Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 лип 2024
- Since his first appearance in 1887, Sherlock Holmes featured in four full-length novels and 56 short stories. In the century and a half to follow, Sherlock would be portrayed countless times in the media, on stage, on the radio, and of course, on screen.
In this video, we explore why Sherlock Holmes, though not the first fictional detective on the screen, he has become the most portrayed (human) literary character in film and television, as recognized by the Guinness World Records. We also look at some of the most popular portrayals of the iconic character over the years, from William Gillette to Basil Rathbone, to Jeremy Brett, to Benedict Cumberbatch. Most recently, Sherlock is a secondary character in the 2020 film, Enola Holmes. There are hundreds of depictions of the detective that we’ve yet to explore, not to mention of John Watson, James Moriarty, and Irene Adler.
What is your favorite Sherlock Holmes story?

Jeremy Brett's portrayal of Sherlock Holmes is and will always be my favorite!
Yeeesss
I mean he is objectively the best.
The absolute best!
Jeremy Brett's portrayal of Sherlock Holmes is and will always be the best ever, not just somebody's favorite if you ask me.
Only after 5 minutes of watching Brett, I realize he IS the Sherlock from my childhood imagination of Sherlock after reading of the book.
Fun fact: the late Sir Christopher Lee is, to our knowledge, the only actor to play three different Arthur Conan Doyle characters in his lifetime: Sherlock Holmes, Mycroft Holmes and Sir Henry Baskerville.
Once you've seen Jeremy Brett in the role, no one else will do.
Jeremy Brett to Sherlock Holmes is like David Suchet to Hercule Poirot.
I've never seen such good Sherlock-Coverage than Hbomberguys Video, even though the start is establishing-Context too-much (but that's easy to overcome with a small skip).
Spot on with both points.
Brett is Holmes, Suchet is Poirot. And both came within 5 years of each other on British tv. Golden era.
My absolute favorite is Jeremy Brett's sherlock. Love his soul in the part.
Jeremy Brett - the greatest portrayal of Holmes by a longshot.
My wife and I saw him play Holmes on the stage and were lucky enough to meet him afterwards. Really nice guy, such a shame he had such poor health.
@@batman51You sir are a very lucky batman.I would have loved to meet Jeremy Brett.Man was an acting genius. You will always have that grand memory.Very Cool.
Sir Jeremy Brett the one and only quintessential Mr. Sherlock Holmes 🙏🙏🙏
I've never seen such good Sherlock-Coverage than Hbomberguys Video, even though the start is establishing-Context too-much (but that's easy to overcome with a small skip).
It saddens me that Jeremy Brett died so young and suffered in health. It is further regrettable that the producers made wasted his limited time on such awful episodes as “The Last Vampyre”, “The Eligible Bachelor”, and “The Three Gables” when they could have focussed their efforts on making “The Valley of Fear”. The world lost such a beautiful and talented actor before his time.
Jeremy Brett IS undoubtedly the most Definitive Sherlock Holmes. His performances as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s super sleuth are still unrivaled for me. I grew up watching the Granada series, the best Sherlock series ever. Jeremy Brett is simply a brilliant actor and, in my opinion, so underrated by the British film industry. BAFTA keeps refusing to grant him the posthumous award. I refuse to use the past tense because, for me, his presence lives on. And he is indeed the BEST Maxim de Winter in 1979 TV version of “Rebecca” by Daphne du Maurier (BBC).
Кому как
To me, Basil Rathbone will always be THE Sherlock Holmes, grew up with that one...
Your analysis of this literary opus is beyond words, especially the time given to the research. Keep it up ❤️
Jeremy Brett is definitely my favorite
Jeremy Brett is the best of the men who played Sherlock Holmes, not only that but the series IS definitely based on the actual novels and short stories. One of my favorite literary characters!
No doubt Jeremy Brett is the best & my favorite all time.
My favorite Sherlock Holmes actor Jeremy Brett
My favorite Conan Doyle Holmes story would probably be The Hound of The Baskervilles (although I love them all)
My favorite Holmes pastiche would probably be Lindsay Faye’s ‘Dust and Shadows: An Account of The Ripper Killings by Dr John H. Watson.’
