For me the best way to understand this complicated stuff: TO BE: two verbs in spanish i) Ser ii) Estar My recipe is: --------------------------- Number one verb "Ser" means a PERMANTENT condition Number two verb "Estar" means a TEMPORARY condition For example "how are you? " in spanish you are talking about a TEMPORARY condition you must say "¿cómo estás?" in this case. If you say "I'm a man" you are talking about a PERMANENT condition so you must say "Soy un hombre" NEVER "Estoy un hombre". Other example If I translate"I'm drunk" into spanish with "soy borracho" I mean a permanent condition I mean I'm an alcoholic because "soy" implies a PERMANENT SITUATION. But if I mean a temporary condition I'd say "estoy borracho", tomorrow I'll be handover and the day after tomorrow I'll feel ok again.
Kris Jordan hey pretty! I can show you how to speak Spanish. Even we can texting by cell phone if you want. There's only one way to learn and speak Spanish, or other languages: PRACTICE.
Kris Jordan ooh! Wow. I would like to know Spain. Quiero probar la tortilla de patatas, paella, chicharro al chacolì y demás. I know there are many places to visit. Ronda, Figueres, Las Ramblas, La Concha, Marvella. I love España. And also I speak Russian as well.
I am a native speaker of Spanish language and can tell what... I never think in that because i'm a native and to me is so easy don't think in this, to me is weirdest you see complicated because to me somethings of your language are complicated for example the use of another and other is so hard knows when use it. PS: Please don't kill me for the bad english.
my friend ..i just realized for the past month...never go to learn a language in class before you learn youtube..i have been learnish spanish from youtube and i can imagine my progress in just 1 month
@Cyberpunk Cuz Ana actually wants to make us spanish speakers that can talk spanish freely and fluently (and she is a good person in general) - if she make her online classes good (which is the case with her) more people watch and she is making money that way, but if the teacher is at school, I mean not every teacher at school, but these htat are at schools have the opportunity to not teach good and to not care (not just the teachers that teach you languages every type of teacher have the opportunity to do such a thing...Is is good is another question) and still taking the same amount of money for doing basically nothing...Which I think is irresponsible btw When I think of it, it actually made sense 😂
She's most definitely a Jedi, and we are her padawans. Watching her first video and the ones shes made to day, is incredible to see how much shes learned as a teacher and how she applies to her lessons!
I'm from Poland and I study Spanish and English at School. I have studied English since I was 4 years old. Now I am 15 and I'm talkig English quite good. Ser is used to classify and identify permanent or lasting attributes. If the general rule isn´t specific enough for you, think of the acronym DOCTOR, which stands for Description, Occupation, Characteristic, Time, Origin, and Relationship. Estar is used to indicate temporary states and locations. If the general rule doesn´t suffice, think of the acronym PLACE, which stands for Position, Location, Action, Condition, and Emotion.
I didn't understand the difference and then i googled it. So i posted it, if anyone else had the same problem! And it's cool and fun way to remember ti! :D
Because I am also an etymologist (meaning not just a linguist), I think of "ser" as the sedentary "to be" verb and "estar" as the "to be" verb about standing. Here's how I think of the DOCTOR acronym as of what would make "ser" sedentary: Description-whatever directly describes a noun "sits" as true by staying that way for at least a long, long time. Occupation-such a thing "sits" as for assigning someone a title. Characteristic-"sits" as part of someone or something. Time-time "sits" by always moving forward and never pausing or reversing. Origin-a beginning that now "sits" in the past. Relationship-This fact "sits" by remaining true and can't be changed if it's consanguinity (relationship via birth). Here's how I think of the PLACE acronym as of what "estar" has to do with standing: Position-such a thing typically means standing. Location-for a physical noun because an object stands in its location, and a person cannot remain in the same place forever, although he or she might sit there for a while. Action-such a thing "stands" while being done. Condition-this "stands" in someone or something currently and doesn't directly describe the noun. Emotion-how someone feels for a seriously known limited time "stands" in the person's mind by not remaining there for more than a few days.
Spanish is a beautiful language, yet it gets hard sometimes while learning verbs and conjugations. I'm Mexican and I speak Spanish, but I relate the Spanish learning process to my experience in learning French; they're so much alike. And just to help others to keep thing clear, there are a lot of differences between Spanish in each country. An easy example is the pronoun "vosotros" used in Spain, which in Latin America is "Ustedes". I would highly recommend you to learn Spanish from any country and later focus on a specific country, so you can learn all the idiomatic expressions and the grammar changes. Very good video by the way! If I had to learn spanish as a second language I would totally use it. PD: I wrote this in English so most people can understand it. :)

