I might have a new favorite video again. That bit that leads up to 7:40 left me slack jawed, even if I am your mother. And the tour of St. Malo was really nice. It left me wanting more.
You've got a really impressive son! So nice and soft-spoken too.
Your boy makes some of my favorite videos on UA-cam! Would be very proud.
The most humble yet probably one of the most gifted sailor on you tube. He and Holly from "Wind Hippie Sailing" have similar carefree and minimalist approach providing genuineness often lacking among the you tube frenzy...
I watch Sam’s videos and think, I wish we were friends. Just seems like such a good person.
Sam, I remember watching you singlehanded sail to Hawaii, and thinking to myself "I hope he makes it...", now you're an old pro salty sailor!!!
Thats how i found sam too
Yep, that single-handed sail in the Pickled Herring started it for me as well. Still go back and watch that.
@@HarryJVaughn3not the pickle that made it to Hawaï ;)
I remember that vid. First one I saw of his. He seemed to be grinning through the storm and I wasn't sure he'd make it. Of course he did! He's a pro
It must have hit the algorithm because that’s what introduced me to Sam. What a wild man going from cali to Hawaii like that. Shout out Henrietta
Sam. I know I’m way behind the curve (about 10 months behind) but just a day or two ago discovered your videos. I’ve enjoyed your adventures.
The first video I saw you were in NC. That caught my attention since I live in NC.Also you happened to install a Electric motor on your boat very smartly and on your own. You have done a lot of little improvements to the boat yourself with basic tools using whatever you can find. Not necessarily masterfully but efficiently and cheaply. Which is what I have had to do all my life so I totally understand and admire. And who doesn’t love a sailboat with Quiet power provided by the wind!
I hope you can continue your journey!
What a video, we had music singing shaving beaching cleaning zincing touring and a bunch of other 'ings I saw.
I returned back to your channel after a long hiatus and I gotta say that you look extremely well. This lifestyle suits you. A real veteran of the seas making his own way, love it.
Nice hull. People have forgotten that a full keel and rudder protected prop is the best configuration for a cruising boat. Fin keels, spade rudders, sail drives, folding props, etc, are all headaches.
Hey Sam, french guy living in in the US and learning to sail... One day I'll do what you did and sail back home. Godspeeed
That is a perfect plan! Go for it!
Wow 😍
good vid Sam. When I was a young fella like you I worked on a prawn trawler in the N.W. of Western Australia. We worked out of a place called Sam's Creek (yeah) and it had a big tide range. We were hung up there for weeks while the skipper and the owner wrangled over repairs. Every low tide we were over on our bilge. During the day that was o.k. we'd go visiting, but if it was night time we had to sleep part on the bunk and part on the hull. Tiresome. It went on for weeks. Cheers.
Oh man - that was super fun to watch. I'd have been excited too! Good thinking to careen to the bed side!
Well done🎉 I like the format of your videos, rustic, down to earth and honest.
Its so great to be getting these frequent, regular, Sam Holmes Videos
what an adventure!! thanks for filming the process, super interesting
Thanks, Sam, I always enjoy your videos. Hope you have a great trip around the Mediterranean this summer.
Fascinating. You are one brave man beaching your boat like that! Loved the little interlude with the oboe! Compelling watching. Thank you. ⛵️
I haven't watched one of your videos in quite a while but I'm so glad this is the one I saw. What a cool experience just parking the boat on the sand lol. Glad to see you're still adventuring!
Sailing is cool. I’m glad people like you have the courage to tackle these things and record them. It’s pretty interesting.
Just catching on your sailing adventures and I am enjoying this series a lot! Man you are living the dream!
Hi Sam, so nice seeing you. Be well.
I love your bravery and willingness to be adventuresome and it shows in your incredible level of sailing skill. Good for you.
You’re showing me things I never even knew about my home nation and our waters! You’re winning Sam! Keep the instrument playing coming, I think I could listen to a whole playlist while I’m working???
man you just never stop doing crazy awesome things, keep it up man and stay safe~
Nice one Sam. I’m glad you found those incredible metal turrets too!
