Okay so, I was diagnosed with aspergers syndrome but recently they stopped diagnosing people with that well at least here. Or I think so. Why is this?

xSwag_Tadx 00 I was speaking with an expert recently and she mentioned that there is very little support for those diagnosed with aspergers. So by having a wider diagnosis they may be able to access more supports. That is true for the country I live in. New Zealand 😁

xSwag_Tadx 00 Are you from the US? I'm from the US and they stopped diagnosing Aspergers here and instead have included it as a subtype of autism. If you have Aspergers you are basically just considered "on the spectrum"

When I was a kid, my dad would accuse me of not listening and yell at me to look at him when he was talking to me. I hated it! I hated the yelling, the accusations of bad behavior, and having to look at people.
I tried to tell him that it was harder for me to concentrate on his words if I was concentrating on looking at him. He never understood. Never.

@@pyrettablaze2369 My dad isn't a bad man but he'd do the same thing. Just doesn't understand. Disciplining a child and spanking and yelling at them are different. When a child is being yelled at they're in a state where they can't process things that are being told to them (don't quote me on that, I forgot some of the details).

    England.
    I used to toe-walk, especially when bare-foot.
It took me a long time to learn to ride a bike, because I just couldn't balance on it.
I used to play with Lego a lot as a child and build tall towers, before knocking them down and then building another tall tower. Plus, take my other toys to pieces in order to discover how they worked, before failing at putting them back together again.
I can never deal with eye contact, noisy/busy places and I don't really like physical contact at all. I prefer to stay in my home and away from the problems, otherwise I suffer crushing levels of anxiety, panic attacks, depression, sudden unexpected emotional responses - from bursting into tears to bursting out in rage.
When I was a child I don't think anybody knew about Asperger's and I wasn't diagnosed until I was 35, because I went looking for answers.
I was the eccentric child, the moody teenager and the complicated adult. I am an aspie...or maybe an alien.

My son has just been diagnosed with Aspergers/ASD I’m so relieved. I was always confused about his day to day behaviour. I had to highlight this to the teachers who were always dismissive. It’s taken me 9 years to go back and forth and finally get this diagnosis. I hope we can fully support and understand him now. I’m going to do all I can to support him

I want to thank you for your very in depth descriptions. I regularly re-visit your videos, and hang on every word, particularly this one because as an adult, I was diagnosed with AS and it was as if someone opened a door with lights on... information came flooding in and all the difficulties and shame I experienced from childhood on- suddenly made sense. I've been able to make peace with myself- replacing the negative self talk with forgiveness, and it's helped me heal. I refer your videos to people I know in hopes that they may understand my struggle- that I'm not being "weird" or "stupid", but that I legitimately struggle with what NT people take for granted.

I absolutely love how you explain how to pick up on signs of children with Aspergers. My son has Aspergers he is 8 years old and at first I didn’t even pick up on the signs I just loved him for who he was. When I first noticed was when he spoken a lot of words and it stop all of a sudden. Then realize he was not looking in my eyes then walked on his tippy toes. I taught him sign language while he was no longer using his words which helped a lot with meltdowns he had a way of communicating. Then with therapy he started talking at 4 years old. Like you sad about repeating things that he enjoys is a constant lol like he LOVES trains and anything Japanese. He can count to 10 in Japanese. He also LOVES Battle bots and monsters trucks. He does a line up of his monster trucks all the time! Thank you so much for these helpful videos for me to understand more about Aspergers.