Hi Ana you do a phenomenal job posting these videos and teaching us this wonderful language. Muchas gracias! What you are teaching here is not all that hard to understand. You just have spend an hour or 2 a day or however long you want to study for and just memorise. One can learn this in a short amount of time I believe. I love Spanish I wish I learned this language years ago but it's never too late!

Hi, if you guys want to learn some spanish with youtube users I may recommend doing it with colombians, mexicans or costa rican people, they have neutral spanish accent and you will understand them very well :)
El acento neutro no es propio de ningún país compadre, todos hablan con acento y es obvio que no lo notes en ti mismo. Cuando se habla de forma culta, en una reunión, en los noticieros, dando clases en universidad, por ej. se busca un hablar más neutro y en éstos casos incluso los chilenos tienen acento neutro. Pero en el diario vivir, en ningún país se habla sin acento.
Gracias Anna. I am following all your videos to learn Spanish. It is my Foreign Language class now in my Ph. D. here in the Philippines. God bless you more.
I learned that for SER you use the acronym DOCTOR - Description, Occupation, Characteristic, Time/Date,Origin, Relationship. For ESTAR use the acronym PLACE - Position, Location, Action, Condition, Emotion
Yes! That is so helpful. And, for those like myself (lol) who need additional help remembering the words each letter of the acronyms stand for, one can think about the fact that one usually wants to find 'a doctor with good qualities' (or 'a quality doctor) to help one remember that ser/DOCTOR = qualities... and that one usually wants to visit or own 'a place that is in good condition' to help one remember that estar/PLACE = condition or essence ('the essence of a place'). It's not perfect, but it helps one remember what TYPE of words make up each acronym. Also, remembering that a doctor is an occupation and position and location are types of places can help jump start the memory and help one fill in the words for the rest of the letters.
Hi Ana I have a question ? Bty I like your lessons Im just curious , I heard you say Jedi ?? The religion ?? I will have to look that up .. That is very interesting - First I've heard it ..

