- Ser Vs. Estar, How to Choose When Speaking Spanish
There are entire books devoted to Ser and Estar. But through the years, I've figured out 3 simple rules that will cover you in 90% of the situations you encounter.
This isn't perfect, but it's better than memorizing some long list of rules you'll never remember.
Ser vs Estar has been a thorn in the side of Spanish students since the beginning of time...
But in today's video, I break it down to just 3 easy rules, then you give you a Practice Sheet to.... wait for it... PRACTICE!!!
For quick access to the rules:
Rule #1: 2:35 Temporary vs Permanent
Rule #2: 4:33 Location Uses Estar
Rule #3: 5:15 Profession Uses Ser
You can download a mobile/travel friendly video and the Practice Sheet (w/ Answer Key) here: spanishdude.co...

When the Spanish dude said happiness is temporary, I felt that 😔😔😔
But happiness can be part of you too!
Yo *soy* feliz (I am happy)
[I am a happy person, I like being happy]
Yo *estoy* feliz (I am happy)
[Something made me feel happy, so I'm happy now!]
Greetings 🇬🇹👍
@@carloslolxd2594 thanks carlos
I swear everyone felt that.
@Keanu Lucca why did u hack her IG bro where’s the trust
Things will get better :)
A helpful tip is to remember the acronyms DOCTOR and PLACE.
DOCTOR is for SER
D: Description
O: Occupation
C: Characteristics
T: Time
O: Occupation
R: Relation
PLACE is for ESTAR
P: Position
L: Location
A: Action
C: Condition
E: Emotion
I've found this to be really helpful when distinguishing the difference between SER and ESTAR.
Nobody trying to remember acronyms when speaking though
Reborn Footsteps But you would use “ser” for a location of an event because an event is set up while a physical object stands in its location, and nobody sits in the same place forever.
@@cbsteffen can you give an example in a sentence?
lime light “La ceremonia es en mi jardín trasero” means “The ceremony is in my backyard” and “Mi casa está en este calle” means “My house is on this street.” As I somewhat already said, because an event gets set up, it’s supposed to happen at its location. A more physical noun doesn’t seriously have to exist anywhere in particular (unless it’s a building that includes the location in its name which hardly ever applies). Does that make sense?
@@cbsteffen i think you mean a 'concrete noun' but it seems that the translation is 'ser' when the implication is 'tiene lugar' compared to 'is (physically) located'.
My favorite teacher used to tell us, "How you feel, and where you are, is when to use the verb estar."
That's cute, I like it.
No es lo mismo ser triste que estar triste
haha we learned 'for how you feel or where you are, don't forget to use estar'
Estar is for how and where you are!
@@elspanishdude
When you talk about the location of an event you use the verb "ser" instead of "estar". For example "¿Dónde es el concierto?", "¿Dónde fue el asesinato?"
We use SER for the ESSENCE of someone or something. The ESSENCE is mostly permanent like identidy, personality and some qualities that lasts in time.
We use ESTAR for the STATE of someone or something. The STATE is temporary like emotions, locations and actions.
+Luis Angulo "Él ESTÁ muerto" :p
+Francisco Chincoya La muerte es un estado de la persona, no una esencia. Debes recordar que el castellano es un idioma cristiano.
+Luis Angulo this is a great explanation, thank you!
+Luis Angulo Thanks bro! That cleared things up!
Muy bien explicado
as a spanish speaker let me tell you this is the best explanation for the verb to be ever!! superb job dude
+Luciano Dubois Thank you! I'm glad to hear that! Always reassuring to read a comment like this from a native Spanish speaker. Gracias!
We use estan or son with Ustedes and ellos .. how can I know if the speaker means you all or they ?
This... this in seven minutes did more justice for me than it did in any classroom I took in Spanish. So simple and yet, it hit me with an epiphany when I thought twice right when you said that I should think of estar as temporary and es as permanent. Then the explanation rolled on in the video, and it continued to stick in my mind, because it is so true!
Marquis Miller That's awesome Marquis! Thanks so much for sharing. I'm glad it helped you. While this is tricky at the beginning, once it clicks, it's not hard to get correct 90% of the time. It's that last 10% of the time that is persistently tricky.
