- In this video I talk about remakes for games. In 2023, there were so many remakes for older (better) games and it's a bit concerning. Is the game industry getting a bit stale? Were older games just better?

Remasters are often cash-grabs. Remakes, when done with effort and care, can be excellent.
FF7 remake is probably one of the best games I’ve ever played
Black Mesa is what the prime example of a remake should be. Familiar, but different. The fact that it was made by a small team as a passion project makes it 10x more impressive
a remake should be made when the original games mechanics could benefit from modern technologies. Whether that be graphics or simply weird jank that comes with older games that would benefit from quality of life improvements.
Resident Evil 1 is a huge example of this. The tank controls and fixed camera angles are outdated, and it stops a lot of new fans from experiencing the game that started it all.
If they ever (properly) remake the old Ratchet & Clank games, all I want is the proper stereo mix of the first game's soundtrack.

Remaster doesn’t mean same, it means resolution/frame rate bump, remake is remade. Tlou part 1 is built in the same way, emphasis on built, not augmented from the base model.
Would that not be the definition of an enhanced port though. Wouldn't a remaster increase asset quality and have some game tweaks on top of that.
@@Vicy5ModapkThat's literally what a remaster is, an enhanced port. Enhanced port isn't a thing people say, and if they do, it just sounds like they didn't know that's what a remastered is.
@@IskandarTheWack If it's a remaster, I'd at least expect there to be more changes than just changing 2 settings, hence the difference between port and remaster. For example, I wouldn't call dmc hd collection on ps4 a remaster of dmc hd on ps3 just because of the resolution increase or kingdom hearts 1.5 + 2.5 a remaster of the ps3 collections.

Those are remasters, you not wanting to call it that doesn't change that, they are remasters.
@@IskandarTheWack Pretty sure most people also prefer to have that difference and the fact that the examples i used were ports of remastered games shows why it’s necessary for some distinction to be made. There is clearly a difference between changing 2 settings and adding in higher quality assets and content from later versions of a game. By your logic, running any pc port at a higher resolution and frame rate would make it a remaster, even if the graphic quality is worse than the console version (for example the pc port of one piece pirate warriors 3 being based of the ps3 version but being able to run at higher resolutions). You can even bump up resolution and frame rate with in the same console generation but i’m pretty sure nobody would call those ports remasters. You don’t even need to port a game to increase frame rate and resolution with pro consoles. Ultimately, your definition of a remaster is too broad and you should be a bit more specific.

Majora's Mask is tied for my favorite game of all time. I have %100ed both of the version 3 times each.
MM3D is by far the better version and it's not even close. The QoL is so incredibly helpful that it makes up for all of the remake's faults
id argue the exact opposite personally, for every quality of life improvement they gut an original mechanic from the n64 release to makes it less fun. the masks are my favorite part of the game n the only one doesnt doesnt feel abysmal to use in comparison the the og is the goron form. this is just one example (though one of the biggest). i say this as someone who played the 3ds version first. i dont hate the 3ds version its a fine way to play the game but for me the difference of a good game and a great one. i feel the only way id ever prefer the play the remake is using the restoration mod which provides the best of both worlds and makes the game feel like a true enhancement over the original.
If video games keep getting remake then video game loses it status as form of art because we don't swap components in art like a car or pc part
I've been on a Doom and Wolfenstein kick lately (which is how I found you!) and it's made me think about which old id or Apogee games deserve a reboot. My vote is for Blake Stone.

I think there's a place for remakes that change a lot of stuff as well as remakes that are largely faithful to the original. Things like Ocarina of Time 3D and Metroid Prime Remastered existing means that next time around they can reimagine things. Then we'll have both the faithful remake and the reimagined version.
Same thing with Alan Wake 2. I want it so bad but refuse to spend money on Epic.

