U R right, cole. in 72 coming on LP only, not as single! The soft parts of this songs are so good and perfectly in harmony with the true hardRock parts
My big sister took me to one of the concerts on Yellow Brick Road tour (US), Kiki Dee was with Elton John. We weren't far from his elbow as he sat at the piano. I was about13, maybe 14 years old, and I remember the show, and my sister and I were so happy, singing along. Long time gone. Peace
There's not many things this song doesn't have. I bought Goodbye Yellow Brick Road on my birthday, November 1st 1973. Some many perfectly orchestrated songs. The lyrics, the vocals, top notch musical group. This was and is rock and roll.
I was somewhere around 7 years old, on the way home from the drive-in in my Mom's old wood-paneled station wagon- we were listening to her 8-track (Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, of course) when all of a sudden, "Funeral for a Friend" broke off into this mad piano intro and guitar riff - and I remember like it was yesterday, my skin broke out in goosebumps & my heart started pounding & baby, that was all she wrote! From that day forward, Rock-n-Roll has been pounding in my head, my heart, my LIFE! Elton John- you did this. Thank God for you.
Was good in his day, but after” curtains,” which was absolutely amazing, I haven’t heard any drumming with ej that that is anything but mediocre .if there’s a song you can cite please tell me and I’ll check it out. This whole album, but especially this song reminds me of my childhood. I remember first hearing this song, in the late 80's when I was a little little kid. My mom were blasting this so loud, it was also a nice day, spring was coming, and they were doing garden stuff.. I remember being really crazy happy that day, because I had gotten an awesome set of Crayola crayons, and I just drew so much (still draw) and the smell of the flowers being planted lavender, everything was so bright and loud. I fell in love with the sound of the guitar, and bass in this song. I remember all of it, like it was yesterday, whenever I hear this song. ^_^
@Madeleine Hague I remember thinking the same thing. Johnstone's work on "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", and Mick Ronson's amazing performance on "Slaughter on 10the Avenue" were great examples of one of the best eras for electric guitar in rock history: the early '70's.
One of the best albums ever recorded. Bernie and Elton were on fire then. Gosh from 1970 to 78 I was the biggest Elton fan. He changed my life. Have Albums, CD's of all his albums. Truly my legend in life and music.
I thumbed to see the Philadelphia freedom concert for the Bicentennial it was so worth it Billie Jean King came onstage and everyone flipped! Great memories ❤️😺
Just heard Metallica cover.... needed to hear this to cleanse my palatte... this rocks so much harder..if you disagree, you don't know crap. Period. You don't know what makes something rock hard. And it's not distortion
This was Elton’s opening vocal at Maple Leaf Gardens and the crowd went Rat shit crazy with a single spotlight on Elton’s piano . We often forget what a force this man was in the 70s ........
This is a great song that I only discovered last year, but let's just face it: Elton John is the BEST singer/performer of ALL TIME! The amount of GREAT songs he has is ridiculous...
I have a funny story with this Song Which I was completely anaware of until around 2003/4. A friend of mine used to download EJ's Songs that I still hadn't known, burn them on a CD-R and give it to me at school as a sort of gift, since we found out we shared the same teste for music. I remember he kept talking about this Song for days on end. One day he gave the CD which contained this Song among others. I got home from school, played track by track, but since FFAF never "started", I assumed it must be an instrumental just like Song For Guy. I think only the following day, after having been listening to the CD for hours and skipping Funeral, I aciddently let it play or maybe I pressed Fast Forward button to make sure what the Song was about, and then I suddenly became obsessed with this Song, from intro to outro. I couldn't believe my ears! I had been an EJ fan for 3 or 4 years then, and I thought I had already known his best songs. I was sooo wrong. Fortunately!
Lyrics: The roses in the window box Have tilted to one side Everything about this house Was born to grow and die Oh it doesn't seem a year ago To this very day You said I'm sorry honey If I don't change the pace I can't face another day And love lies bleeding in my hand Oh it kills me to think of you with another man I was playing rock and roll and you were just a fan But my guitar couldn't hold you So I split the band Love lies bleeding in my hands I wonder if those changes Have left a scar on you Like all the burning hoops of fire That you and I passed through You're a bluebird on a telegraph line I hope you're happy now Well if the wind of change comes down your way girl You'll make it back somehow And love lies bleeding in my hand Oh it kills me to think of you with another man I was playing rock and roll and you were just a fan But my guitar couldn't hold you So I split the band Love lies bleeding in my hands And love lies bleeding in my hand Oh it kills me to think of you with another man I was playing rock and roll and you were just a fan But my guitar couldn't hold you So I split the band Love lies bleeding in my hands Love lies bleeding in my hand