Looked every where on line about the use of Ser vs Estar.
Couldn't quite understand what the 'Ser' thing was because non of the sentences had it in them, which confused the hell out of me - but you have simplified and explained better than anyone! People need real basic stuff sometimes to understand this stuff! Thank you!!
Ann Redgewell My pleasure! I'm glad you found it helpful. You describe me. I need stuff explained from the beginning slowly and carefully. I make videos for people like me =) Thank you for watching and the kind words. Really makes my day to read stuff like this.
Keep in mind that the verb SER is also used when you are talking about LOCATION OF EVENTS. For exemple: Where is the concert? - ¿Dónde es el concierto? or Where was the murder? - ¿Dónde fue el asesinato?
I had the same problem. I kept seeing apps talk about ser and estar and I was like "I've never once seen the word ser."
I don't really know how I ended up here if I'm a native Spanish speaker HAHAHAH but I'm sure these videos are helpful for people learning our language.
+Andrea Sánchez Vela =)
it does... ...it does
Yo tmbn, no se que tienen pero son adictivos. llevo horas viéndolos. hahah
Ajuda bastante, estou aprendendo.
Ele tem um acento peculiar.
Lo mejor de ver tus vídeos es que no sólo mejoro mi inglés, sino que además aprendo español! nunca me había planteado la difencia temporal entre ser y estar... los habría definido simplemente con Estar= to be somewhere; Ser= to be someone... Qué grande es internet, un gringo enseñándome el por qué de como hablo. Gracias!
You're literally saving my life. Wish me luck on this final
this is funny 'cause as a native spanish speaker we never learnt them as the same word, we never corelated them, i mean we don't need those rules because we never saw them as the same word until we learnt english, and that was just simple, tearcher at school just said: "ser" and "estar" are just one word in english, and i though: great not big deal here
aletz guzman Jajajaj, totalmente de acuerdo.
¡Pues claro que no! Everybody learns his own language in a natural way. Just for knowledge we have to study them.
I like his teachings the BEST of any so far !! :)
hell yeah clayton
dope! I'm walking into spanish class like a boss tomorrow!
Damn son
lmao
I'm crying from how much I needed this in spanish and didnt know how to use it. Thank you ❤👋🏻
Another tip: ing/ed adjectives (boring/bored, exhausting/exhausted, etc.). Use "ser" when translating adjectives ending in "ing", and "estar" when translating adjectives which end in "ed". He is boring --> "él es aburrido" (he's a person I don't like to hang out with because he's always talking about himself and his job and so on); He is bored --> "Él está aburrido" (because the TV show he's watching is rubbish). Again, it kind of has to do with the "permanent/temporary" difference you mention in the vid.
ser + occupations. The verb "estar" does not accompany nouns (except in idioms: "estar pez"). Professions are nouns, so we use the verb "ser". If you want to use "estar", you will need a preposition: Mi amigo es camarero vs. Mi amigo está de camarero.
This man is saving my life
Out of all videos about Ser and Estar, this is probably the best one.
Felicidades, tus clases son muy buenas. Practico mi inglés a través de tus clases de español. Excelente y divertido a la vez.
Yo también practico mi inglés with this guy lol. Today I learned "encounter", "ripe" and I think "incrusted" too from his Spanish lesson hahah
Your videos are very entertaining!
As a native spanish speaker myself trying to explain this exact same duality to an english speaking friend, I feel like it's more a matter of what "to be", as in what actually CONSTITUTES you (ser), versus your current STATUS (está).
You are a doctor (ser). It's what you actually are. The building is (está) there, because it's a building isn't a "there", it just is (está) there, it is its condition or status
You sir are my absolute favorite
Finally someone who speaks my native language teaching the Spanish language, and understands the struggles.
I love to watch your videos dispite I'm a native spanish speaker because you make me think differently about the way we communicate. It's fun to hear the way foreigners understand and comprehend our tongue.
Gracias por la explicación. La introducción captó la atención de los estudiantes. La práctica también fue de mucha ayuda.
