It's more of an anti-hero arc than a villain arc. You're right that McKinney was unhealthy and he didn't need the stress of being a coach of the Lakers...but Riley was still pretty gangsta in his maneuvering to oust him and (spoiler alert) later Paul Westhead. As the show progresses, I'm sure the Riley's personal fashion choices will reflect his character arc. He starts the show as a sad, washed-up jock with a schlubby '70s hippie aesthetic. As he gains confidence and power, his gradual transformation to the look we associate him with - slicked back hair and expensive suits - will make alot of sense. This is a good show. Pat Riley is a very interesting human, and Adrien Brody is a good actor is what I'm saying.
I don’t think Riley had a part in ousting westhead. Paul got cocky and didn’t want to use the system he was winning with. Pat definitely tried to tell him but he didn’t listen
For anyone that read Showtime by Jeff Pearlman, you know Winning Time is full of fiction. Pat Riley was always grateful to Jack McKinney for laying the foundation of the 80's Lakers, so much so that Riley, while with the Heat, would give tickets for Heat games to McKinney, who spent his final years in South Florida.
This show has shown that Pat Riley was grateful for Jack and that he also wanted to finish what was started. So if showtime is false then how come they properly portray Pat Riley as being grateful and also a great coach???
For anyone that's aware of laws and life and reality. If the book was completely false, the author would be in debt and the show wouldn't be able to exist
Pat Riley wasn’t a villain, he just knew that him and Westhead were the coaches to take that team to the Finals. You don’t win 50 games by just coincidence. And little did McKinney know, Riley would become one of the greatest coaches of all time.
@@kylev938 I need to binge this series. Not sure if it’ll ever show a future scene from Pat’s 4 years coaching the Knicks in the early 90s, but I’d love it if they did. The show is focused on the Showtime Lakers so I don’t expect it.
the one scene where he punches the blackboard, you almost see him transform into pat, its kind of crazy, I never wouldve even pictured the 2 as similar before this.
@@jspi04 Yes he did! He wanted way more money than the Knicks offered and he wanted to be team President and GM. The Knicks should have given him what he wanted. Can't wait for next week's episode. Looks like next episode will finally be about Pat taking over Paul. We're finally going to see Adrien play "Godfather Pat Riley".

Do yourself a favor and read the book by Jeff pearlman. This show was entertaining but relied heavily on dramatization of events/characters when they really didn’t need to.
"Shanty Irish"? Does that make McKinney "Lace curtain Irish?" While I can believe that the real McKinney was pissed off at Riley, that's not a slur I'd expect from another Irish-American.
“Villain arc” is tongue and cheek you dummies lol He’s clearly not calling Pat a villain here… he’s referencing Pat growing balls and being “selfish” here. Jack couldn’t coach yet end of story. Hated this show and the way the characters constantly break the fourth wall. All of them, interchangeably talking to each other. Plus the whole show is basically fiction.
It was not villainy, it was ambition and not wanting to be (in his own eyes) a failure, since Jack coming back meant he was out with no other perspectives for a job and a life in sight. It could be read as a dick move, yeah, but hardly villainous.
The show portrays Pat Riley a villain, Paul Westhead a loser, and Jerry West an alcoholic. Writers of this show probably never even watched a basketball game let alone the Showtime Lakers
Riley isn’t even a villain. Everybody in the story is an anti-hero. Westhead isn’t a loser, just inexperienced. And as for Jerry West, he’s probably the most relatable male character in the show.
They should have casted a better looking guy than Adrian Brody for Pat Riley. I am amazed these actors have not sued this show which has portrayed them in an extremely unflattering way.
I wouldn’t say it was his Villian arc. It was more of a good move since Jack was having serious health problems. Practically saved his life.
Correct, McKinney himself admitted in later years that he was not ready to coach in the spring of 1980.
@@ANTHONY0808able I can't believe it would even be considered. Buss actually did help McKinney get a job with the Pacers after this.

Not a villain arc but more of a "growing a backbone" arc. He started to become more assertive in stead of laying down
When Pat Riley said you first? Does that count as breaking the 4th wall?
Pat looked much better than in the show. He had style.
My favorite character
If the series is really going to try to portray Riley as the villain in all this, than this truly is a huge work of satire.
He's not shown as the villain, he's trying to keep his job. If Jack comes back he gets fired.
Movies always used to have actors who looked better than the actual people they played. Now it's the opposite.