One of the best albums ever. I was just a young chap of 12 when it came out and not yet really interested in music. A few years later, however, I walked into a Peaches Record store in St. Louis and bought it. Back in the day.
Awesong song, seen Elton along with Billy Joel face to face way back in the early 2000's. Was my first concert, this song was included. Honestly, one of my favorite tracks of all time. Just perfection in every way. The bassline alone has it's own life and story. Just stunning.
This could actually be his best song

I think the same 💙
Absolutely!!!
This is actually his best song, but it has to be played along with Funeral for a Friend.
Anki Hansen - Nah. Ever since I was a kid, I always skipped over ‘Funeral...’ to get to this one.
One of the best songs of all time.
That's true of every song according to someone in the comment section.
Mike Rossi yeah mike this song rocks
😂 Right Mark, every song someone loves it so much. 😉
On 8track tape quad
Have to agree👍
The bass player is killing it on this song!!!
The great Dee Murray...unfortunately he left us many years ago...hell of a bass player...
He always killed it.
Everyone is
That's one of the things that makes Elton John different. He was way more bass-driven than guitar.
Fantastic bass vs guitar duality here, indeed.
One of the most iconic guitar riffs of my youth.😌
Do you know the name of the guitarist? Thanks!

Probably one of the Most Underrated Songs by him
One my favourite songs ever. I love the duel between the piano and the lead guitar as well as that thumping bass.
Davey Johnstone on guitar.
Piano cant be rock n roll

Drumming is great also
Yellow brick road and Captain fantastic what an incredible period it was for Elton!
50 years ago! ,, Fifty Years !--- Sounds as fresh as ever, could have been written yesterday..
Yeah, definitely been awhile ☝️
Let's all give a shout out to Nigel Olsson for some phenomenal drumming on this track. Very underrated drummer.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was no doubt the Sgt. Pepper's of the 70's. Love Lies Bleeding is one of my favorites from this album.
He gives me chills absolutely love the 70s.im a youngin born 1987 but this is my shit lol
No. Dark Side of the Moon was.
Sir Elton John was backed up by excellent musicians, since of course he was an excellent musician himself. And still is.
The bass in this song is insane! RIP Dee Murray!
Brilliant guitar by Mr. Davey Johnstone....reminds me a bit of the late, great Mick Ronson - that crunchy, slashy sound.
THE JAM!!!!

My junior year of high school 73-74 memory lane.
I love how the guitar wails like it feels every gut wrenching emotion pouring from Elton's mouth.

Lyrics:
The roses in the window box
Have tilted to one side
Everything about this house
Was born to grow and die
Oh it doesn't seem a year ago
To this very day
You said I'm sorry honey
If I don't change the pace
I can't face another day
And love lies bleeding in my hand
Oh it kills me to think of you with another man
I was playing rock and roll and you were just a fan
But my guitar couldn't hold you
So I split the band
Love lies bleeding in my hands
I wonder if those changes
Have left a scar on you
Like all the burning hoops of fire
That you and I passed through
You're a bluebird on a telegraph line
I hope you're happy now
Well if the wind of change comes down your way girl
You'll make it back somehow
And love lies bleeding in my hand
Oh it kills me to think of you with another man
I was playing rock and roll and you were just a fan
But my guitar couldn't hold you
So I split the band
Love lies bleeding in my hands
And love lies bleeding in my hand
Oh it kills me to think of you with another man
I was playing rock and roll and you were just a fan
But my guitar couldn't hold you
So I split the band
Love lies bleeding in my hands
Love lies bleeding in my hand
