Jeremy Brett most certainly, the first two chapters seasons Adventures and Return are the absolute prime of Sherlock adaptations. Sadly the latter two seasons Case-Book and Memoirs are not up to par. The cast, the settings and costumes are so accurate they seamlessly blend to the original illustrations used for the credits.
Great video. I would pick Brett as my favorite with Rathbone #2. Honorable mention should go to Roland Howard from the 1950's TV show and Christopher Plummer from the film Murder by Decree.

I can live with Rathbone, even if his performance is very much of his time. Bruce, on the other hand, is nothing like the Watson from the stories; what's worse is that his buffoonish take lond dominated the perception of Watson as an imbecile.
I liked Ronald Howard as Sherlock Holmes in the 50s series. But 'A Study in Terror' - Sherlock Holmes finding Jack the Ripper - the characters of Holmes, Watson, Lestrade, and Mycroft Holmes all look the closest to Paget's illustrations of them, which is really cool to see. And it's got a young Dame Judi Dench!
G'day..I truly like " A Study In Terror ". Did you know that " Frank Finlay " reprised his role as Inspector Lestrade In MURDER BY DECREE. Another Holmes Vs Ripper movie, this time with Christopher Plummer as Holmes? It also had Anthony Quale as Commissioner Warren & John Gielgud as the PM..🙂👍
Jeremy Brett is my absolute favorite. He is a dead ringer for the magazine illustrations & therefore the illustrations that accompany many of the book adaptations. Rathbone was awfully good, too, but Brett's actually follow the original stories pretty closely, even though the events are embellished a bit, to compliment the television episode format. Some parts are lengthened & some are cut, but they always (usually) feel consistent with the short stories they portray. Another favorite of mine is Michael Caine - even though it's not a traditional interpretation.
I am exactly like you, about avoiding watching "Sherlock" for a long time (and finally watched it to fall hard) and still avoiding "Elementary. " I agree your choices of the 3 best Holmes, but I still like to add Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, too. (And please do the foreign Holmes list!)

There have been some great actors who portrayed Holmes, Basil Rathbone, Jeremy Brett, and so on, but my favorite portrayal has to be Ronald Howard from the 1950s British/French TV series. And some of the episodes, short as they were, are actually pretty good, although not all of them were.
Great video!! You must absolutely watch Elementary. After Brett, Jonny Lee Miller might be my favorite Holmes. Over the course of 7 seasons, you see Holmes become human and sympathetic. First Brett and then Miller.
It's a toss up between Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett, both give excellent portrayals of the iconic detective. The only real difference between the two was that Rathbone's performances were more approachable and Brett was more standoffish and brusque.
Basil Rathbone and Benedict Cumberbach have my vote. I really like Robert Downey Jr., but Sherlock Holmes is not an action hero! He's a cerebral detective. Also, you left out Nicole Williamson in Seven percent solution. One of my favorite movies. Love your videos very much.
Marina, you forgot about Matt Frewer, who played Sherlock Holmes in "The Hound of the Baskervilles" (2000), "The Sign of the Four" and "The Royal Scandal" (2001), and "The Case of the Whitechapel Vampire" (2002). Also, please make a video on ALL the actors who have played James Bond.
Sorry, I haven’t seen the latest version of SH‼️ I haven’t any desire to view the modern versions. Holmes belongs in his proper time period. Just my opinion, of which I’m still entitled.
In my opinion Jeremy Brett is unsurpassed. Downey jr. is laughably bad. I appreciate Cumberbatch as a modern take. A believable Holmes MUST be tall and lean. Many who tried are of average height or less, and it just doesn’t work.
