I know a lot of guys in USS Midway my step father Collins used to be on that ship the last time I seen him his name is James Collins and my sons father too Patrick Evans.
I pulled my first liberty in Olongapo in '69 while serving aboard the U.S.S Clarke County LST 601. I was 17. The ship supplied Marine, Army, and Navy bases along the rivers and the coast of Viet Nam until it couldn't do anymore and come to PI for repairs. We would stay three weeks or so go and come back again. 50 years later, I'm back and living as a legal resident in Cebu. Cinderella liberty!

i have been to the Philippines several times,,when i was in the Navy, and after i got out. we visit her family there. i love the PI!! i too plan to retire there. my wife is from the metro manila area. but i want to settle in Laguna. we both like it there!!

I still wish we still had that base. I have made several trips back during the Vietnam era. In fact had to work at Grande Island in 1975 to process refugees when Saigon fell. Finally retired in 1985. Yeah guys I was on of those "lifers" but mighty proud of my service.
Thank you for your service. Nothing to be ashamed of being a "lifer". My 2 younger brothers were career military men (USN and USAF). They have good second careers after their military service, and both are doing very well. I hope you are doing well also and goodluck!
1980 I believe was my first time. Remember hearing "psst" every time you walked into a bar there? I have never been a regular drinker but I sure drank more than my share of San Miguel's. Our ship's party in town was fantastic. USS BREWTON FF-1086. Thank you for the video and thanks to the wonderful people of the Philippines. I can't remember much but what I do remember is great!
Great video. Interesting seeing those maps with areas marked "out of bounds." I was there in 69-70 and was able to travel anywhere. I'll never forget Subic City, Olongapo, Angeles, all of it.

Brown Fox before it burned down, Apple Club with its hallway entrance, 125th st Jazz, Shakey's Pizza, bar hopping on Magsaysay Dr and left to Rizal Ave "Jungle" it was nicknamed then, right to Victory Liner, I could go on, damn great fun and friendly people and great young ladies, ha got lucky and married a SM Shoe Mart cashier!Robert here, DOD in Subic Bay.
Ah yes-the Brown Fox. Consumed a few San Magoo's there & met a lady there also ! And Shakey's-ate in thers a few times. Head up Magsaysay to the traffic circle-take a right up to the open air market at Bahac Bahac-take a left at that circle & head out on the road to Subic-that's where she lived-overlooking Gapo. Our mid DET "break" NAS Cubi Point Dec. 1981.
I do I was in the same time 1971 to 1974 aboard the USS Oriskany. Do you remember Mombasa Kenya? Couldn't get backboard Oriskany so we left on the USS Oklahoma City the morning after. Once we got out to see they heloed us over to the Oriskany. Had breakfast on the Oklahoma City you guys had some Great Chow

