Great job guys! Thank you! “Always assume it’s live!”
First class installation Mike, Peter & Daniel. 👍🏻 In typical Mikey Pipes fashion, done in record time. That looks like nice quality equipment, and it sure runs quiet. As I watch the job proceed I’m standing at my wonderful Bosch gas range / convection oven, it’s near 20 yrs old and as perfect as the day I installed it. A bit earlier today I was using my Bosch cordless drill. 😁 I’m a big fan of their products, I positively like Bosch! I like The Pipe Doctor too.
Keep up the good work Mikey! Happy Friday!
Exactly how I wired my surge protector into my disconnect using 10G Wagos 👍👍
Excellent job guys. Nice installation on the new Bosch unit. I think those concrete pads were there from the past. Keep up the good work and make the trades great again. #LoveBosch #LetsGoBosch
Sweet install!😊
I wish Pioe Doctor would come to Ct. I want this system for my house. Beautiful installation to great work,.
Great Video! Bosch is the best!
@@PipeDoctor Bosch great for dry climates, and very efficient regarding heating BUt it doenst, can’t and wasn’t designed to handle much latent- very size, noise, f efficiency in heating months-designed to preserve that coil set point. But doenst s really care what the humidity is. For trunk seasons in mid Atlantic or anywhere the southwest it’s really a poor choice. For Denver, utah, great choice. It’s doenst communicate with thermostat , and not fully variable. Sure you can buy a dehumidifier but that negates all teh Efficiency . , price new and small size benefitsright //

Nice informative video THX!
Had 2 Surge Protectors Added to Furnace and Outdoor AC Unit on 6/16/23. New Equipment was installed 20 months ago but Surge Protectors were Backordered.
Glad I came across your videos. Thinking about switching over and having a hard time finding any hvac techs that will actually install a heat pump here on Long Island.
I’m a bit further out in suffolk county, so hopefully you travel (willing to pay extra for travel cost and time and lunch) just so I can get a solid installer that knows what they’re doing!
Will try to give you a call!
Where on Long Island are you?
@@PipeDoctor Ridge (right off William Floyd parkway by brookhaven national lab) - exit 68 on LIE. Lol
Because of watching you I have started and like using stay brite 8.
That said why do you use SB8 sometimes and then braze sometimes ?
😮 That's tight 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
Heat pumps in north east!!? Make me wonder. At the end it’s what the customer wants!!! Great job Mike!!
R-22 heat pumps did not produce a lot of heat. The modern R-410 heat pumps work much better in the winter. I have a 4 ton heat pump, 2014, 14 SEER, and it works great, with no back up electric heater. I live in Portland Oregon, so it does reach 20F some nights each year.
However these Bosch with a variable speed compressor, they are going to use a fraction of the power of my 10 year old heat pump. My unit is 16 - 17 amps, where the 3 ton unit they showed is only about 6 amps! So my unit is a little over 4 amps per ton of cooling capacity, while the Bosch is only about 2 amps per ton for the 3 ton unit!
So my R-410 unit works great at 10F or so. At 5F, it will start to struggle a little. While a Bosch unit will work fine, even at -10F, because it has a variable speed compressor, and can run faster on a very cold night!
For the old oil heating, it is 1 gallon of oil to provide about 100,000 Btu's of heat into the home. For a 14 SEER heat pump like I have it is about 8 KW per 100,000 Btu's of heat. For the Bosch unit, it would be about 5 KW per 100,000 Btu's of heat.
So at $0.15 per KW, it is only $0.75 to provide 100,000 But's of heat, VS pay for 1 gallon of home heating oil, at about $4 or $5 this winter?
Could you install a rectorseal surge protector on the indoor air handler in the switch box to protect the ECM motor? I would assume it would be wired just like the outdoor disconnect just with a switch
Correct
To anyone saying negative things about the refrigerant for the daikin system. R410a is going to be replaced by a "flammable"" refrigerant within the upcoming year. 🤷🏽♂️
Hey Mikey, what brand was Daniels new torch kit?
