F1 US Grand Prix at Indianapolis 2005 (The GP that went very wrong!)

  • The 2005 USA F1 GP was the most unique grand Prix of modern times - and a complete fiasco! I was there and this is what I saw. The video starts with the police escort that goes a little wrong!!! The politics behind the events still effects the sport today, although many of the those at the sharp end have moved (or have been moved) on. I post this video in the hope that never again will the sport treat its fans so shabbily.

My wife and I had come from England and paid the extra to get the VIP coach with police escort, to get us to the track on the big day and I think it is fair to say we were very unhappy.
It was not so much that no one was prepared to try and find a solution, it was more the fact that there was no advance warning for us in the crowd. People watching at home on TV knew there could be a problem and were ready for this disappointment, but those of us in the ground had no idea, right up until they all retired.

That's the point, spectators couldn't expect what was gonna happen and I'm sad to see that these things happen in F1, an international sport, but this happens in others categories for sure.
I was also dissappointed because although I was at home and isn't the same, I love this sport and when this happened I felt like shit but can't be compared with your experience.
If you got a great experience travelling... but I understand your opinion, obviously.

Bottom line is F1 (which is a Motorsport for developing and innovating race cars for the cars you drive in the street) did not come prepared to take on a corner that was built in 1912...

Absolutely correct. Michelin, being French, totally screwed everyone. Michelin knew when they left Canada that they weren't going to race in the USGP at Indianapolis. How do I know this? I stayed in the same hotel as the Michelin race crew. I asked them why their trailer and PR display with Bib the tire mascot wasn't set up in the commercial area. The way that they answered that simple question indicated something was fishy. By the way, it never was set up. They were likely afraid of vandalism from those rowdy American fans that they planned to defraud.
So to take your point, Bendt Fender28, if Michelin is incapable of building a proper tire for a set of COMPLETELY known conditions; why would anyone trust them to build a tire for a set of COMPLETELY unknown conditions? Those unknown conditions would be the North American roadways.
I have bought many sets of tires since that race in 2005 but Michelin was not even considered, and never will be, because of that trick that they pulled.
Oh, people will say, they paid for your ticket for the next years race. Yeah, great. Anyone that has spent a USGP race weekend knows that the ticket price was the smallest cost of the weekend. In fact, compared to other GP races it's a screaming deal. This is likely the only error that Tony George made in hosting the USGP. The ticket prices should have been double. I don't think that would have impacted attendance much, if at all.
I see at the last race in Baku, Azerbaijan, that Pirelli has had their contract extended through the end of the 2019 season. Here's an example of a company that had problems, took responsibility, got their heads down and worked the problems out. Today they are a company that is in control of the tire situation in F1.

Michelin was unaware of how abrasive the Indy oval was after it was resurfaced late winter/early spring.
Bridgestone was aware since Firestone supplies tires to IRL, and they had their testing/trials in May (keep in mind Bridgestone owns Firestone).
One could argue that it's 'unsporting' that neither the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, nor Bridgestone informed Michelin of the track conditions (although truth be told I am not certain if Michelin were, or were not informed...My guess is Michelin had no clue about the abrasive track).

It is an expression, not a statement of fact! It is a tradition unique to Formula One and other FIA races, that the National Flag of the country in which a race is occurring is used to start the race. In the event of an equipment failure a green flag will still be used to start and then be displayed in the pit area to show it is open, hence the expression racing under green flag conditions.

Go around a couple times then I'm confused as to where the rest went? I don't have a radio I was dumbfounded. Then the water bottles and debris began to pelt the track. Plus was I got to see F1 cars, but I was so very disappointed.

I can sure you they were far from full! What happened is that when everyone realised what was going on (remember unlike those watching on the telly, we knew nothing about the events unfolding in front of us), people left in a long stream. Why the look so full in my video is because the people on the outside of the track made there way to the half empty main grandstands to see the end of the race and the trophy presentation.

"By now the drivers knew." Not by that stage they didn't. They weren't even told that they were going out to the grid, and when they did they were only told - on the grid with about 5 minutes to go - what would happen (Priestley, 2012). Several drivers including Raikkonen and Coulthard didn't want to pull in. I don't really lay the blame at anyone's door. A chicane would have not only advantaged the Michelin runners unfairly. In context, nor do I blame Ferrari: the boot was on the other foot in Barcelona and Ferrari were made to race with tyres that were not suitable, and Michael Schumacher subsequently had two punctures. It ought to have been run as a non-championship race and then you can do whatever, BUT only if the World Championship race was rescheduled to later in the year. It's Indianapolis, so they could have run in October or November as they had done between 2000 and 2003.

