estate, entrepreneurs/small businesses etc and I haven’t had any overheating issues. It did get warm/hot but never overheated.
Having cameras overheat on paid gigs was the reason I bought the a7sIII and later the FX6. I recently bought the a7IV to use as my C cam on a 1 hour concert recording gig next month. I'm disappointed to hear that this camera can potentially overheat. It seemed like the perfect compliment to my other cameras, offering more resolution for stills and more reach with APS-C mode.
The overheating problem on A7IV is pretty easy to solve, just add a small portable fan to it and you are good to have a camera that can last for whole day without problem. But for the lack of resolution, slower usb speed, lack of USB streaming, no auto shutter off on A7SIII or FX3 are hardware problems and there is no way you can fix them As for the lack of 4K 120 fps under A7IV, I will shoot HD 120p crop mode (for clearer image) and upscale it to 4K, it looks almost as good as 4K footage. For the rolling shutter problem on A7IV, I will shoot at crop mode, then there will be hardly any noticeable rolling shutter. Therefore, I still love my A7IV as I know how to work around its weaknesses.
i like my a7iv when it isn't overheating but the a7siii just simply works without hindering your workflow without a crop and WORSE low light is aps-c mode (60fps & to reduce rolling shutter). That was my experience when using the a7iv as my main camera to see if I can sell the a7siii for extra cash with the chip shortage & lack of a7siii stock. For that reason my a-cam is the a7siii.
The reason I had to buy the a7 iv was because of the new MacBook Pro M1 laptop. I was gonna wait for the a7s 4, but it was the perfect time to buy the new MacBook so then I went ahead and just preordered the a 7 iv. I’m thankful for Sony because it seems like they like to give instead of put crippling limitations, understandably. So, experiencing Focus breathing compensation, 4K 4.2.2 10bit video in H.265 and smooth active stabilization, and most importantly the customizable buttons and dials, good enough battery life, slog3, I think even the premature overheating message was put there by Sony to make other camera companies feel good. Sony also advertises this camera as “Beyond basic” and the name “Hybrid” is very suitable! Looking forward to new lenses and cameras coming soon, very happy and satisfied being invested in the Sony eco system!
Great video! I am looking into doing wildlife photography as a hobby....do you have any recommendations for a hybrid camera that would be good for a newbie such as myself?
im using A7IV as a pro for a very long time now, I also used A7III and still can get everything done with the oldie. And I will still say that they're mainly photography focused cameras, video is an additon. For video in sony lineup we have video-centric bodies. Also Sony know exactly what are they doing, we will never get a EVERY CHECKMARK CAMERA on the market.
The image of this camera is phenomenal. I own a xt4 and I’m so torn what I prefer more. The a7iv is excellent in low light with a full frame lens like that 24-70 f2.8 samyang and clean in high ISO if you know what you’re doing. First time I got the camera I was shooting slog 3 at 12,800 iso and it produced a lot of grain which cleared up once you put a lut on it. The camera has to be set up properly for you to enjoy it.
I’ve had my A74 overheat on set (granted it was a theatre set with hot spotlights). My camera was in a teleprompter setup with the auto shutoff set to “standard”, and a Ninja V hooked up. Without even recording, the temperature warning came up. Once I started recording after a few minutes it shut off on me. Luckily, I switch the auto shutoff to “high” and the issue was gone. Do I worry about it in the future? Yes. Is there a part of me that wants to return it for a more reliable camera? Yes. I spent a lot of money on this camera and I expect it to perform as desired, but my only other option is spending more for an A7SIII or FX3. In quite the pickle
I recently shot a soccer team training session with my Sony a7iv in 4k60 in direct sunlight and never had an issue. I did get sunburned though. Video on my channel.
I'm starting to wonder if continuous autofocus is contributing to the overheating issues people are having. The first youtube report was from a guy who said he was just adjusting the settings and looking at the menus. Well, the autofocus is still operating.. And its working overtime trying to focus on your lap as your handle the camera looking at menus. I've noticed mine get hot while doing the same thing.
