Mike I got to meet Terry Brown at Metalworks in 1995 for a production seminar and he had just recently reorded Fates Warning Parallels there and it was a dream come true. Bob Ezrin and Paul Northfield were ther as speakers as well. Very cool.

Hold Your Fire is excellent with only one bad track ( and we all know which one!). Turn the Page is one of the best tracks they ever wrote imo. HYF was a return to form after the disappointing Power Windows! My top 10: (Counterparts could be higher, because it really is phenomenal.)

Im an older guy (47) but got into rush early... 2019... yes, been into hc punk and extreme music for decades. So it took some time, but now i love rush. And having the advantage of beeing late keeps me from prefering a special phase because getting into them to that time.
I love every rush album... just as pete always says some just a bit more, same with death or Testament...
    I give it a try:
    01. Hemispheres
    02. Permanent waves
    03. Farewell to kings
    04. Clockwork Angels
    05. Grace under pressure
    06. Moving pictures
    07. Counterparts
    08. Fly by night
    09. Test for echo
    10. Caress of steel
And this may vary.... love vapor trails or 2112 snakes and Arrows... its nearly unrankable.
Favorite rush? Always the one i listen to
    Great Show... very entertaining 👍

Paul and Gene got some things and discovered a lot of good bands but they did not get prog at all and still don't until this day. From what I know, Paul and Gene only liked the first straight ahead rock self titled album, "Rush"...Geddy and Alex were always thankful that Kiss had them open for them in the early days but the Rush guys were not too impressed with Kiss as musicians and were more appreciative of them as business men.

Great lists. As a longtime Rush fan and cover band going back to the 1970s and with them being in my top 10 bands of all time, here's my list:
    1) 2112 (written on acoustic guitar for emphasis on vocal melody, this is an all time classic)
    2) Caress of Steel (maybe the first prog metal album of all time but with a lot of vocal and guitar melody)
    3) Farewell to Kings (great all the way through with all excellent songs)
    4) Hemispheres (probably their most proggy album)
    5) Fly By Night (the first album of theirs combining strong vocal melody, with elements of prog metal)
    6) Permanent Waves (first album that combined prog with more commercial radio friendly radio appeal)
    7) Rush (raw rock power that showed signs of the progressive metal that was to come)
    8) Moving Pictures (a little too commercial for me but I still like the longer non-radio played songs)
    9) Power Windows (a return to more guitar based songs)
    10) Grace Under Pressure

Have you guys listened to YYNOT? I have mentioned it on Pete's channel before, but this is a new band with mostly older players that started doing Rush covers, but now have 2 great (IMHO) albums of original material out now. Heart and Soul off their second album, Resonance, is a great song that any Rush fan should listen to.

To Mike's final point, I think the last rock "movement" after grunge was the "new metal" movement, which I'd rather forget about! ;-) I do think in the last 10-15 years there's a been a "classic rock" resurgence with bands like Rivals Sons, Wolfmother, Airbourne, Greta Van Fleet, Dirty Honey, Monster Truck, Scorpion Child, Kyng, and several others.

Great topic, great video. Came here from Pete's channel. I'm a Rush fan (KISS fan, too.)
Difficult catalogue to rank. This will be the very first time I've attempted to rank Rush's albums, and I love them all.
For now, my Top 10 goes something like this:
    01. A Farewell to Kings (The third Rush album I bought. Pete's description was spot-on, here. Xanadu is spellbinding. Cygnus X-1 is solely responsible for destroying and rebuilding my brain with the dizzying changes in time, tempo, along with the weird, swirling chord progressions. I hated it so much when I first heard it. Came close to smashing my copy of the CD against the wall after the song ended. A few listens later, I loved it. This album turned me into a prog-nut, amongst other things. I haven't been the same since.)
    02. Permanent Waves (The first Rush album I bought.)
    03. Moving Pictures
    04. Hemispheres
    05. Caress of Steel (I've always loved this one.)
    06. Grace Under Pressure
    07. 2112
    08. Hold Your Fire (The second Rush album I bought. Still holds a special place.)
    09. Signals (Seems many Rush fans will rank this much higher. I just like everything ranked above this a tad more.)
    10. Fly By Night
Mike is hilarious. I thought my list would be controversial, but I feel a bit safer after seeing his ;-)

