I'm a native speaker of Spanish but I never realized how much we use these verbs. I'd have never imagined this was difficult to understand for Spanish students.
I have been wondering for MONTHS how to say "I wonder" and wondering why it's "me pregunto" you'd think I would have figured it out by now!!! This video, just all the little parts and information, and this channel in general, has helped me so much in 15 minutes!! Honestly, you have NO IDEA. Years of learning Spanish perfectly summed up on this channel. LOVE IT.
"a reflexive verb is a normal verb, but when the subject and the receiver of the action are the same" - my Spanish teacher didn't mention this once, and I couldn't understand what the hell these new verbs were that seemed to be so similar to standard verbs but with a different ending. Jeeeeeeeeeez. These videos are awesome, I'm ploughing through them after each one of my 1-to-1 lessons to actually understand what it is I was supposed to have been taught in them. I've also told my teacher to watch them, and to give them as homework to her other students. Keep up the great work Jordan!
Yeah, it is crazy how different formal teaching and conversational teaching really is. Some academics have their heads so far up their fourth point of contact that they are a bit removed from the needs of actual people to be successful more than their need to feel like they are teaching a strict cirriculum.
You're really good. I've been learning spanish for years and the specifics of when to use "se llama" and "le llama" have had me in knots. Even my Spanish girlfriend couldn't tell me for sure which to use on occasion! But now, I think I've finally got it! When she calls herself it's "se llama" but when she calls another "him" or "her" it's "le llama"
Honest to God I took 8 years of Spanish classes in high school and college and am taking another for professional purposes, and this has taught me more than all the courses thus far! I've always had such a hard time with reflexives and especially reflexives and indirect object pronouns, but I'm finally starting to understand! I agree with a commenter on another video; native speakers don't always make the best teachers when describing grammatical rules. These rules aren't intuitive to English speakers and so it's very helpful having an English speaker explain them so I can break them down logically. Spanish speakers don't have to break down their own rules to explain their speech, so I think it's hard for them to convey them clearly.
It is so interesting to watch this, see how gringos analyze spanish and make rules to understand how our conjugation, grammar, etc work. Same way as english is taught to us, but I gotta say, spanish has A WHOLE LOT of extra and harder rules. For me, It's also kind of a narcissistic exercise to enjoy this. You got yourself a new spanish speaker subscriber!
Dagoberto Ignacio Garcés Lavado honestly though, i think english is a lot harder to learn just because there are a ton of grammatical things that aren’t logical nor follow any solid rules
OMG! The best explanation I've heard, it's so amazing when it clicks and you finally get it. I don't think my Spanish teacher could explain it so clearly.
ive watched probably half of your videos (i watch them based on what i learned in class that day). i just started watching this year and i can say that my comprehension of spanish has increased greatly. so in short...thank you!
+grant decapua Awesome! Thank you so much. I love to hear this. I don't say it enough in the older videos. I would never have been able to keep going this long without reading messages like yours. GRACIAS. Good luck with the Spanish!
Why is it the tiny words in Spanish that cause the most trouble? 'Se' and 'a' are driving me crazy. I hope I can get them eventually. Thanks for the video!
I'm studying english right now and I might help you in spanish doubts. Let me know if you're interested on it. I'm from Colombia hence I'm a native speaker. Greetings.

I thought I was the only one to whom this concept really confused. You are right. I couldn't find anyone else who could clear up the simple fact that reflexive words are not used as much in English. Thank you for clearing up the most confusing thing I've ever encountered in Spanish thus far!!
WOW. Thank you! I have been struggling for months with reflexives mainly because I also avoided to actually learn them because they seemed complex. You have explained this subject so easily for me and many others to understand. Ahora necesito ver todos tus otros videos!
This is brilliantly communicated. Thank you! Plus I really love the way you jump cut the edits to make it all go faster. I wish everything in my life was like that.
I love your videos, I am currently teaching Spanish to Japanese people, I am a native Spanish Speaker but there are a lot of things I cannot explain to them, you are my savior, and in some way you have made me realize how beautiful is Spanish, Thank you!
This man is the Robinhood of Spanish. 20 year. 20 years I have paid all that money. I come across these videos and I get a light bulb moment. As an adult. You can’t not take Spanish from a native speaker. You need someone like the Spanish Dude to explain how it works. Because he knows what your thinking.
I LOVE the pace of these videos. Lots of info, repetition and doesn't take the rest of my life. I have adult ADHD (or I'm just busier than not). Thank you for your time!
Se is everywhere! I didn't know what that was! Thanks Jorge! I've been studying for almost 2 weeks. The reflexive, direct and indirect still confuse but im starting to understand it all! I almost gave up just because of that. Gracias ❤
Some reflexive verbs are also reciprocal (recíprocos), which has an slight different meaning, and only work in plural. For example the sentence "ellos se ven en el espejo" means "they see themselves in the mirror" but means as well "they see each other in the mirror". Reciprocal verbs are those where the actions are done by the subjects to each other and not to themselves. A clear example of verb that is pure reciprocal is "to fight" or "pelearse" in spanish, you don't fight yourself usually, but conjugates like reflexive. For example "we fight each other" is "nos peleamos". Another interesting verb is "amarse", when used in singular is reflexive "me amo", but in plural is usually reciprocal "nos amamos" (usually translated as "we love each other", but can mean as well "we love ourselves")
I have been struggling with reflexive verbs. HOW DID I NOT REALIZE ME LLAMO IS REFLEXIVE. Having that as a reference makes it all seems so clear now! Ty