R32 is standard in europe. Never had issues. No new installs are done using r410a anymore, unless we talking about big vrv systems and commercial system.
Why does the IDS Light (14.5 SEER) inverter get paired to the “fixed” single stage handler? What do you think about that? I dont understand pairing a inverter with a psc.
Hey Mike did you have bad experience with staybrite solder that you decide to braze this one? I'm considering using that method in some applications. Great install in such a short time.
I’m wondering this as well
Havent installed a bosch inverter yet. I like the bosch water sourced heat pumps (Florida heat pump). Still unsure on Inverter units, I know some manufacturers have had issues with proper oil return/killing the compressor. LG Inverter refrigerators, huge problems with those linear compressors and crap Inverter boards.
What are the waygos for? Is it basically a wire nut
Bosch greentherm tankless vs ao smith tankless.....your thoughts?
I hope you have better luck with Daikin than we have had. My company was a Daikin dealer for many years. Lots of control board issues
Is Bosch ever gonna make the air handler communicating too? Like trane
I hear the Kentucky journeyman’s license test is no easy task as well. Have you ever considered installing a large VRF system
So the homeowner is just having the Bosh installed but not run until they get the ductwork installed or is he planning to just cool off the Attic? I am confused.
#love Bosch
me too
Not always an option on tight installs but I have learned from my hispanic brothers that help me if you can roll out both freon lines and thermostat wire and pre tape. It takes a little more time to get them put in but it saves in the long run especially if you have 3-4 guys that can help
Thanks for sharing your feedback
Can a 2.0 be upgraded to a 2.1? It seems like only the wireless unit would need to be added.
We have a Bosch IDS 2.0 5 ton unit at our house and I was wondering if you have any tips for cleaning the outside condenser unit safely, or if you already have a video about annual maintenance on these units that includes cleaning the outside unit. Thanks!
I do have a video just do a search under the channel
These heat pumps heat like no other. Only unit I will install to replace an oil system.
Are these inverter systems more susceptible to power surges vs regular old style compressors? Reason I ask is because I've never installed a surge protector on my single stage non-heatpump systems.
We install surge protectors on our installations
Thanks -- I'm curious about the Bosch IDS 2 but have a question about sizing: Currently, I have two single stage AC very old systems, both 2 tons, with one being a furnace and the other a heat strip for heat, . I want to replace both with a Bosch IDS 2 3 ton but baffled on what size the air handler should be? Should I match the air handler to the heat pump which would make them 3 tons even though what I currently have is a 2 ton, each zone cooling and heating 900 sq? I can see being oversized helping with heat but what about being oversized for cooling and that resulting in humidity?
The Bosch line of equipment is a bit different. They have a 3 and a 5 ton outdoor unit only. Dip switches on the control board dictate if they run a ton lower (2 or 4 ton instead). So, if you have a 2 ton originally, I’d keep a 2 ton air handler with the 3 ton ids2.1 series heat pump.
If you have any more questions or to know that your are getting exactly what you need, your local Bosch dealer/contractor should be able to help
It really depends on how many square feet you are trying to cool. Also how many cubic feet of air capacity your ductwork can handle. So lets say you have 2 tons, with a normal airflow of 800 cubic feet per minute, and you want to upgrade to 3 tons or 1,200 cubic feet of air per minute. If the air duct is exactly 12" X 12", then the flow rate now is 800 feet per minute, so sort of noisy, but still acceptable. So if you increase to 1,200 cubic feet per minute, then the air speed will go up to 1,200 feet per minute, and be really noisy going through the air ducts.
If the air duct is 12" X 18" then only about 600 feet per minute at 800 CFM and 800 feet per minute at 1,200 CFM.
So you might need to have a couple more air ducts installed on your 2 ton system to reach the minimal airflow required for a 3 ton unit.
