Wow... that's impressive. I just talked to a guy yesterday that bought two more Norseman's because he's in love with them. I know carry options come down to personal preference, but I'm really impressed that the Southard trumps the Norseman for you.
Thanks for the review. I can't wait to get one. Price isn't bad when u consider materials used.... Plus a real Southard you can't touch fro less then a G.
Thanks for the comments!! Great vid. Noted on the jimping and "speedbumps" I actually quite like that discription of them. haha I wanna see a hello kitty bandade next time
Spyderco's knives are definitely very capable and functional. That's one of the reasons people like collecting them. And Spyderco uses premium steels. The steel on the southard might just be one of the best existing steels for knives out there today. Any custom knife for the price of the southard won't be in the same league as this one. Fixed blade custom knives are generally alot cheaper than custom folders as well btw.
Beautiful knife. The steel should be great, I have a knife in M390 and it has excellent edge retention so 204P should be a real performer. Considering everything you get in this knife, I don't think it's over-priced compared to competition. Top end steel, bearings in the pivot, titanium liner and lock side, design from a custom maker. I'm looking forward to getting mine this week hopefully.
Nice review! I'm excited that this knife has finally shipped, and your reviews are getting more thorough. I really like that you compare the knife to other knives, it gives me a much better idea of the dimensions than numerical values would. A few requests for future review material- would you please include whether the knife has blade play (vertical or horizontal) and how centered the knife is? When dropping 300 on a knife questions like those come into play. Thanks!
Thanks for watching Brad! I'll see what I can do to increase the Hello Kitty factor on our channel. BTW... how do you personally pronounce your last name? "Southard like mothered, not mouth."--- is this correct?
Agreed I got on the email list when they first put it up on the site and I didn't get an email at all. What a bummer ill just have to wait for the next run.
Just thought I'd respond to a couple comments: Elmax is a far better steel than 8cr14mov, with a completely different chemical makeup. Elmax PM -- 1.7% carbon; 18% chromium; 1.0% molybdenum; 3.0% vanadium 8cr14mov -- 0.8% carbon; 14% chromium; 0.2% molybdenum; 0.1% vanadium Elmax is close to M390; both are Bohler steels, and M390 is to Elmax what CPM S60V is to CPM S30VN. Actually, Elmax is closer to S60V than S30V is, in terms of carbon, chromium, and molybdenum, and vanadium levels are close in all three. As far as the Southard being made in Taiwan, and the ZT 0561 being made in the US -- the blade is the most important part of the knife, if not the priciest. While the 0561 is made in the US, the blade steel is Bohler Elmax, which is Austrian. While the Southard is made in Taiwan, the blade steel is Capenter CTS-204P, which is American. Buying the Southard, only the assembly labor is foreign. But the materials were made by Americans, and Spyderco itself is American, with an American factory. Crucible steel is used for all the regular run designs, and I wonder if they made a deal with Crucible that makes them the exclusive supplier for the Colorado-made models. The Japanese factory is for knives that use Japanese steel, like H-1, ZDP-189, Super Blue, and VG-10. The Taiwan factory takes advantage of lax steel tariffs (they have no steel industry to speak of) to import American Carpenter steels they can't use in the US. That is speculation on my part, they don't release contracts publicly.
Spyderco's quality coming out of Taiwan has been nothing short of excellent. While associating quality control issues with China isn't unreasonable, the same can't be said of Taiwan - especially when we're talking about Spyderco.
I'm normally a huge Spyderco fan, and I really love the look of this knife, but for that price point it doesn't really offer too much in comparison to the ZT. The ZT0561 is larger, has more functional jimping and is much more appealing to look at due to the patter on the G10 and the titanium frame. Good try by Spyderco, but for that price there isn't much to rave about with this one. If they had made the price on this one similar to the Paramilitary 2, it'd be a home run blade for them for sure
Just a little input after carrying it for a while. Don't carry it in the left pocket. While sitting/crouching your pocket may push on the flipper and slightly deploy the blade - then you reach into the pocket and voila, you'ved cut yourself. Been there, done that, didn't like it (but the steel is sooo agressive ^^)
Southard liked mothered, not mouth. This is an awesome knife. I think the difference in price between this and the 0560 has to do with blade steel. Great comparisons, and I dig the new video format.