This also happened to me.. When I was setting the menu on the a7iv (lens facing down on a mat) the camera shuts off after about 20mins - 30mins (not recording & temp already set to high). I notice the cont af was on. But on a shoot (mainly video, 4k xavc-s 30fps) the camera never overheats. It's hot but never overheats (no temp symbol). I rarely use cont af. I shoot motorsport, car restoration and vlogs on a daily. It seems fine running on prograde v90 cards. Btw I live in SEA. It's hot here 😅
Truthfully, I fear the overheating as well. I hope they can fix this in firmware. I've had it overheat while just using hdmi out while connected to an ATEM mini, not even recording.
You mentioned using dummy batteries. Can you please make a video explaining what batteries you would use? I use wired dummy batteries, however if there's a semi wireless option id love to see. I know sony has a battery extension kit, but I've only seen 1 dummy batteries for Z batteries so far.
Thanks for the video. This makes me worried a bit. Seems like I'll use a7S III as the main "continuous" video camera for weddings, and A7 IV as for video short clips and photos. Both used together with two people.
Danny Boyle shot 28 days on a Canon Xl1 -(Not considered a pro camera by uneducated camera snobs) Cinematic storytelling is about creativity, not the latest gear. Buy whatever gives you a voice. How loud or quiet you are is up to you!
I am no pro. Tried to record an event voluntarily but overheated several times. I used v90 card. Are you all using any better card to stop overheating ? Also any settings to increase tolerable heat setting ?
@jason morris what happens if it connects to a ninja v, will it continue to overheat? a serious videographer works with an external monitor that has a better codec, I would like to know if the ninja would eliminate this problem. Don't forget to mention it next time. Good job!
nice video. love it ! I am mostly a photographer who needs a run and gun camera for video. As an hybrid shooter, I cannot consider a A7s3 or FX3 to be honest. 12MP is just too low and offers little to no flexibility. It also don't allow large prints (I did try the A7s, and A7sII). The A7IV seems like a perfect camera for mix workflow. 33MP is just about right to get sharp images from most contemporary lenses.
I agree and completely understand what you say, I went with the A7IV as well, but in all honesty , it depends on what you do, "pro" is so relative, if all you do is social media posts, then 12mp is more than adequate, not sure why these "this camera is not pro" "this camera is pro" titles (I know some or most are clickbait) exist besides that, you can use older generations of equipment for producing "pro" content for more than happy clients, it's the indian, not the arrow, as they saying goes...
@@kineticdanceacademylacey7541 You can definitely make great photo and pro content with a 12mp. But there is some limitation: 1. Limited cropping: Can't crop much on 12mp, which reduce versatility. 2. Many sony glasses have a lot of resolving power - so it is a bit of a shame to be wasting good quality glasses with a low MP sensor (on the plus size, legacy lenses might look better than on high MP cameras) 3. Low light could be an argument, but higher MP camera provide really good SNR on BSI sensor. 4. A7IV or 24mp+ now often an asp-c mode for their video settings, literally offering two different focal length for a single fast prime lens. But yes it all depends on the use case. Personally 20MP is probably the minimum I could work with. I personally use the GFX100s as my main camera, and the A7IV as my bcam and run and gun (to replace my Q2).
Start to use it to shoot surf videos competition, with a 150-600mm Sigma sport lens, super 35 give you 900mm and a great tracking autofocus to dream of. Heating not an issue.
This is from an Indian Living in an " Indian " Environment ( base temperature being 30°C - 35°C ) , This camera can easily overheat if it's not under air conditioner or in a chill environment if it's in an environment where there is no proper air conditioning. I have got Overheating while doing 4K 30p even yes it was after past the 30 min mark of rocking the camera on a gimbal but still it has overheating. It's a given.
Hey Jason, hey everyone, I just had to come back and comment after my Quinceañera gig this past Saturday. Hear me out; I feel like the sony a7iv update helped with the overheating. I did a whole day Quinceañera event using 3 of my sony a7iv cameras, 2 for strictly 4k60 video and one strictly for photography. I was really nervous because the weather was 108 degrees fahrenheit in the California Central Valley. I am really glad to say that I had no problem at all, not even once did I get an overheating warning. I shot a 50 minute non-stop ceremony and then a 38 minute non-stop both at 4k60 with absolutely no problem. My wife an I were both sweating like hell, but the cameras did a great job keeping up. We did set umbrellas on top of the cameras just to keep sun light from hitting them directly, but trust me, it was still very hot and humid. I Just had to come back and say this. I now feel very confident about the Sony a7iv cameras and you should too.