Your list is very respectable. Although your order is different from mine, you chose my ten favorite Rush albums which is surprising. Nobody who picks Hold Your Fire ever leaves out some of the other keyboard laden abominations of Rush's 1980's catalog. I'm glad you did or I would not have been able to classify your list as respectable. :-)
My top six are always solid, play straight through albums, whereas I often skip tracks on my final four depending on my mood.
      Fly By Night
      2112
      Caress of Steel
      Permanent Waves
      A Farewell to Kings

      @@dawnthechaldean5377 Hey you :-)
Cool to hear we have the same 10, though in different order. Part of that may have to do with the order in which I bought the albums, which seemed so strange and haphazard, now that I think about it. I got Permanent Waves first, then Hold Your Fire. Then, I got AFTK, then Hemispheres ('cause of the Cygnus X-1 connection.) Got Caress of Steel, 2112, then Moving Pictures, Signals and Grace, couple of 90's albums, then back to the debut...something like that.
I'm guessing the 80's abominations you're referring to are Power Windows and Presto. I still love those, but, up until recently, those two were the very last ones I bought. I became acquainted with Rush's final three albums earlier this year.
Some of your rankings look much like my past rankings: Caress ranked 2nd or 3rd at one point. Loved it immediately. Hemispheres used to rank even lower, as I wasn't the most enamored with the title suite. I recognized the brilliance in the writing, but overall, I thought it was a let down coming after the ravenous, hair-raising intensity of the 1st part/Book 1. With time, it grew on me, and now I love it. Oh, and Fly By Night is awesome.
Yes, these live chats are great!

@@knightvisioniixv I also purchased the Rush catalog out of sequence and think that may have influenced my ranking. The first Rush songs I ever heard were from Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, and 2112. The first albums I bought were Fly By Night, 2112, and Caress of Steel. I was 15 when Hold Your Fire was released and bought that one next.
Anyway, I know all of the other albums on my list are superior to my top choice of Fly By Night in a technical sense. I understand the complexity of music and arrangements. I also understand how the lyrics matured in some ways over the subsequent years. That is not to say that the music wasn't exceptional on Fly By Night or that there weren't some insightful lyrics on certain songs. There is something about that album that is different from all of the others. It is as though they were unsure of themselves as young men, yet they were willing to lay themselves bare knowing it would place them in a precarious position musically, intellectually, and emotionally. The songs range from bold to meek with the common thread being vulnerability. Will they be damned for being too assertive and cocky on some songs? Will they be ridiculed for being too honest about their longings and insecurities on other songs? In the end, no pun intended there though that song would fit into the latter category I just mentioned, they made the album and it remains their most charming to me in a way I will never outgrow.
It is odd I love Rush so much and can talk about them ad nauseam. I am not a real prog fan. If I were in a sinking boat with albums by Rush, Yes, DIO, CSN, Free, Megadeth, and Whitesnake...well, I would definitely throw the Yes albums overboard first to save my life. Maybe Rush isn't a real prog band even though everyone calls them one.

@@dawnthechaldean5377 It's very interesting how the very first albums one purchases from an artist quite often end up as top faves. Hack said this in the stream, and Pete has mentioned this many times as well.
I'm a little younger than you :-) I was born in the early-80's, so the first songs I heard from Rush spanned from Permanent Waves to Counterparts as a teenager in the 90's. Recorded various songs heard on the radio and created mixtapes (remember those?) Excepting some shorter songs, the epic-length tracks from the 70's came a bit later, and I didn't start buying Rush albums until 2000. At the time, I had no idea that Hold Your Fire had such mixed opinions; I pride myself on listening to music as intimately as possible; I want it to be mine, so I pay little to no attention to critics, popular opinion...none of that. I go with my own ears. Always have. If I pay too much attention to that stuff, it's no longer mine. Does that make sense?
You do have a point about Fly By Night being unique. In one sense, this is where Rush was born (or reborn, if you like); it was the first album to feature Neil Peart, and while it was as hard-driving as the debut, there were notable differences: the lyrics became far more cerebral, arrangements became a bit more ornate, especially the time signatures-- lots of 7's in Anthem and By-Tor--all trademarks that would permeate the rest of their career (And yeah Rush loved 7... want a fun exercise? Listen and count the crazy amount of Rush songs to feature 7. It's wild.) Yet, none of it was quite as developed as it would be on future albums. Had a friend describe the lyrics on FBN as intelligent, but callow, and lacking refinement (basically the same thing you said), but how this was also the most endearing thing about it.
It's not nearly as strange as you might think for you to love Rush: they were proggy enough for the prog audience, hard-edged enough for the rockers. Many metalheads, classic rock fans, proggers, punk rock lovers, alternative rock/grunge fans... they all loved Rush. Hack said he wasn't big into prog-rock, either. But he loves Rush.
What you said about Yes and the boat thing really cracked me up (you are something else, lol.)