Knives made to do different tasks have different metals. Custom with A2 or D2 ingot steel would be considered premium quality for a 4" or 5" blade the price would be justifyed too. Plus if layered it would be harder than laser cut from a sheet of steel. Anyway each to his own.
I'm quite sure he pronounces it Suthard, not like south. Although it's easy to see why most people get it wrong. Nobody seems to get my name right either haha. Great vid!
Yes, I do not deny that is a nice knife. But for an edc/camping that is going to get beat up. I rather go for value. If money is not an issue, then this knife looks awesome :)
ZT 561's blade is made of Elmax, the Southland's of CTS 204P, they are not the same, but similar. They each have G-10/ titanium handles. Each are flippers. But here is something I do not understand. They are ABOUT the same price, yet the ZT is made in the U.S.A. and the Spyderco is made in Taiwan. Shouldn't the Spyderco be meaningfully less expensive?
I paid $25 more for the ZT0561 than the Sage 2. Roughly 10% cost savings buying from the Taiwanese. I also believe the S30V steel is way better than Elmax. Elmax is american rebranded version of 8cr14mov. imho
Taiwan manufacture has nothing to do with china. Also i guess that all the raw material get ship form the us to the Taiwan and then ship back here. Witch add to the cost
I'm not a fan of spiderco, I belive they are made for the sole purpose of selling and not for use or functionality (thats just a coincidence since they are knives). People buy them just to own. For the same price I would preffer to have a custom hand made; one of a kind folder or for a little more a fixed blade. There is something about hand forged metal that a sheet of machine cut metal on a production line can't compare to.
Every knife spyderco seems to be making is just a little more expensive than the last. Starmate anyone? Spyderco is going to price themselves right out of their target market.
280$??? Seriously??? If this was cheaper than ZT0560, which is its main opponent, it would sell a lot better... 0560 is made in USA as well, which a lot of people like. Spyderco's pricing policies get weirder by the year
Built quality is descent - no arguments there - but it's not USA!!! My point is that lately Spydies are getting pricier and pricier - and increasingly made in Taiwan - a trend I, for one, don't cherish! If I am asked to pay $150 and up for a knife - I want it to be made in the good old US of A...
Political too, but it seems they are obligated to tell us the truth - and knowing the truth - I'll take a ZT over Taiwanese Spydie. Knowing that an American craftsman somewhere in the USA has a job because I prefer to buy American makes me feel good...
Seems to me - I get a lot more for my money with a ZT!!! And it's made in the USA!!! I refuse to pay so much money for a Taiwanese knife - Spyderco - are you listening?
I added them to my rubric. I like the idea a lot and I appreciate the constructive feedback!
Thanks John! I think you are correct on the pronunciation.
Want the black one!
I wish we did. It should be in the next couple months.
Wow... that's impressive. I just talked to a guy yesterday that bought two more Norseman's because he's in love with them. I know carry options come down to personal preference, but I'm really impressed that the Southard trumps the Norseman for you.
Seriously one of the best production knives period. Its been getting way more pocket time than my grimsmo norseman lately, and thats saying a good bit
Thanks!
I'll be picking one up for sure.
love how you show how it carries great review .
Thanks for your insight on this one. Let us know how you like it when you get it.
Thanks for the review. I can't wait to get one. Price isn't bad when u consider materials used.... Plus a real Southard you can't touch fro less then a G.
Thanks for watching until the end! :)
Good observation Andre, but the Szabo isn't a functioning flipper... it's a thumb hole opener all the way.
Thanks for the comments!! Great vid. Noted on the jimping and "speedbumps" I actually quite like that discription of them. haha
I wanna see a hello kitty bandade next time
No kidding, right? I keep trying to convince our product people that we need to start selling these on the website. Keep your eyes open for it. :)
oh how i wish it had a revesable pocket clip for left handed carry, ZT made the effort on the 0550 and 0560 models, its such a great design
Looks like an awesome knife.. but i think I would definitely go with the ZT
lol I only got mine today 2019. I have various top rated folders but this one seems extremely nice.
Spyderco's knives are definitely very capable and functional. That's one of the reasons people like collecting them. And Spyderco uses premium steels. The steel on the southard might just be one of the best existing steels for knives out there today.

