Thank you so much for making this video, just got my sb22 running after misplacing the battery chamber lid and it works on my f301, but I didn't realise it would be perfectly fine to use on my d750 until you mentioned it working on the d series cameras!
Dang man, I love you (in a manly kind of way)! I just snagged an SB-22 and an SC-29 for a total of about $42 on eBay. Add to that the 6 lenses (2 Asahi Super Taks, 3 Asahi SMC Taks and 1 Nikon Nikkor 200mm f4 AI) I've picked up on your recommendations. I adapt all these lenses to my tricked out Fujifilm X-E2 and they work like magic! I've spent a lot less than I would have on gear before I suscribed to your channel so even though I'm broke as hell I'm going to send you some denaro via PayPal because talk is cheap. Keep up the good work and stay crazy!
I use the Cactus V6, and I love that I have remote power control with many analogue TTL flashes such as the Canon 540EZ. I can pick up a 540EZ for $20 on ebay all day long!
I almost bought a 3rd party TTL flash which had good reviews, but decided otherwise , thanks to you..I got my sb22 today, looks new, built so solid and paid $35...yesterday I received my sb26 from Used Photo Pro ( of course) and it also looks brand new for $80...they pair up great with my grey market D7100 ! You are the best buddy
Love the videos, keep them coming. Picked up the SB20 flash, superb bit of kit, even has flash power adjuster and cheaper than the sb22 also has this really quirky but cool rotating flash head with built in diffusers 👍👍👍
I got this with a N90s and 35mm manual lens for $50 from a kid on Craigslist who just wanted to get rid of it for anything. I love the SB-22 and all the other old auto flashes from Nikon. Make sure you don't fat finger over the small round hole in the front or it will pop off at full blast and not quench the flash based on return light to the sensor. Use a simple wireless trigger and then you are not fighting the cable when shooting.
Hi ken I know this is an old video but I am a bit lost, you speak of “setting your flash speed to 1/125 to 1/250”. I assume you’re talking about flash sync speed setting in camera? If yes, could you please explain what changing this setting does (why you would lower it from the cameras max) If not, and I’ve assumed incorrectly, could you please set me straight. Thanks for you time both now and over the years
I've been using these old things for years, and they work great! Excellent advice as usual, Ken. BTW I've got the SB-600, 700 - prefer these older ones - simpler!!
I just picked this SB-22 flash up on LetGo for $25 today. Unfortunately I was trying to test it out on my Nikon D5300 and it would fire off way after I full press the shutter button.
Many thanks for this, I’ve just put a SB-20 on the Yongnuo YN-622N trigger with the YN-622N-TX on the D300 and it works just brilliant, I only payed £10.50 (including delivery) on eBay for the SB-20. Just purchase the SB-22 on eBay for £20 so both will be used as slaves. Thanks again, well chuffed with all the advice you're sharing.
hey!nice video. I like equipments but recently I feel like my photography skills is stuck. I just want to ask if you would suggest some books/ online resources for me to improve my composition and visual languages.
ioklmj11 look for any photojounalistic university text book...there you will learn a solid foundation and the basic "rules" (guidelines) of creativity. For each category, give yourself an assignment..eg. go shoot 5 pictures using shadow (use of light), 5 pictures using rule of thirds, 5 pictures using reflection, 5 pictures using emotional content, etc etc. Once you do that enough (shoot) you will start to see these things without even thinking about it. Always look what the light is doing, when you are walking around. Have fun!
Nice video. I will look for an SB-22. In the meantime, I just got an SB-600 Speedlight a week ago but I need the Wide Flash Adapter that's supposed to be built in. So as of right now I can't zoom with it. I also need the AS-19 Speedlight Stand (I got my SB-600 from Craigslist). If you can point me in the direction of the Wide Flash Adapter, it would be greatly appreciated.
Ken, sorry if the question might seem silly. But does the cable you have mentioned above do more (in this specific case) than a wireless cheap'o trigger? As long as the TTL doesn't work on the SB-22 all it needs is just a trigger signal to fire, I reckon. I'm asking this because I'm not a great fan of cables...
So I got one of these and it has been perfect.. until today. I pull it out every now and again to do flash stuff and it has been pretty reliable and recycles fast, but I can't even get it to fire now. you hit the test button and the ready light starts flashing as if it fired but nothing happens. I thought I had a bad batch of batteries so I replaced them with new duracells. it seemed to be great for about 5 minutes and now it's toast again. no flash at all. I've ordered eneloops, do you think that will sort it out or does it sound faulty? disappointing if that's the case. hasn't been dropped or anything
Are all flashes notoriously fragile? I also have an SB600 which was DOA. I pulled it apart and one of the components has been knocked off the motherboard from a drop.. so that's 2 for 2 which aren't working
22s doesnt have a power power for external power, i have both. Sure it works with the SC28 !!! 22 and 22s are essentially the same flash. I got both ;)
you must have the ability to read my mind !!! I have said exactly the same thing to young kids, (Who say they are photographers because they got a digital rebel) but just the crazy old dude who's been shooting for over forty years!!!! 20 years longer than most of the people I see shooting have even been alive!!! and these people are getting paid????? Damn it drives me crazy......