I can't begin to thank you for this video. For 16 years, my son was misdiagnosed and pumped full of meds to treat BiPolar disorder and a slew of other disorders. At 17, he was finally diagnosed with Asperger's. I am now seeing the same characteristics in my daughter (6). Both had the inability to maintain eye contact, both were 'tiptoe' walkers, both couldn't read social cues and would drone on and on about the weirdest topics. Now, I know. I have been pushing relentlessly for a second opinion for my daughter as 'experts' have ruled out ASD. I disagree and after this video, I'm going to push even harder for another assessment. It's like you spied on our house and described her. From the bottom on my heart, I thank you. PLEASE keep making your videos and I'll be sure to watch and learn. ❤

I'm from New Hampshire, US. I've been watching your videos for a few weeks now. This has been very informative! My husband told me he has Asperger's a few months after we started dating. I did a lot of research on it. I have 2 nephews with Autism and a niece with Asperger's.
Your videos are great and I've learned a lot. I've taken some of the tests recommend and I definitely score on the autistic side. My first husband was autistic as well.
My 2nd husband and I have been together for 5 years and married for a little over a year. He was diagnosed at a very young age. He is the most loving and caring person I've ever met.
    Many Blessings to you! 💖

I think my eight year old daughter has aspergers I have always suspected asd. Putting all her "symptoms" together and researching she is ticking nearly every single box. She has a massive amount of note books full of pen drawings of the same doll over and over, page after page. She is highly intelligent, obsessively talks about her latest interest always something not age related, her current thing is Henry the 8th and his wives and the Tudor era discussing politics, using big words since the age of two. Has difficulty understanding her rude tone of voice in response to being asked to do something is not acceptable etc. She hums a lot, even a split second after being asked to stop she will start up again like she instantly forgets, she says what's on her mind regardless if it upsets someone, she will tell you that you look ugly or fat etc. Now I'm learning she may have aspergers after struggling with her for years will help me to understand my unique daughter.

When my son (now 30) was little, he used to walk on his tiptoes and hold his arms bent at the elbows, like a T-rex. At the time, I figured it was just part of a Jurassic Park obsession, but soon learned that it was a piece of a much larger puzzle. Such a quirky symptom, isn't it.

I’m an adult who still walks on my toes in most nonpublic instances (sometimes public too depending on the day), I really appreciate that your videos come from the perspective of someone with Aspergers (which is not purely clinical). I find that videos in the voice of someone who is a fellow neurodivergent are by far the most helpful in exploring who I am. In terms of my toe walking the sensation of my heel hitting the floor without shoes is unpleasant in a sort of ticklish way so I avoid it whenever possible. The sound of my heel hitting the floor also bothers me at times depending on the day. I also run on my toes exclusively when I used to run, until I developed a chronic injury from my obsession with daily running. I’ve had an interesting journey working with kids on the spectrum, and seeing their “unusual” behaviors which ultimately helped me realize that I am most likely on the spectrum as well (I haven’t been diagnosed but I currently have an ADHD diagnosis that only explains some of my quirks). There was a lot of “but I do that!” moments when discussing my client’s with my supervisors 😂. The evidence sort of kept piling up until I allowed myself to explore that possibility. I appreciate your perspective along with other Neurodivergent UA-camrs that I’ve been coming across. The content I’ve been seeing is very eye opening and helpful. 😊

Hey Dan! American in the UK (14 yrs now)
Watching your channel has always been a huge help to me. We suspected my daughter of being quite different since she was 3 but watching your videos the past couple years made up really suspect she had aspergers and sure enough she was diagnosed this past May :) But this video was great! I was thinking “Ahh! That’s why she’s always walked on her top toes!” lol and actually she has everything you mentioned in this video! Your videos always have great content. I really appreciate your work 👍🏻😊 Thank you

Thanks again for another awesome video! I live in Little Rock, Arkansas. Have you made a video about the "awkward" teen years - specifically 13, 14, 15, 16 and even 17? That's when Aspergers was most pronounced for me, although it was still a struggle in my 20s. Unfortunately, I wasn't even diagnosed until after age 55, believe it or not! In my case, it's gets better with age.

Orlando Florida My 25 yr old wasn’t diagnosed until about 15-16 yrs old. He was misdiagnosed multiple times before anyone ever suggested asperger’s. Right now we’re struggling with trying to get his first job. The interview process is so difficult for him. Thanks for the video. I wish we’d figured it out so much earlier. He’d crawl under a desk a school when it would get too loud.