I have had a very hard time learning spanish. I have watched tons of other videos and you're videos helped me the best thank you. Gracias
Great video, I liked it, just a comment. "Location" has an exception, when we are talking about location of events, meetings, classes, conferences, parties, etc., in which we can use "es" instead of "estar". For example, when we ask "¿Dónde es el concierto?", we can answer "El concierto es en el estadio". When we ask "¿Dónde es la clase?", we can answer "La clase es en el aula del segundo piso". When we ask "¿dónde es la junta de negocios?", we can answer "La junta es en la oficina del jefe". When we ask "¿Dónde es la graduación?", we can answer "La graduación es en el Hotel del centro". Even when the specific event we are talking about is temporary and we are referring to a location, we do not use "estar verb", but "ser verb" in singular = "es".
Honestly so relieved that I found this channel
The explanation was really great!!
We can even remember the temprorary and permanent rules by simply keeping in mind the ESTAR got the T of Temprorary .. Ser didn't so it's for permanent things.
All your videos have helped so much I have a 9 weeks test tomorrow and for a junior in high school Spanish 2 stresses me out I thought it would click
+xUtubeRandomnezzx Thank you! I'm glad my videos are helping you. How did the 9 weeks test go? What is stressing you out about Spanish 2? The more specific you are with what's causing a problem, the better I can help.
I'm from Latin America and believe it or not I'm getting some useful tips from your videos to improve my English! is like reverse engineering or something like that I suppose. You're doing an amazing work with this channel!
+Christian Roa That makes me so happy to hear. Even before I started this channel, I always felt a huge debt to "Spanish speakers" all over the world. For the hospitality I've been shown when traveling. The help I've been given (and patience) with my Spanish. I never knew there would be a way for me to repay that debt. Makes me very happy. Thanks for sharing. I'm glad I help you with your English.
This summer im gonna watch all your videos they helped Me pass my last exam ☺☺☺
thanks so much I struggle sometimes in Spanish as a sophomore high school student and I have a quiz on ser and estar tommorow
+TheRealSlimShadyXV Great, just remember this is a rule of thumb, not a hard rule, but it will cover you 90% of the time. Good luck!
It's funny to watch this when you're spanish.
Considero que la diferencia entre ser y estar es, probablemente, el fallo más común de cualquier anglosajón (o cualquiera) que esté aprendiendo español.
Sadvianilla Cierto. Es muy duro al principio.
Sadvi Y yo, que soy español, y lo estoy mirando ahora, creo que me estoy olvidando de hablar español. Dios mio, es dificil jajaja
shut up
Odd flex but ok
You're the best teacher
Helped me to learn Spanish and he is awesome
¡gracias! I understand so much better!!!
The way I remember that buildings follow estar conjugation is that estar has the word estate in it and if you have an estate, you are rich and moving around a lot, and not permanently staying anywhere. Thanks for the great videos!
you make it all so much easier..forever thankful
This is awesome! You just described what took me like a half a month to learn in 7 minutes. The blacksmith profession thing makes a lot of sense too.
Thanks so much for the comment Deiven! As a former high school Spanish failure, it certainly resonated with me! Is there anything else messing with your head? I can do a future video on it if you tell me. Glad you found me.
Dude im subbing this dude is nuts, crazy awsome teacher ill know spanish in no time with this guy keep going dude! Please keep teaching me and others spanish!
Thank you for this video. This makes so much sense now.
UNTAA OWOEYE I'm glad!!! I'm going over the past tense for the next six weeks or so. Make sure you're subscribed!
The Real Academy of Spanish says that
SER is: to exist.
ESTAR is: to be in a state.
There are a lot more uses of both of the words, but that´s basically the difference.
SER: to be a human, to be a doctor, to be a student, to be clever, to be a girl, to be an american, to be handsome, to be a cat.
ESTAR: to be happy, to be in a park, to be watching this video, to be resting, to be reading, to be at work, to be in love.