Glad to see Pete likes T4E. It usually comes in last in fan polls but I like it. I rank it way ahead of Counterparts, Roll the Bones, Presto and S&A, those 4 albums are mostly unlistenable to me.

I guess I can relate to Matt's perspective as I also started to listen to Rush around the same time although I already knew some older tracks - the first album I bought was Grace Under Pressure on cassette so that whole period is special for me up to Hold Your Fire. They started to lose me with Presto and at the time Roll the Bones was a disappointment although I like it much more now. After that I lost my way with them for a while and the next three albums I didn't pick up until years after they came out. Snakes and Arrows is for me the best of the modern day output so nice to see it get some love here too.

Just because you don't like the direction of rock certainly doesn't mean there isn't some killer stuff out there selling in a big way. For example Babymetal, 5FDP, A7X, Volbeat, Godsmack, not to mention some new stuff from Angel Dust and Onslaught.

Great show - nice to see such a variety in the choices - especially Mike's which reaffirms that its got more to do with your circumstances and how something speaks to you that creates your personal choices, and that those may alter a little bit over the years they won't by very much - as Neil added to Martin Popoff's favourite Rush song - 'plus ca change plus c'est la meme chose'.
My introduction to Rush was Bastille Day on the radio quickly followed by All the World's a Stage. My first studio album experience was on my 15th Birthday back in September 1977 with A Farewell to Kings (thanks Mum) - that has remained my favourite. I'm not such a great fan of Moving Pictures as while side 1 is phenomenal I'm not a great lover of side 2 - Camera Eye is great but didnt grab me as much as Natural Science and Jacobs Ladder, and the rest is ok but I never really liked Witch Hunt. And I'm throwing a Mulligan with my no 10 - those last two were a really great return to form probably thanks to produce Nick Raskulinecz's production and getting Alex to rediscover his 'Hemispheres chord'. Grace Under pressure just misses out as while half the album is great the rest didnt grab me. The 80's keyboard era - npthing particualrly bad about these and still listen to them as I do to Presto through to Vapor Trails (least favourite), in fact of my favourite groups I probably listen to Rush and every era the most
My top ten list though -
    1. A Farewell to Kings (My first studio album and still my favourite)
    2. Hemispheres (First saw them on tour in the UK in 1978 for this record and like Hack its my favourite Rush era)
    3. Caress of Steel ( my second studio album due to Bastille Day and like Pete I tend to go back to this more than I go back to 2112)
    4. 2112
    5. Permanent Waves
    6. Moving Pictures
    7. Fly by Night
    8. Rush
    9. Signals
    10. Snakes and Arrows & Clockwork Angels

I'm always surprised to see Presto so low in the lists...I mean it was Rush's return to the guitar sound and there are some awesome tracks: Show don't tell, The Pass, Available light, Superconductor, Chain Lightning, Presto, Red Tide...I dig the entire album and it's probably my fav with Hemispheres. Maybe the production was a bit weaker, I don't know, but I've always loved that album, I find it way superior than its (almost) twin-brother "Roll the Bones".

Counterparts was Rush's TRUE return to the guitar sound. Presto didn't have any hard hitting songs other than Show Don't Tell and even that lacked real power. The songs on Counterparts were HEAVY and ROCKED HARD, with a lot of bottom end and crunch. Very metallic and riff oriented. Every instrument was just louder and not thin and hate to say it, wimpy sounding, as was the case with Presto and Roll The Bones.

When you talk about the lack of modern guitar heroes, I'd have to say the only one coming to immediate mind is Joe Bonamassa... more blues oriented and probably not popular with the younger (under 40) crowd, but he draws a good audience and he tirelessly tours and records. He's well worth a listen.

Sad talk at the end about the loss of all the great musicians but what is just plain bad is what Drummerboy talks about half through the stream. Some kids or whoever who trashed the old building Rush and others recorded in. To just trash any building like that is bad but even no respect for a historic building? For what? A few hours of "fun"? People just stop thinking sometimes.
