- Gauteng residents using Joburg City Power’s prepaid meters will face a new recurring fee of R200 for network and service charges per month. This charge will apply to all customers except those registered as indigent, earning below R6,000 per month.
General Manager for Tariffs at City Power Frank Hinda gives more details.

I sometimes use electricity of about R200 a month. This is a lot of money and doesn't make sense what we are paying for
But, if it happens that you only buy R200 electricity for the month and they split the money, will you owe the difference from last month in the next months.
Is it a R2400.00 per annum divided by 12 months mandatory subscription?

I, as a prepaid consumer, was never informed of this proposed surcharge. Total bullshit!!
It seems as if these individuals missed the news on what is happening in Kenya, or they just testing people's patience.
And they're still gonna increase tariffs by over 30% per kw.

This daylight robbery. To have to pay to access every month is going to push the cost of electricity sky high. The same happened with the ANC when they took power. Road construction and maintenance came out of every Rand spent on fuel. Now, you pay at the toll gate but your options of a secondary route often don't exist.
Post apartheid City Power never constructed the electrical infrastructure, they inherited it but...they still couldn't make a profit. The former government always made a profit, even on low electricity rates. This is going to put a lot of users in the dark. I suppose Rand Water will be next to rip off the public for rhe same reason.
Why not get independant and boycott both and push their management onto the streets!

We are paying customers. Now the city wants us to cover cost of people who not paying for electricity. The squatter camps must also pay for electricity. It's unfair that we should carry their bills.

The illegal connections I know in informal settlements are mostly by my dear South Africans who are sick and tired. Foreigners are not the primary problem anyway. We South Africans are very capable of such intricate and complicated doings because we have to survive. Blaming a foreign neighbour won't fix the foolish government that we have.
