Hello Friends,
After an amazing time in the Tuamotus, we were ready to make way for Tahiti and the Society Islands. The weather dictates much of a sailors life and my plans had changed a few times in the days leading up to my departure. I had a rough sail to Tahiti, seeing winds over 35 knots and the seas that go with them. I arrived into Pape’ete Harbor at 2am and found a safe place to tie up.

You get those nice “land clouds” in the Atlantic too. You see a bunch of clouds moving and one cloud that stays put, and that’s where our next island is ⛵️

This really was entertaining!!! Even his camera angle while docking solo at the marina at the very end. Spot on.
There was something especially nice about this video. It seemed like a fairly easy passage for you, and I could feel the anticipation of reaching Tahiti. You seemed to be upbeat and looking forward to it. The discussion of clouds over land, and how one can "see" land long before you can actually see it, was fascinating. It was really powerful to think about the smells as you got closer. It must be amazing. And then the lights appeared as you approached at night, and you successfully communicated with the harbormaster, who seemed nice. No major problems here.

Very nice camera work. I know from other sailing channels I watch that it's super hard to capture how big the sea state is without a land reference, but you pulled it off perfectly.
yeah its seriously impossible to show wave size via video, and even more difficult to explain the discomfort those seas make for the sailors onboard

Been following you since your sail from Cali to Hawaii. Just love your content brother. Society Islands are awesome. I use to live on Huahine back in late '70s. It was my favorite island. If you go there find your way to Lake Maieva. In knee high water you'll find fresh water cherry clams there. Find a gunny sack or pillow case to take there with you. Plus Huahine is the Vanilla island. The Trades blow it's sweet smell all across the island. Tahitian folks there are awesome too. Enjoy your time in the Society Islands brah!
I loved Huahine and hiked to see the sacred blue eyed eels ! Totally magical place !!!

Black tip reef shark and forward was the most awesome part of this video. What a paradise. Wow what an awesome island. I want to retired there. For now I’m heading to the Philippines when I retire in 5 years.
The only times I've ever gone on a sailboat I got very sea sick. I think I'll stick to watching these videos from the comfort of my home. I've been binging the videos on this channel, very meditative and enjoyable. keep up the good work. FYI Quay is pronounced "key" like car key. :)

I felt the pucker as you jumped to the dock. Solo docking is still my Achilles heel.
I have more than 10k nautical miles behind me and never had any really bad docking experiences other than coming in a bit fast sometimes and STILL every SINGLE time I approach a dock I hear a voice in my head say “You have no idea what you are doing” 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Thanks to GPS it’s safe to enter places like that at night, if it was the old days I would have done what you described as well 👍🏻
Id probably get some plug and play scooter batteries a electric trolling motor for the dingy and a solar panel so I didnt waste the gas going back and forth trying to figure out where I can park. Theres also 1 digital night vision monocular camera that looks like it lights up ports to full color daylight using the ambient lighting. But Im waiting for it to get cloned so the price drops out..
Once again i get to live vicariously through you and your adventures. Thank you for sharing with us, as always. I get excited with every episode that I see pop up.

I used to live near a bread factory, there was a sweet bready smell which spread for a long way. It wasn't bad but it was like that really cheap white supermarket bread.
A Bayfield 25 or Bayfield 29 would be most ideal for sailing around the Tuamotus and also being a RTW Bluewater Pocketcruiser under 32'.
Bayfield are Canadian built boats.
The Bayfield 25 has a 2'11" draft.
The Bayfield 29 has a 3'6" draft.
The Bayfield 29 is rarer on the Westcoast of North America, found most often on the Eastcoast and Great Lakes.
To me the Bayfield 29 is the perfect boat cause it's got a spacious head/bathroom in there compared to all other boat designs.
Both are fairly fast to get through the doldrums.
Other boats I find intriguing with this same type of RTW purpose and shallow draft are:
Gladiator 24 or Gladiator 25 (by William Lapworth)
Columbia 26
Pearson Electra 22
Pearson Vanguard 32
If an Albin Vega 27 can Circumnavigate North & South America and a Newbie sailor did that?
Then anyone can find one of these above listed boats and circle the pacific safely and comfortably.
To go RTW seems dodgy at this time in history with all these wars and BS breaking out.