Thank you! This helps alot
No problem :)
Thank you!!! (video was really confusing)
Angélica Amezcua
Nice!
i also noticed that ser is used with adjectives and estar is used with verbs...for the most part.
this is very helpful. Thank you!
thank u muchas !! u saved me a lot time . all these videos around is so confusing and none of them gives a clear idea . but this gives it in the three rules
Thank you; I love your enthusiasm. I am just trying to learn at my own pace how to communicate better with my neighbors as I live in a very Latin community for many decades now. I love the Spanish language and culture. I am very happy with the way you present the information. I find even at my age that it is easy to remember. I appreciate you helping many of us to communicate better with one another. I am glad you are so generous to care to make our skills better. I use a lot of your information to just understand the basics! It is good at any time in life or age to lean a language.
I cannot recall how I came upon your channel, but OMG, am I ever glad I did. I am currently taking a Spanish class and am in week 7, but I am stuck on week 4 - SER vs ESTAR. Gah! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Gracias amigo, muy bien. Estoy feliz ahora 👍
Thanks for simplifying the matter to the beginners.
Espero que he explicado claro :) Hasta Luego.
I am a native Spanish speaker, this helped me a tremendous amount.
i think we use ser for professions because is a characteristic proper of that person. another thing that can be confusing is " he is dead" = " el esta muerto "
+camila fresco I agree! Good exception! Thank you!
You're welcome
cami fresco
im a native spanish speaker.
we see dead/alive as temporary.
Think of it as: there is a time to be alive and a time to be dead. it is a state of being. It could get philosophical bc we could say the the soul goes on forever eventhough our bodies are temporarily alive/dead. Interesting stuff...
much love ;)
What about taxes? Are they also temporary?
Yes, they are temporary. Once you start making billions, you stop paying taxes. =(
Wow! I've watched couple of videos before now without definite understanding. This video surpass them all. Mucho gracias senora.
you really are a god sent.
Just subscribed to this channel. Absolutely awesome. The best i've seen. Well done !!!!!!!!!!!
Man your presentation method is very delightful
You are so brilliant with your delivery. I love it.
This makes things very clear
Me he divertido mucho con el vídeo. Es muy curioso ver cómo la gente percibe el español.
+Marisa Delgado Gracias!
very very helpful, muchas gracias.
Thanks for the advice! Now I know when to use ser and when to use estar!
+Dragoncrusader 77 NO! You know when to use "ser" and "estar" 90% of the time =) This is a rule of thumb, not a hard rule. But yes, you basically know!
Thanks, since you explained it to me like this, I am having less difficult using ' ser ' or ' estar' . Gracias amigo !!
This was VERY helpful. Thank you!
My pleasure! I'm glad it helped you.
As a spanish speaker, we have the same problem when we want to use in english the verb "Hacer" that could be translated like " to do" and like "to make", and the way to learn when tonise each one sometimes it just to get used to. So my recommendation is to heard native spanish speakers, and also to try to use them. For spanish speakers can sound rare use wrongly "Ser" and "Estar" but we will understand 100% with no problems. So a having those 3 recommendations about how to use "Ser" and "Estar"just go and try.
Thank you SO MUCH! I also was just thinking, "What is an easy way to remember that ESTAR is temporary and SER is permanent?" What popped into my head and will likely work for me is that "estar" has a "T" in in for "Temporary." :D
That’s not always true. Location for anything including events can change, but you have to use “ser” when referring to location of any events, and although you can’t do anything about death, you have to use “estar” before “muerto/a/os/as” because you shouldn’t expect someone to die!
Where have you been all my life?! This is so very helpful
You are hilarious but better than that a fabulous teacher. Thank you.
Thanks alot!!! your videos help me alot for my spanish tests and studying!
Keep it going! ;)
+Mateo Manzano Awesome! I'm glad they help. I will keep going =)
Nice explanation. I usually use
Ser: Quality, characteristic, identification.
Estar: Condition, location, transition.
Verrrry helpful. Thank you!!
De nada!
Dude, you need way more subs, those tips are awesome
Mickey Mouse Thank you! I'm glad you liked this video. Not the easiest subject.
Gringo Español YOU REPLIED !!!!!!!!!!
OMG... THIS video was EXACTLY what I needed! IT FINALLY MAKES SENSE!!! Thanks so much! LOVE your teaching style... Thanks for posting such great useful videos!