How many square feet is your home? So I have 1,800 square feet and 4 tons of cooling capacity. That is 425 square feet of space per ton of cooling capacity. If you are in a humid area, that can be to many square feet per ton of cooling capacity, and may result in less run time than required to dehumidify the air. The reason I got such a large unit is the heating mode. I live in Portland Oregon, so humidity is not a problem in the summer. Many times the square feet per ton of cooling, when the home is well insulated, it is 500 square feet per ton, or even 550 or 600 square feet per ton. The more square feet per ton, the longer it will take to cool the room from 78F to 75F on a hot day.
Then there is a consideration of the back up heat. You stated that you already have a gas furnace on one unit, and that might be helpful if you live in a area that gets below 0F in the winter. You can buy a thermostat that will determine your outdoor air temperature, some use a wi-fi and check the weather channel to determine the outside air temp, some use a outdoor air temperature sensor, they can be wired or wireless, so need a new battery every fall. When it is below about 15F, the heat pump can shut off, and run the gas furnace only.
Of course your unit that has electric heat, you want to run the heat pump mode all the time, even at -10F outside, it will save money compared to running all electric heater.
So if your home is less than 2,200 square feet, then 6 tons of cooling is way to much. If you are at 3,000 square feet, then 6 tons is going to be great!
My suggestions is to replace the unit with the electric heater first. It is the very most expensive to run in the winter. So you will save the most money with that unit.
I got one last fall. Will I see any energy savings compared to my old 14 seer unit? I got the Bosch mostly for the heat (backup in winter for oil).
yes
@@PipeDoctor After using it in hot weather it doesn't seem to be removing humidity very well. I was under the impression that these inverter units could run at a slower "dry" mode like mini-splits. They sized it as a 4-ton for the heat, previous A/C was 2.5 ton and kept the house super dry at 76*, but ran all day long. I'm at 72* and it seems damp.
@@HubjeepThat is the major issue with these
i have been wonder what size breaker do u put in for bosch 3 ton
30
How many refrigerators and freezers have hydrocarbon refrigerants
Have you installed any carrier infinity heat pump systems?
@@PipeDoctor would you agree carrier i of its controls humidity better (unsurprisingly as its fully variable, both units, fully communicating) than Bosch but it is more expensive and takes more time to commission?
Bosch had a great reputation back in the 80s. Some people believe that German engineers are the best.
No doubts, it is a great company....
I totally agree
I totally agree & @DCHVAC too
Been using R32 here in UK for over 3 years now going to R290 . Been using Bosch for years but made by Midea Chinese company and badged for Bosch .
its been around longer.
I wonder how long those clips will last after being in the sun for a while
Why you didn't use StayBrite8 for brazing ?
Staybrite isn't used in brazing , it's used in soldering 1000 degrees less temp
That Bosch Thermostat I have had problems with, better off with a simple Honeywell thermostat. Bosch wants 1 cycle per hour and I found the Bosch Thermostat allows to many cycles per hour. Much better dehumidification and temp control with Honeywell.
I live up in Minnesota. I cannot get one contractor to recommend the Bosch IDS system in the Minneapolis metro area. Is the Bosch system no good in really cold weather when paired with a gas furnace or is it something else? Any insight would be helpful.
I've found that some people are intimidated by technology. I reckon you are experiencing that.
How does the pipe doctor and co feel about Mitsubishi hyper heat equipment?
Got the same question
When will Bosch offer a communicating system
Mike. R32 is already a component of R410a.
Have you ever had to replace a surge protector?.. presumably because it saved the unit.
Yup! We did a replacement about 3 weeks ago
When is Bosch converting to t9 R32?

Your install passable... Now.... what makes it light years ahead of anyone else is you do things correctly... and everyone else does shit work. So whats that saying???? "Hacks bring me Stacks!!!!" Never more true here.. Im not gonna say great job... its a good job which makes it great against the dismal competition.. NICE WORK! Thanks for not being a HACK!!!!
TruBlu hoses and the BluVac are the best. On new line sets near 50’ I’m under 200 microns with my 8 CFM Field Piece in 3-5 minutes seems to be the norm.
Yeah it’s pretty darn fast
@@PipeDoctor those that don’t use this set up are the ones that think we are the ones talking smack, little do they know.