These are the only boats I can think of off the top of my head that you can get into for less than $20,000 and really get after your travelling goals. To see the world really develops the soul.
While yes the boats you listed would be fine for sailing around French Polynesia, the issue is actually sailing them to that remote location. And you said “These above listed boats and circle the pacific safely and comfortably” is not at all an accurate statement. There is NOTHING comfortable about ocean sailing on a 30ft boat, even Triteia which is an Alberg 30, a known blue water boat.
You also mentioned Rutherford, who I have sat and swapped sea stories with and much of his success was to do with the fact of how tough he is. He told me horrifying stories that where not talked about in the film made about him.
So, I would say most of the boats you listed would be terrible choices for ocean cruising. Is it possible to cross an ocean on a 22ft boat? Yes it might be depending on the boat and more so on the Captain. But it’s also possible to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel.
@@SailorJames Alberg is Swedish and Canadian as I recall. Yeah, that's a really nice boat you got. I'd be so happy to be in your shoes at this moment.
I've budget travelled to almost 30 countries now. Sailing would be the ultimate, I'm just learning by analyzing boats and soaking up info.
I had heard that 25-30' boats are the best for the wave patterns when you are out at sea that your size is ideal in that range.
There is a BRISTOL 27 I seen for sale on the eastcoast up in Halifax. All the boats for bluewater sailing seem to be 2/3 of them on the eastcoast, 1/3 on the westcoast of North America. But something like a Bristol 27 for $6000 is a nice price point to get into something like you got. I'm sure you paid more for yours though and to prepare it.
Rutherford is inspiring as well.

The island of Raiatea grows the best vanilla in the world. Worth a visit if you go to Tahaa.

Hello James, question: how do u take care of yourself, i mean excercise for example but mostly your diet. Obviously not easy when ur at sea but i think they're important issues as we don't get any younger! Love your vids brother! Following you from Argentina ✌️
When on passage the boat handling provides plenty of physical endurance and when coastal cruising I walk everywhere, sometimes as much as 17 miles in one day, but more often between 7-10. I eat clean and simple and have been blessed with a high metabolism. I was strictly vegetarian from 1988-2022 and now that I am cruising full-time I am pescatarian. I have also been sober my entire life, so I am in very good health.

Captain James, looking back at the test sail in Keehi harbor with 20 knots and flat seas, we made about 6 knots. What was the performance like out there with swell? Also, ahhhhh I would be pucker factor X 100 coming in to a new harbor at night hahaha
Between 5-6knots is my average speed unless beating directly into the waves and wind
Sailor James. I been on the ocean all my life, born and raised in a house literally on the seawall. Your navigation and sailing skills are extraordinary. You mentioned funds are a little tight and I hear that trust me. You love to sea and love to sail, you had a great Capt that taught you. Here’s the reason for my comment. Why don’t you open a sailing school. Have some classroom basics but the majority is hands on deck. Take one or two clients out on day trips or over night port to port etc. I’ve owned two businesses in my life for 20 years. It seems to me you can kill two birds with one stone, sail and make some revenues and the clientele you could generate just from UA-cam alone would be pretty lucrative in my view. Eventually getting a bigger ship and sail on brother. I’d look into it. Don’t let all that sailing and especially navigation knowledge go off to the weigh side, I’d make some money out of it doing something I love which is what I did in the granite business. Just a thought. My love for the ocean and all the times I’ve been underway in one vessel or the other, I’ve owned so many boats. My love all of it has made me a bit addicted to watching your video adventures. I wish you clear sky’s and calm seas, but I like the rough seas every now and then can be exciting. Excuse me if I call you Capt. I’m not a sailor, I’ve always captained under power but on the ocean my whole life never the less and most of that time fishing which is not terribly common on sailboats. To be honest, with the current cost of fuel, sailing may be the new way for me. I have only sailed twice with a neighbor who shared the same seawall property and would have sailed more because I enjoyed it but Mr. Dunn the boat owner took sick and eventually died pretty unexpectedly but I think it was cancer. It was sailboat not much different from yours. It was back in the late 70’s I was in my teens.
Thanks for the comment, to do a sailing school would require being in one place for an extended period and building up an infrastructure and relationship with the community. I am circumnavigating and always on the move and I have a number of friends who teach sailing and they make very little money vs. time spent on what it takes to teach and admin. My UA-cam channel is my full time job and requires a great deal of time to film, edit and promote on a weekly basis since 2017. I do have plans to do Zoom classes on a few subjects related to cruising next year but teaching sailing doesn’t fit in to my life at the moment

Another awesome video James.thank you for sharing. A point of curiosity... is it pronounces Quay? I am sure people on my country pronounce it 'key'... but it may well vary around the world!
The correct way to say it is “key” according to about 200 people commenting on my last video 😂 and now this one. In my defense I was on an atoll with no internet to check and pronounce a word spelled Quay as Key is one of the most ridiculous things ever 😂
When i sailed into fiji from new caladonia i could smell the indian curry 100 miles away.

I did warm it up but for filming purposes shit it off and restarted it

Do you do any fishing? I could only imagine some of the fish that you pass are some tasty ones.
Yes I fish regularly when I’m open water, but have not had much luck. Most of the cruisers I talk to have had the same. The older cruisers tell me there just isn’t as many fish as there use to be
I know absolutely nothing abouy sailing. What did that gauge in tbe red meam? Wind is too high?
It just tells you if it’s blowing from the Portside (red) or starboardside (green)

How do you get your dinghy onto your sailboat? Does it feel like it would be quite difficult to get it up and down all by yourself?
I use a halyard and a bridle set up to winch it up slowly and level and swing it over onto the deck