    @ Kevin Going
The Speedway resurfaced the oval, and it ended up being very abrasive.
In May of 2005 while doing time trials, and testing - the Firestone (Bridgestone owns Firestone) shod IRL cars were having issues with excessive tire wear...They fortunately had more than enough time to develop a more durable tire for the Indy 500.
Bridgestone was well aware of this, and didn't say a word - so here's Michelin oblivious to what was going on a month earlier.
I remember the issue back in May with the IRL cars (was watching some of the testing), and when unpacking at the hotel in Indy the Friday before the race - there were reports on the local news of some F1 cars having tire failures...I remember thinking to myself that 'I hope all is alright for Sunday'.
I also attended the following F1 race at Indy in 2006 in which Michelin provided us free tickets (4 tickets that we had in 2005 - plus 2 additional tickets for free for 2006).

I know a lot of people blame Max Mosely for this but:
After The accidents of Senna and Ratzenberger at Imola in 1994 safety became of even bigger importance than before(the italian parliament were trying to get F1 banned worldwide), so Max Mosely and Sid Watkins had to develop ways of making F1 much safer(wheel tethers etc.) And one of these things was that every part of a track had to be rigourously tested before it was used, and if it didn't meet the safety requirements then it had to be altered and RE-TESTED.( that's why the final corner at the mexican GP is being changed so it is different to when it was used back in the early 1990's) If a chicane had been put in and there had been an accident there causing a driver serious injury, then all the people at the top would have no defence against a massive U.S court case. if Michelin had been informed by bridgestone or the track owners about the relayed track and how abrasive it was, they could have asked to do some testing of tyres at indianapolis and found the problem and either:
    a) reported this to the FIA and they could have put a chicane in with all the proper requirements and checks.
    or
    b) had time to fix their tyres!
Mostly from Sky F1's 'architects of F1' for Max Mosely

Disappointment and frustration summed up that fiasco on that fateful Sunday afternoon. We'd been coming from the central Florida area to view that event since it's inception back in 2000. Beginning with the 2002 race, we had decided to make the drive and camp out trackside, rather than booking air flights, due to the previous 2001 race that saddled behind the 9/11 'Staged Event' that halted air travel afterwards. Even that ended with an unscheduled overnight layover on our way back to Florida. It wasn't so much a lost money issue as was the waste of time. My person opinion from the two previous U.S. GP's, convinced me that Grandstand seating(and their pricing) just didn't hold the value that we enjoyed with infield watching areas, especially the back straight that leads down to track-bridge walkover & the S turn. Listening to those cars ratcheting down their gears & their tires throwing off bits & pieces into the S turn is impossible to describe. Truly, the best part of the track.

The GP's consistently had close if not over 100,000 people attend each race based upon records posted by IMS and news agencies. It was a well attended race. The track always looked empty because it's so huge and there is enough seating for close to 300,000 people. I hope F1 comes back someday. I get a little satisfaction with MotoGP now running at IMS. They're great fun to watch.

You may be better Googling it Kevin, because depending on who you support you will get umpteen good reason why. I think Paul Stoddard (an old workmate of mine) who was running the Minardi team at the time, summed it up best and most fairly, in a letter he sent me a few days after the event.

Stoddart may say whatever he wants to the public after the fact...the fact is, however, he had raced, and he knew full well that he would have had to face sanctions and penalties just as bad as the Michelin teams who chose to not run for safety purposes, or worse if he hadn't, considering there were no actual problems with his specific cars or their tires, and hence there was absolutely no reason he couldn't start the race...Further still, he also knew full well that he held a very great chance of scoring major points in the WC, and that he would potentially have taken a significant prize money boost for those points, which for a team like Minardi, whose future as of June of '05 was still more than uncertain, would probably have come in quite handy. So, therefore, I'm sorry but I do not believe that he would have pulled out at any point, even if that's what he wants to have people believe...

    • @RBenjo21
      @RBenjo21 4 роки тому

Stoddart said that he didn't gain anything out of the event, because Jordan scored so many points that day it stopped Minardi from potentially beating them in the championship. In the end, Jordan would have beaten Minardi without this race (Monteiro scored a point at Spa) anyway.