I have sony a7iv i bought it 1 month ago on my 1st shoot it did overheat alot but after changing some settings that you gave.. the problem is pretty much solved & as a cinematographer i don't shoot continusely i take few secs of shots so the a7iv doesn't heat if I'm in good room temperature. Now i can't afford sony a7siii and i take stills too so sony a7iv is the best option for me ! i really love this camera ! I hope the overheating will be solved in firmware update if it did then i would like to buy one more a7iv if it doesn't so I'll buy a7siii and put a7iv for my Camera B. I love your content and your reels too Love from India ❤️🇮🇳
Man awesome video, I have been tormented between buying the A7iv for hybrid shooting or spending way more than I can afford on the fx3, this video was so informative. Thank you guys and keep killing ish 💯
Great Video Jason, I absolutly agree to you as I use an A7IV as a B-camera on a Ronin-S beside my FX6 like you do because of its great professional video and photo quality. It depends in what you are shooting and for normal use it is absolute relieable! I just had one overheating problem yet when shooting a performance in 1080p25 with the monitor shut and a bluetooth connection to my mobile phone. After 80 minutes the A7IV turned off due to overheating...
@@williebravousa I had used external power and no battery, but the monitor was shut... Since I leave it open, I never have had overheating problems anymore. And by the way, I'm older than you with 35 years of film making experience, kid!
I’ve been using Sony Video Cameras for absolutely years and have noticed when I first got a Nex 7 camera for photos I didn’t particularly like the results. When Sony came out with the A6000 APSC camera I shot some video with it and apart from the fact it had no stabilisation the quality was in my view quite good . I’ve since gone through the range of FullFrame Alpha cameras and Lenses including GM lenses and my opinion is that the video quality of these cameras have got worse .Yes the choice of all the various autofocus modes have increased and all the gimmicks and bells and whistles have increased the image quality has deteriorated.I have made a test reel project on FCP which I add to every time I get a new camera and have noticed that at best it would be difficult to say there is any real improvement in the overall quality if anything it’s slightly worse .I have an 8 k tv 85 inch and it’s the same story viewing the transcribed file on my tv as on my iMac Pro . I had the A74 for a while and I didn’t know if I had a bad unit but found the colour science strange and not sharp using the FE24 mm GM l.4 lens . I purchased the A7R 5 and photo wise it’s better but video about the same . I had the first 4K Sony Commercial 4K video camera the AX100E with a 1inch censor and the picture quality is far better in my eyes . I’m not one of these lovers of dark or over bright movies . I think Sony are giving you so many different unnecessary options that before I start filming I’m never sure if I have the right settings . I now believe that most of Sony cameras are over hyped by UA-cam reviewers and are really quite disappointing in reality .
in Josh case of the camera over heating in certain situations but not being unable to reproduce the overheating. I wonder if it overheats faster in real world use when the camera needs more energy/heat to perform AF functions, eye AF ect. But in a controlled setting with less changes it probably can last much longer. just a guess
Hey Jason! Great video once again! I do still have one issue that is maybe not specific to the A7IV, to which I hope you might have an answer for. On certain rare run and gun occasions I still use AWB in video and it’s set to a shockless setting, but that makes it respond terribly slow. When I point my camera at a scene it takes about 5-10 seconds for the white balance to adjust. Is there any way to make it quicker without having to sacrifice a smooth WB transition?
I was considering selling my a7s3 and buying the a74 but I’ve decided not to do so. Regarding sharpness, I always turn it down in camera anyway bc too much looks weird to me. More MPX dsnt matter too much bc I mainly only post on socials media. The only thing I rlly miss is apsc mode. Selling my a7s3 for $3k and then buying a new a74 for $2.5k PLUS Taxes turns out almost the same. Not worth it rn for me
memory card heating up could also be the culprit of overheating (I know on my sony a7sii I never had it overheat in the 7 years ive used it. but I regularly change batteries and memory cards)
i use an a72 is it worth really upgrading to a73 seeing as you say this one not so great for filming fx6 well over budget unless I come into loads of cash. Also my content currently is lower light and run and gun Blair witch style
It's interesting with the overheating. We've got someone shooting out in Israel at the moment and he hasn't had any overheating issues however when I did an interview back here in the UK the other day it did start to overheat after 40 minutes. Maybe it's airflow rather than ambient temperature that matters.