Hey here's a secret I've been keeping to myself, until now. We all know that if Ken recommends something, the prices jump! (On the secondary markets) (If he's right - which he usually is!!) so, in homage to Ken, I'll share this here. (Although he may well have made a video about it...lol). Secret cheap Nikon flash: the SB-50. They're always priced lower than the others...I've got them for $25.00 - because they don't use AA batteries. But the DL 123's are cheap as rechargables!!
As I always ask Mr Angry Photographer, will this work with the Panasonic GH4? I'm just looking for a great flash for the GH4 and I see all these great devices you show but don't know if they work for the GH4. GH4 DOES in fact have TTL. But I no NOTHING about flashes lol hence my asking
What kind of flash set up would you recommend for the Nikon F3. The flash connection design on it was at best flawed. And the huge handle style flash is way to big. (I think this was the flash that inspired George Lucas to design the hilt to the light saber...joke) I saw the Nikon sb-1. Any suggestions? It would be nice to have the option of a flash on an old Nikon film camera. Thanks.
I don't have a flash right now , but want to get this sb 22 or Maybè the sb 26. If I bought the sb 26 , I have no commander mode on my d5200. Would I just turn my pop up flash way down ? Please forgive my ignorance on using a flash...
you can use a slave module for $20 to have your flash fire the remote, youd just turn your flash exposure down as far as you can just to trigger the remote flash.
Any chance you could explain Edward Leedskalnin pmh. I've built one and am curious if its some form of dielectric inertia. Its a suppring device and since it naturally produces AC current its even more confusing to me. I thought I might use it to harness lightning for power. But I suspect you might be more able than I. Any thoughts on the pmh would be welcome. If nothing else perhaps it'll be a good brain teaser for you.lol
if it works, HELL NO its not rubbish!!! shes a dirty beast that works great!!! you SHOULD get that flash cable either SC-29 or SC-29, and GET THE FLASH OFF the camera but youll have to "train" with it for ONLY 30 mins, then youll be a PRO with it, and shell crank out awesome damn pictures!!!
ahhh , the SC29 allows for full TTL off camera with the much NEWER flashes........., but your SB22 only needs the SC-28 cable SC-29 is overkill and it cannot utilize all its functions with that older flash, so SC28 is all that is needed.
doug davies any of the cheapy wireless remotes will fire same on the SB22 :) the primary trigger has not changed, of course you have NO TTL control, as i said, regardless of what you use.
thanks thats nice to know having a big family that sb22 will come in very handy with the children its from japan in excellent condition £19 plus £9 post so its a great deal i think if they say its in great nick you know its true
they last forever man, its the best 30+$$ anyone can spend. i did say over and over however you cannot TTL with it with any modern DSLR, however its the best teaching tool for anyone to spend a little $$$ and get great results. youll need a SC-17 or SC-29 cable to get it OFF the camera (of course) OR a wireless slave kit.
Toccata! I loved Sky’s arrangement, though JS Bach “is the tits!” 😜 Jerry Ghionis was selling the D850 in a Nikon ad prior to your clip. Google facilitates your content and profits from the sponsors. I suspect the content creators don’t share in this profit in any meaningful way.
Ahhhh well ive got a sb700 and the next step is to start looking at more lights. Got my sc-28 today, pretty stoked bout that. Either way i got my ttl speedlight so i just need an army of slaves now!
SB 28 you mean, or the SC28 cable!!!! hahahahahahha yes, an army of slaves, at least 3 of em' your shooting game will excell when you learn (shit, it will take you less than an hour to learn!!!!) to plant slave flashes ohhhh the pictures, people will wet themselves, theyre so neat, and nobody is smart enough to think to do it often!!!! produces amazing shots!!
Yes the cable! And yeah, i see a lot of potential in learning to use light to create better photos. When i first started shooting i had planned to rely on natural/ambient light and build my comp around that. Then i had the epiphany, "why is there such a push to get away from automatic exposures and all that but not one to get away from automatic light". Its called Photo-graphy, Light-writing/drawing... FFS its in the name lol!
ONE OF biggest mistakes people make is never getting the damn flash off the damn cammy Ahhh the EPIPHANY!!!! thence begins a new chapter on being a Light Master!!! seriously though
grrrrrrr does anyone know where you can buy the G E N U I N E off camera sc 29 flash sync cord and not get B U R N T for shipping seems to be the newest form of thievery CHARGE FOR THE CORD THEN DOUBLE UP ON SHIPPING GEEZ
yeah i see them in ebay then i look at shipping cost for two sensors and a coil cord a small bit of bubble wrap then you see a 30 usd shipping cost someone is getting rich and it aint me....
Yeah interesting Guy. Ive read more than I care to lmao. Some of his work seemed to be more political. Not sure what he intended with it but I may look it all over again. If I can bear it I may even search out more info for my file on his work, just not many photos out there.;-/
you sure the flash works? you have to use the camera in M (manual mode) i recommended that VERY cheap flash (in tha t video and another) as a teaching tool for strobe work