JEREMY BRETT IS THE DEFINATIVE HOLMES. ACCORDING TO CONAN DOYLES DAUGHTER BRETT WAS THE HOLMES OF HER CHILDHOOD
Pretty good video. Two portrayals that I think are worth mentioning: 1) Robert Stephens in Billy Wilder's criminally underrated "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes" which, to my knowledge, is the first film to portray Holmes' use of drugs. 2) Vasili Livanov from the Soviet film series which are some of the best adaptations of Conan Doyle's works.
They all did a great job and I still miss Elementary and Guy Ritchies movies, wish there was more with Downey and Jude Law.
Also noteworthy is the 1954 television series starring Ronald Howard as Holmes, it was the first American television series to adapt the novels, and was comprised of mostly original stories.
My fav adaptations: Jeremy Brett, Douglas Wilmer, and Ron Howard(just for the laughs)
We enjoyed the black and white Ron Howard, son of Leslie Howard, adaption of Sherlock Holmes. It was faithful to the short stories. Today the ground has been gone over so many times that the adoptions aren't very faithful anymore.
I have been eagerly waiting for your review on Sherlock Holmes! Your video surely did not disappoint. Sherlock Holmes 🕵️♂️ has always been one of my favorite books. I love all the intelligent comments and observations Sherlock gave, and the humor! 😄 Although I can watch some of the other portrayals of Sherlock Holmes, I still think that Jeremy Brett was the Best because he really captured the true essence of THE Sherlock Holmes.
Only, Sherlock Holmes, can replace, Jeremy Brett
The character of Sherlock Holmes is probably gonna stay as a staple detective character well into the centuries to come. I mean, it’s already happened now
Well done! Eille Norwood, John Barrymore, and especially the duo of Vasily Livanov and Vitaly Solomin can not be left out of any short discussion of important Holmes portrayals, but this is well said and better researched than most others I've seen. My "A-Z List of Sherlock Holmes Performers" has presently passed 8,600 entries, will nearly 20,000 photos, so to make a short presentation for me this well would be quite a difficult task. So kudos to your efforts.
No mention of the wonderful version by Christopher Plummer in 1979's MURDER BY DECREE? I consider his portrayal to be one of the best.
yes that movie is so underrated
my favorite character ever, can't wait to watch this!
btw i think that jeremy brett is the best sherlock ever
Really enjoyed the Ron Howard version. It was faithful to the original short stories. It's been available for free on Tubi and Roku lately.
A big fan of Jeremy Brett. That was flat-out amazing.
I liked Freeman's interpretation of Watson a lot more then cumberbatch's interpretation of Holmes. Especially after the first season.
I enjoyed Enola Holmes and Cavell's version of Holmes.
Jeremy Brett is the best Sherlock Holmes
Another awesome video!! Love learning about more adaptations
Johnny Lee Miller in Elementary is fascinating
Thank you for another great video!
Why does everyone who talks about Sherlock Holmes forget to mention Matt Frewer's portrayal in the 2000 TV movie "Hound of the Baskervilles"?
So cool. I was waiting for this🥰
My favorite portrayal of Holmes is by Ronald Howard in the 1950s TV show. A low-budget British/French production, many of the episodes aren't all that good, but it does have a few really good episodes, and Howard's portrayal is a delight, even in the lesser episodes.
No Basil of Baker Street? Not even a mention? 😢
In my opinion, Jeremy Brett is THE television Sherlock Holmes, with Clive Merrison's radio portrayal a close second. As a kid, I enjoyed Basil Rathbone, but his stories deviate from the books too much.
In a different sense, "Without a Clue" could be a worth seeing film on Holmes and Watson 😂
Also worth looking up: 1976's "The Seven-Per-Cent Soultion." Nicholas Meyer's novel and Nicol Williamson's Holmes portrayal laid the groundwork for all the athletic, jumpy, drug-using Holmes' we've seen since. Robert Duvall's Watson presented a break from the baffled, clueless Watsons which preceded him.