In what setting do you record video? 4K 60? Im thinking about buying one but I’m contemplating if this camera is good to use for video for weddings on hot summer days.
If you are a video shooter the A7S3 should be the right option for you. It cost a thousand dollars more but provides a bunch of benefits for video shooters. A74 is a great all-around camera for travelers, UA-camrs, and hybrid content creators.
I did have it overheat on a shoot but I think I still had it at standard. Was a bit annoying to have to wait for it to cool down (and was colder out so I brought it outside) but luckily it was a RE video shoot with just me there.
I had an overheat issue on set not too long ago. Only in 4K though. Lost an angle because it kept overheating for 4k24 footage. I have no issues in 1080p but I can’t trust it for 4K on set. My a7siii has never overheated ever. I bought the a7iv to be a b cam to the a7siii but it’s been a little bit of a let down.
Hello Jason. I am a wedding & portrait photographer using canon gear for several years now planning to shift to Sony mirroless A7 4. What is your suggestion. Is it good for photography like skintones and colours. Please suggest.
It may be just my set up, but I've found the focus tracking very unpredictable, especially on water. It will zero in on a flickering wave completely out of the range of the actual subject. The viewfinders are very low res and never look truly sharp.
I want to upgrade from my GH5, and was leaning towards this, but I often shoot 2+ hour events, often outside. And I don't get to shut my camera off. Maybe not such a good idea for me? Also, Jason, have you had the A7Siii? I hear that the A7siii, is grainy in that mid-low light most people would shoot in. And Sony seems to have abandoned it, in terms of firmware upgrades. Don't know what to do.
@@BogeeDee I got the A7IV. So did two other videographers I know. Because of the down sampling from 7k, customization, and better noise-free low light. The Sony A7Siii can film in lower light, but from reviews, was grainy-er. I will get the Sony A7SIV or A7V when it comes out. And am getting impatient waiting for Sony to get their act together. But other than the cropped 4k60, and lack of 4k120, I love my Sony A7IV
did the overheating still go on? or maybe Sony make an improvement with the updated software? but while I'm using a7iv and put it on high temperature, it still runs but the camera body is hot. That was the scariest part while working on a7iv. I hope someone still update a new information for a7iv, because a7iv is my main camera.
Hey Jason, What is your personal experience with the overheating on this camera? I am also in Brisbane and worried about those hot summer days in the sun, but I would only ever be recording 4k 60p in short bursts, maybe 4k 25 for longer form sequences
Hey I’m just getting started getting new Equipment and I was thinking about getting the A7IV I do photography and video Is there any other cameras you my recommend to look into
I've had it over heat on first use filming a wrestling event at 4k 24p 10bit 4:2:2, but tried to replicate it sitting on my sofa watching and it ran until it ran out of batteries, then I swapped more in and it just kept going to the point I got bored testing... I haven't tested it since using the new firmware as borrowed a friends Ninja V to use instead
Does the overheating occur with the external v-mount battery though? Never had this issue when using V-mount... Also, Id assume sony will release a new cine model soon that doesnt have these issues.
I currently have a A7iii I do mainly video and some photography on the side. I really want the 10 bit color of the A7siii and A7iv, I don't have a lot of money so do you think going with the a7iv and saving $1000 would be a good Idea if I already have the a7iii or should I just wait longer and save up for the a7siii?
Canon R5 specifications and features are ideal hybrid camera for me. It's my dream that Sony will have a new hybrid model at same features and price range as R5 without heat problem,
hello sir , as you said the best quality as per a7iv given and while you use them that cause create heat, but while i shoot i didn't even use full configuration then even it starts heat, and same as while i captured photos... what should i do..

I've used the a74 multiple times recently for long periods of time in a professional setting and haven't had any overheating issues. I wonder if there is a bad batch out there. Side note, I shot in 4k 60p and 24p in the highest quality the camera allows.
