John Jorgensen pulls it off perfectly on his Telecaster along with Davey and his Les Paul. Both amazing talent. Thank you for this video. You're phenomenal!
My friends and I saw Davey with Alice Cooper. Alice introduced each band member and when he got to” the man in the Foster Grants” (Johnstone), Davey cranked out a few bars of this song. Yes. Superb!
There's a video of Davey with Alice and he plays a few riffs from Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting when Alice introduces him. ua-cam.com/video/Kbz7ZI6S6oU/v-deo.html
Simply awesome playing, Marcos. I've been playing this song on piano and guitar for 30 years, it may be Elton's greatest song, in my book. But I'm nowhere near the lead guitarist you are, and that fast run of 16th notes at 1:58 has had me frustrated and perplexed for DECADES! I used to hack around a Dm run to try to approximate it, but it sounds like you've got the real thing. It's mixed kind of low in the song at that point, making it even harder to figure out. If Marcos won't give us a tab, let me write down what I think he's doing - he's so fast that even when you set UA-cam to 0.25 playback speed, it's STILL hard to see exactly what notes he is hitting. So here''s my guess - Marcos, please correct me if I'm wong!: (16th notes starting on 5th string): Bb-A-Bb-C ---> (4th & 3rd strings): D-E-F-G ---> (3rd string) Bb-A-G-F ---> E-D-C then bend 3rd string 7th fret to 9th (E) Or for those who prefer a tab: E B G 0 - 3 - 2 - 0 - 7 (bend-9) D 0 - 2 - 3 - 3 - 2 - 0 - A 1 - 0 -1 -3 3 - E I think that's it - but the problem for me is it's still too fast for my fingers at live speed! Anyway, hope that helps all of those of us out there who hope to play like Marcos (and Davey) one day.
1507/5000 I thank you for your kind words and considerations, and thank you for sharing your experience on this subject, very nice. Your tab is 100% correct. My problem for giving tips is that I don't speak a lot of English (I'm Brazilian and I speak Portuguese) and I end up having to use the Google translator for this, and as we know, it doesn't always translate correctly, especially when we use musical terminology . The tip in this phrase of the guitar in question is to connect the notes - "pull-off and hammer-on" - do not strike every note, this will truncate the phrasing. Congratulations, your perception is excellent and I wish you luck in the study. This song is one of my favorites but I didn't know that there were so many people interested in it when I posted it. Thank you for posting this tab so that others can also know the lick in question. If youtube were not so restrictive and also agreed to put jpeg images in the comments, it might be easier to exchange ideas and things like that, but it is getting harder and harder to post since they are removing or blocking several videos of me and others for appearing in the background the original music. I don’t monetize my youtube account and I don’t earn a cent from my posts, I like to share and also because it helps me remember how I play these songs myself, sometimes I forget and watching my own videos, I have a kind collection to remember the shapes, phrases and tricks that I used when I learned the song. Best wishes from Brazil!
Marco, a lot of people try to cover this. These licks are so hard to do right. But you murdered this! There is nothing better that hearing a Gibson Les Paul screaming! After hearing the sound of your playing this I decided to Bluetooth this to my Bowers & Wilkins Home theater system. Everyone in my neighborhood now now’s who you are as I was booming this! Respect!
Outstanding! I’ve never expected a guitar cover for this Elton John track. I’ve always been fascinated by the electric guitar recorded in this song. Just like the guitar work in “Werewolves Of London” and “Lawyers, Guns, and Money” by Warren Zevon. Another awesome guitar track is Blue Oyster Cult’s “Shooting Shark”, the 1983 album long version.
Sounds good Marcos. Davey Johnstone has been one of my favorite guitarists for many years. He's terribly underrated as a musician. Thanks for the video! 👍🎸
Thanks a million, Pal, that was a work of art. I have watched it 20 times and finally I can play the first three bars. I didn't realize Davey Johnstone could burn up a guitar like that.
I never appreciated Elton John when I was young. I saw it as pop piano music. I didn't realize how great the guitar playing was until recently. Been loving this tune and All the Girls Love Alice. Great cover/lesson. I can now learn to play it the right way. Thanks for posting!
Remarkable playing. You do a great rendition of the song. Thank you for posting this. You have given me hope that I might be able to learn how to play some of it.
Outstanding! One of the best guitar videos I've seen. Such attention to detail and you finger the guitar like a pro. I just watched another video of the song and I couldn't bear to look at the guys fat fingers misplaying the chords. Thank you!!!!!!
Okay I'm going to use the microphone so I hope this comes out okay when I was a young boy I love the guitar and wound up at a much older guys house a friend of my brother's called Jim erstad who played Elton John love-lies-bleeding for me and it was the greatest thing that I had ever seen and inspired me to play guitar this brings back such fun memories it's awesome and I'm going to learn how to play it thanks
My experience hearing it for the first time was a little different than yours, but the way the song impressed me was the same. And all these years later, it's still among my top ten favorite songs of all time. Davey Johnstone: a stunningly accomplished yet so underappreciated rock guitarist.
I have watched this over and over a few times already, and I'm sure I'll watch in a hundred times -- but bravo, brother. Nothing but respect. I'm old as hell. I was ten and rocking out to the live version of LLB that is immortalized on Elton's "Here and There." I'm a self-taught guitarist with far less talent than you, but my ears are good. I know enough to know you had some early little misses on this (I could almost overhear you thinking, "damn it!) -- and I know enough to know that at 3:32, you find the groove hard. You get and stay locked in to a degree that blows me the fuck away. Isn't music awesome? :) Major, major, major respect, Marcos. Davey would be proud as hell. Keep going, my man.
Thank you my friend. I'm 57 years old, I've been self-taught since I was a teenager, I studied guitar a little to expand my knowledge only when I was almost 30, since, as you know, we could only learn and develop our musical ear perception with LPs and cassettes , there was no internet, I don't have much skill or ease with computers, my recording equipment is also very old and not ideal, but I use it like this so I can record and remember how I learned the song a long time ago after. The intention was never to be perfect in sound or execution, although I try to get it as good as possible with the limited equipment I have. I'm glad it was the subject of your attention in a positive way. Greetings from Brazil.
Awesome. Can’t TY enough for the wonderful rendition, a trip for me down that lane of transition to Adulting, as they say now. 🥹🙄👍💪🏻 Riff still SENDS me 🤯So wonderfully talented you are, TY for sharing! 👍👌😎