2 WestPac cruises, '71 & '72, USS Enterprise CVAN65. Great times in the PI! There will never be anything like Olongapo City was back in the day! As I have always said, no matter who tells you about liberty in the PI, and regardless of how great he says it was, take it from me..... it was MUCH better than that!
Great memories..i was a 19 year old marine at upper mau camp from 73-75..remember the white house club in olongapo.met a besutiful filipina that sold candy and cigarettes in the upstairs lobby.she calmed my young wild ass down somewhat.lisa abella.i will never forget her..😢
Thanks for the memories. I first got to Olongapo Subic Bay in the fall of 1965 my first WESPAC deployment. I was 18 and didn't have a clue of what was in Olongapo. Boy did I learn fast. Too bad we lost the. Base. Yeah I remembered going on Liberty in my Tropical White Long uniform. I was naive but made a lot of friends. Those were my teen years as a young sailor. I was on the USS FORT MARION (LSD-22). Gator navy. I still have dreams to go and see the place again. Maybe bring back a lot of memories. Fair winds and following seas.....
I was on the Niagara Falls AFS3 in 1971, Det 3, CH46 Helos. Then assigned to VRC-50 at Cubi Point shore duty. Jolos was where I met my favorite hook, we lived just south of Whites Beach. Sin city at its best!! Man do I miss those days!
Not a lot of footage from those days. Way before Facebook ha ha... My first visit was 1992, right before the bases closed... but I made up for it... I been living here for 3 years now! Life is good :)
I'll be living back there in Olongapo City myself once I have everything I am selling all sold where I'm at in the damned Loser City Tucson, Mexizona metro area which is the sob story and cheapskate capital of the world. Olongapo City is my top choice of place where I want to live out my life in the Philippines is because I lived there before, more familiar with Olongapo City despite the changes it went through. Then again, I too have also changed as well and went through changes myself. I hope we'll be neighbors in the future.
I was stationed at Cubi Pt late 67 toApr 68 & then back Oct 68 to Sept 69. I used to cross bridge & frist club on right upstairs was Oceans 11. Great band there did Cream, Beatles, Doors and a lot of Motown.Was in HC-7 which was a helo squadron, so we wore civilian clothes & learned some of the language.Great times & old friends.
Stationed there from 66 to 67. NSD Subic Fleet Freight. Great times and lots of memories. People who have never been there often don't understand the like for the place. HA
I was first there on November 25 to 27, 1974 during my very first Westpac. I had duty the first day, but my very first of many Great liberty that I would experience in Olongapo City, the past 40 years 80% of the women that I have dated are Filipina Women, I married one of them 1979 when I was stationed At SRF Subic Bay, that was the very best duty I ever had in the Navy. My late wife & I stayed married 31 years when she Passed away on 3/6/2010. We had 3 children. My late wife was A wonderful woman. We met in 1975. I will only date Filipina women, they are great dates, most make great wives.