and the monkey's paw curled: I think its interesting you mentioned reignited trilogy because as a someone that played the shit out of the original games to hell and back starting in kindergarten all the way through elementary school a remake of any one of the original games was the game i was waiting for my whole life. 1 more good spyro. i would always tell people it was my favorite game series as it was my most played for a time. when the reignited trilogy finally came out i was so disappointed. like it was so messed up actually. there was absolutely zero attempt to try and retain the original art direction and worse yet aside from the dragons and main supporting cast all the enemies and npcs look like unreal market assets. the new voice performance does not attempt to translate over humor from the original game. a lot of cutscenes completely misrepresent the original joke so it doesnt even come across as a joke just a bizarre cut-scene of characters doing weird things. But worst of all the controls are absolutely fucking borked. Do you remember the "SONIC IN UNREAL" videos? the way it looked like sonic just slid around the ground? thats what spyro feels like. sure he has a pretty decent animation. but it doesnt change the fact that it feels like im moving a fortnite character and not a fucking dragon. very painfully an unreal game. and the flight controls are so fucking fucked. The original flight controls and camera were designed by an actual nasa flight engineer. that shit controlled so fucking good in a way i cant describe. its like a guy that's autistic about aeronautics programmed what he thought would be the most fun way to fly. and some dipshit underpaid low gpa CS major thought he could do better than that. its so obvious playing through the trilogy that all the marketing was bullshit and literally nobody at any level on the entire team had played the original series. if anything would/shouldve have been preserved its the original flight controls. and thats just it. thats the end of spyro. youre right about activision never exploring this IP again. but worse then that is that this is spyro now. this is what all future children will remember as spyro. It begs the question. Do you want your favorite game to get remade? kids are tech saavy these days. I think it wouldve been much better for an adventurous middle schooler to seek out an emulator and play the original series that way. How will you feel if a remake does not preserve the experience that you know the game to be. what is the point of remaking a game to bridge generations if people cant even relate in their shared experience. stuff to think about. In the case of spyro there was also no added content at all. But sometimes the overly different experience can be compensated by tons of added content and fanservice. otherwise you run the risk of just ending up with an objectively worse way to experience a game.
Never remakes are boring, just port the original and make reimaginings instead. This way the original is preserved and you can put a spin on an old idea.
I consider games like FF7R, black mesa and Resi 2/4 to be reimaginings rather than remakes.
I consider games that are 1 to 1 remakes to be remakes. Like the last of us part 1, spyro, crash bandicoot, shadow of the colossus ps4.
4:19: There was already a PS4 remaster. They released the same game, with slightly better graphics 3 FUCKING TIMES! And now they are doing it again with TLOU part 2! That game is not even 4 years old!

There was a development company called Spark Unlimited that released two games - Turning Point: Fall of Liberty and Legendary - in 2008. Both were FPS games, both had great ideas, and both got a really bad reception.
Turning Point is set in an alternate 1953, during the German invasion of America. I know Wolfenstein used similar ideas, but the invasion was done by the time we got involved. Turning Point had you right in the middle of the invasion.
Legendary saw you as a thief is sent to steal an artifact that turns out to be Pandora's Box. It gets opened and evil is released into the world, in the form of a variety of mythological creatures.
Those are game I would love to see remade. I still like both, but I have to admit they have more than their share of issues.
For me:
-Games from the PS2 era and below (especially those from the early 3D era) need remakes
-Games from PS3 and onwards can generally stand to just get a remaster
I also believe that there should be a strong desire for the game to be remade or at the very least some acclaim to the game in the first place.
While I enjoyed the Spyro and crash remakes, there was something magical about playing the ps1 games and seeing the graphics and gameplay improve over time with each game.
Okay? Spyro was one of my first games on PS1 and I played the first 2 before Year of the Dragon came out and I still enjoy the remake over the original. This isn't even criticism, it just sounds like "I played it back in the day". The remake is better in almost every regard and the beauty of it is you can still go back and play the originals if you want to be a little hipster.
@@BrandonPoirierBlair I guess I am a hipster haha. I just think about the leap forward from crash 1 to crash 2 with the animations crash had. Even just his running animation was so improved. I enjoyed the remakes, just have nostalgia for watching them evolve over time. Happy new year ya grinch.
All I want is a ps4 or 5 port of the sly cooper trilogy in HD. I bought my ps3 copy digitally because it was cheaper than the physical but now I gotta worry about the ps3 servers shutting down in the future. So in 20 years if I feel like playing one of my favourite gaming trilogies of all time, I guess I’m outta luck 😢
Games that can actually benefit from remakes are the ones that should be remade. Flawed or janky older games especially. Not games that were already great and are still fun to play years later, RE4 2005.
I'd like to see remakes for Code Veronica or especially Dino Crisis. And given how lame most AAA FPS games are lately? Boiling Point: The Road to Hell would be interesting to see remade with today's tech.
Star Fox Assault
Old: came out around 2004 to 2005. CHECK!
Playability: came out around the same time as RE4 so tank controls for the on foot sections. The duel stick option is also kind of jank. The ratio of on foot and arwing gameplay could have been handled better. CHECK!
Accessibility: Been stuck on the game cube since its release. The only other way to get it is by tracking down a copy which is not easy. Emulation of the game exists but nintendo wouldn't care about that. CHECK!
Bandai namco working on a remake of an old nintendo game and them recently renewing Star Fox in Brazil. Hopium is strong with this one

Spyro 4 and Ratchet and Clank 1-3 Remade would be amazing, plz and ty game designers.
I would give a game a decade or so before it’s remade. It’s also important to know if what’s being remade can be improved.
For a while, I was convinced I was one of the only people that believed Hi-Fi Rush was a top 5 game this year. I know everyone liked it, but the fact it wasn't a well known IP, hyped up for years leading to release made it seem "small" or lesser than other games.
But after seeing all of Digital Foundry's guys put it in their top games lists, I started to see many people recognized how awesome it was! Now to stumble across this video & hear you say it should've been a GOTY nominee? Hell yeah man!

