I think this is really a good example of a knife you have to like. In the end with such a well built knife it comes down to the buyers taste. For people who like big knives it will probably be a gem. The only bad thing is that you can touch that edge when it's closed. I actually personally tipped Eric Glesser about it on the Spyderco Amsterdam Meet. He said it might be fixed on a second production run, but I'm guessing that wont happen unfortunately. Which is kinda a bad thing because he knows about the flaw. But to be honest, Spyderco does so much right that I don't mind.
Nice review Nick. I agree with most of your points. I'm not a fan of the brown and the edge does get pretty close for comfort when closed. But man, the action is addicting. It's the best flipper I own right now and at the price I got it for ($260) it's hard for me not to like it. I prefer the thickness myself, I can't stand the feeling of thin knives (usually under .5 inches is where I start to not to like it), and the contour of the handle fits my hand really well. I also like that while it's an amazing flipper, the thumbhole functions great as well, I can both open it with my thumb as well as spidey-flick without issue. My biggest gripe personally with this knife is that blade steel and grind. The grind should absolutely be higher and for the price Spyderco is asking I would have much preferred a better blade steel (m390, elmax, s35vn even) but the Rubicon has this same problem. All in all I think you were a little heavy-handed on the knife considering how many good points there were vs bad, the Nick bias is definitely evident in this video haha, but as a human being with preferences and opinions it's hard not to have some bias.
NICK, as always thank you for the good, bad, and ugly without BS. You are definitely my favorite reviewer, even though our tastes differ sometimes. But, if I may be so bold, your best work comes forth in your 12 minute reviews which are getting harder to find these days (and when you enlist the help of your secret Russian ally). You're still the best though!
The Apostle P didn't like the orange back spacer on his BM Crooked River so he dyed it the exact same color as the Magnitudes back spacer . On purpose . He'll be thrilled to know that you've named the color lol . If I had the 431 CDN that this knife costs i'd pay an extra 28 for the Slysz too .
Great video as always. Your nitpick that the blade is too thick seems a little off to me though. You suggest that the knife is more of a collectors item than a user, which I agree with. But then go on to say that the blade should be thinner so that it would slice better, making it a user. Since I believe it to be more of a collectors knife, the heavy blade stock improves the flipping action (like you mentioned) which is probably more important to have on this knife than slicing ability. The blade as is still cuts just fine of course. Does that make sense? Sometimes I have difficulty conveying my thoughts lol.
Tackleberry I own a rubicon and it's the bomb. Beware though, it's super thick as well. I don't enjoy carrying it because of that coupled with the fact it's kind of heavy.
I agree with most of your points yet feel you were a little severe with your dislikes. Although you and I agree it could have benefitted with a different accent color than the brown, many thought the orange was to loud so Spyderco went more muted. Personally I went with the Magnitude because I own the other 3 Carey collaborations and wanted to complete the collection. And yes out of the 4 this was saved till last before pulling the pin. LOL. As always good review Nick.
I'm a big fan of this knife. But it's so thick I decided to list it for sale on ebay. However the next day I decided i'm going to keep it and canceled the listing lol. I carry it rarely but I can't let it go 😒. I am considering pushing myself to sell it to fund a Norseman purchase My only issues are: it's too thick. And there are no alternative pocket clips out there, and this clip is very shallow. It's so unique and I love the blade so much that it remains an excellent dust collector
As I finger my Magnitude I like all the stuff you do not. Nick, you are known for appreciating small knives, which this ain't. So give it a break, Peter designed this with tactics in mind I am told, for someone who might be wearing gloves or be in a tough spot. I realize the knife will 99% of the time never leave the pocket of old used to be military guys, and others who wanted to be but never did. So let us have our fun, and don't be so tough on the design. This knife is super well made, and for me is fun to carry, (get it). Sorta like my Henderer which also is in t*rd brown.:>)
I really like Nick's videos, but he needs to coin the phrase "Nick-Picks", for all the little things that he "doesn't appreciate" that are totally subjective. He can put it in his glossary alongside "pocket pecker". And as far as the brown, I like it as a bit of contrast to the carbon fiber black and titanium gray. I also don't give a rat's arse about "snob appeal". I don't need to flex about the tools I carry.
Living in the UK where everything but a rolled up newspaper is considered a 'weapon' I always use the phrase "foldable camping tool" to keep customs happy. Foldable Camping Tool seems about right for this example.........

But seeing that I'm a bit beyond anal I'm surprised you didn't comment of Spyderco's habit of not matching the rear part of the clip to the contours of the rear of the knife handle; not the 1st time they done this and always puzzling... That said have a terrific New Year and keep the excellent content coming. Cheers brother!!
I was really exited for the review of this knife. I own the original rubicon and I love it to death mostly as a collector's piece, sad to see that its successor wasn't as good. I love the look of this knife, as I didn't really like the blade shape of the rubicon, but it looks like it won't be replaced for me.
Nick...you must cut into bags of sand pretty often...!?! Lol! Great review! I totally agree with everything you said except for the brown G10...I prefer it over the unbelievably gaudy and in-your-face orange on the Rubicon. But, as you mentioned...the color is simply a matter of taste. It's a shame...because the design, particularly the overall profile, had so much potential!
We pretty much always agree and I enjoy your exegesis of these knives very much. In fact so far only on one knife have we disagreed. The Kizer Sheepdog. I adore that knife. The edge on that blade slices thru time it goes so sharp. Oh and the Kizer Begleiter. You said it doesnt close very well due to a painted blade. Mine falls like warm butter. Just needs a little break in as so many knives do. (like the delica 4 perhaps or native 5) Good review!
Hey Nick, have you seen the Apostle P's video on the Spyderco Advocate? Similar design with the ball bearings putting a groove into the stainless steel washer/titanium scale. It sounded like that design was causing some problems for a lot of people. You should check it out!
Currently $225 on blade hq, with a free lil native lockback.. well, that's how I looked at it.. was like $240 after tax.. Wanted to add a spyderco to my collection. That knife needs a hinderer slicer grind that would be the first thing I do if I bought that but I'm really not in love with the typical s30 v steel on a $300 knife from them I mean they give you elmax in the lionspy and I wish they would have done the same with this since they don't offer them in sprint runs but then again you would be in the custom and midtech range for what they would have to charge for it so this knife in very on the fence about I want to love it because it's a Carry design and getting his customs is damn near impossible price wise for me