Thank you. I enjoyed digitizing and putting together my 8mm movies from my Navy days. I still have several reels from Hong Kong to do. I tried to splice the scenes into a story of sorts. I'm still amazed the Olongapo River looks like it's okay to swim in. The smell was like a cattle feedlot, made my eyes water. I saw a dead pig floating by when I was on shore patrol.
I sure do miss Subic Bay and the fun-filled town of Olongapo City. The first time I was there was 1973 when I was on the USS America CVA-66, and didn't go back until I sailed on the USS Coral Sea CV-43 from 1980-1983. Looking at videos of the town now, made me very sad. Too much of the old town is gone now. All the "fun" spots on Magsaysay and Gordon Ave. Sigh!!!
I was fortunate that I was able to visit olongapo when I deployed on a WestPac in 1986 and again in 1990! Thanks for posting this here, I've lost all of my pictures and videos from my visits there, it's good to watch it because it really brought back a flood of memories! Losing all of my pictures and videos wasn't good, there are a lot of people who don't or can't believe what it was like there and now I can show what it was like then using your video!
Was stationed on Okinawa 77-79. Had 30 days leave on the books. Sgt I knew was married to a Philippina. Stayed with her family for those 30 right across u know what river. In olongapo. What a time. Butterfly knives. Etc. etc.
I was there in 88 with the USS New Orleans. So glad we didn't have to wear our uniforms off the ship then. Great footage, Olongapo has changed quite a bit since those days.
The most fun port in the Pacific. Hong Kong was great too but Subic was my favorite liberty spot. You could have a great liberty just staying on base. My first trip was in 1966 on the USS Ticonderoga and then two more trips in 69 and 70 on the USS Bon Homme Richard. Being young and in the Navy then......life was great.
James, Maybe you could tried to revisit Subic bay. Maybe you go there there during the Christmas holidays. Probably you could fly to Clark international airport and ride the bus that goes to Subic bay.
Enjoyed Olongapo in 68,69. Served aboard the U.S.S Everett F. Larson DD 830. This was my most favorite duty station overseas. This ship was in the South China Sea on June 4th. when the carrier from Australia, HMS Melbourne collided with the Frank E. Evans DD 754 cutting her completely in half between the stacks. 74 sailors I believe went down with her. The Everett F. Larson tied up to the stern to keep it floating until an ocean-going tug from Subic got to the scene to tow the remains back to the base. Later the stern was used for target practice and sinker out side of the channel on a barrier.
i liked the Genisis club,,and the Sierra club. they were my 2 faves in olongapo. but i mostly hung out in subic city. i had a steady girl there. she worked at High Times. which has since changed hands and names a few times.
I was TAD from FICPAC on Ford Island in 64. After going thru the gate then crossing over Shit river, there were kids in the water yelling "Quarter Mister" . the water was so dirty a quarter would disappear as soon as it hit the water! and the kids would keep the coins in there mouths! The only bars I can recall were the TNT and the EAST END CLUB. Having some San Miguel and watching the girls dance with two long poles. Went bowling, the balls were all beat up, after a few frames the pinsetter would wright on the ball TIP PLEASE and if you didn't put a peso or two in the ball's finger holes the kid setting the pins would set the pins all over the place or only put 3 or 4 pins up. Lota fun Bowling! Loved the Monkey Meat! After getting back and going thru ones pockets there would be bunch of washers, given as change from the Jeepney drivers. Olongapo I'll never forget you!!!
Love the part about the off limits areas. That was where you started the night no matter what service you were in. It was also where you found the local cops partying too. Love the hypocrisy of it all.
Thanks for the video upload. Nice to see again the Old Olongapo circa1967. I was 14 years old and remember those sailors in their whites summer uniform on liberty and Shore Patrols will chase them when they go to out of bound areas.
Brings back many great memories. Just about every westpac port call was in Subic and Alongapo for the USS Constellation while I was aboard 1964-67. We were in Hong Kong when the Gulf of Tonkin incident occurred and instead of heading for Australia on our around the world tour we headed for the Gulf of Tonkin where we spent the rest of our flight operations time. I don't regret it though because being in Alongapo as a young man was like being a kid in a candy store with all the friendly girls and cheap San Miguel beer. Talk about happy endings! Shore patrol would usually make sure you made it back to the cattle trucks at closing time to take you back to the ship to recuperate for the next liberty day. Our stays were short, 5-6 days at the most but we made the most of it.
Was on the Constellation for 87 westpac. PI was definitely fun to say the least. Went up into Persian Gulf and the USS Stark got hit. Stayed on station 93 days. Then went to Perth and back to San Diego. 2 ports. That's it. Oh well had fun in PI and Australia.
I watched it and I was wondering if it was late 70s early 80s because, honestly, that place barely seemed to change. I was stationed in the PI 85-88 and the jeeps and cars all looked essentially the same ;)
So happy to get there then so happy to leave. After three days of hard steaming in Olongapo you'd come down with the "Philippine fall aparts" and were thankful to get back underway just to dry out and recover.

My old duty station Rota, Spain isn't the same anymore either. I browsed through on google earth and not even half the watering holes, G. I. bars and clubs are there anymore. My favorite restaurant "Shorty's" gone!
was on the USS Weiss APD-135...Subic,had a lot of fun there in 1963-1964-65 just the start of Vietnam..remember one bar and it was called the "Cave" and how unbelievably hot,felt like i was in the forward hole...but in the "Cave" the San Miguel had frost on the bottles...thanks for the memories....R.
+Richard Botos: I frequented the Cave quite a bit, it was a great bar, owned by an Aussie and he still kept the beer icy cold when I got there. he told me it cost him around $10k to build it and he made tons of money. I was there from 69-70, aboard the USS Belknap (DLG-26). I can still remember the bar kinda curved and the stools were stalagmites and it also had stalactites hanging from the ceiling with lights in them. also the little grotto for the band and dancers. lmao, I'm having a flashback as I type this.

