The main avenue in Olongopo, Magsaysay Drive was a place like no other. Rare footage of what took place during the last years before the base closure of U.S. Naval Station, Subic Bay.
November 26, 1974 was my very first liberty in Olongapo City & Subic, that was the start of my dating life of dating Filipina women, Next week will the my 40Th anniversary of my fist Liberty in Olongapo City. I was stationed aboard the USS Blue Ridge LCC-19 which was homeported out of San Diego At that time. It was my very first Westpac cruise, which I would Be in Subic Bay 5 times during that Westpac & twice in Manila for a grand total of 7 times in the Philippines. I met my late wife on January 16, 1975, she was one of 9 Filipina Women I dated, we got married April 5, 1979, we stayed married till she died on March 6, 2010, she was a very Wonderful wife, woman & mother. I will only date Filipina women. Over 31 years of my life I've spent with my late wife. I'm planning to move back to the Philippines for good within theft 3 to 4 years & live out my life there as that is where my heart is.
I lived in the PI from 2012-2016. Unfortunately with the "Bases" no longer there, life there isn't the same as we knew it back in the 70s-80s. But nevertheless, still an enjoyable place to visit.
"T's" Tavern was my bar when I was station dito there from 1987-1989 and it was on Gordon drive or first road to the right before going into Magsaysay main drag. Had so much fun as a young sailor in my late 20's.
Thank for sharing. We owned that Ford Bronco. We also owned 168 Bar and Resto. My dad was the president of Olongapo Business man association and in charge of all the safety and entertainment for the US armed forces. Please post more photos and videos. Thank you for sharing.
I was with the last battle group to visit in '91 before the base closure. We got there ahead of the carrier, so that was great! When we were outbound on PAC we stopped and hauled dependents from Clark Air Base from Subic to Cebu for three days. When we got back it was like it never happened! Great times! Hooter!
I was heavily involved in preaching and doing evangelism on these streets in 1989-1990 before transferring to Baretto and Subic. I was a missionary there and still am but now in Manila.
In 75 the main drag was busy. The Sierra club was popular on the drag. In the Jungle where I hung out, the Harlem & the Ghetto were popular clubs & another club at the end of the main drag as you entered the Jungle was called cloud 9. Then there was the Zig zag & Shakey;s pizza on Rizal as you entered the jungle. Back then olongapo was sort of segregated. On the main drag the most sailors and marines were white while Blacks & Latins hung out in the Jungle. Looks like things changed since 1975.
1989 - it was the year I arrived at Subic. I left when we closed the base. It was my Nexus with a place that has never left my thoughts. I lived on Baloy Beach. I just want to go back.
Hard to find Video from the 80's. I was stationed with VRC-50, Cubi Pt 84 - 87. Best place for tour for any Navy/Marine let alone port for liberty for Fleeties. Lived offbase for much of my time, on Hansen St. Mid 70's - Mid 80's was probably the best for Olongapo, Subic City, Barrio and of course Angeles City. Filmore East, Maraposa, Shaky's Pizza, White Rock Hotel in Barrio...Good Times
I was there from early "66" thru "68" numerous times. It didn't look like that. This footage was filmed in the area called " the jungle ". At the " T " turn left. great liberty. I sure do miss P.I. Alot of jeepneys and don't forget the monkey meat.
Metallica was my favorite bar and San Miguel my favorite PI beer as well! Couldn't stand Red Horse... I was there on deployment from Okinawa with Charlie Co. 9th ESB. Jan-May 1991. Went back to visit in 2005 and it was almost unrecognizable. New sidewalks, much cleaner streets, a new mall at the old 'city market' just over Shit River bridge on the right, and the Metallica building was in ruins w/ the roof collapsed from the ash of Pinatubo. >:-( Semper Fi!
@ Al Brady... Yes, San Miguel beer is still around and available. and the present rate is 42.00/ a dollar...lots of changes around specially at the former Subic Naval Base where it become Subic Bay Freeport Zone w/ lots of improvements such as amusement parks, hotels, industrial zone and the latest was the opening of 2 shopping malls.
There in '74 on MarDet on USS Oriskany (CVA-34). Loved it, wondered of returning some day to retire. Is a foreign national still prohibited from buying a home or business there? The San Miguel in the PI is still my favorite beer anywhere, but the imported San Miguel in the states is a week imposter to the real stuff there. Is there still an American Legion club on the left side going in? Exchange rate was 6.68 to 6.70 peso to the dollar, what is it today? What is the risk assessment for
I was there in April 1989.....if I wud've known this was the best place in the world. ...I wud've got buck wild more....I thought every where we went would be like this.....I WAS WRONG...SMH
My screen name is taken from my favorite bar in Olongapo, the "Metallica Rock Disco". Twin Bose sound wave cannons on the ceiling, jamming out to the tunes, having a cold San Miguel (fuck the Red Horse, that stuff would mess you up), and picking a honeyko to take back to the hotel, or her "house". Totally miss those days, was there in 89 and 91 on westpac, Semper Fi to my Marine brothers from 13th MEU SOC!
TAD 73-74 at Comfaiwestpac Det Cubi Pt, Stationed 76-79 at NAS Cubi Supply Dept., , Schooling for 4X at NAS Cubi Pt when was i in NAF Kadena, Okinawa, Japan 86-89. I like Banaue Supper Club, Zamboanga Super Club, Hot City Disco Club. Jesse, AK1, USN retired and VA/DEA retired from Glendale, CA
wow.... this vid is alright... i miss the old olongapo.... when the US base was still here, magsaysay drive was awesome.... i was in grade 6 this time of this vid, i used to hit on sanitary bazaar for couple of tape recordings of the music those days. then some of the american officers would even give me a buck or two for answering some of their questions.... hehe, those were great.
I was there sometime in August 1990 then back again around Christmas in December 1990 (West Pac / Operation Desert Shield and Storm) USS Okinawa HMM-164. The P.I. where the women were good and the beer was cheap!
42 pisos to the buck ??? Damn!!! I was getting 7 to the dollar black market in 75.... What did a pitcher of Mojo cost you guys???? In 75 a pitcher of Mojo was 21piso
Yeah I miss it the "jungle", Club Harlem, monkey meat, hot poontang and cold San Miguel. Was there 65-66 (PFC-LCPL), Big E Marine Detachment (Shellback) and 75-76 K 3/4 Upper MAU Camp as a Gunny! Overnight liberty in civies on a weekend was a dream "cum" true. LOL Going back in July 2012.
Fellow 0369 Gunny here. I was station-dito with the MB from 1986-1989 with B Co. I went back to live in the PI from 2012-2016.........unfortunately with the "Bases" lone gone, life as we knew the "Po" back in the 60s-80s is no more........Elvis has left the building. --- Semper Fi!!!!!!
