New 6" Riser Block on Old Jet Bandsaw

- It turns out that a new 6" riser block kit will still install on my older Jet bandsaw without any trouble.
Check out how I make this huge upgrade in capacity on my saw by putting in the riser block and taking this from a 6-inch resaw height, to a whopping 12-inches.

I just made this upgrade to my 1982 Jet JBS-14 bandsaw, and when I removed the upper wheel assembly, I found that the guide pins were not only in the opposing corners as the riser block's, but they were also drilled on an angle. I had to drill new holes on the bandsaw to be able to use the riser block. It was tricky, and took me a little bit of extra time, but I got it to fit perfectly. I know this video is a few years old, but I wanted to make a suggestion for another upgrade to your saw. If you haven't already done so, take a look at Carter guide bearings. I did ALL of Carter's upgrades to my Jet bandsaw (they make a lot more than just guide bearings), and now, it runs cooler, quieter, and smoother, than any other bandsaw I have looked at. All of their products are tailor made to fit most bandsaws on the market, new and old, including my Jet JBS-14 (I don't have the JWBS-14).

Would've been nice to see it do a big resaw. After all that's what the block is for. My old 14 only has 1/2 hp. I'm wondering if it'll have enough juice to resaw 8 inches of teak.

Good upgrade! Did mine 15 years ago. Looks like you need to replace the power cord near the switch. It looked split.
That all looks just like my RIDGID 14 in bandsaw. I wonder if it would work straight across there too. Good video with some talking and working.

Its nice when company's keep their parts uniform and standard. I have a Delta bandsaw (used) and love it but didn't know Jet made one. I will have to keep my eyes open. I know they make a nice lathe if that's the same company?
I agree!And yes, Jet makes lots of nice tools, including lathes. I have their 1221 VS wood lathe and have been loving it!
Great video. I had been looking for the exact video to upgrade my Jet. I have the same exact saw and plan to upgrade to the riser as well. Glad you pointed out a couple fixes/short cuts to reduce the frustration of installation. What length saw blade do you use once the riser is installed?

I recently added the riser to my really old Jet 14 inch bandsaw. One issue I’ve noticed is the upper blade guides need to be readjust if you raise them up high. The thruster will be touching the blade and the right side guide will be pushing on the blade. It’s not a huge problem, just a bit annoying having to fix the guides every time I raise or lower them. I actually thought maybe there was a tiny bit of dirt or sawdust between the riser block, either top or bottom, so I took it all apart and cleaned it well, but it didn’t fix the problem. Any ideas on how to fix this would be great.

I'm doing well Allan, thanks for asking. This upgrade didn't change how the bandsaw worked at all, it just increased that capacity - with an increased capacity I am able to work with bigger material than I was before. So the short answer is yes, I would say it is better for me this way.
Hi Mark, Can you tell me what size of guide bar is in the kit? 15/16" maybe?
I don't know of the top of my head, but I'll try to remember to measure it for you.
I think the blade guide is backwards on your install. If the blade slips forwards it might get nasty.
You are correct... I did it that way so I don't have to remove that guard every time I change blades. As long as I keep both of the doors closed there should be no way for the blade to come at me.
petec1972 - I’ve been selling that and the old Delta 14” bandsaw for 20 years. The guide is mounted the correct way. The doors do keep the blade trapped.