Wow, thanks for that bonus one - hits the nail on the head. My 4-year-old girl is the funniest kid and we are so enjoying getting to know her. She is being assessed by an OT at the moment and I have an inkling that this is the direction we are heading in. She literally wears the same over the top carol baskin style outfit every day (tiger/leopard themed), is OBSESSED with cats, loves lining things up and categorising all the things. Her mortal enemy is the dreaded sock. She wants the same food for every meal, same seat same etc. Videos like these are so helpful for me to understand that she is brain processing in a way that seems rude to me (eye contact, seemingly not listening) but all she is trying to do is not get ovewhelmed. I would hate for her mum (me) to misread her and get grumpy when she is already stressed - because I don't want to crush any of the perfect little spirit that she has.

Susan bond Well, I live in the south of Spain, in Andalucía. So far, I did find a few professionals but...it wasn't really going good. I can't speak for everyone here, but I personally do find it very hard to locate a good professional, it was either too friendly (really, not in a professional way) or didn't really care, just trying to get it done, so I think I understand. I'm going to a center right now called "te motiva", and by far, it's the only one that has been actually helping. They give me tests (something that they never did with me before, I think that says a lot), talk with me, are friendly but in a professional way, and are understanding of my situation. They are specialized in children and adults with ADHD, so If you live in the south and have it (or even if you don't, it's worth a shot), you could try there and see if it helps you :)
      I hope it helps...

I LOVE your videos. My father likes to tell me how I was a happy child until I started school then they noticed an array of issues (or, at least, the teachers did). I was tested for all sorts of things (my hearing, because I wouldn't respond to my name or look at people when they were talking to me), I spent an entire year at a Montessori school in the art room making pillows. It was noted on my reports that I seemed to like pillows and ignored everything else. Note, I'm still obsessed with pillows just not making them. When I was younger, I would rock back and forth while sucking my thumb. This behavior would make my parents upset and they would yell at me to stop, so I would hide this repetitive behavior or at my grandmother's house, I would flick the lights on and off because I liked the sound (they were the old double push button fixtures). I couldn't tie my shoes, ride a bike, or jump rope until middle school. Friends were few, and I would say things not knowing it would be upsetting to the other person. I have social anxiety, refuse to talk on the phone because judging when it's my turn to speak is difficult. I can go on. My son was also diagnosed with autism and it's like looking in the mirror. It wasn't until adulthood that I even considered I could be on the spectrum. In school, I was diagnosed with a learning disability. Thank you for your videos.

Hi Dan. I'm from the UK. I have just been diagnosed with Aspergers at the age of 49 after my new girlfriend thought that I might have it. I only went for diagnosis because my son displays a lot of similarities to me and my ex-wife would not believe that he might have it. She's still fighting me about it, but at least he has now been referred for assessment.
I'm struggling with coming to terms with my diagnosis, but it does explain why I've had so many difficulties in life, and I don't want my son to go through life in the same way as I have.
    Keep up the good work.

My five year old son has displayed most of these symptoms in a pretty obvious way since toddlerhood, and even as a baby I think there were some signs (one nurse described him at 2 months of age as "intense"). His autism is never a big deal until, due to a change in circumstances, or a change in expectations at school, it suddenly is a problem, you know what I mean? Like, he copes well, until suddenly it's taken for granted that all the kids can, like, form a choir and sing for school assembly, or eat in a big noisy cafeteria, or get their outdoor clothes on in five minutes before the bell. I love your videos so much because, whenever he has a rough time and it feels so difficult, we see this guy with Asperger's who is articulate, cool, has a life and a home and seemed to have a handle on it all rather gracefully, enough to have a youtube channel and a following.