No matter what the opinions of others are. The FIA is at 100% blame for ALL OF IT. Sure Michelin did a bad job with their tires, BUT the company said "We have defective race tires no matter what compounds we brought here therefore tires are not safe to use here. It's either you change the track layout with the chicane at the oval turn or we get to change tires after an x amount of laps OR we withdraw ALL teams and drivers with Michelin tires on safety grounds." The FIA under cold president Max Mosley REFUSED to budge on safety issues out of gross negligence which under U.S. law meant that EVERYBODY including the FIA under (again) cold president Max Mosley, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, F1 management group, the drivers, teams, and Michelin tire company all would've been punished by U.S. law enforcement for using unsafe defective products (Michelin F1 race tires) out of gross negligence. Everybody on that side were glad they did withdraw because somebody could've gotten hurt or killed and by somebody it could've been a driver, a track worker, or even way worse a spectator watching on site and Max Mosley didn't give a f*** about the bigger issue which is safety which should've NEVER been set aside for a proper racing event EVER!!!!

I was at the race as well. I have to say the blame goes to one place, Michelin. How dare they arrive at the "Racing Capital of the World" and not be prepared. They tried something with their compounds that did not work. They did not have a suitable back up as prescribed by the rules. They were caught with their pants down. How would it possibly be fair to the Bridgestone drivers who were prepared, to change the course layout because their competitors were not prepared?

Have you tried to get from a Hotel in the City, to the track on Race Day? I did it the following year when I was there for pleasure and it took 3 hours getting in and 4 hours going out. So buying a couple of police men for 15 mins is good value and save fuel.

I remember that weekend well. That a farce. That's all I can say. I was a brand new F1 fan at the time and when I saw all the Michelin runners pull in at the end of that formation lap, I didn't know what to think. All I know is that this basically killed F1 in America. I know the race is coming to Texas now, but the way F1 has been sanitized and slowed down even since 2005, coupled with the bad memories from Indy 2005 I think has basically ended any chance of F1 conquering America.

I put most of the blame on Michelin. Max and Todt had a contributing factor to this BS but that was it, a contributing factor. Bridgestone were prepared with a tire that was safe enough to run but Michelin were too aggressive with their compound and the left rear tire didn't hold up. To this day I will never buy Michelin tires, plenty of other good brands out there

Totally Mosley's fault and I understand blaming Todt somewhat but he also said it was up to the FIA and Michelin to figure out what to do. If Mosley had said "Race with the chicane, and Michelin runners score no points", how is Todt NOT going to go along with it? Mosley IMO is the sole person to blame in all this.

+ihatemadmoe there was nothing wrong with the Bridgestone tires or the teams running them (like Ferrari) so there's no reason they shouldn't have raced. They were contractually bound to anyway at any rate, and should not have felt the need to sacrifice the possibility of scoring World Championship points for other people's mistakes. Would Michelin teams have retired (or have wanted to retire ) the 16 cars that were using Michelin tires if the tables had been turned and Bridgestone had brought faulty tires? No (or at least highly unlikely ).

To be honest Dunkle many did.
I think we would have done also, were it not we had to wait for the coach to take us back. What followed was 1 1/2 hours of watching six cars going round, with the gap getting bigger and bigger. The only race overtake was when MS come out of the pits behind his team mate, but decide to take him before the next corner (as only MS would try and do). It was soooo boring and I am a life long F1 Fan!

Ferrari and the other Bridgestone teams are not to blame here. Very bad conclusion of yourself. I can understand your anger, but its not the fault of the remaining teams. They did their job. Michelin did not! Why they should accept a last minute change, because other make mistakes. Its not a sport, its a business.

I blame Michelin for supplying a tyre that could not handle the track. There fault at the end of the day.. Ferrari did nothing wrong.. Annoying alright but thats F1.The race will always go ahead.. A large number did leave, but for us at least it was out first time at the USA GP and we did want to enjoy the experience. Of course it was a very boring race apart from the one moment when MS nearly put Rubens off. No money was refund by the tour organisers to us, but many did get their money back.
It did not stop us returning the next year and that time we found a better viewing place and enjoyed the Race greatly.

I always wonder why people think its Max Mosley's fault in this? The problem was the Michelin tires. They were the reason why the race wasn't run. Why should Ferrari agree to a chicane at the last turn when they brought the right tires, Bridgestone? Plus, that turn is the highlight of the course - going full speed on that turn down the straightaway. To do that would have been idiotic. Mosley and Ferrari shouldn't have agreed to any change. Michelin was at fault.

Lol the best F1 race i've ever seen. And Tiago Monteiro on 3rd position. Big lol. The solution was a stop for new tires every 8 laps. But Michelin wasn't able to bring enough tires to the track. Michelin even wasn't able to bring tires that go at high speed. What a bad message from a tire constructor. Michelin robbed you. Bomb the frogs.
