And in addition to that, the rewards from these events are still relevant, therefore, maps from previous expansions are not death. As much as I love FFXIV for example, it feels depressing when you explore a new map and you are basically alone the whole time. Then you have the urge to take a break in Limsa Lominsa in order to feel like you are playing an MMO

I've played GW2 since the first beta. I naturally ended up burning out and taking off for months at a time (I didnt even start End of Dragons until 3 weeks ago. I went an entire YEAR without logging in).
However, any time my friends play MMOs and say,. "It would be so much better if the game did X like this. No game does that." I always get to say, "Guild Wars 2 does."
I have always said that GW2 does (almost) everything right. It is the ideal MMORPG.

World Bosses, and the dynamic scaling of events, while not unique to GW2 is something I think is handled better in GW2 than any other MMO I've played. Example of super epic world boss- fighting the water dragon at the Harvest Temple in EoD. it's basically a 50 man raid.

the no server maintenance/going down thing i only recently fully appreciated - after another online game i play requires 5 hrs patch time when it updates every 1.5 months, and my friend said the game she plays requires 8 hrs patch update time. until i had to deal with that in other games myself, i literally never thought about how ridiculous and amazing it is that gw2 servers never goes down for patches. its really hard to believe that this is a feature thats there since like 10 years ago, and meanwhile still many games nowadays dont have this feature. sometimes its so easy to not notice or forget such huge things if you've played for so long that you take it for granted!

    • @Atlas3060

In the 10+ years of GW2's history, there was I think 1 time where our servers went down, albeit briefly.
It was for a very short while, I think barely a day. Then after it was done their IT guy posted a blog explanation of the cascading problems that lead to this.
1 event in all those years. Kind of staggering to think of that.

Enjoy it! But also have patience. Try to have a pace. The game has more than a decade of content available, and you might get lost. The good news is: the community is absolutely lovely (always have exceptions). You can ask questions on open chats and you can be damn sure a good soul will either answer or even help you out directly giving their time for that. It is just the GW2 way of playing. I also recommend (if you're going to buy the expansions) to be even more patient. Maybe reach level 80 on the "vanilla game way" - no mounts, no level 80 boost -, just play and progress until you reach endgame, and then get your mounts and experience the game for real. For any endgame content that will be pretty good. You will have learned the game for real, and mainly, your class, your character and even the game story which is absolutely amazing. It is totally worth it!!

  • @PhantomBlank

They also outplayed the competition in building a world that encourages cooperation and a close knit, friendly community that tries to help each other. A total noob with no skills can find someone to help mentor them, or a guild that won't kick them out for being underpowered. There is no spawn camping of players, to ruin your day. And they made it so that if you cannot spare long hours at the computer, you can still participate in metas and major events and still get rewards, you just can do it in smaller bites with less time spent glued to the screen.

  • @aldindavis6834

The customization of combat is something that I think is hugely underappreciated. In most MMOs, your class is limited to a singular weapon type (staves for mages, sword/shield for warrior, bows for ranger, etc etc). But each class has a plethora of weapons they can use to define their playstyle. You can put swords on a mage class like the mesmer, and conversely put a staff in the hands of a heavy armored class like the revenant. The way that each class has multiple different ways that they can be played gives a large number of ways that you can customize your combat.

    • @duncanrobertson6472
      @duncanrobertson6472 Рік тому

Good point. Connected with this - the number of playstyles that are actually relevant is pretty staggering. Especially when you consider all the builds across pvp, wvw, and the various types of pve, there's dozens of "optimal" builds, and hundreds of viable ones. I think a lot of people miss out by not trying things.

GW2 is the game that has a story I cannot get enough of. I deeply enjoy every release because not only is it seeing new things it is always revisiting familiar things - be they faces or places really. It is also the most accessible game for me. I play with a low intensity build because I have significant problems with my hands and I can still engage in content like everyone else. The community is also fabulously enfolding. The moment you say you need help there's generally someone willing to either point you in the right direction or come along to show you the way. The resources available through the wiki and GW2 efficiency are top tier too. I can't get the total package that is GW2 to me anywhere else.

    • @vidya2144
      @vidya2144 Рік тому +4

Really? Gw2's story is probably one of, if not, the weakest element, especially the latest expansion EoD. Its world building is great, but the actual narrative story itself? Pretty terrible. Written by blue-haired activists and soyboys who couldn't make it to CW's writing positions, and that's saying something.
It's like witnessing a budget version of a CW drama..