In '71 D'Cave was one of the few bars that had a generator! I met a fancy woman named "Mila." She always wore her hair up. Not young, but SOOoo beautiful!
I remember geting into fights with alot of your brethren encroaching into "SeaBee" territory during that time.....Lot's of great ass kicking during those days :-) PI. was the best duty station I ever had in my 20-some years of service.
I was station dito from March 1987- April 1989; oh so much fun there as a young sailor and seen so many Amerasian kids there and some of the kids I can tell who the fathers are. I seen some of them working in the bars and resturants there. I left there as a single guy and made sure i didn't leave any souvenoir babies there. I know of other shipboard sailors that left alot of Amerasian kids there from very young sailors/marines there.
Thanks, home port 69 to 72, the people were great. Admiralty Restaurant, Western Skies and all the club's. Then back to the bird farm and 30 days on the line.
Was stationed at the NAS Cubi Clinic Dec. 75- mid 77. Took my car with me a 73 blue VW Karman Ghia that cost me $6,000 brand new. Just before I transferred in 77 sold it to a sailor that said he worked for NIS for what I bought it for. Just before it was finalized the radio died so gave him a $200 discount.
i was there in 1972 it was good fun with bars and the mama sons kept things in line. the kids in the river would go down and come up with the coins you threw in it.
Interesting to see the past. I'm an American living in Subic freeport zone/Olongapo area now. This explains why the police and firemen all know my name and ask me questions. It's a family friendly vacation zone now. Times have changed for the better IMHO.
talk about a flash back! I ate monkey BBQ on that bridge, or at least I think it was. I was on the USS Duncan DDR 874. Caught a case of nsu there and I was Quarantined when I got back to the sates for a week, try telling your Mum and Dad that. Of course I didnt tell them anything. 1967. 68, 69. I was on west pac later in the year. The Carl Vinson battle group was out then. I think we pulled into Subic in October. Fun times, wish I had a chance to go again.

Was there in 1988 USS Nimitz there first time there. After my tour on the Nimitz l got orders to Cubi Pt. Subic. 89-92. The last 3 years it was open. I got married to one of them but my marriage lasted about 7 years. I never married again. Mt Pinatubo blew up it was scary completely dark in the middle of the day. Ground shaking. What a mess it left.

The bar with crocodile was Pauline's. The nastiest bar was the East End. Other bars I remember Oceans 11 & Cherry Club. The famous line from the Honkers was "I love you no shit buy me drink"
The sailors would hit Olongapo with a pocket full of money and return to the ship broke. Why the PI government chose to kill the golden goose and put an end to Subic Bay Navy Yard I will always wonder about. It shows governments work in strange ways. I just don’t believe the people who made their living off the sailors liked the idea of the cash flow ending.
There are a few things from history you may not know, or just don't remember. The Filipino people thought they were getting help for their independence from spain from the US. little did they know that the US took the Philippines from Spain, then had to go to war against them to take control of the country. That was in the first turn of the century. Then they didn't get independence from the US until after WW2 after being pretty much destroyed by the war and the US keeping all the bases as US territories. Then in the early 70's when Marcos took over under Marshall law, the US backed him and then when it was obvious he would not keep control, they swooped in with their 747's and escorted him to Hawaii in exile. They also reneged on a lot of promises made to Filipinos who fought in or with the US servicemen in the Military, including US citizenship. So yes, a lot of Filipinos who made their living from the bases, there were also a lot of Filipinos who did not like the bases being there anymore. And, actually they made the best decision in the long run as the old Clark ab, now the Clark freeport zone, and the Old Subic Bay base is also a freeport zone, have probably 10 times the number of employees working for companies located on the old bases. I miss the bases as much as anyone. I did 3 shoreduty tours in the Navy between '65 and '75. Also came back as a civilian on a gov't contract and worked at the CrowValley bombing range in Tarlac and lived there from '87 t0 '93. Job ended in '91 when Mt. Pinatubo blew it's top. I am now retired here in the PI.
It was Cory Aquino and her olgarch communist friends who ordered the closure of US bases. The communists wrote our constitution that's why we're still poor. It was also the communists who initiated the EDSA coup of 1986 overthfowing Marcos
The situation is much better now. The former naval base has been converted to a flourishing economic zone which makes the lives of the people better than rely on sex trade.
@@butchbaliao9085 as I remember it there was a lot more going on in Olongapo (sp) than sex trade, you just had to look around. A lot of young military didn’t want to look any farther than the bars.