Truth is.... the game (awards) were rig from the start.
The EA Skate games could definitely use a remake. This is mainly because the only way to play them on modern consoles is to buy an Xbox plus, there's no native PC versions.
I think why we got so many remakes this year is because the ps3 era is nostalgic now

I disagree that age should be a metric as to whether a game should be remade or not. I totally get that majority of old games would be incompatible for modern conveniences in gaming but if that is to be the case then every single retro game in existence is in line for the remake treatment. That would mean hypothetically RDR 2 would be remade decades down the line due to its "age" which is ridiculous.
If a classic game like Metal Gear Solid or Ocarina of Time was acclaimed for its playability in the late 90s then its a playable game in general. Judging retro games by modern standards does not necessarily result in a work of better artistic quality (Case in point; Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes including MGS 2 elements in MGS 1, breaking the game as a result).
Also yes give us a Ratchet and clank trilogy remaster, port, remake Ill take anything at this point (that's not the 2016 reboot)

I think a remake should solely exist to either replace the old game, or just make a completely new experience out of an established world like with FF7. And you might bat an eye when I say completely replace, thinking I mean to throw out the original and all of it's history. Not quite, I wouldn't tell you to throw out the original Mona Lisa to make way for a copy made with better quality brushes and paint, but I'd probably tell you the new one is the one I'd want framed in my house to look at. All games are a work of art, but more than that, they are an experience that's meant to be enjoyed. Not everyone's a history buff and is willing to play a game at it's worst, so if you're willing to make it look pretty and smooth out all the kinks to make a better experience, great! But when you start remaking games that are already good and start messing with it's fundamentals, tossing them out like outdated trash, that's where I have a problem. I don't blame anyone for calling RE4 remake a better version of the old game, but as someone who appreciates the first game and the way it plays and the way it looks, I have to call out the remake for not doing a proper job. It's not an entirely different game like with FF7 remake, and it's not the OG game but better, it's just different. Why? Why did you have to change a good game so much that it practically spits in the face of the designers who made that game play the way it did? I'll tell you why, and it's not for anything artistic, it's just for money. I'm not gonna sit here and tell you it was a cash grab game, it's not on the level of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD, it's not a game that fundamentally ruins everything that made the first game good, it and all remakes of it's ilk just take a game and make it more geared towards modern standards, even when there was barely anything wrong with the game in the first place.

Dead space 1 & 2 has many optimization issues even for a mid spec PC and remaking a game with 4k resolution and RTX just alienates people who have avarage PC, It's almost as if they remade dead space only for rich guys who can spend money on system. That's why I love RE4 remake it is truly optimised for every PC low to high end. Anyone can enjoy it
I agree with black mesa I have played hl1 before black mesa but didn't finish it but I played all the way through black mesa because I'm more familiar with the source engine , I played through hl2 and it's episodes before ever touching anything with the first game
RE4 and Dead Space Remakes were amazing. I hope we get more remakes in the future for games that are at least 15 years old.
I would take a new indie game with fresh ideas over a remake any day.

A game like Banjo Kazooie deserves a remake it hasn't had a entry since and a remake is well deserved for my favorite Bear and Bird.
Thankfully some of the older games are easy enough to emulate, we're at the point where PS3 games arent that bad to run on middle of the road hardware, including upscaling resolution and such. Try the original Ratchet games that way sometime as well.
Bethesda: Hm should we remake an old classic for modern gen consoles like fallout 1 and 2 or the early elder scrolls? Nah, Skyrim for the PS6! It's not ever out yet but be the first to buy it with new exclusive DLC we didn't copy from a mod

ive been playing re4 and i love it but i dont think it should have been nominated for goty since its a remake, you might as well nominate the original re4
I think one aspect you skipped over are the graphics, games like the resident evil 4 remake gave the old game a much needed new coat of paint, making jt look all new and shiny again. While resident evil 4 2005 is a maaterpiece you cant deny that the game graphics wise hadnt aged the best, and that is something remakes/remasters can do.

Complicated comment incoming. I agree that Last of Us didn't need a remake. But they did add some nice accessibility options and some graphical changes. But I still completely agree, the gameplay is still pretty much the same, if you played the original there's pretty much no point to buy it, unless your a diehard fan of it.

So far remakes like RE 4 and Dead Space have been good but I am afraid that many other developers would want to try this without much care just for cash grab and become a new trend instead of getting new IPs.