    • @traveling.down.the.road56
      @traveling.down.the.road56 Рік тому +3

Although I don't think that the story writing is one of GW2's strongest points, I don't dislike it either, and generally look forward to seeing what the next story chapter is going to be like. But for some, like vidya2144, and others, the story is bad, or too "inclusive" for their liking. That's more their problem, than a problem for most of the players. It's good to hear that you are able to enjoy the game, even though you have some physical limitations that make gaming challenging. I feel that GW2 tries to please a wide variety of players, which they sometimes get criticized for, because some players wish they would narrow the game to please a certain segment instead, saying that trying to please a wide audience only makes the game less than ideal for any segment of players.

Just saying "there is no holy trinity" is simply wrong. To clarify: In endgame fractals (5 man instanced) you always bring a healer and a supporter (player that sacrifices some personal dps to buff the team). In strikes and raids (10 man instanced) you'll usually have 2 healers and 2 supports and one of the healers also tanks - there is a designated tank in almost every 10 man fight.
In open world however you don't need any setup, the metas are designed easy enough to almost always ensure success if you have a big blob of people (and you can choose to play support or heal too to make it even smoother).

  • @mareksroka5629
    @mareksroka5629 11 місяців тому

One thing that could be also mentionned: GW2 rewards participation. If you join an event or meta and it eventually fails, you still get some loot and some xp.
Even raids and stike missions award some of the relevant currency if you lose, based on the progression you managed to acheive. The time spent training to beat an encouter isn't lost.

And the legendary equipment that looks like what a real legendary should look like. Not just a fancy model, but unique effects, animations, trails, sounds and other means to transform your look when you finally get them, on top of a great quality of life boost.
And the class system that gives space to a lot of build craft and character customization. Everyone could tinker with specializations, weapon skills, utility skills, gear stats, runes etc. to create a build that fits any role in the game or any roleplay on all of the 9 classes.
And despite that, balance is also pretty good.

I think IF I added together all of those sub fee's I've paid to be able to log in for 1 hour on days when I didn't have time to play just to log in, I'd have enough to buy several other games. Sub fees are the "gotcha" of the games. You committed, so you have to play or you wasted your money. Rinse and repeat the same type stuff day after day trying to grind the same thing has taken the place of offerring a new activity in a game to keep you occupied and it's become so "normalized" that people think nothing now of paying for a game and running the same dailies EVERY single login and think that they're getting their money's worth.

The thing that made me come back to gw2 and stay is world exploration. Open world can actually be challenging, and the maps are insanely cool to navigate. With mounts, masteries, and a lot of vertical stuff with maps that are as deep/high as they are wide. So much secret locations, that you can play the game for years and still surprise yourself with a new place on a map you player thousand times

While most hate underwater combat, just the underwater exploration alone and finding deep caverns and sunken ships and all kinds of stuff beneath the surface of the waters is purely amazing. You mentioned break bar damage (with the Springer) but didn't really go into the fact that there's no hard trinity in GW2. You are never waiting for a healer or a tank when you want to group up for a dungeon or other small group type activities like fractals, strike missions, or raids (as opposed to large group activities like the open-world map world bosses or WvW game mode). The "soft" trinity is damage, support, and control. Support is more than just healing and includes specializations that focus on providing boons [buffs] to the group like damage boosts, incoming damage reduction, cooldown reduction, and increased movement speed in addition to augmenting the heal skill slot that all characters have with plain healing. Control focused builds bring skills that either CCs the enemies or - for larger enemies - damages the break bar until even they get stunned. There's very few enemies (if any left) that are just straight up immune to crowd control effects unlike other MMOs.

Additional points that I can think of:
    1. No defined trinity of tank-dmg-healer.
usually if you wanna be a healer, u will go Priest-related class and be useless all game in exploring the world n complete missions alone cuz ur dmg suck.. But not in GW2.. everyone can be anything.
    2. no long grindy story quests and side quests + no conventional quest givers
this helps when u wanna have multiple char and it wont feel burnt out repeat dozens and dozens of quests
    3. Transmute
make u look cool in other equipments while wearing diff equipments
    4. Weapon + Skills
diff classes can wield same weapons but have diff skills. which is pretty cool. the utility skills are only 4~5 skill that you can select so ur skillbars are not cluttered with tons n tons of skills quickslot
    5. changeable Elites
usually games when upgrade ur class, you are stuck with it. but in GW2, we can easily change Elite anytime we want depend on our mood. some day you wanna be Deadeye just pew pew from afar, some day you wanna be Daredevil getting up close and vent all your angers onto the enemies.

