I've totally been down a Sea Of Tranquility rabbit hole recently. Such a great channel with connections to a lot of other great channels. Pardo and Popoff together is the best.

I actually love Power Windows and most of those 80s albums (some more than others). I am a fan of all their phases because the musicianship, exciting song structure and lyrics are still there even if they are keyboard heavy. My one complaint about those albums (Power Windows thru Presto...maybe Roll the Bones too) is the same thing you guys mentioned as well - they are thinly produced with no bottom end, especially Presto. I would love to hear those albums remastered/remixed with a fatter bottom end (without distorting the mix though) because there are some solid songs on those albums (a few stinkers too). I always loved and appreciated their experimentation with different sounds.

We knew it was going to happen because you could hear them playing it during sound checks before every show.

I’ve made this statement on a previous Contrarians Rush video but I think it needs to be stated again, by the early/mid 80’s, Rush had a surprising amount of “artsy”, college radio/underground kids who thought Rush fit within their aesthetic viewpoint. These were the kids who would wear the New Order t shirts or were into bands like Simple Minds, Big Country, Echo and the Bunnyman, etc. Rush had respect then because they too were considered sort of artsy/lyrical and interested in electronics/computerized sounds. These underground music fans of the mid 80’s were outsiders and passionate about music. Many probably didn’t even know about Rush’s heavy rock and heavy prog history. All they knew was that Rush was interesting and not banal. These kids hated the misogynistic/party till you drop vibe of Heavy Metal and burgeoning hair metal and they especially hated the jock rock popular kid music of say Springsteen. Maybe some time, someone will delve into Rush’s forgotten mid 80’s fandom with artsy New Wave kids. This fandom had a brief flirtation with Rush...Signals to Power Windows (but it did not go much further).

As far as lyrics go Geddy has said in past interviews that here were occasions where he didn't feel comfortable with what Neil wrote. He said Neil was always flexible and never had a problem re-writing a specific lyric or coming up with something different. The guy's like a walking encyclopedia.

Alex is unique in his utilizing a guitar as a reflection of lyrics: The Spirit of Radio riff that sounds like a permanent radio wave; the wah-wah's solo that reflects "the sound of salesmen"; the eclipse sound in Entre Nous (although that may be predominantly synth) "drifting in our orbits to a brief eclipse"

Interesting show... I first fell in love with Rush after watching them on Din Kirshner’s Rock Concert back in late 1974 when I was 12....
Back then, I had to save in order to buy any albums, so by the time I was able to buy any albums, Rush had quickly released 2 albums in 1975 - Fly By Night and my favorite Caress of Steel - which of course I was able to buy and get my parents to buy the second one as a birthday gift.
After having moved to live in Argentina the following year in 1976 for a few years with my parents, Rush was a pretty obscure band in the USA, let alone completely obscure everywhere else. As I got more and more into music and made friends at record stores down there, a radio DJ just happened to hear about my Rush records and asked if he could play them on the radio.....
The positive response in Argentina was overwhelming, the radio station had the biggest flood of inquiry calls they’ve ever had... soon, Rush received regular radio play with cassette recordings of my records as they were UNreleased in Latin America at this point in time.... soon, the radio stations in southern Brazil and Uruguay picked up on Rush.... and in 1978 I was consulted by the record company (via the DJ) in Buenos Aires as to which Rush record to release in the local market - Farewell to Kings was the debut there and was a major smash!!
    The rest is history....True story...
PS. I’ve since moved back to the USA in 1982.
Pete, I too always considered Rush and Kansas to have the most interesting lyrics in rock.

      Thanks! Great hosting!
I was able to meet Geddy and Alex at a hotel where they were staying in Las Vegas during the Power Windows tour in February of 1986, with Steve Morse Band opening.... I had a difficult time telling them the complete story cuz other fans were interrupting me, but I don’t think they believed me as they both had a look of incredulity.... but it’s true!😂
When I told them that I took cassette recordings of my records (which were super hard to get overseas) to the radio station, they asked if I was a bootlegger! 😡

I'm in the UK and my first encounter with Rush was sometime in 1976/77 with Bastille Day being played on the radio and reading about them in Sounds magazine. First album was All the World's a Stage, first saw them at Southampton Gaumont in 78, having had tickets to see them the year before but got snowed in so couldnt go. Became less interested after Signals but still bought all the albums videos and DVDs and had a near to the front seat at Manchester MEN on 12th Sept 2004 - fantastic. If I had to choose a favourite album it would be A Farewell to Kings with CVaress of Steel, 2112, Hemispheres and Permanent waves all a very close second. In my Top 5 all time favourite bands

I too lost it with Power Windows , tried again with it recently and still don’t like it . After that the next album I bought was Vapor Trails before going back and purchasing the ones I’d missed. Of course none of them are bad just unremarkable for me personally. If you want to pin me down I’d say the last truely great Rush album is Signals. They were always amazing live and I was honoured to have seen them in the UK towards the end of their remarkable career . Of course I hope Geddy and Alex do something together in the near future under a different name .

A couple of comments on some of the subjects brought up in this video.
The most underrated song from the 70's and 80's to me is Something For Nothing. After 1990, I think that We Hold On from Snakes and Arrows. The best song after 1990 that a lot of the fans of the old stuff ignore is Dreamline. I think it should have been a bigger hit on more than just Rock radio.
The R40 Tour has mixed feelings for me. They too many of their Radio Hits and too many long songs and instrumentals due to Geddy having to save his voice. I wanted to hear more of the short songs from 2112 and A Farewell to Kings like Something For Nothing and Cinderella Man. Songs that never had been documented on video before. I like a lot of their 80's albums that the three commentators don't seem to like. But, I also like a lot of their old songs except for Cygnus X-1, Part 1. I am a heretic to the old fans for really disliking that song. To me it is the example of them not having enough good ideas for a full album. The only part I like is section/part 2 of it with the regular song with lyrics part of the song. The part they never played live after 1980 ironically. They could have taken that section and expanded into a full 3 to 4 minute song that might have been far superior to the plodding, noodling nonsense that makes up most of the song.

I cashed out after Power Windows. After that I still bought each new album and listened to it all but often found it a chore of obligation.
They were always great live though there were time when their setlist was too full of newer stuff to warrant sitting through a whole show just to hear maybe 3 songs I liked.
I think the first 8 albums are all that great and essential but don't think they did anything essential after Moving Pictures. Just way too bland.
I really really hard to like Signals, Grace Under Pressure, and Power Windows and listened to them many times trying to like them but it never really clicked. I eventually liked about half of Signals it was such a huge disappoinment compared to the 8 albums that preceded it.
I think they finished with a comparitively strong album with Clockwork Angels but still don't it was a great album.
The R40 tour was great though.

I just was never a fan of Power Windows (1985), Hold Your Fire (1987), Presto (1989), and Roll The Bones (1991). That being said, I do like a couple of songs off of each of those albums, but as a whole, the sound of those albums was too thin, cold, and diluted.