Nice video.. you have simplified it so nicely.. thanks
I like the way you teach , I´m learning English and This videos are helping to improve my listening skill thanks :) greeting from Dominican Republic (Y)
Lo has explicado muy bien
It think with buildings we use "estar" because they don´t live. I mean, with animals we use "ser", but a building is just an object, an static one.
I´ve never thought on it before... but it sounds logic to me.
¡Saludos desde España!
"but it sounds logic to me." should be "but it sounds logical to me."
Thank you for mentioning the buildings! That was messing me up
This was very informational and helpful. Thanks!
WELL DONE. HELPFUL.
Your videos have been so helpful! I wish I had these quickies years ago
there is a very important exception for "ser" and is "to be dead" even though it seems to be a permanent state you say "ESTA muerto", and the reason is because you use "estar" when the adjective is a participle of a verb. "morir = yo he MUERTO" therefore "el esta muerto" and this apply for, the window is open = "la ventana ESTA ABIERTA (yo he abierto)" but if you use the passive voice of a sentence, for instance: the game is played = "el juego ES JUGADO". you got to use "ser". NOW you say in english" the door is closed. and that can mean, that the door was alredy been closed "la puerta esta cerrada" (then again you use the participle) or that the door is being closed right now "la puerta es cerrada". and you use "ser" because is the passive voice.
pedro pablo Yurrita Great info Pedro! Thanks! We haven't covered participles at all yet.
A famous example was when Gustavo Fring informed Don Eladio's crew that "Don Eladio esta muerto!."
That is superb Pedro--but, I would point out to those who don't know the names of the parts of speech--that even a child, who does not know a participle from a noun, DOES know in time "what sounds right", which is another way of learning. An example in English: This is HE---not This is HIM. Even if you don't know why this is true (because the linking verb does not convey action)--you do know that educated people say HE, not HIM, so it's great that three are two ways to learn this important rule you are discussing. My Cuban Spanish teacher recently yelled at me "sir, quit analyzing, just listen and repeat--we will analyze later!!"
Hei Jordan, Ima subscribe to your website because honestly dude, your videos are my 'go to' lessons prior to my spanish exams for the past two years. this year i used it earlier and Ima nail my exams - feeling confident going into my exams.
Thanks another great video

xosimplyleah Awesome. Glad it helped and glad you're subscribed. I post a new video every week.
Thank you so much for this video, Jordan. I am a new Spanish student and I was so confused. You explain things really well.
AHHH thank you so much that helped a lot!!!! I have finals tomorrow and need to study this stuff so thanks again!
***** My pleasure! Glad it helped you. How did the final go?
I did ok! I did well on that particular part!
I’m not sure if you do do UA-cam or not but thank you so much this video was a big help
Very good explanation.
i can tell that your english is the most perfect of all spanish speakers
Son Dinh Hoang He's a native speaker of English, not Spanish.
Youre great! Im not gringo but I also use your videos to study Spanish.really useful and enjoying.tú eres un hombre maravilloso.¡gracias amigo! :)
Oh I just made a mistake with the word gringo because of bad translation.I think Im gringo.at the same time for english it is true.also stranger, non-native speaker of english :D
Awesome video, really cleared things up for me....YEAH
5:44 i think this makes sense bcz if u are a doctor at some point in your life and then retire, people would still call you Dr. just out of respect. same thing with a lot of other professions. (btw you made this sooo much easier for me to learn, im in Spanish 3 and couldnt grasp Ser vs. Estar until literally this moment so thank you for what you do :))))
This is really helpful thank you. I was really confused with these two before
Gracias!
Wow thank you so much
Helped a lot thanks
Thanks for the. video appreciate it
Me encanta ver estos vídeos, soy español y no sé porqué me río cuando veo tus videos, gringo. I'm feel guilty of my language :S
+yth erxgj Gracias! Saludos desde Florida!
+yth erxgj Yo también me río y me siento súper sabia porque hace que me de cuenta de lo difícil que es en realidad.
thank you! I was getting all confused when to use both.
Thank you very much
You sir, are awesome