The combat system of GW2 is also something awesome to talk about. Some games (lookin at you, WoW) have/used to have combat that you had to stand there and cast/swing/shoot your weapons. GW2 you can freely move around while attacking the enemy.
There are two different PvP kind of areas in the game too. PvP and WvW. PvP is just that. Player versus player. WvW is World Vs. World. In PvP, you can join in at lvl 2 and still do well against lvl 80's decked out in legendary stuff. Honestly this game is so much fun and I'm happy I have been playing this game for a decade now.
One more thing: The community is 100% great. Sure, there are a few trolls out there but at least it isn't childish spam and tons of "your mom" jokes. Also, new players are always encouraged to ask questions even if it seems like a stupid question!

my personal favorite thing is the music, how it feels fitting for place, it changes for combat and sometimes I'm sad to mount up and go away from a fight because that stops combat music. My brother showed me the game, showed me Fear not this Night and I fell in love with it even before I knew english. Guild wars 2 will be my first and last MMO ever. I keep hearing that other games have subsciptions for thing gw2 guarantees, other games have worse mounts, and I can't get to new content if I don't grind for the newest gear, and gw2 spoiled me in this sense. I couldn't live without these, without the familiar songs that I'll listen to outside the game, the fashion sense of this game, and how I grew up with it. It might not be for everyone I'll admit, and I'd like to hear a similar experience with an another MMO

I wouldn’t say GW2 outplayed its competition but it knows what the majority wants and why they are still playing. The MMO genre being usually targeted at people who don’t mind having to grind endlessly and sometimes having to pay monthly subscription, GW2 breaks all of that by offering a horizontal progression and no subscription. In a way GW2 allows more casual players to be able to enjoy MMO despite having a life outside the game and this is something only long time players will realize unfortunately.

Or the heart where u catch some crabs for the local, or the heart that u train with the militia in Queensdale. These hearts really help building the world of Tyria, making it more lively

    GW2 veteran since launch here!
Mounts actually have weight. They have cute idle animations. They have quests where you even raise some of them/etc. They feel ALIVE and like companions, and it's magnificent.
    - I also want to praise the revive system. ANYONE can do it. There's even achievement rewards and stuff for doing so. You press one button and it gets someone up. Play long enough and reviving someone is as much second nature as breathing.
    - You can help anyone at anytime with combat. One thing I don't like about ffxiv is the lack of the similar revive system and being unable to help other players fight unless you're in a party or it's like a FATE or something. I also deeply prefer GW2's teleportation system & fees.
    - Fashion Wars: Things you unlock, you unlock. It's ACCOUNT WIDE. This game is VERY alt friendly contrary to ffxiv, and is superior in it's "glam/glamour" system with 'Wardrobe' and outfits. At the very least in the management of it. The fact that the clothes I'm WEARING aren't still in my inventory is A+
    - Underwater combat: Super cool. Under-utilized, but still just as cool and fun as land-combat imo. I find the Mesmer's and Guardian's animations especially beautiful. Plus the movement, it's as fluid as the water.
    - Downed abilities: You go down, you have a good chance, a chance at all for that matter, to get back up. I love the entire getting downed system.
    - NO SILENT PROTAGONIST: Oh. My. GOSH! do I adore this. I love love love that my fully customizable character has a voice for once. It's been even more fun since it became open-world since Heart of Thorns. Not only are you fully voiced, but each race & gender has their own unique voice. My personal favorites are the female Asura and male Sylvari (I main a Sylvari mesmer). It makes my character feel ALIVE. I like having some personality. I don't need to imagine every little aspect. There are even some people who can't create/hear voices when they think anyways. I wanna feel a part of the word not like cardboard. Unless I'm a character who can't speak, I always prefer a voice xD
Been playing this game since it's launched, adore it. Also love the video! It's very engaging!

I play gw2 and I think it's one of the best or the best mmo at the moment.
But I think you have to be 100% transparent about these things if you really want to get people to play something.
Certainly gw2 will not have a subscription, but if you didn't play in the seasons that the "living worlds" were given away, these are some great DLC that you have to pay to play them. Certainly you can pay them with in-game gold or directly with your local steam currency (to give an example). Currently this is changed, for small expansions (the one on August 22 for example, which is just a payment).
On everything else, I agree with you.

    • @xvoidgamer

Just go, explore and make your own adventure). On question, if your lvl 80 gear remains relevant, what is there to look for once you have a decent set? Do you need specialized gear for the different content? Cheers!

For fractals you need to have for example special infusion you do not need for other content. If you have great gear (ascendend gear for example, there is no need to get legendaries or other ascended gear) I built myself a legendary soly because it looked badass. I will do the same for the new legendary armor that will come out. It's more an experience thing in this game than a vertical progression marathon. Once you have great gear you can just relax and enjoy every content the game has to offer (except maybe fractals and raids)

Im sorry, but there is little to no EverQuest in GW2. Im not sure how you're not aware of this, but the hearts on the map are quests and yes, there's a map and minimap. GW2 is just as much a pinball machine with the map markers as any other modern MMORPG. There is no making your own adventure in GW2 like EQ. In EQ you had adventures with other people by exploring the world and it's systems. Remember when you had to talk to other people in-game to increase your language skill in order to read books in other languages? Where's the exploration like that in GW2? In GW2 it's, again, just as solo as the rest of the modern MMORPGs.

