  • spoilers I just got done with my first playthrough of Red Dead Redemption 2 as Arthur Morgan with Low Honor. I have to say it has changed my way of looking at morality. In this video I explore that, along with details of the strange man and how that correlates to the ending in my eyes.

I’ve never played a full low honor playthrough in rdr 2. I’d start out bad but when Arthur gets sick I do a full 180 in my honor ever since my first ever playthrough. I absolutely refuse to see Arthur die any other way. A story that has such an impact on my own view on a fictional character and in my own way fight to make sure he turns out good, to honor his wishes- just goes to show how how amazing rockstar is at story telling

more of the same, low honor to high honor spew because ppl are not willing to gain a new outlook of perspectives when trying to do a full low honor playthrough but can't blame ppl like you in the RDR community because of how Rockstar chose to prioritise their writing of the Honor system in RDR2...

I'm gonna be honest, I'm a very nice guy, but for some reason, the npcs decide to call me jackass, fool and say other offensive things and since I'm loaded with guns, I just blast them 😅. Apart from that and the ocasional npc walking in front of my galloping horse, I always make the high honor choice

That feeling is real there’s a real sense of loss you experience seeing a character you invested so much time into and watched them change also all the legendary trapper cloths all the progress and all the things you weren’t able to do with Arthur are also gone with him so that feeling of loss is felt in a literal loss of time and progress along with a well written character and story it makes the death feel real because you as the player feel genuine loss.
It’s actually an incredible life lesson, sometimes we make plans and they don’t happen or we feel like we miss out on “what could have been” but what matters most is how we spend our lives and the end of our lives, spreading small acts of love and kindness will go a long way and the people you help along the way will remember you for your actions.

Currently doing my second play through and even though I swore I’d play low honour, I just can’t bring myself to do it. I feel it would be betraying Arthur’s true self - although he’s a cynical and grouchy outlaw, I think he’s a softie at heart and always tries to do the right thing. The ‘A ❤ M’ in his journal after seeing Mary shattered my heart, he deserved so much better. I already know I’m gonna sob again when it comes to the final showdown! Arthur is Rockstar’s best character, without a shadow of a doubt.

The way Micah sinks his knife into Arthur's chest- the fire all around them, you can hear the pain in Arthur's voice- THE WAY MICAH PUSHES THE KNIFE IN AND KILLS HIM?? The "damn us both!" in the other one and Micah's maniacal laughing- holy shit. the voice actors did a phenomenal job god fucking damn-- this is without a doubt the greatest game I've ever had the pleasure of playing 10/10

Truly both the low honor endings are absolutely gut wrenching and leave you telling yourself "I wish I did better..."
During Arthur's last ride you'll notice how the music is not just sad but also scary and chilling as opposed to when he has high honor which is a nice detail.
When you make Arthur dishonorable it's like you're taking away his true self, his dignity, his genuinity etc...
All things considered I'm glad you at least chose to help John at the end which was basically like an atonement. Arthur has a great place in my heart as one of the best video game protagonists and It would wound me to see him go out bad...

Arthur still dies from that stab wound in his side but Micah slinks off and Arthur gets to see the rising sun and doesn’t get stabbed in the back face down in the mud and rain.

What an astoundingly excellent video essay. Bravo. I have long since 100%’d the game, and scoured the entire map, but the bit about the poem showed me that there is still so much I had left uncovered.
Like you, I played my first play through low honor, seeing it like another GTA. After the ending, it didn’t sit right with me, so I sought to play again while doing all I could to keep Arthur alive as long as possible. I took advantage of the glitch that lets you get to black water as Arthur and explored the map as him as I felt he should be the one to experience those moments. Come to find out, the devs must have thought of this as I noticed Arthur has unique dialogue options, and diary entries in those locations.
This game changed my life, and I mourn the fact that I have finished it. This video perfectly highlights why. It’s amazing to watch others play the game for the first time and see them appreciate the beauty of this wonderfully tragic story. It’s hard to bring my self to play the game again for these reasons, but I look hopefully towards the future when another game might give me that feeling all over again.

