Not sure why so many hair metal fans (of which I include myself) are getting butthurt. Oswalt is critiquing the music videos, not the music directly. The videos WERE pretty bizarre, you have to admit. The spark factory joke made me laugh pretty good.

I grew up in the 70s.. hated disco with a white hot passion. Even the dedicated rock stations were playing that gott damn Bad Girls twice an hour. Then in the 80s butt rock came along and it was obvious from the get go that it sucked far far worse than disco ever could have dreamed of. Butt rock may be the single worst thing that ever happened to music in the history of forever.

I had a mullet for the eminently sane reason that I was cutting my own hair at the time and it was just too annoying to try and cut the back. I kinda liked it. It is really hard to fuck up my hair. I later realized that for some reason, this haircut had become a thing. I also started the whole bathroom sink chain as necklace thing. But I, at least, had the good sense to keep the damn stopper on the chain as it really was a bathroom sink chain. I do miss my punk days. Not saying I, myself, acutally started these things, but I was certainly WAY ahead of the curve.

I think Zappa is a better source than your text that's full of gay bashing and racist sentiments.
Why people insist that their opinions on art are to be accepted as fact is always interesting. It's as though somehow people believe they have some insight into creation that others do not. The irony is that I find these people tend not to create at all, but their opinion seems like that which may come from someone who is a true master of their craft. Thing is, those who are tend not to waste their time debasing the art other's may enjoy on the internet, because they're too busy living in their world of obsession. That's the self serving narcissistic culture that the social aspects of the internet has a tendency to breed though. Hate on all that you don't enjoy or understand to find some sense of validation in your own existence.

You know Slayer and Metallica? Or Megadeth or Exodus or Kreator or Testament? Hell, even Death or Morbid Angel? Guess what, all 80's metal bands!

+Razor Tongue This is true, but do you remember that tiniest of time on MTV they called Headbanger's Ball? That was the ONLY time that kind of 80s metal (isn't it called thrash?) would get aired. The most popular metal in the 80s was the type he is referring to, so much so that it defines 80s metal for most people. Bon Jovi was the mainstream. Metallica was practically underground in comparison during that time.

Nurdbilly is right, Metallica, Judas Priest, Motorhead etc. were looked on as "alternative" (Only loadies, weirdos, losers, etc listened to them) in 85. By that time Bonzo was dead and so was Zeppelin, Van Halen had softened up and Kiss took off the makeup. AC/DC was kind of the flag bearer of "hard rock" at the time and they were never a metal band to begin with but more a hard rocking boogie blues rock band. AC/DC kicks ass BTW.

I'm pretty sure hes talking about only the 80's glam/hair metal band, since those were the only bands that dressed up really extravagant. Some people might get confused that he might also be referring to all the other types like thrash, death, speed, etc. but hes mostly describing glam/hair metal.

Just a side note: I used to make fun of The Darkness like everyone else...until I saw them at Rock on the Range 2012 and oddly enough, they're really pretty solid and it was a good show. I was really surprised by their set. I never expected it based on the one song that people know (which was cheesy as hell). Just sayin...

Say what you want about it but apparently it worked, and there would be lines of women for any 80s metal band. Today, now they're grown up and they're school teachers, one second they're tight dictators, then put on Poison, and "AHHHH BRETT MICHAELS *faint*"
Patton was a teenager in the 80's, he should have remembered that.

The funniest part of this is all of the sad goofballs coming to defend 80's music. I was there. Most of it sucked. MTV didn't show any good bands. It was 24/7 un-watchable crap. Hair metal was shitty music played by homoerotic posers.