Best sailing channel on YT! Thanks Sam!
Great video again!! Thanks Sam!........⛵⛵⛵
Great video! But I can't believe you traveled across an ocean and got within walking distance of Mont St Michel, and you didn't actually visit it and go inside! I loved it so much I've been twice, myself. St. Malo is great, though. My brother and I were visiting Le Grand Be when suddenly my brother said, "There's no more land left!" I was like, what are you talking about!? And he said "THERE'S NO MORE LAND LEFT!" and pointed to the tide rushing in! So we ran to what was now a shore, and we quickly took our shoes and socks off and hiked our pants legs up and ran through the rising water to get back to the mainland. Good times.
Nice video. Suggestions from Fundy. Wait til 1/2hr or so ebb tide. Then power the boat straight in til it grounds. This minimizes "pounding" time while waiting to hard ground. Or,you can turn boat parallel to beach at last moment,& lay her down with deck listed toward shore. This will diminish pounding during rising tide, but you must drop anchor,(on the way in) to keep boat from being driven up the beach as it re-floats. You need water & a long & short handled coarse (fishboat)scrub brushes for bottom cleaning. When the tide drops to about 1ft or less depth, jump over with buckets & brushes.Dip brush in tide as long as you can & use filled buckets for rinse. Do maintenance, zincs, bottom paint-after tide leaves. Cheers/Len
Fundy folks know their tides!
Sam Holmes Sailing - Basic - raw - fun - entertaining content--> great channel. Another great update Sam. Thanks for sharing.
Wow…learning so much!
Wow thank you. Your video took me back in time to 1974 when I was right there where you are. Beautiful vessel. Blessings to you and yours coming at you from Southern Oregon
I love your content sam, and especially loved the original music in this episode! Keep up the great work, thanks for making such incredible videos
Thanks
I was in saint malo end of this September for 5 days. Absolutely beautiful. The beaches Harbor and town. History everywhere you look. I also did a day trip to mont Saint Michael. Arrived when the tide was out. Incredible to wonder how the abby was built arond 1000 AD. The Sanchez ice cream you had in Saint malo is legendary as are the sweet rolls. I stayed within the odd town walls on rue chateaubriand.
Great following you Sam.
Great Song Sam, charmed life
Well done Sam. Drying out is less stressful in sheltered waters, without the bumping. I dry out regularly with my gaff rigged boat. It doesn't lean as much as yours though!
I visited mont st michel in the 1980’s , an other worldly place to visit and let imagination go wild. Love your approach to sailing. You make it seem really accessible. I see the new Apple immersive goggles are getting some press. Can you imagine the videos you can shoot and we can feel like we are right there, life size. Life’s gonna get crazy for your kind of content.
Very good. Thank you& good health to you!
Top man! I love watching these videos.. good luck Sam
That is just way too strange to see! Nice work and of all places!
Mont St. Michael is amazing. I hope you get to see it up close. It was so cool to see it from your position.
Great Video Sam. Glad you didn't take the first strategy to beach Pickled Herring. I know someone who did the same in his boat on a spring tide and was beached for weeks before he refloated again!!!
Good luck with the Biscayne and watch for those pesky Orcas, been at it again I hear.
This is my home town and the marina where my boat is moored! Sorry I missed the opportunity to have a chat and show you around. I always wanted to beach around Mont-Saint-Michel but my boat is not cut for it. Glad that you did -- a lot of sailor wouldn't dare.
If you are going toward Gibraltar, be careful. There are Orcas sinking small sailboats there. They learned how to do it.
Sam, you are the awsomest sailor man ever. I can't imagine careening my boat like that, and you do it nonchalantly AND single handed. You are a true Joshua Slocum of your time, only I hope you make it home on your last voyage.
Great video your visiting all the places we sailed to as a family when I was a kid.