+Gringo Español This may be a stupid question, but how would you make a reflexive verb in the Yo form past tense? Thank you for your videos they are a great help! (:

[EDIT] After sorting the comments by 'Newest,' I now see a number of posts about both of these typos. Great stuff, Jordan. ¡Muchas, muchas gracias!
Hola Jordan. Muchísimas felicidades por este vídeo. Soy profesor de español en Sevilla (España) y una de las cosas más locas y difíciles de aprender para mis alumnos ingleses y americanos son precisamente los pronombres reflexivos. Los estudiantes franceses, italianos o portugueses no tienen ese problema, porque sus idiomas vienen del latín, como el español, y el sistema es parecido. A los gringos, en cambio, todo esto hace que les vuele la cabeza. Gracias y enhorabuena por explicarlo con tanta claridad. Me encantan tus vídeos.
When you’re taking an online Spanish course… which basically has you try to learn these concepts with a bare ass book. Thank GOD people like you are out here actually making this crap make sense. Muchas gracias amigo.
im taking college spanish courses thank god i found this channel my professor will never explain anything in english and im constantly lost on what hes teaching us
6:35. *nos sentamos Reflexive verbs, not to be confused with pronominal verbs. Me subo al autobús, this sentence isn't reflexive, it's actually pronominal (VERB SUBIRSE). If you add "a mí mismo" to these types of sentences, it makes sense when it's a reflexive sentence, but not when it's a pronominal sentence. Example: Me lavo el pelo (a mí mismo) Makes sense. Reflexive, "ME" is "Complemento indirecto" because "el pelo" is "Complemento directo". Me subo al autobús (a mí mismo??), this doesn't make sense at all, pronominal. "Se no cumple una función sintáctica en una oración con un verbo pronominal. Se puede cumplir función de CD o CI en una oración reflexiva." Of course, reciprocal sentences is a case apart.
Your vid made me remember when they taught this in elementary I literally couldn't understand it and I already spoke Spanish (I'm Mexican I've always live in Mexico). :-D
Great video, my only comment would be the cutting. You cut the video so tight it seems very rushed. Slow the cutting down and let natural pauses take place, it gives the viewer time to process the information. When you power through a video trying to make it fit a certain time frame, it can leave the viewer feeling rushed instead of having the time to process the information. Overall great content, just a bit rushed.
If he slowed it up. It would go over 10 min. On UA-cam. You really can’t have over 20 min videos so he delivers the info and move on to something else’.
My goal be an spanish translator for reasons when I have my business / company/ website I want it in English -Spanish. I really want to learn Spanish gained experiences.
Adding to the confusion is some speakers will make verbs reflexive when they shouldn´t be. Like comer. "Hoy dia me comi un trozo de pizza. " So they use the reflexive when they specify a certain food they eat but if they say a general statement like "I ate". Its "Comi."
Thank you so much on that video it helped me understand it more... but I couldn't find the video of where and when I should use esto, esta, estas, and estamos. Thanks again
Also in the worksheet the verb "preocupar" is used as in "Me preocupo por el futuro". But in other examples I find on the internet they use it like "gustar" and not a reflexive verb, such as "Nos preocupan los animales que vimos en la calle" and "Me preocupa que no haya tenido noticias de tu hermano en una semana." Am a little confused here.
The other day when I was reading about reflexive verbs, I contacted my teacher ( college Spanish I) and I asked her if I could just add “se” to the end of any verb that can be done to oneself and make it into a reflexive verb. She said NO. She said it is not done that way and there is a set of specific reflexive verbs. So, I could not take the verb enseñar and make it a reflexive by adding se, enseñarse, and say, “(Yo) Me enseñó la lección de español.” So then today I watched your video to review Spanish reflexive verbs for my final exam tomorrow heard you state that any verb could be turned into a reflexive verb if it can be done to oneself. Now I am very unsure which is true.
Dude! 🤯 I’m not sure if you explained that amazingly well, probably, or after 5 years of studying Spanish I was finally ready to hear it but holy guacamole, by George, I think I got it! Thanks for that. Wish you talked a little bit slower but I can pause and go back. Otherwise, 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Thanks again
jesus christ this guy must be a god at editing
So, I could not take the verb enseñar and make it a reflexive by adding se, enseñarse, and say, “(Yo) Me enseñó la lección de español.”
So then today I watched your video to review Spanish reflexive verbs for my final exam tomorrow heard you state that any verb could be turned into a reflexive verb if it can be done to oneself. Now I am very unsure which is true.
Love this! Save my time a lot and also very infomative!
Awesome! Thank you! Glad it was helpful!

Emily Bouchard My pleasure! Yes, please do. This was part of a really good series. Mainly about pronouns. Direct, indirect, double. Along with this and Verbs Like Gustar. Check those out specifically if this one was helpful. They're all kind of related.

Gringo, me pasa lo mismo con el inglès; lo amo.
La parte donde dices que blew away con "me pregunto", me pasa OFFER, con palabras en inglès de ese tipo.
Me quedo enamorado por la complejidad y la lògica del idioma.