    Hi there.
I am in seven month late, but glad I ran into your video.
First off I am a main FF14 player, and play other Mmo`s as well. I am very happy I do, which gives me some knowledge . I play Retail WoW on the side just questing as I do not want to be part of the raiding community in that Mmo - I raid in 14. I have played ESO on Playstation since it came out on PS4 and have over 10k hours on it - combined PS4 and PS5.
I just got into GW2 and compared to other Mmo`s GW2 wins. As you said yourself "subscription" and no downtime on servers. It´s a big plus.
The combat side of things is more a personal thing and agree on, what you are saying. I want to add something you did not mention, and that is skill gap. There is almost non in GW2 and people I have interacted with say max 7% from new player to max level. That´s where GW2 and FF14 shines, they have two way´s doing that. ESO on the other hand is total opposite to WoW, 14 and Gw2.
ESO have a huge skill cap between a new player and a higher lvl player, witch can be seen in content like dungeons, where new player´s are mixed with higher lvl player´s, who downright ignoring new player´s (take a look at the forums). It goes really wrong, when a new player are after a skill point by doing a dungeon quest (skill points are very important in ESO). Mostly high lvl player´s just ignores a new player. There are a lot of posts on the forums, where new player´s are not able to get access to the dungeon quest, and get their skill point. Kill stealing is also a thing in ESO very much, which I do not see in WoW, FF14 or GW2.
This brings me to another thing, witch is the community it self. Questing in WoW have for me been very positive, and been meeting some very nice and helpful people. I will not touch much on FF14, as a lot of Mmo player´s already know how good and helpful that community is.
The community in GW2 is very much like the FF14 community from, what I have gathered so fare. I haven´t seen any kill stealing, bad behavior, grief, like I have seen in ESO. People seems to get along very well in GW2, and that is very big plus in my book.
I got my first mount in GW2 at lvl 10 as a trial, and just went ahead and bought the, whole package, as I want to continue to play GW2, and reached lvl 20.
There is not a lot of mounts to earn in ESO besides Godslayer and some other trials. The rest is up to you, to buy from the cash shop. In Wow I got my first mount very fast, but don´t remember, when. In FF14 they throw mounts at you, and as I do extreme trials I have more I could wish fore.
If you as a new player want to get into Mmo´s. GW2 is the way to go, and I say this as a main FF14 player. You can not go wrong.
Thank You for a very good video and enjoy.
    Lokkee

One thing that GW2 does that outplays the competition is a much, much, MUCH more friendly community.
Most players in GW2 have shown an eagerness to teach newer players how to play and/or answer questions that are asked. In other MMOs that I've played (Not naming names here) whenever I ask for help with part of the game I usually get the replys "Get gud!" or "Get higher item levels you noob!" and other such comments that feel degrading and lower my enjoyment with the game and I end up leaving.

I'm not saying that because "oh no, community horrible." It's just people being normal people. People from FF14 like to say the same thing (it's the MMO I started in, and have played the most), and it is equally untrue.

@@chadmeckstroth4394 I mean to each their own. I just think GW2 does a better job with mounts, with the map system and Waypoints/teleporting system, questing, and the jumping mechanic is sooo much better than FF14. (the jumping in FF14 makes me so freakin mad because of the lack of control I have while jumping) so jumping puzzles are also better in GW2 imo for this reason. Achievements/collections are really fun in GW2 also, I never could get into them in FF14. Also, I HATE that I can't do my MSQs with friends... like it's all solo and they can't come with me to help me fight stuff, and my friends can't watch the story scenes WITH me. I actually had a huge problem playing with a couple of friends of mine because I kept skipping through dialog because I hate reading (that's another thing I love about GW2 is there's voice acting throughout the whole story which FF14 doesn't have) and it caused a rift because they were getting upset with me for getting further into the story than them and they also would yell at me for accidentally giving away spoilers because I never knew how far along in the dialog they were... The whole experience was a mess. In GW2, you can go into story instances WITH your friends and experience the cut scenes and dialog at the same time so there's no worries about accidentally giving away spoilers, plus your friends can help you fight stuff too which I love. Also, I've had bad experiences with social interactions in FF14 whereas I haven't had such issues with GW2 community. (Maybe it's because the community in FF14 is bigger therefore more creepers and crazies) Kinda makes me glad that GW2 isn't as popular as FF14. lol So there's my 2 cents on that. :p But again, to each their own.