Build quality made in Taichun, Taiwan is outstanding my brother. Almost as good as in Golden.
Thanks for watching Brad! I'll see what I can do to increase the Hello Kitty factor on our channel. BTW... how do you personally pronounce your last name? "Southard like mothered, not mouth."--- is this correct?

Sebenza brother... that is the answer. Chris Reeve cares.

Cool knife. So much for the "in stock" email notification though
Ah, thanks for clearing that up!
It would be a beast if it was an auto.
Would be better than the bentlem by benchmade...IMO

Thats not the only flipper knife from Spyderco. The Szabo has a flipper in the compression lock space (I think)

I could be wrong on this, but wasn't it Rick Hinderer who came up with the idea for a lock bar stabilizer and not Chris Reeve?
I'm not sure if I got him or not... is he playing along?
Thanks for the pronunciation correction. I need all the help I can get when it comes to saying things correctly.
What did you do to your finger?
I liked the video just because you said “tactile close pin” had me dying.
Rick Hinderer should design an overbuilt clothespin.
diggin the longer reviews Ben!! when do you guys expect to get more in sock? beatiful kmife!
@traderjoes its funny you commented on my post because i have watched a few of your videos in the past and instantly recognized the name. small world
Not getting the glove thing on some of the videos on YT??
Nice review.
ZT-571? Haha liking the southard
Ok.

Is it easy to close with one hand? Or is the lock so hard that you need to use the blade as a lever while you close it?
How about the Lionspy?
Great review! Don't worry, you're nowhere near Nutnfancy review length :)
I really like the knife and I won't tell your secret either lol
What a trickster :)
very cool knife i may have to buy one (from bladehq of course) haha
Wow. This knife has my last name. Now I must buy it :/
I'm not a fan of spiderco, I belive they are made for the sole purpose of selling and not for use or functionality (thats just a coincidence since they are knives). People buy them just to own. I think that the pocket clip will feel better in pants with slanted pockets.
Nasty gash on your finger. Did that reach the bone?
When can I get one in black
Every knife spyderco seems to be making is just a little more expensive than the last. Starmate anyone? Spyderco is going to price themselves right out of their target market.
Nope, Taiwan. Excellent knives!
Do you guys know when you are getting the lion steel tispine in?
That's the nicest tactical close pin. Who pimped it tuffthumbz ? :-)
Nice review as well. Can tell you care. FYI. $40-$50 too much compared to others.
When you pull the knife out of your pocket you don't have to change your hand position. It's good to go.
How much for the tactical clothespin?
spyderco knives that are made in taiwan have great quality control, then again buy emurica products!
I love this knife but that's a lot of money for made in Taiwan... I think I'll get another Bark River and a cheap flipper instead.
Multicam option?
Can I get the tactical clothes pin at Blade HQ?
Wait whats the deal with the glove?
Dude it has ball bearings in the pivot you don't have to swing it like that to flip it open.
Pimp it!
$280 a bit steep price
280$??? Seriously??? If this was cheaper than ZT0560, which is its main opponent, it would sell a lot better... 0560 is made in USA as well, which a lot of people like. Spyderco's pricing policies get weirder by the year
um, price is a bit steep! $280?! I rather have 1 delica, 1 endura and I still have money left
that part at the end when you took your bandaid off I almost threw up, you need to get yourself to the hospital!
*bedlam.
All jimping on a flipper is going to do is tear up your finger imo
other color would do better
very nice, but i wouldnt use it...
Is it made in china
Built quality is descent - no arguments there - but it's not USA!!! My point is that lately Spydies are getting pricier and pricier - and increasingly made in Taiwan - a trend I, for one, don't cherish! If I am asked to pay $150 and up for a knife - I want it to be made in the good old US of A...
Hey what happened to your finger?
Oh right, nothing!
$275 :( great looking knife though.
Lol bladehq trolling the public with band-aids
300$ for a taiwan knife? Fuck that...
Political too, but it seems they are obligated to tell us the truth - and knowing the truth - I'll take a ZT over Taiwanese Spydie. Knowing that an American craftsman somewhere in the USA has a job because I prefer to buy American makes me feel good...
Haha, but he won't be paying just 10 more dollars for a Sebenza.
You just have to stir the pot, don't you? :)
Seems to me - I get a lot more for my money with a ZT!!! And it's made in the USA!!! I refuse to pay so much money for a Taiwanese knife - Spyderco - are you listening?
Why does everybody like tip-up carry? Gahhh I hate it. It's so stupid. Am I missing something?
Cut your self again ? XD i cut my too all the time....
Lol, you cut you finger!?
What happened to your finger? ;-) lol
ZT is way better than this spyderco.
Paramilitary 2 still the best spyderco!
You got me! :(
hahaha
what happened to ur finger??? .......jk!
Visual Non - Physical Jimping. ooks goodserves no purpose.