I'm Gene... I'm from Amarillo Texas. Another UA-camr I follow "Petra Viklund" was recently diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrom and when She began talking about Her symptoms I reallized I have the same traits. I started looking for more info and found Your channel. I then took the AQ Test online and scored 36. I don't have a formal diagnosis but I'm sure I'm on the spectrum. I've suffered meltdowns in the past. I even broke an antique wood rocking chair to splinters after a bad day at school. I've repeatedly hit Myself in the head calling Myself stupid in the past too for not understanding things. I get so frustrated. I'm learning a lot from watching You and Petra. You're life savers. Thanks for Your videos.

I’m 14 now but when I was smaller I waked on my toes I remember that my dad remarked that all the time; I think I did that cuz I hated the texture of the flour and stuff, and I learned to ride a bike at 8 and I can’t catch a ball now ether BUT I’m legally blind soooo, I hate eye contact it make me sOoOOo uncomfortable...., and I know my dad remarked/still remark that I’m organizing my things all the time, lining them up and stuff...

Hi Dan, I need some advice. I've been watching your videos for a while and I always identify with the symptoms of Asperger. In the summer of 2015 I discovered what was Asperger sindrome and from that moment I became obsessed with it and I identify with 90% of the symptoms...2 months ago i started the psychology so, do i tell her my doubts?. Please if you can advise me do it. Love your videos

    I’m from England :)
My special interest at the moment is autism and hamsters (not autism in hamsters, that doesn’t exist as far as I’m aware). I’ve made a lot of people upset when I talk to them about hamster care so much, which I don’t quite understand because it’s important.

When I was I child, my dad would yell at me and tell me to look adults in the eyes when they were taking to me. I remember hearing that so many times that I’ve learned to mask now. He didn’t know I had Asperger’s.

Norway here! I learn a lot from you, and your videos makes me reflect more. At middle school we had a autistic boy in our math class. He was very "typical", very interested in primenumbers and geometrical shapes in paintings. But in PE, he really struggled, especially playing teamsports, he didn't make eyecontact to anybody.
I myself do struggle with eyecontact and just knowing what to say to people. It's okay with my husband and family, but I am emotionally drained every day afterr meeting people at work. So I sleep really well 😂

Waterbury, Connecticut USA. I was the classic somber baby who immediately upon starting school had socialization problems then the withdrawn teenager who never made eye contact. Teachers thought I was abused because of how I reacted to physical touch. I've grown and changed a lot normalizing since then by spending so much time outside my comfort zone but results are only to a certain point. I still relate to coworkers differently from everyone else. I can adapt in different unexpected circumstances but my preference is always rigid repetition, I love routine. I've had a pretty good life being constantly employed over 30 years, raising and supporting a family, owning my own home, I'm 47 now and have understood myself for a while. I'll never be other people but I think I'm as close as I'm going to get and I'm happy being me. I wish the best for everyone here to fulfill their own potential, be at peace and experience happiness in their lives.

So informative - yes, every one as a kid and beyond, much to the dismay of my mother. Finding out now at 46 that I am Asperger's, it's been a trip looking at life through that lense a lot of 'oh wow' moments and now trying to sort it together so I can be a good Mom... somehow... with the set of traits within me. Looking forward to learning from more of your videos.

I used to arrange my beanie babies into battle formations. All the time. Same beanies were in the same squads and always had the same "squad leaders." I would spend hours placing them in their "terrain". Strange behavior for a little girl with no exposure to war themes.
I don't remember eye contact as a child, except that it was forced in school when you were in trouble/teacher was angry. I have good eye contact for basic social protocol. I also am fascinated by eyes and could spend hours up-close, observing the eyes of people who will let me haha. PS eye contact is a cultural construct and isn't necessarily a natural human evolutionary process so I'm a bit confused about its incorporation in diagnoses.

When I was a toddler, my half-sister’s mom (my dad’s ex) was friends with my mom, and she used to babysit me. She told my mom that when I played, i would line up my toys, like what Dan was doing as an example in the video. Apparently she advised my mom to get me screened for autism, but my mom brushed it off as nothing
