Ummatics Colloquium: Muslim Disunion in the Era of the Nation-State

Professor Joseph Kaminski presents his first paper for the Ummatics Institute, titled “Irredeemable Failure: The Modern Nation-State as a Nullifier of Ummatic Unity.” The paper argues that the modern nation-state has failed in most of the Muslim world for many structural reasons and that there is no salvaging it for Muslims who desire to have Islam serve as the locus of socio-political and economic unity. It details how the nation-state is a source of #Ummatic disunity, the political and institutional failures in the Muslim-majority world, and the contemporary civilizational challenges Muslims now face. It advocates for Muslims to think outside the box, recognize that the nation-state is an irredeemable failure for #Muslims, and instead focus on theorizing and eventually forging new paths.