Great vid man, thanks for having me on!!
I chose A7iv over A7siii due to the overheating issue. but no luck, I’m still having this overheating issue with my A7iv.
@@ThePistonPit Overall the camera is good.. Just the overheat issue only.
@@cristos82 you believe it will ever get better?
@@cristos82
Better than the S5 excluding the auto focus?
Hi Jason, Josh, Chris,
Good to see you all in one video and keeping it real!
Am using both Canon and Sony as I’ve been trying to find a hybrid one body cam.
I can share my experience using the Canon R5 and here’s how I’ve been dealing with it:
1) firstly, Canon put 3 barriers, most likely to protect their cinema line. 1 is legitimate, the other 2 are crippling:
- Legit: camera is shooting at high frame rates and for a long time and so to protect the longevity and other components, it shuts down. This is good for longevity but not reliable for professional paid work;
- Non-legit 1: 30min limit recording time. As a one person operator, this is another long list to worry about. The excuse of Euro tax went away awhile ago and Sony and Pana has had unlimited recording for past 2-3yrs+ (2+ for Sony and 3+ for Pana);
- Non-legit 2: artificial timer which through several firmware updates, have improved it but still there even when it is not hot enough to warrant shutting down. Their response is being conservative like the speed limit when cars can go faster but most components are made to commercial and industrial temperatures so I don’t buy this one bit
Having said that, I would break it up to short and long form recordings and the workarounds that I think will apply to Sony or any cameras that overheat as we cannot overcome thermal physics. Make a body that is small and water or weather proof, heat will be trapped and cannot escape so overheating will occur.
For short form, you can:
- No modification required: Use Tilta fan that is quite clever and it will cool down the backside where the LCD is located and in R5, the sensor where a lot of heat is generated. Also as Jason mentioned, the other two heat generated are the battery which I use dummy battery with external power. The other one is the memory cards (writing data to card);
- Modification to body with passive cooling: Kolari Vision can make a mod to R5 for under $500 that doubles the recording times but removes your warranty. I haven’t had time to stop and send this in but planning to do it when I can spare some down time;
- I haven’t tried using a battery grip to see if there is more surface area to alleviate heat to release;
- I do make it a habit to turn on and off the R5 when not recording to give it time to cool down
- Net/net: I get more than double the recording time published by Canon for the R5. Plenty for run and gun short form
Long form recording:
- Use an external recorder like the Ninja 5/5+ or other ones to bypass the processing workload required on high frame rate and/or long recording times
Alternatively, when it doe overheat as I do forget to keep track of it all, I simply move from 4K HQ (8K oversampled to 4K) modes to 4K standard mode (with no artificial timer but still 30min recording limit), and I can keep recording without shutting down. Just turn up the saturation to try to match colors with 4K HQ mode.
Now I have the A74 coming in a couple weeks and will make tests to see the limits and workarounds.
Good luck and looking forward to more of your A74 contents!
legend! always good to have you on. EVERYONE SUBSCRIBE TO HIS CHANNEL ;)
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema Thank you Jason!
So I dont see any problem with overheating with the A74.
unfortunately it still does for me and lots of others
I also trust the camera. Thanks for sharing
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema so you trust it or you don't? This is getting confusing....
I have two and I’ve never had an issue. I also don’t know why a pro would only have one camera. Seems like the redundancy that would come with being pro , would also cover the overheating(that I’ve never dealt with).
I absolutely agree. Personally I have never had issues either and having two cameras as a professional is almost a must IMO
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema Think that overheating problem is also related to the high codec included in a small body as the A74’S one. But with an external recorder like the Ninja V, you can easily avoid the overheating since the processor will be less overcharged to deal with codecs 🙃
sounds like fantasy to me too..
Almost bought the FX3, but since I'm doing about 80% photography (and only as a hobbyist) the A7 is clearly the winner for me
I’ve not had any overheating issues 3 months in. No problem with eye focus either. I love it.
great to drop your experience. thank you! I have also had no issues
I’m looking at the A7IV mostly for photograph, but also to make B-roll footage/small clips. Would you recommend this camera for those 2 things?
Hey bro i also wanna buy A7 iv and wanna know which lens should i buy and is it even worth to buy a7iv?
