- Derek Jeter's flip and Jeremy Giambi's no-slide are surely the most memorable moments of this game. But the game was like 2 hours long, so much other stuff happened. In fact Jason Giambi 's little bro even had a chance to redeem his no-slide and devalue Jeter's flip! Because you see, Jeter’s flip did not end the game.
In the bottom of the 9th, the score was still 1-0. There were two outs. Jermaine Dye was on second. And Jeremy Giambi was up to bat. There’s more to this game than one amazing play. So we have to rewind.

Giambi's non-slide is still one of the least talked about dumb plays in sports history. You're taught at a young age to slide whenever the play is close but he chose not to. It gets overshadowed by the amazing play that Jeter made, but Giambi definitely would have been safe had he slid.
If that happens, we likely get a Seattle VS Arizona WS.
Yeah Jeremy Giambi was a very overrated player during his MLB days.
Wasn’t a fast runner, struggled with constancy at the plate, and caused some locker room distractions that eventually led to him getting traded out of Oakland just two months into the next season after they were highly relying on him to replace the production of his brother.

Should have been NL MVP that year. I've never seen a pitcher dominate the way he did, on short rest just about every start.

I love how the "tag" was between Giambi's legs, aka not a tag and he was safe, but that would kill the myth of Jeter so it's never mentioned.

The Yankees were outscored every series, sometimes badly, but kept pulling out close wins, and were a blown bottom of the 9th lead by Rivera from winning it all. Especially with what happened outside baseball that year it was a wild run.

Can’t believe Giambi doesn’t slide there. Spectacular play by Jeter but everyone knows you should slide in that situation.
This Yankees run was also weird as they would trail several of their series severely and be outplayed for most of the time. But then they’d won a few games by narrow margin and win the final game. Amazing that they came a blown save away from winning a fourth straight title.
Seeing Jason Giambi sign with NYY after this season was when i really understood being an A's fan is just a cycle of pain from which the payoff never comes.

wait...if he slides he's 100% out. there's no question. posada is swinging around to tag a slide. his ONLY shot is stepping over the glove...which i sort of thing he did. i've never been convinced he got tagged. either eway, if he slides he has absolutely no chance.

This has got to be the most memorable image from the Fall of 2001.
I don't see how anyone can be sure Giambi would have been safe if he'd slid. In fact, I think he would have been even more out. Sliding actually slows you down; the reason people do it is to avoid tags coming from above or not run through bases. But in this case, it was the very fact that Giambi was running that made Posada almost miss his leg. If Giambi had slid, I think the tag would have caught him on the bottom of his foot or the side of his leg before his foot touched the plate.
Jeter turned being in the right place at the right time into an art form. If there was a clutch moment to be had he was having it. You can call some guys lucky as an insult almost, but Jeter turned good luck on the field into a skill somehow.
A deep rewind of the Jim Leyritz homer in the 96 world series is a MUST.

"New young kings of the AL" may be a stretch. The A's weren't even the king's of the AL West. If the A's made it to the ALCS, I think the Mariners would have beat them.
Consider that was the year the Mariners won 116 games. The A’s still had more young talent considering all those players came out of their farm system

I feel there’s a decline in quality in some of these recent Rewinders. There’s not much of an introduction anymore, there’s less info on the backstory and references to the events leading up, no more cutaways to the narrator. They barely crack 12 minutes anymore. Maybe it’s just me.

Would be interesting to do an Overlap episode focusing on the 2014 Wichita State/Kentucky NCAA basketball tournament game.
WSU coming off a final four appearance in 2013 and entering the 2014 tournament as an undefeated #1 seed, losing in an amazing game to a team that would go on a final four run of their own and enter the 2015 tournament as an undefeated #1 seed.
Interesting 3 year timeline between the two programs.