hello all olongapo sailors-i was there from 1966-1969. do any of you remember the tender trap bar-it was about one third way down on the right-a small bar--or how about the mexico bar-it was first bar on right after crossing shit river. let me know if any of you remember these bars and also the zanzibaron left side going down magsaysay drive-a large bar-was fun to get layed there in olongapo-about 5 dollars for girl-bar fine and hotel-was great
Charles Lytle, you mean the New Mexico bar, I remember that location, Magsaysay & Gordon Avenue, I also remember the Zanzibar which was a hangout for most USS Blue Ridge LCC-19 sailors, D'Cave was another hangout for USS Blue Ridge sailors. My very first Liberty there was on 11/26/1974, it was my very first Westpac Cruise, I was stationed aboard the USS Blue Ridge LCC-19 a few of my biddies & I we went out to Subic City, we went out there a few more times. My second time there, I met one of my uncles former girl friends who was a mamasan at the Cherry bar, she told me many thing about my uncle. My uncle he was Navy, USS Southerland DD-743, he was a plank owner on that ship. It was on 1/16/1975 that I met my late wife of 31 years in Olongapo City, we didn't get married till after I got stationed at SRF Subic Bay on 11/20/1978. That was the very best tour of duty I ever had in the Navy. The Navy should have just left me there for good. My late wife & I had three children during our marriage. She passed away on 3/6/2010 at 2:20 AM Mountain Time in Loser City Tucson, Mexizona. The critics that said my marriage would only last up to 5 years of course we're NO WHERE TO BE FOUND AT ALL. I plan to live out my life in the Philippines and I'm in the long drawn out slow tedious process of selling everything I own in the damned Loser City Tucson area, once that's done, GOOD RIDDANCE TO LOSER CITY TUCSON Metro area and home to the Philippines for good.
Remember all of those clubs from '71 - '78. Mexico Club became New Mexico Club. Tender Trap was briefly Tobynoy's (a jazz club run by the brother, Toby. Toby had the sandal & leather goods store on Magsaysay).
I was there on the USS Parsons and USS Midway both home ported in japan. Love visiting the philippines will go back as soon as I can.

I was there on the USS Enterprise 82 and 83 loved it best liberty ever.
I was on the USS MARS AFS-1 as part of the Enterprise battle group in 82-83. Great times in the P.I.
I was there same time on Big E - 3 weeks in Feb 83. I fell in love but didn't get married. Now I think I made a big life mistake.....

I love this. I was there several times during the Vietnam War. You could smell that river 12 mi out to sea.

Old Jolo Club. I was stationed on shore duty at Cubi Point, 1969 to 1971. Lived off-base in Olongopo City. Yes, I remember it all. And miss all of it.
I do I was in the same time 1971 to 1974 aboard the USS Oriskany. Do you remember Mombasa Kenya? Couldn't get backboard Oriskany so we left on the USS Oklahoma City the morning after. Once we got out to see they heloed us over to the Oriskany. Had breakfast on the Oklahoma City you guys had some Great Chow

2 WestPac cruises, '71 & '72, USS Enterprise CVAN65. Great times in the PI! There will never be anything like Olongapo City was back in the day! As I have always said, no matter who tells you about liberty in the PI, and regardless of how great he says it was, take it from me..... it was MUCH better than that!

Thanks for the memories. I first got to Olongapo Subic Bay in the fall of 1965 my first WESPAC deployment. I was 18 and didn't have a clue of what was in Olongapo. Boy did I learn fast. Too bad we lost the. Base. Yeah I remembered going on Liberty in my Tropical White Long uniform. I was naive but made a lot of friends. Those were my teen years as a young sailor. I was on the USS FORT MARION (LSD-22). Gator navy. I still have dreams to go and see the place again. Maybe bring back a lot of memories. Fair winds and following seas.....

I was on the Niagara Falls AFS3 in 1971, Det 3, CH46 Helos. Then assigned to VRC-50 at Cubi Point shore duty. Jolos was where I met my favorite hook, we lived just south of Whites Beach. Sin city at its best!! Man do I miss those days!

where I want to live out my life in the Philippines is because I lived there before, more familiar with Olongapo City despite the changes
it went through. Then again, I too have also changed as well and went through changes myself. I hope we'll be neighbors in the future.