What a wonderful comment. Really. Thank you for writing it. It’s interesting how I see so many people say they could never have done a low honor play through ever - but the ones who do end up being really impacted and immediately think about doing another play through of the game. I’ll have to check out the Blaxkwater glitch! Is that on pc?
I loved reading this! I hope rdr3 is around the corner and they knock it out of the park. This game stays in a league of its own for me.

@@PremoSaysThings Appreciate the reply! I originally played this game as a murder-hobo, killing any and every NPC I crossed paths with just because I could. I had the cool guns, the fast horses, and I was the untouchable main character. They were all just NPCs with no contribution other than to serve me in some way. There are so few games that impress any meaningful repercussions on the player that I had assumed this game would be no different. The life that the writers have painstakingly breathed into this game is unmatched. It's one thing to have a honor system, but it's a whole other to have dialogue interactions, cut scenes, and missing or further developed characters to back it up. When you help a guy out, and he ends up thanking you in another area much later in the game, you feel it. For me, one moment that sticks out is finding Downes' wife as a prostitute in Annesburg. There is no reason to have her there, or to continue her story other than to make you feel something. Further, her way of life sadly does make some sense as to what you might expect to have happened historically.
It's been a while since I've played, so I don't know if the method to get to Blackwater as Arthur still exists or has been since patched, but I played on PS4 when I did it. Usually I've found games get patched on PC before consoles, so I wouldn't be surprised if you can still do it. I haven't opened the game since I took Arthur as far as possible in 2019 or so. That said, the fact that you can make a video all this time later, and I can watch it and still get flooded with all the feelings I felt playing it for the first time speaks magnitudes not only to the writing of the game, but also for your effort in composing a video essay in your own time about your own thoughts and feelings while experiencing the story yourself. So thank you for that and please do continue making quality content such as this.

The second play through was in first person, and I made every bad decision no matter what… it was a profoundly different experience. Honesty it felt like two completely different games.
I’ve beaten it a few times since then and done whatever I wanted since then, but I’ll never forget those two play throughs. They are forever etched in my memory as the two possible pillars of this games potential.
If you haven’t done a full play through with low honor, give it a go. I recommend it highly. The dialogue is different, the missions are different, all the characters in the game treat you different… it’s a different game.
I’m doing a play through currently on the PS5 and I’m doing everything and taking my time doing so. It’s been wonderful collecting specific animal pelts to make the gear I want. Upgrading each camp fully before moving on. Also, as per tradition… doing everything I can to mess with and hurt Micah the whole time.
Thanks for the awesome content, it’s awesome so many people still connect over this game.

I have had serious have fun with the way I make Arthur conduct himself throughout the chapters. You craft your redemption arc with the honor system. I personally like to play Arthur as slightly more dishonorable, helping people usually out of pity, or for some sort of return forcibly or not, then eventually stop being a tool to folks near the last few chapters. I’ll still save jimmy brooks though

Seeing that last clip of the coyote descending into a cave (symbolic for hell perhaps?) made me feel genuinely sick to my stomach
But at the same time as horrible an ending for Arthur as this was, it is a brutal gut punch that at the end of the day he was just a man, no amount of “protagonist” status would protect him from that, he died the same way so many nameless npcs that you’d kill in a low honour play through do :’) and that’s pretty poetic, however soul crushing

However, I also feel it made me a better person and changed my life for the better. I was never a bad person and I would say I was raised well, but it made me rethink my purpose in this world. I started helping people, volunteering, adopted a dog, I donate blood regularly, I donate money to charity, I give my old clothes, electronics and furniture to people in need. All of that resulted in meeting new people and business opportunities. I went from not knowing where I'm headed in my life at 21 to owning a house and my dream car at 25. I still love giving back to people, making them happy, seeing them smile and being genuinely grateful for even the smallest things. Give and it will come back to you!