Great video! I liked hearing multiple insights in one vid. I personally havent had any overheating issues so far!
honestly I was concerned about overheating as well, i specifically wanted a hybrid camera like the A7iv because i do both photo and am getting more into video.
But for the lack of resolution, slower usb speed, lack of USB streaming, no auto shutter off on A7SIII or FX3 are hardware problems and there is no way you can fix them
As for the lack of 4K 120 fps under A7IV, I will shoot HD 120p crop mode (for clearer image) and upscale it to 4K, it looks almost as good as 4K footage. For the rolling shutter problem on A7IV, I will shoot at crop mode, then there will be hardly any noticeable rolling shutter.
Therefore, I still love my A7IV as I know how to work around its weaknesses.
Thank u for ur insight
i like my a7iv when it isn't overheating but the a7siii just simply works without hindering your workflow without a crop and WORSE low light is aps-c mode (60fps & to reduce rolling shutter). That was my experience when using the a7iv as my main camera to see if I can sell the a7siii for extra cash with the chip shortage & lack of a7siii stock. For that reason my a-cam is the a7siii.
I use the A7 IV on weddings on a Caribbean island and have never got overheat on me
Awesome video! Great to see some other creators collaborating on this content!
Absolutely bro. Think it is about time you're back on this channel!!!
Fix overheat with the last firmware. It gets really hot, but don't turn off.
Thanks Jason. Much more useful than a straight comparison. Appreciated.
Seen a video of yours a couple of years ago. Came across you again now.
Bro, those GAINS :) well done.
Isn't 800 and 3200 ISO on the A7iv the two native ( clean ) to use with S log 3 ?
It's hot here 😅
For me as a hybrid shooter A7 IV is a great camera for both videos and photos.

I am no pro. Tried to record an event voluntarily but overheated several times. I used v90 card. Are you all using any better card to stop overheating ? Also any settings to increase tolerable heat setting ?
I use type A cards. Make sure you follow all protocols. Screen flipped out, overheating temp turned to high, cycle camera on and off between filming
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema Thanks Jason. So nice of you
@jason morris what happens if it connects to a ninja v, will it continue to overheat? a serious videographer works with an external monitor that has a better codec, I would like to know if the ninja would eliminate this problem.
But there is some limitation:
1. Limited cropping: Can't crop much on 12mp, which reduce versatility.
2. Many sony glasses have a lot of resolving power - so it is a bit of a shame to be wasting good quality glasses with a low MP sensor (on the plus size, legacy lenses might look better than on high MP cameras)

Great Video Jason,
I absolutly agree to you as I use an A7IV as a B-camera on a Ronin-S beside my FX6 like you do because of its great professional video and photo quality. My question is do Chris use a battery grip to stop overheating?
We need a video on your IG exportSettings. They look great
Not worth it rn for me
thanks for your input. Really interesting to see what people have and need the cameras for. A7SIII is an incredible camera
Brilliant stuff as always! Thanks!
memory card heating up could also be the culprit of overheating (I know on my sony a7sii I never had it overheat in the 7 years ive used it. but I regularly change batteries and memory cards)
i use an a72 is it worth really upgrading to a73 seeing as you say this one not so great for filming fx6 well over budget unless I come into loads of cash. Also my content currently is lower light and run and gun Blair witch style
I have one but it never overheated with me even though i use it all day long ... I live in a hot environment
It's interesting with the overheating.
We've got someone shooting out in Israel at the moment and he hasn't had any overheating issues however when I did an interview back here in the UK the other day it did start to overheat after 40 minutes.
Maybe it's airflow rather than ambient temperature that matters.
I think it is sensitive to airflow. If I blow on the back of the camera for like 20 seconds the high temp warning goes away
I live in the Indian ocean, on La Réunion, my a7iv camera never overheated, maybe Sony changed something along the product life.
In what setting do you record video? 4K 60? Im thinking about buying one but I’m contemplating if this camera is good to use for video for weddings on hot summer days.
The full phrase is “a jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.”
I’ve never had an overheating problem shooting 4k 4:2:2 10bit ever.
Which lense is best for wedding photography and video graphy.. Sony A7iv..???