I was stationed at Cubi Pt late 67 toApr 68 & then back Oct 68 to Sept 69. I used to cross bridge & frist club on right upstairs was Oceans 11. Great band there did Cream, Beatles, Doors and a lot of Motown.Was in HC-7 which was a helo squadron, so we wore civilian clothes & learned some of the language.Great times & old friends.

Thank you. I enjoyed digitizing and putting together my 8mm movies from my Navy days. I still have several reels from Hong Kong to do. I tried to splice the scenes into a story of sorts. I'm still amazed the Olongapo River looks like it's okay to swim in. The smell was like a cattle feedlot, made my eyes water. I saw a dead pig floating by when I was on shore patrol.

I sure do miss Subic Bay and the fun-filled town of Olongapo City. The first time I was there was 1973 when I was on the USS America CVA-66, and didn't go back until I sailed on the USS Coral Sea CV-43 from 1980-1983. Looking at videos of the town now, made me very sad. Too much of the old town is gone now. All the "fun" spots on Magsaysay and Gordon Ave. Sigh!!!

I was fortunate that I was able to visit olongapo when I deployed on a WestPac in 1986 and again in 1990! Thanks for posting this here, I've lost all of my pictures and videos from my visits there, it's good to watch it because it really brought back a flood of memories! Losing all of my pictures and videos wasn't good, there are a lot of people who don't or can't believe what it was like there and now I can show what it was like then using your video!

I was there in 88 with the USS New Orleans. So glad we didn't have to wear our uniforms off the ship then. Great footage, Olongapo has changed quite a bit since those days.
The most fun port in the Pacific. Hong Kong was great too but Subic was my favorite liberty spot. You could have
a great liberty just staying on base. My first trip was in 1966 on the USS Ticonderoga and then two more
trips in 69 and 70 on the USS Bon Homme Richard. Being young and in the Navy then......life was great.
James, Maybe you could tried to revisit Subic bay. Maybe you go there there during the Christmas holidays. Probably you could fly to Clark international airport and ride the bus that goes to Subic bay.
Enjoyed Olongapo in 68,69. Served aboard the U.S.S Everett F. Larson DD 830. This was my most favorite duty station overseas. This ship was in the South China Sea on June 4th. when the carrier from Australia, HMS Melbourne collided with the Frank E. Evans DD 754 cutting her completely in half between the stacks. 74 sailors I believe went down with her. The Everett F. Larson tied up to the stern to keep it floating until an ocean-going tug from Subic got to the scene to tow the remains back to the base. Later the stern was used for target practice and sinker out side of the channel on a barrier.
i liked the Genisis club,,and the Sierra club. they were my 2 faves in olongapo. but i mostly hung out in subic city. i had a steady girl there. she worked at High Times. which has since changed hands and names a few times.
I was TAD from FICPAC on Ford Island in 64. After going thru the gate then crossing over Shit river, there were kids in the water yelling "Quarter Mister" . the water was so dirty a quarter would disappear as soon as it hit the water! and the kids would keep the coins in there mouths! The only bars I can recall were the TNT and the EAST END CLUB. Having some San Miguel and watching the girls dance with two long poles. Went bowling, the balls were all beat up, after a few frames the pinsetter would wright on the ball TIP PLEASE and if you didn't put a peso or two in the ball's finger holes the kid setting the pins would set the pins all over the place or only put 3 or 4 pins up. Lota fun Bowling! Loved the Monkey Meat! After getting back and going thru ones pockets there would be bunch of washers, given as change from the Jeepney drivers. Olongapo I'll never forget you!!!
The East Inn put the New Jolo Club to shame! ! ! A unique brand of hospitality that the fleet needed!