Great video! I noticed myself doing the same IRL after playing this game. I played it originally when I was 16 so right/wrong and consequences both short and long term was something I was still coming to grips with lol.
On my first playthrough I had high honor in every chapter, it just seemed like it was more canon than low honor in regards to Arthur's personality and morals, or as much morals that an outlaw could hope to have. I still remember the last mission vividly five years on. Running up that hill and seeing my horse die (a white arabian I had had since Chapter 2) made me burst with tears as if I had lost a real animal. Tears eunning down my face, trying to battle Micah on that cliff, sweating so profusely that I could barely grip the controller to spam the buttons quick enough. Finally losing the battle and the song (forget the name) slowly fades in as Arthur looks out into the sunrise. I've never been touched by a piece of media so strongly before or since.
On my PC playthrough I've been putting off completing the story for three years now and just do one mission every few months because I cant bring myself to go through that final sequence again. An amazing story that defines exactly why Rockstar as the king of this industry.

    GREAT VIDEO.
I very rarely comment on UA-cam vids but your video was great.
Everything you said in this vid is true, it's all fun and games until you realise it isn't.

Premo your not the only one. I replayed it 3 times, after playing the 3rd time I realized where I went wrong and made me think differently about everything this game is just a brilliant piece of art, exploring the vast wild west, great game indeed.

I think that final ride to the camp was the scene that had the largest impact for me. One moment of calm reflection where you really can feel what Arthur is feeling, you experience what he’s experiencing. It’s a powerful moment and it’s the one that I think about most.

First game ever to make me cry, and i played it at a speacial time in my life, life changing experience. It affected me in a way i never would expected, i cried again wathing this video. I finished the Arthur part a month ago, and i have a hard time returning to it and play the epilogue with John, like the paroxysm of the game has past and i feel too involded to actually keep playing. I will probably go back to it at some point, just not ready yet. I even saw the elk in my dreams. shit as i'm writing this i feel emotional, i'm a changed man.

I made a comment on another RDR2 UA-camrs channel like 2 days ago and it was about this exact feeling after my first play through. I sat in my room, crying (I usually don’t get overly emotional) just thinking about how Arthur deserved so much more. Like you said, no piece of media has made me contemplate my own morality like RDR2 has.

Bro I ain’t gonna lie I was tearing up the whole ride and then when Dutch left I was cold and Micah shot me I was in full shock. Absolutely insane. Much appreciation for the wonderful comment. Arthur did deserve more, I think it shocked me so much because somewhere I was thinking “this is more like it would happen in reality”

i played rdr1 back when i was younger with my xbox360, i didn’t really appreciate the story for the depth it had cause i was just a lil kid who liked the cowboy shootin game lol. but when i saw they were making rdr2, i was fuckin ecstatic man. i talked about it literally all the time from when i saw the first trailer until it released and was savin up money to buy it but my sister ended up gettin it for me for christmas (which is the soonest i’ve ever had a new game also) and i started playin it that day. when i tell you this game made me emotional, man it’s the only game i’ve ever played thats made me actually cry. i thought i loved rdr1 but i’ve put over 30 days of play time into rdr2 and have beaten like 5 times at this point, and i still cry every time. especially at the scene you get at the train station with Sister Calderon

By far the best game I've ever played. So many amazing moments in the middle of the night, when you ride home and the music comes in. The emotional ups and downs, great and sad moments. When my horse died I was in tears. Devestated. I love this game. Just love it.

    What a fantastic video
Whats really great too is that its looking at everything through fresh eyes with only one playthrough
My first playthrough ended the exact same way and i couldnt believe it
But it made my second high honour playthrough very rewarding

Finished my first playthrough an hour ago and I must say it was a surreal experience. I've never felt such a way seing a fictional character die, he was such a good man this Arthur Morgan. I did quite a high honor playthrough where I in every choice did what I would've done. Truely an amazing game and amazing ending, I got the ending where Arthur dies in the sunset and the music starts playing. This video did him justice, thank you!