I'm really struggling with the gender in Spanish In my native language (Arabic) everything has a gender. But unfortunately it is different from Spanish, which make it harder 😰 About 75% of gensers of nouns are the same in Spanish and Arabic, but what about the others?
I've had Spanish I five times and Spanish II twice...I'm "better" than when I started, but I'm still not fluent. To learn a foreign language is like learning mathematics...practice, practice, and more practice. If you don't, you'll never learn it. I've learned that lesson "fluently". Todavía lo estoy estudiando. The "Butterfly Spanish" teacher does a very good job...very thorough!...and personable. I like her presentations.
How you feel = Como te sientes OR como te sientas (feeling = sentimiento) How do you feel today? = ¿Cómo te sientes hoy? How are you? = ¿Cómo estás? Where you are = donde estas OR donde estés Where are you? = ¿Dónde estás?
"Vos" is used as "tú" is some South American countries. In Spain it sounds like old Spanish, something like "thou" in English. She is probably Mexican so she teaches her Spanish; as a teacher I would teach this other forms as well.
Since I have been learning Russian, and now Spanish I see there are many grammar rules that are actually quite similar. It's very interesting! You are a great teacher by the way, your videos are much appreciated!
Never knew there would be a religion of Jedi. She should learn about Catholicism where our Lord Jesus Christ established the Catholic Church 2,000 years ago. You guys should check it out. I strongly recommend it. It's all about salvation of souls. God bless!
Cesar Ortiz With all due respect... I totally disagree. With nearly 40 million Spanish speakers who DO use vosotros, I think it's more than worth the small bit of effort required to learn one more conjugation, especially if one is already bothering to learn the language in the first place. Also, it's much like learning to drive on a manual transmission compared to learning to drive an automatic transmission. Learn it from the get-go and it's an aspect of the overall skill that will be with you if or when you need it. Don't learn it, and you cheat yourself out of full mastery of the skill. And, of course, learning the vosotros is, by far, the more accessible of these two instances because it doesn't require access to any special equipment, supplies, etc.. So, in my opinion, there's really no excuse to not learn it. Thankfully, I had a Spanish teacher who strongly advocated this philosophy.
Cesar Ortiz In your initial comment you said 'Unless you're planning on visiting Spain, don't bother with vosotros.' So, I was pointing out the fact, that, the people of Spain happen to make up nearly 40 million of the 350 million native Spanish speakers... which means, about one out of every nine native Spanish speakers DOES use vosotros, even if you don't. And, I don't think it matters that these one out of every nine native speakers who do use vosotros do not live in the Americas. Not learning vosotros because it's only used in Spain seems like an outdated concept from the era before the internet, globalization and increased international travel when most people speaking Spanish in the Americas would likely only encounter other Spanish speakers who were also in or from the Americas.
+Droosmom1970 I was asking cause I came across the word "ser" in a sentence and didn't understand how it was being used when not in these conjugated forms?
For me the best way to understand this complicated stuff:
TO BE: two verbs in spanish
i) Ser
ii) Estar
My recipe is:
---------------------------
Number one verb "Ser" means a PERMANTENT condition
Number two verb "Estar" means a TEMPORARY condition
For example "how are you?

I like your analogy, I also have a difficult time remembering terms, so using tricks such as these definitely helps
Your mnemonics are so helpful! gracias a usted!!

Una americana antigua enseñando a los americanos modernos.
Pues si la verdad XD
How you feel and where you are, always use the verb “estar”
I'm the only dumb one who's too confused here or it happen to others too in their first Spanish class😢
It's you... lol
😂😂😂😂😂
I've had Spanish I five times and Spanish II twice...I'm "better"
than when I started, but I'm still not fluent.
“How you feel or where you are always use the verb estar”
This from AIB channel helped me a lot ✌🏽
How you feel = Como te sientes OR como te sientas (feeling = sentimiento)
How do you feel today? = ¿Cómo te sientes hoy?
How are you? = ¿Cómo estás?
Where you are = donde estas OR donde estés
Where are you? = ¿Dónde estás?
"Vosotros" también existe!!! haha
+seriekekomo So does Vos. But you do not use it, do you?
"Vos" is used as "tú" is some South American countries. In Spain it sounds like old Spanish, something like "thou" in English. She is probably Mexican so she teaches her Spanish; as a teacher I would teach this other forms as well.
+seriekekomo Muchas gracias por compartirlo y explicarnos la manera en que se habla en tu país :) Saludos desde México.
Jhon Adam vosotros is used in like only Spain
what religion is jedi

The best religion. Yoda is our Lord.
These are the best Spanish lessons, gracias!
Love looking at her and learning.
Nice 😂
Jajajajajaj, I speak Spanish and I’m here just to see the American suffer with the verbs “Ser o Estar”... as we suffer with the “Verb To Be”
Jajajaja
jajaja todo es risa hasta que estas aprendiendo alemán... Ahora entiendo mejor a los angloparlantes y su sufrimiento con el español!

God bless!

She's beautiful.
You're the best Ana!! 👍
where is ''vosotros''...?
Unless you´re planning a visit to Spain, don´t bother with "vosotros" in América we use "ustedes".
Planning to work in Spain so why I wonder about ''vosotros'' in case if they don't use it's OK for me...It was just a question )))
Would totally love an expanded lesson of this one! Like when you would use the term ser? And examples of it.
She just gave you examples of when to use ser. Nationality, profession, etc I'm not sure how much more she could say
+Droosmom1970 I was asking cause I came across the word "ser" in a sentence and didn't understand how it was being used when not in these conjugated forms?
You have no idea how useful this session was for me.. Muchas gracias for this lesson...