Greetings from Sweden and thank you for another great video, Sam. The tides are truly fascinating. I have been watching your UA-cam channel for about one year. Your videos have given me so much inspiration to become a sailor for myself. Last week I finally bought my first sailing boat. Now I am a proud owner of a 24 feet sailing boat and learning as I go. Keep up the good work. Best wishes.
Right on. Congratulations on the new boat
Really lovely enjoyable video. Almost makes me want to go cruising again
What a fantastic image…the Pickle on its Port! 😊
Always interesting Sam, sail on!
I've seen this done even with cats. But , with a monphull with a large keel its absolutely amazing how much work you can do ! I've seen bottom paint done and everything. Definitely a great way to save money !
Thanks!
Hey Sam, Hi from NC. Hi Sam's mom. Last time i saw below the water line was when it was on stands near Aurora before moving to Oriental.
Been watching your channel since the Ranger 23, still loving the content.
Woulda been cool to have seen Pickle right itself from a dingy POV but it was a relief to see you on your way. This made me appreciate the process of careening and the opportunity to check and test for tank leakage - water, oil, fuel, etc. Another great video Sam. Thanks for showing and sharing your adventures with us..
Next time I will but it was too dark this time
if you move your solar panels back they wouldn't be shaded by the boom and you would have more cockpit space. Nice video! lovely boat
Great adventure!
Nice job Sam!
Amazing Trip Mr Sam.I wish U Good Luck
14:08 That's Corsair Sam Holmes on the =saxophone=! Take a bow, Sam! -- I was stunned by the sax solo, did some searching, and found your video "Why I always carry a saxophone onboard," from a couple of years back, with my like button smashed, which means that I'd seen you win the sax battle of '20 in magnificent style! Bravo, Sam! (Though my woodwind of choice is the clarinet, I do dig the saxophone, as well!) 🔥❤🔥
I think it's so cool you're going to all these places I've been. Sant-Maloù is such a nice place.
If you took a bit left of the castle, you will be able to get a boat closer. ❤
There are arial photos showing more depth in that location.
Thank you for this great, inspiring video. I want to start travelling again
Nice and informational!
Thanks a lot I really enjoy the video
I’ve had very little interest in other peoples lives or exploits until I came across your UA-cam channel ! Fabulous content and presented in such an enthralling manner.
If you’re ever in SW France and fancy a brew (cup of tea) and a day sailing a Mirror or a Duckling dinghy on little inland lakes, drop us a message 😊 keep up the great work 👌 thank you and best wishes.
Beautiful footage Sam.
A bit of everything, seamanship, history, music,
and a game but considered move to beach her like that.
A pair of legs for next time ?
The Bay of Biscay Can be Really Bad Sam. If you’re not stuck for time, following the Coast down keeping well away from the edge of the Continental Shelf just Offshore, down France, across Northern Spain then down the coast of Portugal is a really nice journey, with lots of places to dive into to shelter and wait for the weather window for the next leg. Great places along the way too. Safe Journey and Fair Winds. Bob in Wales. 👍🏴⛵️🌟🌟🌟
That took some balls Sam...respect to you !
You are one resourceful dude! Great content!
I have a Jsax like yours. You sound good. You can fit a soprano sax mouthpiece and reed on them for an even better sound.
Awesome content Sam !!!
what an awesome adventure. I think you may have a top ten hit on your hands to boot.
Fun footage
Love your music 🎶
This is why I bought my 55 yr old Westerly Nomad triplekeeler: to go mud crawling, hopefully this year also to Mt Saint Michel, unusual hard to reach less for me with 2ft draft… great movie, thank you!
love the stash and hair-doo keep the the great content !
Wow, quality time!
amazing adventure!
Great video Sam! Thanks for the history lesson about the Corsairs.
Glad you enjoyed it! Congratulations on the launch! You built that boat amazingly fast. Where are you heading to now?
@@samholmessailing Down the East coast and to the Eastern Caribbean. Then thru Panama and on to the Pacific. Are you thinking of a circumnavigation?
Great episode.
