      Craftsman had to build a model first from wood, mostly. Then moulds were made from it for the plastic kit.

    Well..fantastic! So many ideas and new skills I can apply to my build Harry. And what is fantastic for me is….I found the same kit on eBay last night from the UK. 1973 in the original white box and brown logo top left. Postage is the killer but just couldn’t pass on it. Excited to add this to Prince and Sovereign to complete the trilogy. Thank you again!

    This is coming along beautifully. I find it interesting how you work out your techniques for modeling small details such as these gun ports. You're always searching for the easiest way to make it look good, which is not necessarily the first thing you think of. I use the same philosophy too. I would also love to see you finish up that Wingnut Wings model you started several years ago. That was the first of your videos I ever watched. I've done five of them now and fully understand how and why you were reluctant to close up the fuselage. So please get to it when you can but it is your channel and I enjoy and appreciate seeing whatever you're working on.

    I wonder how long they did keep those structures covering over the main deck? I have read that while the structures were meant to protect the crew on the main deck from boarding activity the problem was that it also trapped the crew on the ship! Also too why is it they never include the rudder on the ships boats on these kits. I have found some really great info online that shows how the rudder should have been.

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  2 роки тому +1

      From my research they dropped the cover towards the end of the 17th century. Yep rudders and tillers always seem to missing on these kits. Easy to scratch, as I did for the Revell Bounty.

    Hi Harry,
    Great idea for doing the gunport lids and ropes, using the rebate liner. Is that styrene and what is the thickness you used for the lid expansions?
    Finally, this is not a criticism but I’m wondering about that big lantern sitting in the middle of the poop deck. Is it accurate?
    I like your style of making attractive models with extra detail and painting schemes that are reasonably accurate and pleasing to look at. Detail but no rivet counting. Carry on Harry.

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  2 роки тому

      Yes that absurd Lantern is typical for early 17th century French ships.. you see them in all the paintings from the period. I used 0.5mm thick Evergreen styrene sheet for the blue faces inside the gun port lids, cut to about 5mm square.

  • @thomasdailey9280
    @thomasdailey9280 2 роки тому +1

    When you were gluing the cannon doors on , what type of glue were you using ? It was the blue cap with the brush . Was it adhering to paint ?

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  2 роки тому +1

      it was my Revell Contacta in an old Tamiya bottle. I had already filed the inside of the gun lid hinge free of paint, and scraped some paint off the joining slot on the hull. So there were plastic surfaces to bond with the cement.

    Hey Harry, a question. Were ships of this period really as brightly decorated as your model suggests?

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  2 роки тому +1

      For the French, even more so, the excess of decoration in the 17th century and some of the 18th century was absurd. Look at the Swedish Wasa, plus the English Royal Sovereign and Prince as other examples of more gilding than the Sistine Chapel. Spanish ships were not as ornate, and the Dutch tended to be more functional than fanciful. But it was age where bling was the thing. That’s why we like to build models of these ships.

    Brass was NEVER used for cannon. "Brass" cannons as the term was used, were actually bronze, a copper/tin alloy.

      Bronze (tin) can be quite brittle so the cannons tended to shatter and explode. Brass (zinc) offered a compromise that was more malleable and less prone to detonation. Even the later black cannons of the English were actually brass covered in black pitch. It was not until the 18th century as better alloys of iron were developed that iron cannons became the norm.

    • @DARIVSARCHITECTVS
      @DARIVSARCHITECTVS 2 роки тому

      @@HarryHoudiniModels I believe you will find with more research that brass may have been used for small arms in early times, but the term "brass cannon" is a misnomer, since "brass" and "bronze" were interchangeably used two to three hundred years ago. Come bronzes had 2-4 % zinc mixed into copper alloy which already has 8-10% tin, so the primary alloying element was tin. Zinc/copper brass is far too weak for culverin or drakes, much less cannon. Websites often incorrectly use the term brass when in fact the metal is a bronze. I work with bronze, and know it to be an exceptionally useful metal. You can make springs and swords out of it, unlike brass, which is crystalline, brittle, and weak. It also fatigues easily. Search for the term "gun metal" as recently used in cannon in America and you will see that guns called "brass" commonly were actually bronze alloys.

    • @DARIVSARCHITECTVS
      @DARIVSARCHITECTVS 2 роки тому

      @@HarryHoudiniModels I believe these websites which use "brass" are misleading, owing to the use of brass and bronze interchangeably during the period guns were cast. If you can obtain the alloying percentages, you will probably find that guns termed as brass actually had more tin in them than zinc. Brass can be used in small arms like an arquebuse, however.

  • @lutzderlurch7877
    @lutzderlurch7877 2 роки тому

    never heard of actual brass guns. period writing is a bit foggy on terminology, but i am quite sure, they only used bronze for guns, and later iron. No middle step to brass.

    • @HarryHoudiniModels
      @HarryHoudiniModels  2 роки тому

      The French and others in the 17th Century used brass cannons, it was harder than bronze, however as a decent iron alloy wasn’t invented yet, it was used until the 18th century. English ships tarred their cannons, so even if they were brass, they looked like the black iron ones. Best do your own research before trying to cannon count.