What brand cage are you using
If you are a video shooter the A7S3 should be the right option for you. It cost a thousand dollars more but provides a bunch of benefits for video shooters.
A74 is a great all-around camera for travelers, UA-camrs, and hybrid content creators.
It’s not as simple as that unfortunately. The a7iv has many other benefits against the a7siii than the higher frame rate
I'm looking for a hybrid camera to make short films/reels at both 24/30fps and also for photography, Should I get a Sony A7IV?
I did have it overheat on a shoot but I think I still had it at standard. Was a bit annoying to have to wait for it to cool down (and was colder out so I brought it outside) but luckily it was a RE video shoot with just me there.
ANy overheating since turning it to high?
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema not yet! We’ll see as we get into the warmer months and then summer here though.
Which Camara you use for shooting this video
I had an overheat issue on set not too long ago. Only in 4K though. Lost an angle because it kept overheating for 4k24 footage. I have no issues in 1080p but I can’t trust it for 4K on set. My a7siii has never overheated ever. I bought the a7iv to be a b cam to the a7siii but it’s been a little bit of a let down.
I see this video is one year old. Has Sony released a firmware update so this camera doesn’t overheat anymore?
Hello Jason. I am a wedding & portrait photographer using canon gear for several years now planning to shift to Sony mirroless A7 4. What is your suggestion. Is it good for photography like skintones and colours. Please suggest.
It may be just my set up, but I've found the focus tracking very unpredictable, especially on water. It will zero in on a flickering wave completely out of the range of the actual subject. The viewfinders are very low res and never look truly sharp.
The overheating aspect of the Sony A74 is bothering me a bit
What camera would you recommend for streaming (long hours)?
I want to upgrade from my GH5, and was leaning towards this, but I often shoot 2+ hour events, often outside. And I don't get to shut my camera off. Maybe not such a good idea for me? Also, Jason, have you had the A7Siii? I hear that the A7siii, is grainy in that mid-low light most people would shoot in. And Sony seems to have abandoned it, in terms of firmware upgrades. Don't know what to do.
What cam did you bought? I sold my gh5II and choosing right now which to buy.
@@madknac2978 thanks a lot, please tell is 4k60 good quality? I do not care about crop, is it loosing quality?
did the overheating still go on? or maybe Sony make an improvement with the updated software? but while I'm using a7iv and put it on high temperature, it still runs but the camera body is hot. That was the scariest part while working on a7iv. I hope someone still update a new information for a7iv, because a7iv is my main camera.
what is the highest processing codec that you use for the camera?
Hey Jason, What is your personal experience with the overheating on this camera? I am also in Brisbane and worried about those hot summer days in the sun, but I would only ever be recording 4k 60p in short bursts, maybe 4k 25 for longer form sequences
Hey I’m just getting started getting new Equipment and I was thinking about getting the A7IV I do photography and video Is there any other cameras you my recommend to look into
Yo, how's that lens hood called? I was told it might be called a compendium but nothing pops up on Google.
Can you get pro res files using ninja atomos v with the a7iv?
Is this camera good for filming Dj mixes ?
Been looking at the Sony A74
Does the overheating occur with the external v-mount battery though? Never had this issue when using V-mount...
Also, Id assume sony will release a new cine model soon that doesnt have these issues.
When using the Sony A74 I shall be using 1080HD as I have a i5 processor laptop
Oh god, the FX3 doesn't have the Focus Breathing Compensation? That's disappointing
Same situation here 😅
what lens ? did you use ?
Canon R5 specifications and features are ideal hybrid camera for me. It's my dream that Sony will have a new hybrid model at same features and price range as R5 without heat problem,
The Sony A1 is their version to the R5 but it is pricier though.
10:25 which codec specifically do you mean?
hello sir ,
as you said the best quality as per a7iv given and while you use them that cause create heat, but while i shoot i didn't even use full configuration then even it starts heat, and same as while i captured photos... what should i do..
Looking to get one to compliment my a7riv
What should i buy for video content. I've got only under 2600$ for body. I want to buy a7iv but is there any other choices?
Only A7C or A7III. But these are well behind the A7IV
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema so if i can buy a7IV i have to buy it, right?
Can you record prores raw on the A7IV with Atomos Ninja V?
No