You are an adventurous soul with so many accomplishments ... you have lived the dreams of many because you have done so much ... one thing you have not done is searching for the city of Atlantis ... you have also not done the Bermuda Triangle ... Scuba diving with a Lady diver would be a super adventure those two destinations ... you would be perfect for it ... maybe in the future while your still young ... 😊😊😊
I am adding legs to my 38' steel Bruce Roberts cutter. Planning to sail from Florida to the Philippines by way of the Horn soon.
I love the high tide music ❤
Its always nice to have spare tank or bladder on board, fill it up with seawater at first contact and you'll bring her down easy;)
Great show.
Such a legend this dude.
Good one Sam 😊
Beautiful boat
I hope you brought your orca repellant spray for when you finally hit the Med
My understanding is they aren't going for full/long-keelers. It seems to be deep narrow fins they like to play with, together with deep spade rudders.
@@B_Ruphe I didn't realize they were particular about it
The keel hung rudder should also be less tempting than spade or skeg hung types.
I've seen a video where they chew on a HR Monsun 31, so I wouldnt feel safe in a long keeler^^
@@davewestner 😂
VERY INTERESTING ON HOW YOU POSITION THE BOAT TO CHECK THE BOTTOM. GREAT LITTLE ISLAND HISTORY.
Great Song!
Haha, here in The Netherlands we do this too but usually with our traditional flat-bottomed ships without a keel. Sure sleeps a lot more comfortable 🤣 Must be a cool experience
Awesome! Bold move
When in France, you are "Voilier Hareng Mariné" ;)
amazing episode
I like this channel. Good content, learn something new every time, titles are intriguing but not clickbaity. Subbed.
When in the Bay of Biscay, before you go towards Spain, you must stop into Cap Breton, it's between Bordeaux and Biarritz.
Sam, you were like a kid at Christmas! Live your best life!!
Wasn’t able to follow you you for a bit and stumbled upon your video. Welcome to Europe! I’ve visited Mont saint Michel with my 1975 Gold Wing. Hope you get to walk over!
Have fun! 🏰🚶🏽⛵️
No getting away from it, a 4ft Draft Really Rocks, and as a Cruiser, the Maximum Draft I’ll consider having on a Sailboat, is 5ft (the Draft on my next Sailboat, as I can’t fit what I need on the smaller one that has 4ft Draft. That extra Foot of Draft isn’t a horrifically Bad issue with the number of places it rules out being able to visit thankfully, as that is the Draft when fully laden with Water, Fuel, Provisions, and everyone onboard- that I can live with. 👍Best Wishes and Fair Winds. Bob in Wales. 🏴⛵️🌟🌟🌟
There is an old man in BC doing this most evenings. he has a two keel boat. so cool. connecting with the land seems so obvious
I had a double bilge keel boat...they’re made for beaching, very popular in Europe...cheers🍷🇨🇦
Cheaper to keep a boat on a mud birth. The bilge keel sailing boat was developed in the Uk post war.. but the French have since developed the latest high performance generation of mud skipper cruising boats..
there are a few company's that makes outriggers for small boats so they can standing upright when the tide goes out, they plug into the side in little sockets aluminum poles with feet. If you're home port had a tide put the stilts down and go ashore
The danger in what you did is that there could be a rock that the hull comes to rest on and that could seriously damage the hull. You should aways survey the careening spot on the previous low tide and place a marker buoy so that you can be sure of a safe grounding.
That seems like sage advice.
Even if there was a rock the conditions that he did this in would not cause any damage it wasn’t bouncing as it lay down
Buzzkill!
So true
@@dowser81 It was bouncing a little and there was no way knowing in advance that it wouldn't "bounce". Bouncing or not, the rock could easily pierce the hull or damage the rudder, propeller, prop shaft, etc. if in the wrong place. When refloating, you have zero control of how "bouncy" it is and the rock could, again, easily pierce the hull or cause other damage.
Wow, brave to careen your boat. We've only done it with a bilge keeled boat.