Fav is for sure Cumberbatch but love Basil. My husband and I were shocked that we fell in love with Johnny Lee Miller’s version. Thanks for this video!
The loss of the Peter Cushing series is tragic. 6 out of 16 remain.
But I hear the Russian series is really good. But it isn't subtitled or dubbed.
The Russian Sherlock Holmes TV series (starring Vasily Livanov) is available on UA-cam with English subtitles. Just write in the search bar: "Russian Sherlock Holmes starring Vasily Livanov with English subtitles".
@@alexandersedov9896 when did they do that? Nevermind, my afternoon is now booked.
@@DarthArachnious I don't know why, but before, English subtitles disappeared from these UA-cam films several times. Maybe because of the copyright? But now everything is legal. The Lenfilm film studio has uploaded the series to UA-cam.
I agree. I love Peter Cushing as Holmes. And also the Russian series!
Downey - looks like Ricky Ricardo. Cumberbatch - Amadeus' nerdy brother.
Please make a video about contribution of Arthur Conan Doyle in criminal investigation specially on his fictional character sherlock holme😊
Thanks for sharing!
I love Basil Rathbone's portrayal but
Great video as always! Could you do an analysis on The Hunchback of Notre Dame please 😊👍
But what about the russian version of 1979? It is good, loved, famous and also has some rewards (including reward for the main actor from the queen).
Jeremy Brett gets my vote.
Robert Stephens whimsical but well acted version in The Private Life of Sherlocks Holmes get an honourable thumbs up from me.
Once again, I love your video but find myself longing for more! This vid could have easily been over 20min if it was a little more comprehensive. Still, well done and thank you!
1954 series by Ronald Howard was a delight .
Jeremy Brett is like some actors that once you watched them, you cannot accept any others. I feel Donny Jr and Benedict's portrayal of Sherlock is a person not belonging to the same era of Conan Dole.
Do Moriarty next
We know who is the best Moriarty. Andrew Scott, of course.
One of them
I always liked George Zucco’s portrayal of Professor Moriarty myself. It’s interesting that he’s only in three of the original Conan Doyle stories but he’s such an iconic villain.
Probably my favorite pastiche non Conan Doyle story with the professor would have to be Kim Newman’s story
‘Moriarty: The Hound of The DeUbervilles.’
I can say I've never had the honor of watching every Sherlock actor portray him but it of the few I have, Downy Jr, is #1 Cumberbatch is #2
Over the radio, I admired Sir John Gielgud in the role.
Jeremy Brett was without a doubt Sherlock Holmes incarnate ❤️
Benedict Cumberbatch 🔥
You are missing one of the best if not the best On-Screen Sherlock , by Vasily Livanov MBE .
My favorite is Jonny Lee Miller
👍🙌
Will you a video on Edgar Rice Burroughs's Tarzan?
I've never seen such good Sherlock-Coverage than Hbomberguys Video, even though the start is establishing-Context too-much (but that's easy to overcome with a small skip).
Jeremy for the real times, re thought in our times jonnie lee miller
Hugh Laurie played the roll best
My favorite Version of Sherlock Holmes is from BC sherlock
Me too
Not going to lie my favorite Sherlock is the Robert Downey Jr version it gives him more depth in his physical prowess as a boxer along with his cynical yet comedic personality. But I too also enjoy the Benedict Cumberbatch version although the idea that he sold lacks emotion that he's never been with a woman and clearly at his 30 plus years of age is a little odd
You left out Matt Frewer's potrayal of Sherlock Holmes in a film version of "Hound of the Baskervilles"
Jeremy Barrett is the best Sherlock Holmes forever.
Only scratched the surface? Ah, that must be the reason that Charlton Hestons' turn in Hound of The Baskervilles from a BBC production is missing. Wooden, by the numbers, simply awful effort. I tried to watch it, but turned to greener pastures after about 20 minutes. No doubt, all copies have been sought out and destroyed by Heston or his estate, if there is one.
Not they upset bc they made Sherlock nice 🤣🤣🤣🥴☠️
Those version were still under copyright.
I really don’t understand why didn’t you tell anything about the Soviet Version… It is the best version of SH.
The British version of 1980s is very bad…