Love the part about the off limits areas. That was where you started the night no matter what service you were in. It was also where you found the local cops partying too. Love the hypocrisy of it all.
The off limits down near the end of town got kind of scary in the 60s, didn't go there. I always abided by the POD (plan of the day)
Off Limits meant Go Here to me and my mates - LOL. We started our liberty at the EM club on base before heading into town.
Thanks for the video upload. Nice to see again the Old Olongapo circa1967. I was 14 years old and remember those sailors in their whites summer uniform on liberty and Shore Patrols will chase them when they go to out of bound areas.
Brings back many great memories. Just about every westpac port call was in Subic and Alongapo for the USS Constellation while I was aboard 1964-67. We were in Hong Kong when the Gulf of Tonkin incident occurred and instead of heading for Australia on our around the world tour we headed for the Gulf of Tonkin where we spent the rest of our flight operations time. I don't regret it though because being in Alongapo as a young man was like being a kid in a candy store with all the friendly girls and cheap San Miguel beer. Talk about happy endings! Shore patrol would usually make sure you made it back to the cattle trucks at closing time to take you back to the ship to recuperate for the next liberty day. Our stays were short, 5-6 days at the most but we made the most of it.
Was on the Constellation for 87 westpac. PI was definitely fun to say the least. Went up into Persian Gulf and the USS Stark got hit. Stayed on station 93 days. Then went to Perth and back to San Diego. 2 ports. That's it. Oh well had fun in PI and Australia.

I watched it and I was wondering if it was late 70s early 80s because, honestly, that place barely seemed to change. I was stationed in the PI 85-88 and the jeeps and cars all looked essentially the same ;)
So happy to get there then so happy to leave. After three days of hard steaming in Olongapo you'd come down with the "Philippine fall aparts" and were thankful to get back underway just to dry out and recover.

My old duty station Rota, Spain isn't the same anymore either. I browsed through on google earth and not even half the watering holes, G. I. bars and clubs are there anymore. My favorite restaurant "Shorty's" gone!

was on the USS Weiss APD-135...Subic,had a lot of fun there in 1963-1964-65 just the start of Vietnam..remember one bar and it was called the "Cave" and how unbelievably hot,felt like i was in the forward hole...but in the "Cave" the San Miguel had frost on the bottles...thanks for the memories....R.
+Richard Botos: I frequented the Cave quite a bit, it was a great bar, owned by an Aussie and he still kept the beer icy cold when I got there. he told me it cost him around $10k to build it and he made tons of money. I was there from 69-70, aboard the USS Belknap (DLG-26). I can still remember the bar kinda curved and the stools were stalagmites and it also had stalactites hanging from the ceiling with lights in them. also the little grotto for the band and dancers. lmao, I'm having a flashback as I type this.

In '71 D'Cave was one of the few bars that had a generator! I met a fancy woman named "Mila." She always wore her hair up. Not young, but SOOoo beautiful!

I was station dito from March 1987- April 1989; oh so much fun there as a young sailor and seen so many Amerasian kids there and some of the kids I can tell who the fathers are. I seen some of them working in the bars and resturants there. I left there as a single guy and made sure i didn't leave any souvenoir babies there. I know of other shipboard sailors that left alot of Amerasian kids there from very young sailors/marines there.
Thanks, home port 69 to 72, the people were great. Admiralty Restaurant, Western Skies and all the club's. Then back to the bird farm and 30 days on the line.

Was stationed at the NAS Cubi Clinic Dec. 75- mid 77. Took my car with me a 73 blue VW Karman Ghia that cost me $6,000 brand new. Just before I transferred in 77 sold it to a sailor that said he worked for NIS for what I bought it for. Just before it was finalized the radio died so gave him a $200 discount.

Interesting to see the past. I'm an American living in Subic freeport zone/Olongapo area now. This explains why the police and firemen all know my name and ask me questions. It's a family friendly vacation zone now. Times have changed for the better IMHO.

Caught a case of nsu there and I was Quarantined when I got back to the sates for a week, try telling your Mum and Dad that. Of course I didnt tell them anything. 1967. 68, 69. I was on west pac later in the year. The Carl Vinson battle group was out then. I think we pulled into Subic in October. Fun times, wish I had a chance to go again.

Was there in 1988 USS Nimitz there first time there. After my tour on the Nimitz l got orders to Cubi Pt. Subic. 89-92. The last 3 years it was open. I got married to one of them but my marriage lasted about 7 years. I never married again. Mt Pinatubo blew up it was scary completely dark in the middle of the day. Ground shaking. What a mess it left.