Wants space to work. That is not odd. I agree with owner wholly.
Yes the more room the better. If customer oks it then you are safe to leave room so a drill can access all the screws. Pain in the ass when you gotta bend over, lean down and try to login up a screw from the side covers. Plus it will make it easy to take apart and clean
What model was the air handler?
@@PipeDoctor Thanks, was confused by the sudden BOVB instead of BOVA on the condenser. Did not know if you could mix the connected new model.
i have 2 unit daikin in Slovakia 8yers not service. Only cleaning indoor and outdoor unit.
How have they held so far? Our unit was installed in November of last year and I had to call the service techs to check in on a cooling issue. A week later, they replaced the thermostat (eccobee), replaced the compressor, and they still can not figure it out. Guy has been on the phone with Bosch tech support for hours. I'm beginning to wonder if I went with the wrong brand, especially since it has been less than a year.
@@PipeDoctor Sounds like it. They are now thinking it's the computer board on the air handler, which is a Carrier not a Bosch. I wish they would have installed both units as the same brand.
@@greenghopper there’s your problem you should not be mixing equipment. It should all be the same brand.
@@VacMaster2020 it ended up being a faulty wire between the handler and compressor. In the end I ended up with a new compressor, computer board for the handler and an upgraded thermostat. For no charge, so no complaints
Not only that but new EPA guidelines will require the new A2L refrigerants
Are these systems pretty much plug n play? I'm considering going with this brand but don't know it will work seamlessly with my current system
Yes, these systems are designed to be plug n play, making it easy for you to set up and use with your current system. Give it a try!

Does Bosch have a muffler? Ours creates some strange harmonic sounds at certain frequencies

@@PipeDoctor yes. Heat mode only
R-32 is already in the make up of 410A. I’m pretty sure R-32 is only going to be in daikin products since they have the patent and R-290 is going to be in all others at first.
So he had you install the unit itself and going to have someone else do the ductwork.
what no propress on the line set.
Bosch IDS 2.1 question....How does compressor Inverter speed coordinate with evap coil fan speed to accomplish efficient air dehumidification. Or is the evap fan single stage only??
@@PipeDoctor my question was more about summer operation regarding dehumidification
@@PipeDoctor so does that mean your outdoor unit stays on all the time?
The outdoor unit modulates based on indoor coil pressure - which is impacted by load on the coil. (airflow, temp and humidity) The indoor fan can be staged - using y1 and y2 terminals, and indoor fan speeds also changed to fine tune the system. can also adjust target coil temp down ("accelerated cooling" they call it) which changes performance.
@@Jon-hx7pe I see. Thanks for your reply.
@@Jon-hx7pe IMHO i would prefer constant air flow across evap coil to maximize dehumidification and let the compressor follow the desired superheat/subcooling pressure limits. But honestly I don't have enough understanding of Inverter technology after years of single stage operation which I am sure is not as efficient.
so this unit is basically the 2.0 but it's now a fully communicating system??
Not a communicating system from my understanding, communicating systems run on 2 insulated wires at least on Lenox systems. I think this is like the Gree, which just adjust condenser speeds to reach optimal run time and superheat
The Gree runs on 5 thermostat wires
@@PipeDoctor appreciate the education Mr. Pipes
I hate burst the owners bubble but that unit is made by Midea and bosch just puts their lable on its

Heat pumps are only good for states were the temps don't drop below 30 degrees. Both me and my daughter live in Maine and we had heat pumps installed last summer and we tried only using the heat pumps to heat our homes and our electricity bills were through the roof. Double of what it would have cost if we had used our oil furnaces. We will only use them for AC from now on.
And it gets colder than 30 degrees on long island. Agree with you
My Bosch Heat Pump operates down to 5 degrees, (I live in Minnesota) then switches over to the furnace. It is noticeably reducing my electric bill, and is whisper quiet. I love it.
That simply isnt true at all.
wrong information - the technology has changed and there are heatpumps that have good capacity and efficiency well below 30f. What drives heatpump operating costs through the roof is use of electric supplemental heating elements.
