I was at the first screening of this show that some of the older lakers saw, that was Kareem’s first comment: “Solomon, I wish I had that much hair. You do me well though, I was in flux. I so desperately felt myself stretched identity wise in between Wilt (Chamberlain) and Bill (Russell). My journey was from wilt to becoming more of a statesman like Bill and I can feel that.”
I appreciate how the players in the playoffs aren't just generic mooks, they actually look like the teams the Celtics/Lakers beat, even though they're only on screen for like a second. The chubby mustache guy is Jeff Ruland, the shaggy blond Dallas point guard is Brad Davis, Marques Johnson looks like Marques Johnson, etc.
They would've probably expanded a lot more on the others guys in the league had the show been more successful but the 2nd season had only 7 episodes so they couldn't introduce guys like they did with Doctor J or David Thompson in the first season
@@Liface that's every show and movie inspired by or based on true events. They are all entertainment, not historical documents. Do not make the same mistake the Thermians made. 😉
Honestly, the show sucks. I tried to get into it but it’s just not worth the investment. Sure, the clips of basketball sequences are very cool with them highlighting all the players from that era but the truth is these scenes make up only a very small part of the series. Most of the show delves into the Buss family and the relationship between Jerry and Jeanie Buss and the other children, and Jerry Buss and his love interests. It’s slow and boring and takes up way too much time. Also, none of it is interesting.
I'm not a basketball fan by any means but I thought his whole show (S1 and S2) was awesome! This scene here is by far my all time favorite for some reason. Happy to find it here. Thanks!
@@daveyboy_the entire decade of the 80s and until the end of the Showtime Lakers in the early 90s and the rise of the bad boy Pistons and Michael Jordan
@GKram13 yeah let's make a series on everything that happened. In fact, let's do a series on every yr . Of the NBA cause ya know what good is it live when we can have actors do it
There have been many NBA legends that in their entire NBA careers had never had the chance to play in the NBA Championship like Bob Lanier, Dave Bing, "Pistol" Pete Maravich, Connie Hawkins and Lou Hudson to name a few.
Magic vs Bird really is the best rivarly in basketball. What even comes in second place ? The timing was right, the teams were right, the era was right. Everything came together perfectly.
Thats why we live in a horrible world? You need to live more life and see wtf is going on in the world, son. You seem like the kind of guy who cries when theres no cereal left in the house.
That look Bird (actor) gives at 3:24 is true to his real character. Just ice cold assassin on the court. Bird made you pay on both ends of the court. I was in my 20's during this rivalry and enjoyed every time the Celtics beat the Lakers. Blue collar ball versus West Coast Flash. The NBA today is a joke with LeFlop and his crew.
Nice detail: the Lakers play on the left side of the court, the Celtics on the right side. This is a reversal of the old filmmaking trick - the antagonists come from the left, and the protagonists on the right.
It is a criminal act this show was cancelled. I'm a die hard Celtics fan, and this show was so good it had me legitimately rooting for the Lakers. I loved Pat Riley's character. The actor was incredible. I obviously knew the results of the games/series, but the show had me rooting for the Lakers - until they played the Celtics and Bird started trash talking and it was the greatest thing ever.
@@MadScientist81fax that’s like me rooting for the bears in a packers show fuck that if it only focused on their sb loss to the broncos that’d be awesome 😭
I didn't know it had a season 2. I think that is the reason for the cancellation. No one knew, at least not nearly as many who knew season 1 was on its way
This show was absolutely amazing. The shots, edits all of it. Acting may have been far fetched on what they said at times, but this was a hll of a series
Fun Fact: James Worthy said that the Lakers would listen to speeches of Malcolm X whenever they played the Celtics he talked about this on a podcast with former NBA PLAYERS.
Even thought it was Bird v. Magic, I'm not surprised it was canceled! Not easy to transition a real-life sports rivalry into a TV series with appeal beyond the sport. Even when taking liberties with some real-life scenes to snag the average, non-sports viewer.
@bobabooey4537 This photo is supposed to remind me that I can achieve things I thought I could never achieve. ..and who cares about my avatar photo anyway? My text is here!
First of all, that game between the Lakers and the Jazz where Kareem Abdul-Jabbar broke Wilt's scoring record was at UNLV. Second during this sequence, Larry Bird in the Eastern Conference Semi-finals was having huge problems with Bernard King and the New York Knicks and it took seven games to send Bernard King and the Knicks on summer vacation. Third, a new enemy of the Detroit Pistons was starting their rise (we will see Showtime vs. Motor City Madness later).
You can blame Dan and Dave for destroying the GOT franchise and spiraling hbo into millions not knowing how to recoup losses after the destroyed the last two seasons- so many loyal die hard fans that would have rewatched that first series over and over- now their throwing good money after bad and have no clue how to manage.
As much as I love this show, it's probably for the best it got canceled after two seasons. If it went any longer they would have just ended up f****** it up anyway

There is a reason that the director of Hoosiers hired basketball players, not actors, and limited their dialogue. It's tough to for actors to--as you say--replicate the fluidity of professional athletes. Have you seen Tim Robbins in Bull Durham?
Great concept and story to make a show but the direction and acting in this clip is terrible. Magic and bird look great but the Kareem actor is not good at acting. If they put a little more drama into this instead of comedy I think it could have lasted.
Use 80s music ,there is a ton thats more than adequate, instead we get 60s and 70s same 15 or songs used ,this music doesnt fit for the time, this is Magics Lakers vs Birds Celtics ,the epitome of ,a main cog of 80s history, use the music of that decade, i mean whats next ,same ole stones ,moody blues, Doors etc. I love those bands but let them represent their time, i know its a wierd complaint but really get sick of the same boomer songs ,this is Gen X time and the tunes are just as good but with even more diversity, hell i say from the Police to Metallica to NWA and Run DMC to 80s VanHalen and AC/DC and even the New Wave crap a lot to choose from and no reaching into the grundge ,the lazy gen x music yet either, thats another rant
Too much focus on silly camera shots and not enough substance. And for a show supposedly on real people and events, too inaccurate for people that really know about and care about the subject. And no, Larry Bird wasn't a loud, rude, out of control psychopath like the show seems to want you to believe.
The actor who played Kareem brought so much dignity to the role. Absolutely nailed it.
His name is Solomon Hughes
He also brought too much hair