The sailors would hit Olongapo with a pocket full of money and return to the ship broke. Why the PI government chose to kill the golden goose and put an end to Subic Bay Navy Yard I will always wonder about. It shows governments work in strange ways. I just don’t believe the people who made their living off the sailors liked the idea of the cash flow ending.
Im Filipino. I love it very much for the Americans to return. Thankfully, Subic is doing great financially.
There are a few things from history you may not know, or just don't remember. The Filipino people thought they were getting help for their independence from spain from the US. little did they know that the US took the Philippines from Spain, then had to go to war against them to take control of the country. That was in the first turn of the century. Then they didn't get independence from the US until after WW2 after being pretty much destroyed by the war and the US keeping all the bases as US territories. Then in the early 70's when Marcos took over under Marshall law, the US backed him and then when it was obvious he would not keep control, they swooped in with their 747's and escorted him to Hawaii in exile. They also reneged on a lot of promises made to Filipinos who fought in or with the US servicemen in the Military, including US citizenship. So yes, a lot of Filipinos who made their living from the bases, there were also a lot of Filipinos who did not like the bases being there anymore. And, actually they made the best decision in the long run as the old Clark ab, now the Clark freeport zone, and the Old Subic Bay base is also a freeport zone, have probably 10 times the number of employees working for companies located on the old bases. I miss the bases as much as anyone. I did 3 shoreduty tours in the Navy between '65 and '75. Also came back as a civilian on a gov't contract and worked at the CrowValley bombing range in Tarlac and lived there from '87 t0 '93. Job ended in '91 when Mt. Pinatubo blew it's top. I am now retired here in the PI.
It was Cory Aquino and her olgarch communist friends who ordered the closure of US bases. The communists wrote our constitution that's why we're still poor.
It was also the communists who initiated the EDSA coup of 1986 overthfowing Marcos
The situation is much better now. The former naval base has been converted to a flourishing economic zone which makes the lives of the people better than rely on sex trade.
@@butchbaliao9085 as I remember it there was a lot more going on in Olongapo (sp) than sex trade, you just had to look around. A lot of young military didn’t want to look any farther than the bars.

hello all olongapo sailors-i was there from 1966-1969. do any of you remember the tender trap bar-it was about one third way down on the right-a small bar--or how about the mexico bar-it was first bar on right after crossing shit river. let me know if any of you remember these bars and also the zanzibaron left side going down magsaysay drive-a large bar-was fun to get layed there in olongapo-about 5 dollars for girl-bar fine and hotel-was great

Zanzibar which was a hangout for most USS Blue Ridge LCC-19 sailors, D'Cave was another hangout for USS Blue Ridge sailors.

my uncles former girl friends who was a mamasan at the Cherry bar, she told me many thing about my uncle. My uncle he
was Navy, USS Southerland DD-743, he was a plank owner on that ship. It was on 1/16/1975 that I met my late wife of 31 years
in Olongapo City, we didn't get married till after I got stationed at SRF Subic Bay on 11/20/1978. That was the very best tour
of duty I ever had in the Navy. The Navy should have just left me there for good. My late wife & I had three children during our
marriage. She passed away on 3/6/2010 at 2:20 AM Mountain Time in Loser City Tucson, Mexizona. The critics that said my
marriage would only last up to 5 years of course we're NO WHERE TO BE FOUND AT ALL. I plan to live out my life in the Philippines
and I'm in the long drawn out slow tedious process of selling everything I own in the damned Loser City Tucson area, once that's
done, GOOD RIDDANCE TO LOSER CITY TUCSON Metro area and home to the Philippines for good.

Remember all of those clubs from '71 - '78. Mexico Club became New Mexico Club. Tender Trap was briefly Tobynoy's (a jazz club run by the brother, Toby. Toby had the sandal & leather goods store on Magsaysay).
80-'84 the Brown Fox on the right after cyt river, then 125th st Jazz and Zig Zag. All going right side of Magsaysay Dr.