every time I watch one of your damn videos I end up buying something... thanks for the tip!!
had the sb22 back and was surprised by the actual size great little flash going to enjoy myself shooting with it thanks for the tip cheers ken
doug davies im glad i made U happy "on the cheap" :) :P

great advise, thanks got one for £24 UK.
cannot believe my luck just bought a brand new sb22 with the bag and instructions for $15.36 usd which is 20 bucks Australian ripper deal
I just got a SB-28DX today. $45 with shipping! Can't wait to try it out in the world tomorrow.
After watching for a third time I feel you may be talking about shutter speed when you say flash speed, as shutter isn’t that important with flash
I've been using these old things for years, and they work great! Excellent advice as usual, Ken. BTW I've got the SB-600, 700 - prefer these older ones - simpler!!
what about using 1/250 f 25....doing macro what would you set it to? been practing but looks like shit
I just picked this SB-22 flash up on LetGo for $25 today. Unfortunately I was trying to test it out on my Nikon D5300 and it would fire off way after I full press the shutter button.

I got a kick out of the unexpected Eluveitie ringtone!
What is your opinion about the sb 400.
It's tiny and TTL mode on Digital Camera.
Thank you, Ken.

As long as the TTL doesn't work on the SB-22 all it needs is just a trigger signal to fire, I reckon. I'm asking this because I'm not a great fan of cables...
true, it only fires on the old cheap flashes, no diff.
so I'm curious having the flash off the camera makes sense, but do I use the flash handheld and camera on a tripod or vis versa.
I got one in awesome condition for $30. Thanks for the recommendation :-)

wasnt it the SB-21 designed to best be used on the old F3 , god i havent handled that ancient beast in 15 years.

Bom video parabéns. Abraço de Portugal :)
canz i use this with wireless remote triggers? PLS SAY YES!
+meraat haqiqi sure you can, youll need a PC sync cable that MOST triggers come with anyway :)
